Try leaving the original hose that you had on the planer and hook up the other end to the bag and put the bag on the floor. When you start planning wider boards you will in all likelihood get the corner of the board caught on the bag and will detach from the planer. My dust collection unit, a 1 HP bag on top and bottom is hooked up with a 4 inch hose to the planer works great. The planer has so much air ejecting the chips I usually don't even turn on the dust collector and it fills the bottom bag with no problem.
