    It amazes me that people talk about the helmet catch ALL THE TIME yet people HARDLY EVER talk about the fact that he caught it while being covered by RODNEY HARRISON. Rodney Harrison was one of the best safeties of his era and was FREAKING INTERLOCKING ARMS WITH THE DUDE WHILE HE WAS GLUING THE BALL TO HIS HELMET!!!!!

    • @aspenrebel
      @aspenrebel Год назад +2

      But he was stupid to not go for trying to strip the ball out. The heck with pulling him down.

    One of the things that makes the Helmet Catch so special is that it immortalised the name of an otherwise unknown receiver named David Tyree. The fact that it was done by someone who ISN'T a famous superstar makes it absolutely perfect!

    • @Gungho73
      @Gungho73 Год назад +2

      I think my favorite part of the Tyree story iirc was he struggled in the practices the week prior. Just probably had one of the worst practices at WR they'd had under Coughlin to that point. So you could only imagine going into the game what they probably felt about his chances of making a play. For him to make the biggest play in arguably the biggest upset in NFL history? Yeah. Number 1.

    With regards to Beckhams one handed catch, yes he had the gloves on, but if you look at the replays he used his 2 fingers and a thumb to catch it not looking at the ball with his arm behind his head. Sticky gloves may have helped, but it takes skill, strength and awareness to do it like he did... BTW Jerry Rice admitted to using stickem on his gloves...
    BTW as a Cardinals fan, #3 was a dagger to the heart. Because fans knew that was the only chance in our life time to see them with a chance to win a SB... The pain... The pain...

    • @ndrocca
      @ndrocca 3 года назад +1

      I despise it when they say shit like that and I’m not even a Giants fan (I’m a Ravens fan). The worst part is when I hear the same people act like the Kearse catch was so much better and took only skill and there was no luck involved. Every NFL play has a bit of luck. If Too Tall Jones does not fall for Montana’s fake, then maybe he blocks the Catch before it is even possible, if the Patriots DB that jumped over Kearse knocked the ball away, then he never has a chance to catch it, if Big Ben is sacked then he could never get that throw to Holmes and I could go on. Yet, the Helmet Catch is constantly the target of the “more luck than skill” argument. A little luck should not take away from an all time great play and I still think all the catches I mentioned are all time great catches. Despite that, I would argue that the Helmet catch is actually the most impressive catch ever, one of the hardest hitters in NFL history draped all over him yanking him to the ground, for Tyree to have the strength in his fingers and presence of mind to just press it against his helmet in the Super Bowl, on third down against the undefeated Pats to save the game winning drive, best catch ever in my mind! I’d like to see anyone who calls that catch lucky try to pull it off!

It gets a boost for being an important catch, but I don't understand how you put it over the Santonio Holmes catch. It was a better catch in a bigger game. John Mackey's 75-yard touchdown in SB 5
    Big Ben Right for Atlanta, defeating NO in 1978
    The original Hail Mary, Dallas vs. Minnesota, 1975
    Finally, the catch that wasn't: Mike Renfro, Oilers, vs. Pittsburgh, 1979 AFC Championship. Every replay I've seen says it was a great catch, but instead it was a blown call that cost the Oilers their best chance to reach a Super Bowl. It's the flip side of the coin to the Immaculate Reception.

    Discount every catch in which the player is wearing those gloves that would snatch a gnat from air with one finger. They're the same as Belitnikof's catches wearing a ton of stick'um. That makes Franco's catch #10-9-8-7-6. #5 Swann's catch becomes #5-4-3-2. "The Catch" is #1. I'm glad some others agree with me.

    How is Manning to Manningham NOT on this is in SB46? BTW David Tyree couldn't catch a cold the week leading up to the SB. He dropped everything in practice.

    Where is Julio Jones in Falcons vs Patriots SB? End of game, insane catch rt sideline both toes down. Ball over DB's head, down to Pat's 22 yd line, Falcons up by 8. Then Falcons choke!! Go backwards, out of FG range, have to punt. The rest is history. Oh by the way, Im a Pats fan.

      @Harry Engel Tatum was playing his typical assassin style of football and it came back to take a chunk out of his ass.

      @Harry Engel Mitchell? Never saw him dirty with the Steelers. Unless you're talking a different Mike Mitchell. Or before he played for the Steelers. I do agree on Burfict and Suh. With Burfict number two and Suh three, Atkinson four. Tatum has to be number one, if only for paralyzing someone for life with Daryl Stingley. Though to give the assassin credit, that was a legal hit back then.

      @Harry Engel I'm a native of the Burgh, so I'm a fan as well. Been watching then since 74 at age ten. Yours is also the first list I have seen on dirty players to ever include Mitchell. Don't get me wrong. I could care less if he was dirty much less the dirtiest. To me, he was also an average safety at best. I've seen a couple late hits from him, but never enough to call him dirty. Much less to rank him in the top 4. But to call him as dirty as Burfict??? Wow.

    I absolutely agree with #1! It's not just the whole play that was FANTASTIC, it was the fact that the momentum swung and changed everything & broke N.E.'s heart, which is ALWAYS A GREAT THING! When he caught it, you knew that New York was going to win

    The OBJ 1hander in the end zone vs Dallas was the best I've seen... but the helmet catch WAS awesome bc as someone pointed out, the circumstances surrounding it and what was at stake.. but that being said, this should be named Best Catch With The Most On The Line, cuz how that Beckham catch ISN'T number 1 is nuts. And to hear these ppl make excuses as to why he caught it(wearing gloves, it was a meaningless catch, and blah, blah, blah) but this video is called GREATEST CATCHES...And THAT one was amazing... great... call it what you want

    Bill Walsh is on video twice with that play saying Dwight Clark would be in the back of the end zone. Once before it happened and they ran that play, and again when calling the play. Also the view from behind Montana shows he was putting it where Clark had an opportunity to catch it and the Cowboys defense didn’t. I don’t care either way, it was awesome and won’t change how I feel about it, about the 49ers or about Montana and Clark. Also there’s evidence it was a pass. I would also say if he was throwing it away, that’s a pretty stupid place to put it and could’ve been risky. Why not throw it away like normal if he was throwing it away? Does Montana have a history of getting intercepted when throwing balls away or a history of throwing balls away in the field of play? Or was Clark taller than everybody and Montana threw it high where Clark could catch it and in the direction Clark was running towards? We all know how it looked and that ppl claim he was throwing it away but that’s partially bc if that’s the case, the 49ers win bc of luck, the Cowboys did enough to win but lost bc of a fluke. The Cowboys are better. It takes away from the play being a legendary catch, and takes away it’s importance. But that’s not what happened, it was a pass, a catch, a touchdown, an NFC championship, a Super Bowl appearance, the beginning of a dynasty, and of hall of fame careers.
