    Heavy intensive grazing should be applied annually up till say 3 weeks ago to clear spring growth

    • @silverdale3207
      @silverdale3207 6 месяцев назад +4

      Exactly, that's what made the first one so bad, lack of grazing. I helped fight the first one and we all said we'll be back here again in a few years if they don't put stock back on. Who would have thought closing land to grazing and letting the grass grow out of control would be a fire hazard.

    Driving home from Hornby to Little River around 10.30, I hadn't given the fire much thought until I reached the top of the overpass just after turning onto Halswell Junction Rd from Springs Rd. A large stretch of the hills that run from Halswell to Tai Tapu were aglow with the fire(s). By the time I got to the lights where Halswell Jctn Rd becomes Sparks Rd I could see massive flames. I'd estimate that stretch of fire to be 2-3km long. It was headed South, towards Tai Tapu. I couldn't smell smoke most of the way home but could as I got closer to Birdlings Flat. I'm home, up Western Valley now and the smell is not subsiding. I'll be monitoring this constantly

      Unfortunately, unless they fly a water bomber in from overseas (or have one here for summer from the northern winter) with attendant support (AFF additives, retardants, marker dyes etc.)
      NZ cannot afford to buy or hire a water bomber that could be effective
      The airport is only 8kms away......

      New Zealand have so many topdressing planes that could be called on within hours but probably won't until its a massive fire out of control. They could drop 2,000 litres in one drop

    • @JohnSmith-yv6eq
      @JohnSmith-yv6eq 6 месяцев назад +1

      That's only twice the monsoon bucket..
      and the plane needs an airport...
      admittedly the CHCH Airport is 10km away but that's till 4 minutes flying, landing, turnaround and 4 minutes return,,,..
      a heli dipping a nearby swimming pool can do 10 trips in that time....?

    With the funds raised from the sale of just one seized illegal fishing boat rapeing our waters offshore, we could own adequate fire fighting tanker plains that would do the job, could all residents piss in a bucket because those choppers do little more than that lol.

    NZ like Australia need to build fire rated homes in these high fuel load areas, homes made with steel frames, steel mesh ember gutter guards, aluminium roller shutters, sprinklers on the roofs, eaves that cover walls, verandahs and doorways, water tanks specifically for fighting fires fitted with pumps, hoses & fittings, gardens, and areas around homes fire retardant....measures than can buy time, save lives and property....plus everyone needs a fire evacuation plan because you won't have time nor under stress the ability to think about what to take...Im a veteran Australian fire fighter, I live in a red zone and my go bag is ready & my plan is practised I have less than 10 min to leave, one way out and a city of people to contend with doing just that ... its worth knowing for me & my loved ones I ready

      No;
      but firemen are constrained from taking vids while working.
      The best solution would be a remotely controlled camera broadcasting from the skid of a fire fighting helicopter...
      the pilot would just do the flying and the remote operator on the ground kilometres from the fire could handle the videoing....?
