Built that kit about 2010.I used my own electronic skills (because I was going to school for electronic engineering) and there was no lighting kit at the time. I did one thing that is not included in the lighting kit you have. I lit up the dashboard with individual LEDs. I did not use any SMDs because you had to solder your own leds to them. I used 2 (9 volt batteries) and hid them in the hallway between the back of the ship to the inside. (I recently changed it to a wall wart) Great kit. Have another one in my stash. Hope to tackle it when I retire in the next 2 years. I will definitely bring it up a notch when I do. Love your work , and keep it up.

My only crit of the channel is that you are working in the past. The distant past. I believe you have already moved on to the LIS Pod and even this very show is about a month ago. With that said, why I am displeased is that I - we -- may well have some things to say that might have meant something when there was a chance for you to think things over. But not to worry, these are still interesting and entertaining.
For example, I would have been howling at the limits of that outrageously priced (I know, hand finishing costs a lot no matter from where!) lighting kit. What doesn't it light? The interior. There should be a couple of somethings along the ceiling. That electroluminescent sheet seems mighty dim. One thing you did not comment on was the clear part of the floor beneath the good Captn's and Admiral's feet. There seems to be a chunk of that custom cut sheet that fits under them. Yes, some nice uplight, but not really enough for the interior.
If there was more time I would have recommended splitting off another 5V rail from the USB or transformer socket and resistor several more LEDs for here and there.
The saddest thing I've heard in months is the lack of response from Lou and Wayne over that neato model rest. In their defense, it looks so nice they may have thought you'd just bought a dog bed. (I do think Lou mentioned it more around the time you'd visited...)

Hi Phil. Another video done in your own individual inimitable style! 👍😁 I, too, was one of the people initially thinking that you can paint the floor but after thinking about it the vinyl would be much better for light blocking on a transparent piece. The lighting kit does look a bit old-school with big 5mm LED's everywhere. That reactor wall is just crying out for a custom circuit board with little surface-mount LED's. The problem with prebuilt units is that they are often limited and unexpandable. Unless it has a way to tap the power you cannot easily add your own extra lighting. Having said that, the main circuit board looks like it may have at least one spare socket so maybe the designers have left this option open. I don't like the look of that little tactile switch - I suspect that it may be tricky to fix it in place without glueing up the switch itself. Also, the way it appears to be mounted risks pushing the switch into the hull 😧. I tend to do my own lighting circuits which gives me maximum scope and flexibility but then again electronics and microcontrollers is another hobby of mine that meshes very well with the modelling. I have had mixed results with the Tamiya fine surface primer rattle cans - when they work they are excellent, especially on bigger kits such as this, but I have found that they can give a rough sandpaper-like finish on occasion. From the way that your fingers sounded when you rubbed the model I suspect that you have had this trouble too. I think that (like with airbrushes) it is caused by the paint droplets drying in flight between the spray head and the model surface. I think the problem is likely due to a dry atmosphere and with airbrushes it is possible to use retarder to combat it but with a rattle can there is not much you can do. If you hold the can closer to the model to reduce the time the paint has to dry before it reaches the model you risk "spider-webbing". For this reason I tend to use an Iwata Neo TRN2 airbrush for this kind of job - I have more options to mix the paint to work in the ambient conditions. The Vallejo primers come in nice big bottles and the TRN2 has the option of large capacity cups. Looking forward to the next video 👍😁

    Hi Phil...
I haven't talked with you before but I do converse alot with Wayne Greene...
    Across the pond...lol
But because of him I've been watching more of your channel now...
I live in your neck of the woods...L.A....lol
I'm just really starting my own channel "Robin Around Town"..."Robin on the Road"...and "Robin Around the World"...lol
I was starting it late in 2019...but then in early 2020 as we know COVID hit and things were shut down...
I lost some good friends from it and relatives...
I myself was put on leave from Universal Studios for over a year...
Ended up going into a PTSD state of mind and having flashbacks...then finding out I have bladder cancer late last year...which hopefully with the surgeries and chemo we got it in the early stages... well now that all the depressing parts are done...lol
What I wanted to ask you about this build is that I know I do see it available on Amazon plus the decal and photo etch set together available...
Now the boxes their showing on eBay does say that it comes with the figures now...but...
My friends shop has one sealed in the box like your box..
More of a corrugated type box but like yours it doesn't say anything about the figures inside...
The date on this box says 2019 which is way after the supposively started putting in the figures...now yours hat the figures...
Is your box dated 2019 also...then I would take the chance at buying it...
Now like I say I can get the same decal and photo etch set on Amazon...
But I haven't seen the lighting kit...I want to find that also... because you used it...
And can I still get the blue decal for the floor and from "Aztec Dummy" the stencils I think it is...
Best regards to you and thank you for any help you can give me...bless you...
Oh...if you go over to my channel just "Robin Around Town"...you can see what I've done on the IXO Porsche 917KH 1/8 Steve McQueen edition...best...

      Hi,
Thanks for your note. The re-release of the kit has the figures in it so just make sure it is the later release and you should be fine. Don’t bother with the vinyl floor I used it’s not worth it. Use Lou’s Aztek Dummy mask set which includes masks to paint the floor. The lighting kit, does seem to be available so I would check CultTVman or HDAmodelworx for all the after market stuff. I hope you enjoy the build and of course look after yourself!
      Warmest,
      Phil

The panels on the lower hull with the inside detail on them are for the Flying Sub Landing Gear kit . I found one of these when I was cleaning my model building room a couple weeks ago . I have no idea where it came from or when I got it . Looks interesting though .

Thanks so much for doing this video. Great to watch. As a young lad of 10 back in 1966 building the Aurora kit, things didn't go well. Only Testors glue and paint, no airbrush, it did not go well, ha ha. But always and still loved the concept of the flying sub. You are very meticulous about the fitting process and checking everything carefully. Now I am a retired guy with the funds to acquire some of the tools and paints to make these look great. The skills, well, we'll see. Have subscribed to your channel and hope I can learn more. Photo etched parts and painting skills I will have to learn.

I am so looking forward to watching this Phil. I am king of hoping you change your mind about lighting the control panels . This along with the large Jupiter 2 is the grail kits for Irwin Allen in my opinion.
But I still am looking forward to seeing it. I was hoping to start mine soon but got distracted with the Enterprise Refit ( Yes your fault) .
I have most, not all the aftermarket products to go with it. For your convenience:
    The kit
    The official lighting kit
    The Voodoo effects lighting kit
    The Stsrling-tech sound board
Aztek Dummy paint masks (of course)
The ParaGrafix photoetch and decal set
    The TSDS Waterslide decals
    The TSDS aquafoil alternative decals
    TSDS Blue vinyl floor kit.
Aftermarket chairs from Shapeways (GAS Designs)
Aftermarket figures from Shapeways ( GAS Designs) of Kowalski, Crane, Nelson and a figure with joystick
Listed just in case you missed something you like .
The only official thing I don't have is the accessory kit but it is very rare and expensive. Plus I don't need it .
Now if only I had the skill .....

Hi Phil! Nice to see you working on this kit. I have the 1st release of this kit in my stash, still shrink wrapped. Bought it about 7-8 years ago when it was out of production and going for stupid prices on eBay. Found it lounging on the bottom shelf of a sadly now closed hobby shop for $80. Was almost giddy when I saw it. No figures though. That was the re-release. Need the extra bells and whistles for it though.

Looking forward to the build, I have the original boxing and the re boxing with the figures, but not sure if I would use them, they certainly block out the interior lighting when they are seated. Flying Sub and the Spindrift are my favourite Irvin Allen ships, just wished someone would make a new tooled 1/32 Spindrift.
I have seen lots of builds of the reactor wall lighting on the FB but not seen anything that really looks accurate to what is seen on the TV show, the lighting seems to have a rolling effect like they were mounted in a opaque drum, hard to explain, it make be a effect of the filming they used, or the frame rate on video, but it's hard to get looking right in my opinion.

Looking forward to seeing this model built. I happen to have this model, got it about 15 years ago! No after nmarket yet, hope some of it is still available (at a reasonable price). Life has been busy LOL. Will get to it after the PT109, Apollo Luner Module, and the partwork kits coming in. Great to be retired.... oh heck, went back to work part time last week, less model building time. Oh well.

I believe there are two release of this kit. The origi al.release did not crew figures. A pmea to all model channels who do go through the kut without first lookingbat yhe instru tions - and theorise on the parts being looked at. And with something like please familiarise yourself with the subject matter - e.g the panels are for the landing gear and a grabber arm. The clear stand looks to be the same design as the stand that was included with the classic Aurora kit from the 1960s.

I find I have a universal hatred of instructions these days. Whether it's a boxed kit or a monthy subscription part work I don't think enough time is put into making instructions clear and readable. It would be nice to know that a part needs to be manipulated into position by going in at an angle and then stood up (for instance) instead of just giving me an arrow pointing to where it goes...
