    In the 1980's I lived in Donaghadee, my local pub, Grace Neill's was also frequented by an older man called Nelson. Everyone called him "Kicker" but he was one of the crew of the Sir Samuel Kelly when it rescued some of the survivors from Princess Victoria, quite an unassuming character. Thanks for covering a tragedy close to my heart. Incidentally, Grace Neill's is Northern Ireland's oldest pub, opening it's doors for the first time in 1611. Great Guinness and the foods not too bad either, if you're ever in that neck of the woods.

    Amazing presentation as always, I've always found these "railway ferries" to be good looking (and somewhat underrated) ships, so it's nice to see them getting some attention.
    There are 3 other "railway ferries" that I recommend looking into if you want (maybe some ideas for a future video). TSS Canterbury, famous for her participation during the Dunkirk Evacuation and the Normandy Landings. SS Sussex, which was torpedoed in WW1 (but did survive) and sparked an outrage much like Lusitania. And finally, SS Lorina, also known for her participation at Dunkirk, but unlike Canterbury, she did not survive.

    My compliments: I watch a lot of ship videos on RUclips. You are the first person to use the term "free-surface effect" on your last video correctly. You also do an excellent job identifying your use of "stock footage" if you don't have the specific photos. You should teach a course to others on how to produce historic videos.

    You got Me! Never heard of this lamentable event, so thanks for the coverage - it happened before I was born (Just). This ongoing problem with RO/ROs is perplexing, going back many, many years (Great Lakes Train Ferry?) and basically seems (as usual) to revolve around Profit v Safety. I am sure a safe ship COULD be built, however, as this channel has repeatedly pointed out much depends on the Quality/Training and Integrity of the Crew, which in this case seems to have been of a high standard - pity `bout the Maintenance of the Stern Door - the Captain`s decision to reverse course in view of that unservicebility is Questionable.

    • @shipwrecksunday
      @shipwrecksunday  3 месяца назад +1

      @@moosifer3321 it's very true - the vessels, themselves, aren't necessarily the issue! The issue lies with human error plus a risky design. The lack of internal bulkheads makes me feel weirded out, however that wouldn't be a problem if proper safety procedures were followed, crews were trained effectively, and human nature wasn't so unpredictable. Thanks for watching this one, First Officer Moose! I appreciate you!

    The sadest part of the whole thing was of course the loss of life!
    Would circumstances turned out differently if the captain hadn't done what he did, possibly. Hindsight as they say is always 20/20!
