  • Stancil’s Grocery was the store no one could live without. Broughton Stancil and his family operated the store for 99 years outside of Ball Ground, Georgia. You may have seen stories about other stores but Stancil’s was a one-of-a-kind country store. It was born out of necessity. People in rural Cherokee County could go to town very often. Stancil’s sold a little bit of everything. If Broughton didn’t have it, you didn’t need it.
Walking in the front door you found rounded glass showcases and long counters. Every flat surface was covered with merchandise. What wasn’t on the counters hung from the walls, hats, clothes, tools … you name it. He had everything the community needed to work and live from the cradle to the grave. I thought I would trick him by asking for a horse collar. Broughton said, “What size?” Stancil’s Grocery had cornered the market on horse collars.
This story is a look into the past. Life was simple and not so complicated. Stancil’s Grocery was the place to go for whatever … from soap and shotgun shells … to just friendly conversation. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1974

Long before CNN and Fox News the Traveler series with Andy Johnston was an Emmy award winning program that showcased amazing people, unusual things, local legends, food finds, outdoor activities, folk art, and family fun. In 2022 the Walter J. Brown Media Archives at the University of Georgia founded The Original Georgia Traveler -- Andy Johnston Collection to preserve and maintain the stories.
The Traveler Series celebrates life and living in the United States in the 1970s. Nostalgia, small towns, traditional life and the good old days. The stories give us ways to compare then and now. Folklore, music, handcrafts, vanishing America and unusual people. Funny stories, personal stories and amazing people are in this collection.
This story is presented for educational and preservation purposes and is covered under Fair Use. At the time it was broadcast the television station had a blanket music license with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. The station maintains that license today. All music used is covered under that agreement.

Sadly it seems that TV news is interested in more sensational things and personalities. I always thought the best stories were about real people.

I'm with you. That's why I try to shop with local stores and not the "big box" ones.

He was a good man. It took hours to shoot this story because Mr. Stancil would stop and take care of his customers. Thanks for watching.
