Upgraded Dust Collection For a DeWalt DW735 Planer

  • In this video I am updating the dust collection system for my DeWalt DW735 planer. I wanted something easier to empty, yet still collected the chips fairly efficiently. And since I have such a small shop, I needed a solution that took up less space than my previous collection system.
As I suspected, the cheap bucket shown in this video failed and the top popped off with the power of the planer's blower. I replaced that bucket with a much sturdier bucket with a screw on lid. That new bucket (which seems to be holding strong) can be found at: amzn.to/3nrYsnr
...and I've given up on the whole sock thing. It worked OK, but hooking it up to my shop vac seems to be more efficient.

Or drill the circle on the base of existing bottom of the table to fit the bucket close to the floor, and drill on the sides of the table for the hose. This way the bucket can sit underneath the planer and if needed add height with 3/4 inch plywood at the top and drill for hose.

I will also be using your basic design for your planer table on wheels, even though I will modify it some to accommodate a longer melamine infeed/outfeed table to reduce snipe. But I will also build an attached table/stand for the dust collector bucket. Thanks for a good instructional video.

My very simple and cheap dust collection system also uses a 5 gal bucket with a 4 inch flex hose attached to the exhaust port of the planer and using a PANTRY HOSE with 1 leg cut off for the flex hose (cut it so you have plenty of leg left to run up the flex hose 12 inches or so) and then use the body of the pantry hose to spread over the bucket top. May need to racer tape the pantry hose to the bucket Works great

You may want to consider a more substantial filter than a sock. The most dangerous dust generated in a wood shop is the extra fine dust that blows right through something like your makeshift filter.

If you plane any quantity of boards at one time, this bucket is WAY too small to be efficient. Use a garbage can with a plywood lid and a garbage bag inside with a separator like this atop. You wheel the planer out to the middle of your shop probably anyway. The footprint that matters is storage footprint for your planer. I have a video of what I did and it works great. I'll post a link in a bit.

Great idea. I currently have a Delta planer TP400LS. Have no idea how old it is...found it in my Dad's basement, and it doesn't have a chute to hook anything up and collect the chips. I plan on purchasing a Dewalt 735X planer as soon as Lowes gets them back in stock. I make epoxy boards, and when I run the boards through my planer, the epoxy chips make a mess. They make steel, fiber and plastic barrels called "open top with clamping ring". You can get them used free or inexpensively in some areas. The food grade 55 steel barrels are not used for toxic contents and can provide a static ground path if used with HVAC ductwork. I found a 4 inch spiral adjustable dryer vent elbow that fits the Dewalt planer dust connection. You can get ideas at oneida-air website.
