Absolutely brilliant build - well done. One point for anyone building a Whirlwind. By early 1941 RAF fighter command had gone over from using HF radios to VHF radios. The VHF radio on the Whirlwind didn't require the wire aerial from the aerial mast to the tail - the shorter wavelength meant the aerial mast itself was all that was needed. They would still have had the IFF wire aerials from the fuselage to the tailplane. There was one well-photographed Whirlwind that was kept at Boscombe Down (P6997) that seems to have kept its HF radio and the associated wire aerial. The first 18 production Whirlwinds (P6966 to P6983) were built with only provision for HF radios, having no forward aerial mast, the wire went to the back of the cockpit canopy instead. This Whirlwind P6985, being so early in the production run may well have briefly been fitted with the HF radio before having a VHF set fitted. But the majority of Whirlwinds didn't have a wire aerial.
Not the world's most famous aircraft, somewhat underrated in its day and not developed to its full potential, it is one of my favourites........ That model is a thing of great beauty 👌🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Fantastic build! Good to see you back. Love the Whirlwind and this is a really nice kit. Would be nice if a company like eduard would release a aftermarket engine and gun bay for it. though.
Wow. Next level work. I have never seen or heard of this aircraft, but I'm glad I did . Never worked on this scale before, but with my eyesight getting weaker maybe its time to build 1/32nd. Thanks for a great video
That’s a win for me then Blackthorne 😁 Part of the reason why I like build obscure stuff is to bring to people who don’t know about that subject. If I can get one person to be interested in Brit aviation, then I’m doing well 👍
Hey, I was just about to say the same. I like your style and commentary, your choice of subjects reflects mine too. (Great Tim’s think alike 😂) It certainly looks like you’re getting your mojo back ☺️
I have the 1/32 Hawker Tempest from Revell, and it is the old Special Hobby kit. I am about to toss the dang thing it has serious fit issues I doubt I can correct.
Grand to have you back on the channel and sharing, Tim. Never disappointed with your work .....the Whirlwind is an amazing build and such a pleasure to watch. Your presentations are terrific so more please (if it's not too much trouble🙂).
Nice work. Looking at the propellers, they appear to be designed to rotate in opposite directions (the port clockwise and starboard anti-clockwise, 'up between the engines'). This begs the question of are they attached to the correct engines. From what I have read, both the De Havilland Hornet and North American P82 'Twin Mustang' initially had propellers that rotated up between the engines. On the Hornet this caused rudder effectiveness problems at low sppeds, and the P82 couldn't even get airbourne on its maiden flight due the high levels of drag. Consequently, both had propellers that rotated down between the engines (as does the Airbus A400M, which (serendipitously) also causes the wings to generate more lift)
I'm new to your videos but I really like how you presented the construction and finishing. I think you did just fine with the video even after a year break,. You got me jazzed to work on my own kit! Subscribed!
welcome back Tim, a beautiful build as always. Ive also been away from my channel for a while, as you well know. maybe this will kick me into making another video. P.S. I just doing have the patience for doing step by step videos of the build - well done!
My favourite WW2 aircraft. Although not part of the canonical Battle of Britain aircraft, it flew in late 1940 when the battle was still very real so I kind of include it. Imagine these instead of hurricanes attacking the bombers while Spitfires provided top cover against the 109’s.
A real shame it was discarded just because the engines weren’t up to scratch. The kit has been re-released as a “Hi-Tech” boxing ie loads of extras. I might consider building again as a Whirlybomber
Tim, where have you been 🙂? Excellent build of this beautiful sleek airplane that could have had a bit more attention back in the day..and now. Nice job 👍✨
She came out nice! I picked up the Revell 1/32 Temptest that was a one time Special Hobby kit. It is a nice kit in some ways, but a poor kit in other ways. A mixed bag of great detail, and really poor fitting parts. I'm about to toss the darn thing in the trash.
Beautiful Tim !! i remember making the 1/72 Airfix kit back in the day , and i loved the Whirlwind , if they had just given it the 2 Merlins like they were going too it would have been in my opinion a Mossie killer , beautiful job and im gonna pick one of these up at some point ...thank you for your build Tim ...Shaun.
Thanks for sharing. I have been building this kit as well. I really liked the cockpit, and it’s capacity to super detail it with various control cables. I’ve built the main airframe and it’s ready for paint. The undercarriage looks interesting, any tips?
Get someone else to do it! 😆😆 Patience, take it slow and steady. I did try to film it but it’s hard enough just building it. It’s is actually quite sturdy once it’s together It’s a nice cockpit init Cos, like you say, could be super detailed if you fancied it b
I ordered this kit last week....looking forward to building it.... Did you encounter any fit issues or surface detail issues... My special hobby Tempest mkv had a few issues
Hi Nige.. all is generally good. But being a SH kit is isn’t perfect. Surface detail can be soft in areas and quite subtle, so be careful with your paint. Cockpit is busy but watch the fit. Undercarriage is by far the most difficult, complicated and vague fit but it does actually fit and is quite strong. Good luck mate, it builds up nice and is bigger than you think
Putting aerial wire on spoils the kit as it scales up like an anchor chain and we know how anal some modellers are about things not to scale. I've got this kit to build but will probably leave it untouched in the box where my attempt will look as good as the best modellers in the world before they start
Fair point regarding the aerial wire Paul. Don’t leave it all boxed up mate, it is a little tricky but not that bad as long as you take your time. Get it built, you know it make sense…

Point taken Joe, thank you. The pics I’ve seen had the wire but I’ll take on board your info. Thanks for the encouraging words too mate. 😎
A beautiful design and not exploited to full potential with better engines.....

Thanks a lot Aleš 😀

Definitely Barry.. they might yet
Terrific looking aeroplane and a terrific looking model, you cracked it, well done!
Thank you James 😁
A right cracking good job you made of it. Excellence all around.
Great job! Beautiful model.
I never built mine in 72, postponed it.
Cheers bud… get that kit built! 😃
Hello Tim, glad to see you back. Hope you are in good spirits. I've been there pal!
Hi Alan, yeah strange one that. I don’t think it’ll ever be as it was but I’ve started another vid build, so we’ll see…

Yes Timbo.. we do think alike 😆
great work! Special hobby kits are a challenge to put together (their 1/32 yak-3 kit was the only one I have ever abandoned).
I have the 1/32 Hawker Tempest from Revell, and it is the old Special Hobby kit. I am about to toss the dang thing it has serious fit issues I doubt I can correct.
They can be difficult yes Lonewolf. The undercarriage on this is really difficult to get together
Great to see you back Tim - love your channel and your builds - always a pleasure to watch - your Whirlwind being no exception as usual 👍 - Kris
Thank you very much Kris 😎
Look who's back :-) not a minute too soon.
It’s been ages Guy
And again a great build.
Excellent work! What an interesting subject, makes a nice not to big 1/32 scale model... Very cool.
Thank you Richard… it is quite big mate.. nearly too big for my spray booth
Awesome job.
Very nice indeed 👌
Cheers Vinnie
Great build and vid Tim, good to see you back.
Cheers Deano mate

Yeah Andrew, Westland changed the prop rotation a couple of time during the development of the Whirlwind. Quite interesting really
Bangin Timbo!.
Baghead 😎😎😎
Wow great video and nice build......
Thank you Skip
Eric Brown said this was the only aircraft he ever flew that was a "disappointment".
A beautiful aircraft in need of some development, in my opinion.
She is a good looking aircraft definitely Aussie

@@TimsScaleModelling I’ve got the 1/48th Classic Airframes kit in my stash. Pretty much my favourite kit manufacturer along with Airfix.
@alanmorris8783 I love a CA kit too. Got quite a few now, I should really start building them

Don’t chuck it away just yet Paul. The Whirlwind was pretty much the same as your Tempest. Though the fit was actually good mostly
Did you flat spot the tyres? Nice touch.

Did you have any problems with the fit as I thought Special Hobby were limited run type kits and had fit issues? Great build sir.
The fit was generally good as is the detail. But you do have to watch what you’re doing. Tamiya this ain’t.
@@TimsScaleModelling Thank you so much.

No primer inside the cockpit Tim? Beautiful end result - looks like a good kit?
Nope Phil, just for a change. Didn’t like it. Going back to primer 😆
@@TimsScaleModelling If you don't try, you won't know! Did the kit go together well? I don't think I've seen a review or build of this one anywhere.
