After seeing clothings and misc items got more community awards than all of the hats combined throughout the video, I have a strong guess that tf2 hats nowadays are simply too generic and unfit with the game art style, thus making players crave for something original and suits the game. The Motorized Mask looks like a Borderlands reference. Wish the visor was completely glowing though rather than two awkward dots. Btw some of these don't even look that bad.
