hitachiman I do have a couple of basic color grading videos on my page but plan on doing a more in depth video soon. I haven’t had a chance to try any of the sc or ssc FD lenses yet. I don’t think there’s much of an optical difference tho between the ssc and nfd it’s more just in the build, as the ssc are more robust and built with less plastic
Josh thanks so much for your expertise in these Canon vintage lenses, very detailed and information-laden tutorial. I'm so impressed by the picture and footage quality that comes out of the Canon FD vintage lense paired with the BMPCC4K. This is really amazing, and your cool demeanor presentation is just good. You sure have me hooked line and sinker on the Canon vintage lenses, and the BMPCC4K.
Great info man! Just bought a BMPCC 4K and starting from nothing after selling all my sony gear. From what I've seen on different videos the FD lenses really agree with this camera
Congrats! I love my p4ks. Amazing little cameras. I really like the FD on the p4k. its a great pairing, and they are fairly easy and inexpensive to come by. The biggest expense is the metabones speedbooster, but if you plan on using a lot of FD lenses I think its worth it.

@@joshkiddfilms1295 Hey man. Came in a few days ago and I love what I'm seeing out of this lens so far. I had a quick question if you don't mind -- Would you mind sharing with me the matte box you use for this lens? I have a couple different matte boxes but none of them work well with the front element having to turn to focus. Just curious how you got it working for you as there isn't a lot of coverage for this lens online. Thanks again for making this video! Cheers!
Awesome video thanks for the review on these lenses and the tutorial on how to repurpose these vintage lenses using lens adapter. I love the looks, and character of these lenses.
Thank you very much for this review. I'm zooming in on these lenses right now because of their price range, their stunning image quality and their build. I am in love with the FD 24mm :)

Jose Carlos Vazquez just depends on the lens. I really liked the look of the bpm on the 50-300L...but for majority of vintage lenses I use I don’t use the bpm. As far as the adapter pretty much all the FD to Ef adapters trash the image. Best route is to do a conversion
Jose Carlos Vazquez the metabones FD to m4/3 speedbooster is very great...but the adapters that go from FD to EF have to alter the image in an unnatural way with a glass element and optically it just isn’t great
Any tricks to mounting the metabones fd to micro 4/3 onto the pocket4k? I can’t seem to fit mine on correctly. Seems like there’s a tiny screw in the way...
Derek Kocich did you make sure in the actual adapter you turn the little wheel to the off or closed position. It’s probably in open which prevents it from attaching.
Tena Gibson I did. I went past my personal comfort zone with by committing to turning the metabones into the camera body. I attempted over and over at first and maybe was just too careful. Then I just said fuck it and attached it with force and it clicked on. It’s just an extremely tight fight. Now it attaches with relative ease! Just a tight fit a first. I recommend just going for it!
Dil ki Baat official thanks! Really the only good way to use the FD with an EF adapter like the xl is to convert the FD to EF. Because the FD lenses were original created for 35mm tho, a converted FD wouldn’t vignette at all
Dil ki Baat official I don’t have first hand experience but I’ve heard the actual FD to EF adapters trash the image. Best to do a conversion if you want optimal quality
Dil ki Baat official Ed Mika makes conversion kits. It basically replaces the FD mount with an Ef. You could also send to place like simmod and they offer the service.
That’s a really tough call there’s so many good ones. I think for me I would choose my 20-35L as it’s really versatile and then maybe an 85. 85 L If you have the budget. 85 1.8 if not
Great video! Gorgeous Footage. I've been using Canon FD lenses on my GH5s almost exclusively just like you have with your BMPCC4K. I loved the footage you shot with the 50-300mm f/4 L. I've been thinking about picking one up myself. I was wondering if you could tell me more about how you shoot with that particular lens. Do you attach the lens directly to a more heavy duty tripod due to it's weight? How smooth is the zoom on that lens? You mentioned follow focus. Has your copy been cine-modded? Thanks!
Its pretty large and heavy so I typically use it with a standard 501 type manfrotto tripod. It will work ok with just a plate attached to the collar lock, but it is a bit shaky in the longer lengths. I use it with a rail rig, and a lens support, and follow focus. This has def helped smooth it out a bit, but Im still getting a little micro shaking, and I think its because of the play of the metabones adapter. I think I'm going to need to get something to lock that to the rails for it to be perfect. My gears are also a little tight, so that could be a factor. As far as image goes though, from about 100-300 its really my favorite image of anything I shoot, especially paired with the black pro mist 4X4. The first time I shot that setup I couldn't even believe the screen. If I have the space to use it, its pretty much always my first choice these days
I really appreciated how each piece of footage was labeled! This was so helpful. Have you tried using any of the other zooms? There are a couple that would seem really useful: 28-85mm f/4, 35-105mm f/3.5?
Josh Kidd Films thanks so much for the quick reply. It seems like all the FD lenses are sharp/quality regardless of max aperture. I guess Canon didn’t start making bogus zoom lenses until more recently. Awesome! Thanks again :)
Nathan Bailey sure thing! That’s def an observation I noticed too. For the most part the zooms are pretty sharp. Especially the 70-210 and 35-105. My suspicions are that something about having to add an auto focus system to a zoom causes some of the softness we see in modern zooms.
Jeez. Great video and amazing shots on the 135mm! I have 28mm, 50mm, and 70-210 Canon FD lenses so far on my Sony A7... Am so tempted to also pickup an 85mm or 135mm.
@@joshkiddfilms1295 I'm v tempted... for both lol. cuz on the A7 I won't need a fancy speedbooster and just have regular adapter adding flange distance.
All I use are Canon FD lenses. I shoot with the 24mm, 50mm, 50mm macro, 135mm, 300mm. I'm using the Z-cam E2C. The footage is so much more pleasant to work with in post production than these modern lenses.
Been super busy lately but glad I’m finally able to catch up on your videos. Would love to see a rig setup video showing it fully rigged with the matte box :) if you don’t mind me asking what follow focus do you use??
PetRockMedia I will def make one soon! I’m currently using the red rock micro follow focus just with the wheel. I only have gear for a few of my lenses currently but will be adding more soon
Thanks! My zoom gear doesn’t really rotate at all when I’m focusing, but in general my gears feel pretty loose. I have a follow focus gear around the focus wheel and that likely helps too as it’s very easy to turn and focus on the fly
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Thanks, Im not 100% sure I understood your answer fully, my question probably was unclear :) The reason I'm asking is due to polarized filters, I'm trying to figure out if when focusing the lens if the rotation of the polarizer would change or not :) Or if I would put a clamp on matte box that is attached to the front of the lens itself, if that would work or if it would rotate when focusing :)
ah sorry. I thought you mean was the focus ring causing movement of the zoom ring. I had a bud that had one of these where that was happening. Im not sure the answer to your question though, I will have to look at it when I get home and will report back. :)
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Cool thank you looking forward to it! I havent found anyone mentioning it, was super happy to find someone who have the lens that I could ask :)
Great video Josh! Which speed booster do you use, 0,71 or 0,64 ? We want to shoot a low-budget feature film and a lil bit confused about speed booster. Your answer is really appreciated/ Thank you and good luck!
Hi Josh, I'm looking to use some wide angle lenses (FD) like the canon 28mm on my ursa mini (super 35mm ef). Can you recommend a good adapter? I'm wary of the ones with glass as they crop/zoom the image apparently? Cheers Josh, love your work 🙌🙌🙌
Jonny Noakes hey Jonny, there’s not really a good option as far as an adapter goes. All of them have glass elements and they all trash the image pretty bad. The best way to go is to actually have it converted. You use to could buy the conversion kits from Ed Mika directly, but he stopped selling direct...so you’d need to go through a company like simmod to do the conversion. It’s not super cheap but if you plan on using it a lot on your Ef bodies it may be worth it.
Thank you for the break down of these lenses. I bought the 70-210 for my BMPCC4k and I love it. Only issue is that I can’t adjust the aperture. I read they are locked by design unless mounted to an FD mount? I watched a few tutorials on how to be able to manually adjust it, but when I mount the lens back onto the camera the aperture closes back down and locks. It seems to be locked around F11 or F16. Do I need the metabones speed booster in order to control aperture? I bought the K&F Concept FD to M4/3 Lens Mount Adapter. Regardless. I still love the lens and I’m getting great images from it. Can’t beat the price.
Your adapter should have a little wheel on it that says open and closed. You have to attach the lens to the adapter while it’s in the closed position, and then once it’s attached and you move it to open, it should allow for aperture control. Let me know if that doesn’t work.
Great video. I've been adapting FD lenses for my Fuji X-T2 for still photography and I've been thinking about adapting then for video as well. Your footage looks beautiful with these lenses. I'll have to give it a go.
thanks for this commentary on the FD lenses. You've sold me on FD for my new BMDP4K. You need to demonstrate more on the converter question because some of us are really confused by it. I can't find the speedbooster you refer to. Do you have a link?
I’m going to make a video about it soon, but essentially FD lenses shouldn’t be adapted to EF. The adapters trash the image. For EF use professional conversion is required. The benefit of the pocket 4k is FD is more easily adapted to that size sensor and the mft mount. The beauty of the metabones speedbooster is it adapts the FD to m4/3 and also reduce the crop and adds light. It’s a great product but is now discontinued unfortunately, so it’s takes a little digging to find one.
Thank you! Really the only way to properly use FD on EF cameras without image quality loss is a mount conversion from FD to EF. Simmod is really the only company these days offering this product/service. It’s not very affordable honestly and if you get him to do it it’s apparently a long wait…but once done it really opens up the usability of these lenses. Some people do 3D printed mounts from shapeways for the smaller lenses, but I’ve not messed with it personally.
Just ordered my fl 55 1.2 and curious to see how this vintage craze is going. Interestingly, i love how my 85 1.8 ef usm (which is 20 yrs now, should it be called vintage too?) renders portraits. It has a lovely character. It’s also soft in skin tones. I love that lens
Canon FD lenses are absolutely fantastic! Grew up shooting them on Canon 35mm SLRs and never left them behind. However, note that you will almost always want to stop them down a few stops past wide open. Wide open they have a ton of halation (glow), chromatic aberration, and are generally too soft for anything but an artsy/lo-fi project. But a few stops down they clean up very nicely and can compete with modern lenses on sharpness without losing their charming qualities.
JulianLeBLanc ssc has breach lock mount which can be a little awkward to use, but in general are bigger and feel most robust. Optically the ssc and nfd all have the ssc coating, except for the nfd 50 1.8. The sc are going to have the single sc coating and will likely be the least resistant to flaring and least contrasted. I just like the ease of use of the nfd and their small size
Andrean Octavius yea! I’d probably go with like a 52mm to 77mm or whatever diameter the lens itself is. I am about to do this with all of my lenses, and basically step all my lenses up to 77mm. The only lens that wouldn’t work from this video is the 50-300 as the filter size is larger than they make the filter. You’d have to use a matte box for that lens
thankyouuuuuu Josh! means a lot for your information ! so if i purchase a 24mm FD it's equivalent around 32mm focal lenght when attached to bmpcc4k is it ? (0.71 x 24mm x 1.9 bmpcc crop) just want to make sure anyway 😅🙏🏻
Andrean Octavius yes sir. Your math is correct. For FD lenses though, you’d need to use the FD to m4/3 metabones speedbooster, not an EF speedbooster. Putting these through a FD to Ef adapter causes a big hit on image quality. They can be converted but it’s kind of pricey. That’s the one advantage with the Pentax and Takumars, as they can be adapter to EF through a simple screw adapter that causes no quality loss
ah i see , but actually metabones have FD to m43 speedbooster so why would we need to purchase another EF metabones / adapter anyway ? is there any benefit with that ? sorry if im wrong Josh,
Andrean Octavius no you are correct. If you already had a FD to m4/3 speedbooster that would be all you need for using FD lenses on p4k. There’s no benefit really to having them converted and using through an EF speedbooster, unless you were wanting to use other EF lenses at the same time
It doesn’t really work that way. They make FD to Ef adapters but their corrective element destroys the image. Best to use an FD to m4/3 speedbooster instead
Hey Josh. I love FD lenses in general, but they go to another level on the P4k. You got some really nice shots out of them! I am just starting to piece together my P4k kit with FDs, and I was just wondering - do you have to use any kind of lens support or Metabones adapter support for the 70-210? Any worries in regards to the plasticy body of the P4k and the weight of the lens? That lens is one of my all-time favourites with the way it focuses and zooms. Also recommend checking out the 35mm, if you get the chance!
Quick question...do you think if I got some of these lenses modded with canon ef mounts that I'd be able to use them on the ef to mft speedbooster ultra I already own?
I can’t say from experience as I’ve only had the f2 version, but I’ve read they are optically pretty similar apart from having the lower aperture option.
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Thank you for the feedback. I have some deal here, but I can't find this lenses with the same aperture but same focal length. So I think its okay. Thank you bro, Stay safe
Great video! I'm in need of a long lens, so without using a speedbooster, which FD lens do you recommend? I can't decide between a prime or a zoom (50 f1.4 or 70-210 f4) Thanks!
Ankar Askar how will you be rigging it? Tripod? Monopod? The 70-210 with no speedbooster may be a little long for monopod use without it being shaky, but in general I find the FD zoom lenses much sharper than the modern EF zooms, so sharpness isn’t a big factor imo. I think the biggest difference is just the aperture speeds. The f4 can be a bit limiting unless there’s a lot of light.
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Thanks for the quick response! I will be using it on a tripod mainly for short films, and sadly I have never shot anything longer than a 50mm so I guess 70-210 might be worth it to test out that longer focal range..I checked out your test shots and I am very impressed with this lens tbh, it's around $125CAD but I think I will go for it. Thanks!
I'm getting ready to buy a BMPCC 4K very soon and you sold me on using FD lenses! Just a tip...you look as though you just woke up from a nap. You need to be a bit more awake and pumped up.
@@joshkiddfilms1295 thanks. just trying to judge the image quality whether there's additional glass in front of sensor or if its' just straight up from the FD lenses.
Hey Josh, really useful info here, thanks. Wondering if you declicked the iris for smoother settings on the fly and also if you did FD to EF conversion to the back of lens or just use the adaptor for that before going to speedbooster? Who’s the best company to do the conversions to cine lenses in your experience. Or are there kits you can buy and do yourself? Cheers.
Hey Reginald, when I made this video, I was using the Metabones FD to m4/3 speedbooster with my P4k. Adapting the FD lenses to EF really kills the optical quality, so if you want to use FD with an EF mount camera, the best route is conversion. I had my 20-35L converted by Simmod, and they did a fantastic job. Ed Mika use to sell the conversion kits direct, but no longer does. Theres another company FD to EF, that sells the kits now, but the price is about the same as it costs for Simmod to do the conversion, so it seemed like a smarter option, as the lenses can be tricky to work on.
Regarding the de-clicking, most of the time I don't declick these film lenses, as I have a decent range of 35mm cameras that use the various vintage lenses I have, and the de-clicking cause cause aperture creep on some of them.
Josh Kidd Films thanks for the info Josh - I’ve been buying up some EF-L glass to use on the P4K and could just go with those I guess but for what I am doing I think adding the FD lenses in the mix may really help, if only a subtle difference. I think you’re use of Simmod services makes sense and I’ll likely go the same route. All up after conversion they’re still a great deal. Cheers.
Reginald Worthington totally. I personally think the FD lenses have just way more character in a good way than standard EF. I have a bunch of those too (EF) and they just sit in my bag these days. Check eBay. You may be able to find already converted to EF FD lenses there. That’s the route I would go just because that makes it super easy
@@joshkiddfilms1295 I understand. If I would get it, I’d do so just for it being parfocal. Going from wide to tight still in focus seems like a cool feature
Hi Josh, I have metabones speed booster M43 to EF for BMPCC4k ultra 0.71x. Can I put some adapter EF to FD and use my FD lens with out buy new speedbooster M43 to FD?
Hi appreciate your channel! This vid made me buy an FD 85-300, since the 50-300 is on the pricey side. love the look but there are a couple issues that i wonder if you share using the 50-300. 1. My focus ring is smooth as butter but my zoom ring is a bit stiff :( 2. When I shift the zoom one direction, the entire frame of the shot shifts slightly, clearly something internal happening where there is a little play. 3. Do you use a follow focus with the zoom, because the barrel extends and retracts a good inch, which makes using a follow focus difficult unless I had a 1" ring on the lens which I can't find online. Have you had any experience taking apart any of these lenses by any chance?
Thanks so much! Both of my rings seemed slightly stiff...I think theres certainly some inconsistency there. It sounds like your lens has some breathing going on. The 50-300 was parfocal, so it didn't breath at all. I had a big chunky follow focus gear on the 50-300 that I got from followfocusgears.com. As far as working on FD, I stay away from it. Its extremely complicated and I've ruined a few lenses trying. :)
@@joshkiddfilms1295 yeah i began to take mine apart, but immediately, a screw catapulted out of the housing from a spring inside. luckily i got it all back in and am just gonna let it be. still looks great.
Hey Josh, love this!! Got me convinced on the 24mm 2.8. My question is - If I have the pocket 4k with the metabones 0.64 mft to ef adapter, can I use another adapter to go from FD to EF (which would mean two adapters?) Or would it degrade the image too much...? Thanks Josh!
Hey Jonny, in general I would stay away from FD to Ef adapters. They really trash the quality of the image...they soften it substantially, distort it, and you lose light. The best way to use FD is either with a professional mount conversion to EF, or through a camera that has a more flexible mount.
Hi not sure if this was asked before but I have a bmpcc 4K. What would you recommend to use as an: - adapter - speed booster? Thanks much! Loving your content!
Great video. Which of these lenses do you think works in most scenarios for a narrative filmmaker with a tight budget, perhaps 500 bucks? And what adapter/speedbooster should I get for those lens(es)? I'm looking to buy a BMPCC4K and a set of cheap lenses to start my journey as a filmmaker. Your response would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! I really like using the FD to m4/3 speedbooster when pairing with the p4k. This just makes the focal range a lot more usable. You can find them used for about $300, but totally worth it imo. On a tight budget I’d probably grab a 28 f2, 50 1.4, and an 85 1.8. You may could squeeze in a 135 2.8 as well. They aren’t very expensive
The challenge is going from FD to EF to use with the viltrox. The adapter requires a glass element and it just kind of trashes the image. Most people looking to use FD sets on Ef based camera typically get them converted to an Ef Mount. It can be pricey but worth it if you plan on using your set for a long time
There’s really not a good way to use it with Ef without doing a conversion of the mount. They make adapters, but they have a glass element that completely trashes the image imo. Places like simmod will still do the conversion though. They did one on my 20-35 and it was great
SAPIEN STUDIO yea pretty much. A lot of them are reversible, but there’s just not a good way to keep functionality for both and be at optimal image quality. I love FD’s, but m42 Mount lenses like Takumar are the way to go if you want flexibility. You can attach Ef adapter rings, or FD adapter rings to them. I’m planning on doing a video about this soon.
There’s really not a good FD to EF adapter. They all use a glass element that trashes the image imo. Best thing to do is convert to EF by a company like simmod that specializes in that service.
A lot of my kit has changed since I shot this. In the Canon FD I love the Canon FD-L the most. I’ve added the 24 1.4, 50 1.2, and 85 1.2 since this. In the normal Canon FD i like the 28 f2, 50 1.4, and 85 1.8. I think that’s a killer combo that would do just about anything
I'm thinking about to buy a set of vintage lenses. The FDs seems very fine lenses but I think I will go with something with harder bokeh (like Mamiya, Zeiss Jena MC, or SMC Takumar). If I want smoth Bokehs I can still grab my Sigma Art. It's realy tough to choose from all those great vintage options out there!
These look amazing. I think I’m going to sell all my Rokinon. Do the FDs work with the metabones or do they need to be modified to work w the Ef mount.?
adam dev it depends on your camera body. Metabones does make a Canon FD to m4/3 speedbooster. You can also send to a place like simmod to do a conversion to EF Mount. This is probably the most versatile option as you can then use them on many more cameras.
Hey there. They make the 28mm in a f2, f2.8, and f3.5. Go to eBay and type "canon fd 28mm f2" in the search bar, and it should pull some up. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC1.A0.H0.Xcanon+fd+28mm+f2.TRS5&_nkw=canon+fd+28mm+f2&_sacat=0
Josh, thanks for all the the videos on your Canon FDs. You have some of the best footage out of these lenses I've seen on RUclips or Vimeo. I am thinking of investing in a set of FDs and am debating between the SSC and NFD versions. Optically, I hear they are more or less the same, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Build Quality of the NFDs. I plan on using a follow focus with these lenses (though I think you do not) Do you find any "play" in the NFDs when focusing? Or any wiggle in the mount (Metabones SB)? Thanks again for the videos, instant sub!
Nfd are meant to be lighter and more portable. At that period all the manufacturers were trying to make everything smaller. So strictly from a build standpoint, the ssc is a much more robust build, but optically they are basically the same. I would say for the most part I run into some play with most of my vintage lenses, FD included, when paired with a speedbooster...especially if using like an additional adapter ring like when I use m42 lenses in an Ef speedbooster...but it’s not really a lens issue. It’s more of a speedbooster issue. You really need a cage and something to lock the metabones into the cage with and you should be good to go
@@joshkiddfilms1295 sweeeeet I am looking forward to it.. I actually just kind of discovered the pentax lenses so would def love to see your thoughts on them and even how they compare to other vintage lenses like the canon fds
Depends on the series. The early breech locks tend to flare a good bit more. The ssc and nfd seem relatively controlled and not really an issue in my experience
Metabones made (Not sure if they still do) an ultra speed booster for micro 4/3 that went from FD to m4/3 and it was awesome. I would mainly use that with my FD lenses, and just occasionally would use a dummy adapter if I was wanting more reach out of my lenses
Has anyone more experience with the 50-300mm F4.5? I want to build a kit with mostly primes but I am so curious if the 50-300 could even replace a canon ef 70-200 🤔
Markus Beham so my biggest issue with the 50-300 was, even though it was a gorgeous lens especially in the longer focal lengths, it was just so freaking heavy and you need a tripod to use it without shake. The 70-200 is more flexible in the fact you can use it without a tripod and it has IS.
Thanks so much! I think paring vintage lenses with the pocket really gives it a nice smooth texture and smooth highlight roll off. Also helps take the digital out a bit. I mainly use super Takumar these days
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Interesting - what made you switch from Canon FD to the SMCs? What was the deciding factor that put the Taks over the Canons for you?
al201103 I still really like FD’s...I just moved mainly to shooting on the pocket 6k. It was just going to be very expensive and time consuming to convert my FD to EF, so going to lenses like Takumar that were easier to adapt made sense. That being said, I do want to grab a set of already converted FD-L lenses at some point. They are my favorite looking lenses

Congrats! I love my p4ks. Amazing little cameras. I really like the FD on the p4k. its a great pairing, and they are fairly easy and inexpensive to come by. The biggest expense is the metabones speedbooster, but if you plan on using a lot of FD lenses I think its worth it.

Hi Josh.. wht do you use your FD with black mist? ... Isn't it very soft? And what do you think about FD
Jose Carlos Vazquez just depends on the lens. I really liked the look of the bpm on the 50-300L...but for majority of vintage lenses I use I don’t use the bpm. As far as the adapter pretty much all the FD to Ef adapters trash the image. Best route is to do a conversion
@@joshkiddfilms1295 thanks, even the metabones?, I was considering investing in a metabones just to have a wild angle FD
Jose Carlos Vazquez the metabones FD to m4/3 speedbooster is very great...but the adapters that go from FD to EF have to alter the image in an unnatural way with a glass element and optically it just isn’t great
A wonderfully detailed review of Canon FD lens and footage is really superb.
Thank you so much!
I'm having the same issue, did you manage to resolve it? I have the adapter set to closed too.
I recommend just going for it!
thank you for such great info. i have a Metabones 0.64 xl adapter would i see vignette with FD lenses ?
Dil ki Baat official thanks! Really the only good way to use the FD with an EF adapter like the xl is to convert the FD to EF. Because the FD lenses were original created for 35mm tho, a converted FD wouldn’t vignette at all
@@joshkiddfilms1295 cool. Any adapted you would recommend buying to go from FD to EF without losing image quality
Dil ki Baat official I don’t have first hand experience but I’ve heard the actual FD to EF adapters trash the image. Best to do a conversion if you want optimal quality
I am confused on your mention. How do you convert it then ? From Fd to Ef ?
Dil ki Baat official Ed Mika makes conversion kits. It basically replaces the FD mount with an Ef. You could also send to place like simmod and they offer the service.

Sure thing. I feel like I have seen one before. Ill try and track down
Hi Josh, thank you for putting together this great compilation video. If you were to get just 2 FD lenses, which ones would you get?
I didn't cine-mod it per se...I just bought the gear for it from followfocusgears.com
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Thanks for all the info! I really appreciate it. This helps me out a lot.
fantastic video....i have an xh-1 and. about 5 canon fd lenses and are awesome
Awesome!
I really appreciated how each piece of footage was labeled! This was so helpful. Have you tried using any of the other zooms? There are a couple that would seem really useful: 28-85mm f/4, 35-105mm f/3.5?
Nathan Bailey I had a 35-105 and really liked it. I tried to declick it and screwed it up, but it was a great lens with a really nice and filmic look.

Hi! Nice video! Do the front of the 20-35 rotate when focusing?

@@joshkiddfilms1295 thanks mate! Top man for replying x
Definitely going to be getting some of these in the future!
Erik Werlin awesome! They are so great 🙂
Thank you for the break down of these lenses.

I've been adapting FD lenses for my Fuji X-T2 for still photography and I've been thinking about adapting then for video as well.
Your footage looks beautiful with these lenses.

Thanks so much!
thanks for this commentary on the FD lenses.
I highly recommend the Canon FD 35mm f2 lens with its radioactive thorium element. Extremely sharp lens even for a vintage lens.
Aperture awesome I’ll check it out!
Aperture thanks for the information about the FD 35mm f2, another one for my list.
Very helpfull video! Please consider make something like this about the other great vintages lenses you own!
Will do! On my list of videos to make. 🙂
How do you go about adapting these to an EF mount? Great video!
@@joshkiddfilms1295 how did you get these to mount on your pocket 4k?
@@WriteFilmEdit the best way is by using the metabones M4/3 to FD speed booster, but they also have a non speed booster version you can use.

doughnut shop thanks so much!
For sure! I’ve noticed that too. Thanks for the feedback!
@@joshkiddfilms1295 You mentioned it in your video too, that comment was for all the people who won't watch the whole thing 😉
may i know whats the difference between nFD, SSC, SC? which one should I get ? thanks!
I just like the ease of use of the nfd and their small size
hey Josh thanks for the great review and so informative !
can I attach step up ring for attaching Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter infront the lens ?
Andrean Octavius yea! I’d probably go with like a 52mm to 77mm or whatever diameter the lens itself is. I am about to do this with all of my lenses, and basically step all my lenses up to 77mm. The only lens that wouldn’t work from this video is the 50-300 as the filter size is larger than they make the filter. You’d have to use a matte box for that lens
thankyouuuuuu Josh!
means a lot for your information !
so if i purchase a 24mm FD it's equivalent around 32mm focal lenght when attached to bmpcc4k is it ? (0.71 x 24mm x 1.9 bmpcc crop)
just want to make sure anyway 😅🙏🏻
There’s no benefit really to having them converted and using through an EF speedbooster, unless you were wanting to use other EF lenses at the same time
Zac Efron spittin’ game rn
I actually get that a lot lol
nice video. Please tell me, i have viltrox m2 0.71x version. What adaptor i need between viltrox and fd lens? my viltrox is eos mount. Thank you
It doesn’t really work that way. They make FD to Ef adapters but their corrective element destroys the image. Best to use an FD to m4/3 speedbooster instead

Ryan Wooten my most used FD is the 20-35L. The focal range is just awesome and the image quality is really full of vibe.

I probably did! haha
what codec are you using with these FD lenses? BRAW?
downsyndromearmy55 yes I shoot most everything in Q5 Braw. I would probably use 5:1 for a narrative piece tho, but for weddings Q5 is fine
Meta bone adapt only or speed boost too?
Joe Lam I mainly use it with the speedbooster. Only use a dummy adapter when I am shooting long range
@@joshkiddfilms1295 thanks. just trying to judge the image quality whether there's additional glass in front of sensor or if its' just straight up from the FD lenses.
Joe Lam I don’t think there’s really any degradation of image quality with the metabones. It’s crystal clear
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Good to know. Really liking the footage you have shot. Is the XL or Ultra metabone?
Joe Lam thanks! It’s ultra. The FD to m4/3 doesn’t come in an XL version
The speedbooster works directly with those lenses?
Danyal Fryer yes metabones makes a FD to m4/3 speedbooster than works with the native FD Mount.
I wished you had talked about the 50-300 being parfocal
I should have. I really love that lens and the image it produced, but it was too heavy to be practical for my shooting style. No longer have it
@@joshkiddfilms1295 I understand. If I would get it, I’d do so just for it being parfocal. Going from wide to tight still in focus seems like a cool feature

@@joshkiddfilms1295 thank you
Hi appreciate your channel! This vid made me buy an FD 85-300, since the 50-300 is on the pricey side. love the look but there are a couple issues that i wonder if you share using the 50-300.
1. My focus ring is smooth as butter but my zoom ring is a bit stiff :(
What would you recommend to use as an:
- adapter
- speed booster?
Thanks much! Loving your content!
Thank you! The best option for FD on P4k is the metabones ultra FD to m4/3 adapter by a mile. Amazing quality.
They aren’t very expensive
looks great :) Did you use any diffusion filter on top of the lens?
Thanks! No diffusion except a Vnd
do these wonderful lens work well with the Viltrox Speedbooster as well?
The challenge is going from FD to EF to use with the viltrox. The adapter requires a glass element and it just kind of trashes the image. Most people looking to use FD sets on Ef based camera typically get them converted to an Ef Mount. It can be pricey but worth it if you plan on using your set for a long time
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Okay, so on a BMPCC 4k...sorry got confused..will i need a Micro 4/3rds adapter or it can go straight onto the camera?
Dareck Maurice best way to do it is to use the metabones FD to M4/3 .71 speedbooster. I think zhonghi also makes one but I’ve never used it.
@@joshkiddfilms1295 thx bro your time! love these lenses, will find a way!
Dareck Maurice for sure! 🙂
Hey dude. Love that FD glass. Any ideas on an adapter or better yet booster for FD to EF on the BMPC 6k? Cheers
There’s really not a good way to use it with Ef without doing a conversion of the mount. They make adapters, but they have a glass element that completely trashes the image imo. Places like simmod will still do the conversion though. They did one on my 20-35 and it was great
Josh Kidd Films Man that sucks...does the mod render it useless on a FD mount stills camera?
SAPIEN STUDIO yea pretty much. A lot of them are reversible, but there’s just not a good way to keep functionality for both and be at optimal image quality. I love FD’s, but m42 Mount lenses like Takumar are the way to go if you want flexibility. You can attach Ef adapter rings, or FD adapter rings to them. I’m planning on doing a video about this soon.
Josh Kidd Films Damn that sucks...I shoot film still and couldn’t imagine giving them up just to use on video nooooo
Thanks for your in-depth review! 😁😁what focal reducer do you use btw?
Thanks! I used the metabones FD to M4/3 speedbooster in most of these shots
@@joshkiddfilms1295 thank you so much! currently looking for used one cause Metabones discontinued fd to m4/3 😂
Try this

Which luts or color correction did you used? GREAT!
Thanks! I think when I made this I was using mostly filmconvert to grade. Now I grade mostly manually these days
Greetings Josh. i have a canon LENS FD 85mm 1: 1.2 L and want to connect it to my BMPCC6K. What kind of adapter do i need? and where can i purchase it
Hi there. Best route is mount conversion. They make adapters but they trash the image.
Awesome presentation!
Chris Penney thanks so much!
For the life of me, I can’t seem to find the FD to M4/3 metabones adapter, only the EF TO M4/3. Any help? Link?

Hi, can you please list down the best to good fd to ef adaptors?
There’s really not a good FD to EF adapter. They all use a glass element that trashes the image imo. Best thing to do is convert to EF by a company like simmod that specializes in that service.
If you could only pick 3 of them which ones would you choose?
All of those are great for sure. Such a tough call!
@@joshkiddfilms1295 cool, thanks, i have the BMPCC4k with a EF to 4/3 metabones.
hi i can't find this lens FD 28mm f2 anywhere ? Are you sure it's not the f2.8 ? the f2 i cannot find. thanks
Hey there. They make the 28mm in a f2, f2.8, and f3.5. Go to eBay and type "canon fd 28mm f2" in the search bar, and it should pull some up.

I plan on using a follow focus with these lenses (though I think you do not)
Do you find any "play" in the NFDs when focusing?
You really need a cage and something to lock the metabones into the cage with and you should be good to go
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Good to know. Thanks for the reply, look forward the next video!
Thanks so much!
hey man have you ever looked into the pentax lenses that 50mm looks pretty sweet
A1Bokeh - yea! I use a lot of the k mount Pentax smc. They are awesome. 🙂
@@joshkiddfilms1295 nice man I am really like the vintage lenses when it comes to video . you should do a video like this but a pentax version!
A1Bokeh - great idea! I need to pick up a 35. I sold my 30 I had.
@@joshkiddfilms1295 sweeeeet I am looking forward to it.. I actually just kind of discovered the pentax lenses so would def love to see your thoughts on them and even how they compare to other vintage lenses like the canon fds
Hi Josh, How do you find the lens flare on the FDs?
Depends on the series. The early breech locks tend to flare a good bit more. The ssc and nfd seem relatively controlled and not really an issue in my experience
did you use a speedbooster, can you use it on an FD lens? Ty
@@joshkiddfilms1295 thank you so much for your answer! :)
Markus Beham sure thing!
I have to ask Why do your footage look so damn good, I'm coming from the Pocket 4K/6K video you did and the wedding videos were just too good.
@@joshkiddfilms1295 Thanks for the quick response! Good to know! I'm shopping around for a fast(ish) 24mm for my A6300 (not as lucky as you to have BMPCC!!) - Canon is on my list. I got to try out a Zeiss Contax 35mm 1.4 today! Very very nice, but also pricey!!! Love the look of your footage by the way, don't stop!!
@@joshkiddfilms1295 do you think you would make a video detailing all this in the future
Would you say the fd 28mm f2 is sharper at 2.8 vs 28mm 2.8??
I haven’t ever shot on the 2.8 before so I cannot say from experience, but optically they should be fairly similar with similar glass and the same coatings. I think the differences are found more in the look of the bokeh
Hi. It is possible that the 28mm is f2.8? Because i can´t find the f2. Thank you
No. It is an f2. Both the 24 and the 28 came in three versions...f2, f2.8, and f3.5. The 28 f2 is just somewhat of a rare bird. They pop up on eBay from time to time
