My very first quilt I made and quilted I followed the wonderful Melanie Hamm. She was so gifted. It was so sad seeing her lose her battle to cancer. I know she is in Heaven quilting 💕
I didn't realize you should let your batting get some air. Good to know. Thank you for saying so. The clamps are a great idea. And guess what I have some (several sizes). 😉
Your methodology for prepping the sandwich layers to be basted with safety pins is exactly how I manage my queen size quilts on my 3X6’ folding work table. Lots of running around, but with ironed layers and by beginning in the middle, it works reasonably well. I have rarely been troubled with gathers or pleats on the backing, thank goodness. ( as I am 75 and make quilts for family and friends only, I think they would forgive the odd fold😉❣️if it happens)
Thank goodness someone is showing how to get a "larger" quilt ready on a smaller work space. I have asked that question several times with no response. Not everyone has a huge table to work on and the floor is difficult at best. Bless you.
Thanks for this tutorial. I use my king size bed to make my quilt sandwich. One time I thought ‘this quilts heavy!’, only to find I had pined the bed quilt to the sandwich😂😂
This is perfect timing….I am doing my first quilt and I am , more than a little, at a loss on how to accomplish it on a 3’x6’ banquet table. I hope watching your video will ease my mind.
I watched this video recently and decided to give this method a try using my kitchen bench and putting a cutting board over the sink lol. It was fantastic. I made a queen sized quilt sandwich in about an hour and a half, with a break in the middle. I used the bench as a) the height is easier on my back; b) it's granite so I don't have to worry about the pins scratching the underneath surface; and c) it's probably the biggest flat space in my house apart from beds. Clamps cost me under US$10 on Amazon. I'm so impressed, I'd recommend this method to everyone. Thank you Rob for making my quilting life so much easier.
I always have issues basting my quilts. I have a domestic machine and quilt on it. I have watched many videos on how to baste a big quilt on a smaller table. I have clamps as well. But I never thought to just float the batting and the quilt top one too of the backing. I guess that helps the eliminate the puckers and pleats. Thanks Rob.
I like seeing your table set up as bits and pieces that you have pulled together to meet your needs. Lots of us are improvising our "studio" equipment, and it is great to see someone showing that there is no shame in using what is at hand, and inexpensive parts to make a creative space.
Thanks so much Rob, for this tutorial. Life gets so much easier to quilt. Looking forward to see how you progress on a domestic machine and finish the quilt.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve made a bunch of quilt tops but have yet to finish any of them because this part seemed so overwhelming to me. I have made one quilt sandwich- on the floor, which was very very uncomfortable, and I don’t have much confidence in the end result. I’m going to redo it right now to be sure it is nice and even from the middle out, and then I’m going to quilt that sucker, lol!
Three or four of my quilty friends get together at our meeting place for a “sandwich day”. To help make things more comfortable, we install risers to two adjoining tables. We each bring a few tops and it makes for a fun productive day.
I love that you're in your socks....cozy!! I've been w/o internet for a full week. It finally got repaired. Car crashed into our box outside. Took 3 visits to get it fixed cuz the fiber wires were so damaged. I sure missed all my quilting videos.
Thank you so much for this video. It popped up exactly as I am I getting to ready to sandwich a large. Quilt for our bed. I’ve done quilts before this was a very nice review.
You make basting look easy. I haven’t seen any other tutorials on basting, just the mention that basting is good😊 Thank you for showing the basic steps of basting😊
This is an awesome helpful video. I was looking for something just like this to do basing with pins. I believe this is the old-fashioned way. I’m a hand quilter and I’m a beginner so this is helping a lot. I still have to figure out how I’m going to hand quilt. My teacher has told me hey we can’t put this together until you figure out how you’re going to quilt itso it’s quite a challenge. I hope you’ll have somebody on sometime talking about hand quilting. Maybe I’ve missed it. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video Rob. I’m a new quilter, using my dining room table to layer my quilt and since I’m 72, I don’t want to get on the floor. I’ll be getting some claps instead of the blue tape. Thank you for that tip. 🥰 from Houston
I use pinmoores to sandwich my quilt. You stick a straight pin in the pinmoore. I also do it on the floor. I think I'll use my 3x6-foot table in the garage to do my next one and get some clamps. Great tutorial. Looking forward to seeing you do it on your domestic.
I use the backs of used cutting mats beneath the quilt, when I pin baste. I leave them all open & use a tool to lift up the tip of the pin so I can close the safety pin. I have 2 standard ironing boards to place to my left & in front of me at my domestic Husqvarna machine. It helps keep the weight from pulling my quilt out of straight...after petting it multiple times.
I just came across your video, that is a great way to baste a quilt. I also have the same issues as some of the other viewers. Lots of ideas to use for basting. My usual thing is to is put it on a hanger and get on with the next project as I find prepping a quilt so difficult. Thank you so much for sharing and I have subscribed to your channel……😊
My cutting table is 49 x 66 inches and I need to sandwich a queen 98 x 108 and a king size 120 x 120 quilt by Christmas so I am very excited about this video!!
Excellent tutorial Rob. I shared it with a friend who is new to quilting and asked about this process. Easier to understand in a demonstration than to explain.
My husband and adult sons are my basting buddies. I can't pin due to RA in my hands and fingers (even with tool). I use 505 and work on a banquet table in the back yard. I do the layout on my 4x8 island, then fold back, adjust, and spray outside. Works great!
Love this. The most recent quilt I did on our mid-arm we ended up laying a tarp out on our driveway to baste it. It was an adventure. I think in the longrun we spent longer basting it and getting it ready for the midarm than I spent quilting it on the midarm.
I bought an inexpensive hardware store folding table to baste so I don't have to worry about scatching my dinning room table. Basting on a table is so easy, don't be afraid ladies and gents.
I too don’t have a large table, and can’t do basting on the floor. Bought 2” thick insulation panel and sawhorses. This makes an easy, lightweight table that is portable, and doesn’t take a lot of space to store. The foam is dense enough to be sturdy, and I don’t care about “pecking” issues!
Used to spray baste mine at my office. In the conference room that wasn't used. It was great. Been out medically from work since October. So obviously no longer an option. 😉
Can you please address spray basting, stitch basting, and Elmers school glue basting for domestic machine quilting? Perhaps a separate video?. If you have already done this (I am a new quilter) can you shoot me a quick link. Love how you explain things for beginners without making the videos too long! 🙂
MarQ's comment just solved my problem. My dining room table is huge but don't want to baste with pins and hit my table. I use my cutting mat under it and have to keep moving it around. Pecking, didn't know there was a name for what i was already doing.
I quilt on a bernina 880. I pin baste like Rob but start clamping at the upper right corner giving about 1 inch extra backing and bstting . I dont want extra backing and batting because of bulk. I got my binders clips at Office Depot.
Great video and super start to home quilting! Thanks for pointing out Tiffany pressing her open seams. I press mine open 90% of the time. I love the flatness it gives. This quilt is beautiful! Is just the pattern available for purchase?
Hi Rob! Great tutorial!! Wish I had seen this while basting my first quilt a couple years ago! You’re talented, for sure! What do you think of spray basting?
I have a large piece of cardboard that covers the nice table that I use for a similar method.Protects from the clamping and the pinning! Got similar clips at Harbor Freight.
Love your enthusiasm and go get them attitude, but I have to say that your idea of a small table to baste is very different to mine, your table isn't small at all! . I wish I had such a big table as yours, looks fantastic, my sewing table is 20 inches by 35, tiny, just big enough for my sewing machine, so I have to baste on the floor, ♥️
I like the look of tying the quilt by hand. How do you use the basting with pins to ease the use of lifting and tying without distortion of sandwiched fabric? Love the video! Thanks.
Enjoyed your video! Is your homemade table 4'x8' (a piece of plywood)? I love the concept of using a table like you have put together and having all the storage drawers under the top.
Great video Rob! Question....what longarm system do you use? I've been straight line quilting on my domestic machine for a while, but I literally hate the basting step so much that I have a PILE of 30+ quilts that are just sitting there because I hate basting so much!🤣🤣🤣 I have limited space, so a 10-12 ft frame just isn't feasible.
My very first quilt I made and quilted I followed the wonderful Melanie Hamm. She was so gifted. It was so sad seeing her lose her battle to cancer. I know she is in Heaven quilting 💕
Same, I'm new to sewing so I only found her a few months before her passing. I still go back and watch her videos though
I didn't realize you should let your batting get some air. Good to know. Thank you for saying so. The clamps are a great idea. And guess what I have some (several sizes). 😉
Love the bright socks

I WAS THRILLED TO FIND THIS VIDEO... VERY HELPFUL AND IT'S ALWAYS A JOY TO LEARN FROM ROB, HE'S THE BEST!! :)
Hey Rob, you are always spot on with anything you do!
Rob, Thanks! I’m 78 and can no longer creep around on the floor😕, but want to sew and quilt as long as I possibly can. You help prolong that time👏, 🍀!
Thank goodness someone is showing how to get a "larger" quilt ready on a smaller work space. I have asked that question several times with no response. Not everyone has a huge table to work on and the floor is difficult at best. Bless you.

Great tutorial! I believe this is the best technique for basting a lg quilt on a small table. Thank you, Rob!
Yay, Rob! For being brave enough to quilt on a domestic, ON video, inspiring us to try! 🤗
You instructions are very clear and helpful.
You ROCK. thank you.
I love your videos - I have learned so much!!!
How do we find out when the live showing is?
This is perfect timing….I am doing my first quilt and I am , more than a little, at a loss on how to accomplish it on a 3’x6’ banquet table. I hope watching your video will ease my mind.
Hi Rob!!! Love your instruction and quilting/sewing machine tips! Very helpful. Thank You!
Hi Rob, You make me believe I can do it. You break it down to make it less intimidating. Thank you

Thankfully I have a patient and understanding husband that helps me sandwich my quilts.
I do mine on a domestic so it's great you're doing this!!!
Your socks are awesome!!!
Thanks so much Rob, for this tutorial. Life gets so much easier to
quilt. Looking forward
to see how you progress on a domestic machine and finish the quilt.
I thought I was the only person who works on quilts in socks😇 love it

I did it on a small Bernina 215 A king size quilt. I'm game
I'm a new quilter so I don't know what to be nervous about.
Thank you so much for this video. It popped up exactly as I am I getting to ready to sandwich a large. Quilt for our bed. I’ve done quilts before this was a very nice review.

Rob, love the idea of cutting mats underneath to protect table
Good afternoon wonderful video. My mama and granny use to do quilt like that
Love the socks😊
Thank you for this. I took up quilting at the beginning of covid and need all the tips and hints I can get.
Me too! I have learnt everything by watching people like Rob on RUclips. Thank you for making it all so very educational and fun.
Thanks Rob for the great how to. I normally spray baste but might give it a go pin basting,
Hi I did not know we’re doing this. Thanks love ya. Your a great quilter.

Hi Rob thanks for demo watching a little late here on Saturday from Sth Australia
I love your videos. I Am a following you as you quilt on a domestic machine. Really enjoyed your past videos.

Thanks you very much Rob for your tips and tricks to make the sandwich of a quilt.
I do mine on the floor.
Take care.
love the bright colors u use in your quilts.
I baste my quilt on my design wall. I can easily do it with my good friend, gravity. Love your quilt.
I just came across your video, that is a great way to baste a quilt. I also have the same issues as some of the other viewers. Lots of ideas to use for basting. I remember you making this video some time ago. I love this method. It works like a charm every time. I found the clips at harbor freight. Thank you!
Congratulations on your second year choose for better homes and gardens magazine
Excellent tutorial Rob. I shared it with a friend who is new to quilting and asked about this process. Easier to understand in a demonstration than to explain.
The quilt is beautiful. Luv the black backing.

I bought an inexpensive hardware store folding table to baste so I don't have to worry about scatching my dinning room table. Basting on a table is so easy, don't be afraid ladies and gents.
This is a very helpful video. Thank you.
I think they stitch all around the quilt top only before longarming. It keeps any of the little seams from opening up.
Great video, very informative....thanks.

Can not wait to see the next step.
like the socks! I am usually barefoot in my sewing room & most everywhere else in the house.
Hello from UK, Yvonne from Silverstone, Northamptonshire ❤
Thank you so much for teaching this basting method. It works great and speeds up the part of quilting that is not my favorite.
Looking forward to seeing a whole quilt done on a domestic machine. So often the demonstrations are of a single block, and not as beneficial to me.
I'm from Kuttawa Ky love your videos
Good advice. I usually do it on the floor, but I’ll try this. Easier on the back.
I love the clamp idea!
Hi from Wells MN, Saturday morning.
Happy Friday from Nova Scotia
I miss the lighting of the old studio. Gerry is missing, too. Have been watching since Man Sewing . I so enjoyed the way you explain.
Thank you for sharing this technique ❤
Thank you...your how to is great.
Catching up on Saturday

I use spray. My hands will not let me pin. The process of smoothing out and keeping things even is important.
nice socks 🧦
I agree. Great bright color! Careful with any stray pins!!
Hi Rob! Great tutorial!! Wish I had seen this while basting my first quilt a couple years ago! You’re talented, for sure! What do you think of spray basting?

Enjoyed your video! Is your homemade table 4'x8' (a piece of plywood)? I love the concept of using a table like you have put together and having all the storage drawers under the top.
I baste my quilts with a needle and thread, using contrasting color and very long stitches.
