- The new Roku Ultra streaming box isn't the best choice for everyone, but it is the best streaming device you can buy. We only have one real complaint.
The Roku Ultra streaming media player is the company’s flagship. It’s been updated for 2019 with new software, faster performance, and the ability to customize the remote control. These changes make the Roku Ultra the best Roku yet. There’s still room for improvement, but the Ultra is a top-notch choice for media streaming.

Just picked my Roku ultra at Best Buy ! love it turned in 4 boxes to Xfinity and lowered my bill 32.00 a month! I love this so easy to setup and get started! I have the Beta Xfinity acct and it loads all your saved items automatically ! And I'm 70 years old had no problem at all! enjoy

1 thing you did not mention-if you have a portable hard drive full of movies, plug it into the usb jack and watch them w/o having a power supply for the hard drive.
My mum bought 2 of these and I was confused before, now I understand.
Alright
Alright
Dude puts headphones on the wall for decoration! My kinda guy!
That’s what he said
I've been using Roku's since they first launched. In fact I still have the absolute first one they launched tucked away in a box. I have always enjoyed the interface on the Roku to control viewing my apps so much more than the apps built into any of my HDTV's.
For those who have never used a Roku device won't understand the power of Roku! I've recently upgraded my 2 to Ultra and for me it was the last piece of puzzle to my theatre setup!
How was the Dolby Atmos going? was it good? I have a Samsung Q800a soundbar
The newest Gen has Dolby vision and Dolby atmos, can you do video on what Dolby atmos is on the Roku Ultra?
Programmable buttons are what I've been wishing for for so long. It'd make it complete win if all the other bottom buttons were programmable.
It ain't gonna happen. The companies pay roku big money to have those buttons printed and placed on the remote.
hey girl
My 4400R has optical digital audio port for connectivity to my sound system. That port is absent on this unit. Guess they dropped it in favor of bluetooth.
They dropped that since 2017. 2016 Ultra still has the Optical out if you can find one used or new for a high price.
I’m new to Roku, I have it built into my hisense tv. It was great value and the Roku OS is absolutely fantastic. I’m going to get a Roku box in the future when the built in Roku on the tv becomes slow with age.
Danny Liles that won't be for a long time I'm sure cuz the TV will get updates. I just got a 65 inch and a 32 in roku tv last week for my new crib when I move soon
illWillOfficial mines a hisense one and it’s awesome
Danny Liles glad to hear they bro cuz I do as well. Ones for my living room and ones for my daughters room. About to cut direct TV out so I wanted plenty options for smart features on my TV and I'm also gonna get a few jailbroken fire sticks and me and my family will be good to go
The newest Roku Ultra 2020 has both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, which was released today.
What about HD audio like DTS HD MA, DTS: X, Dolby True HD and TRUE HD ATMOS, are they supported on this device, or is it basic DTS and Dolby Digital only?
Once more, just DTS, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Digital Plus, no lossless audio support around here.
@@coloniellizardt4191 That's why the Shield rules!!
@@coloniellizardt4191 Thats a shame, im looking for a dedicated box that i can use with kodi/plex for HD audio rather than using a PC fork of KODI that supports HDR that im using currently. Its a shame as with all the devices i have some do HDR but no HD audio, while others do HD audio but no HDR or 4K. I dont really want to get a shield either as i have heard horror storys of the image quality it outputs at 4K. I may just end up building a dedicated small form factor PC to handle what i want, which is a shame as there is no real reason that boxes like this couldnt handle everything i want, they are just cheaping out on licensing said codecs.
No Dolby Vision, DTS-X or HDR10+ support. Roku fucked up.
No Dolby Vision support. No DTS-X support.
Buy an nVidia Shield 2019 pro instead
I like when the smart TV has Roku as the interface. All in one. You can use the HDhomeRun for over the air channels. And use the Thor petite ATSC modulator to sent the @ Receiver for C band channels!
and I wish the 4 shortcuts on the remote where assignable sucks I only use 1 because the other 3 are not available in canada and my remote for the tv does not have the 1 and 2 buttons 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Get a VPN, switch your country to "America" and now you can use them. 👌🏻
Ok gotta buy this soon, thanks to my Sanyo Smart TV apps being mostly outdated.
Some here I have a sharp thats like 11 yrs old and a vizio that's like 8 yrs old. 💩👎
Man I love this channel! My go to place for electronics information
If it could add actual freeview TV channels, and record them, it would be perfect
I love this video and I will try the Roku Ultra later this year.
Interesting that we are using the word “channels” for various streaming apps
Interesting people are using the word "app" for software programs. Yeah, I know, it's an application software program.
@@solarsynapse uP
My man just said you could watch it for free IF you’re paying for a subscription 🤔
If you’re paying for a subscription then it’s really no longer free? Or am I missing something here 😐
You are absolutely correct....that is the definition of an oxymoron....lol

Just picked up the roku ultra 2019 , 4 out of 5 stars. Works great
How much?
Besides the extra features of the ultra like the find remote button, Ethernet port, etc does the processor inside the ultra really out perform the streaming stick plus? The extra features are nice but my only real question is if the performance of actual streaming differs between them? Such as stability of streaming and app launching quickness etc. If someone could answer that for me id greatly appreciate it 🙏
Can a roku remote work with any tb
I may have missed it but can you reprogram one of the built in buttons? Hulu, Espn etc. Thank you.
Nope, just the #1 and #2 buttons can be programmed.
Very thorough, thank you for this. Was a toss up between Apple TV and Roku Ultra. No more looking, I'm ordering Roku.
Same its 74 dollars now on amazon! I used to use amazon fire tv stick but the roku remote is so much better.
i bought a roku for xmas, tryed it kep shutting down, sent it a back for a firestick
I’ve used Roku for a while. I’m not a fan of its overall look of its UI, and the ads make it feel cheap.
I’ve had a roku for 2 years, and I wish it had folders. I hate the way they pile all the apps into one scroll, one after the other. Placing them where you choose doesn’t really help either
Besides the ads I like the ui it works well and its simple
Love Android TV but the sheer simplicity of Roku for the price I paid made me switch. Love roku!
The 2017 AppleTV 4K still beats a 2019 Roku Ultra with a Gigabit Ethernet port, Siri voice commands for REW/FF content, speed of apps opening and running, and the ability to run multiple streams using the PlayStation Vue, ESPN, and Fox Sports Go apps as well as others.
If you're in the Apple ecosystem, that may be true. But hardware-agnostic is the winning stroke for Roku always in my book. The other factor being that Apple TV is up to twice the cost of a Roku, mostly for a gig port that's largely unnecessary. And FWIW, I've been asking my Google and/or Alexa to FF/Pause/Vol-up/Vol-down etc etc etc on my Rokus for at least a couple years now as well, from any device around the house. Hardware agnostic again.
Well you get what you pay for... AppleTVs processing power is better and it supports Dolby Vision. I find it funny people bring up the cost as a factor when a lot of folks are using it with a tv that’s $1,000+. AppleTVs also support your Geo location same as your cell phone to get local channels when your ISP gives you an out of market IP address. With the Siri remote there’s no need to raise your voice or shout at the tv to fast forward through commercials. 🤣😂🤣
@@GABubba67 Hahaha. Thumbsup. You nailed it.
@Antonio Zamudio This message brought to you by AAPL.
Perhaps a Walmart ONN soundbar with Roku, should be reviewed, claims of Dolby Audio are out there.
Its pure Chinese Crap....a disposable TV that will last no longer than 5 months.
Have a PS4 for PSVue, but Vue will be discontinued in 2 months. Not sure if PS4 will allow RUclips TV app once Vue is gone, or if I'll need a Roku.
I think u did a great job on your presentation, we like the Roku best of all! Thank u 4 your input!
Very helpful! I just ordered my first Roku so exited to get started using it! I should point out though that from what I’m aware of, the power and volume buttons are only on the upgraded remote. The Roku Express and some of the other cheaper versions don’t have those options.
Do you know if just simply adding the voice remote will work with an existing Roku Express stick?
Hi, Good evening from the U.K., Question will this box support DOLBY ATMOS AND DOLBY VISIONS etc, Thanks.
Thanks man!! You are a bless in YT, great content with great info presented on a precise way and common sense!
Last year and the previous years Roku limited the download speed if you used an ethernet connection.Going wireless always gave you the fastest connection speed. Wonder if that glitch has been fixed?
For real🤯??
I only have a wifi connection . Not being able to connect with Ethernet , will I suffer video streaming quality. I'm almost convinced that I should drop my cable connection.
You will if you have Comcast wifi
@Digital Trends Does one need both a Roku Ultra and an Apple TV? I personally prefer Apple TV as I enjoy watching Apple’s Media Events which you can only watch on their device.
I love my Roku premiere, I had the Roku 2 before it and take the 2 to hotels and see if possible to connect. Why did it add ESPN over Hulu and or Amazon?
The quick access buttons vary by where you buy your unit. Regardless, you can add whatever apps you want by just looking them up.
While I have a house full of Roku's, I'd have to say the best "Power User" streaming is an Apple 4K TV .. it's night and day faster, 10X better voice control and it supports Dolby Vision.
@@lbpiercy .. How is the Apple TV closed??

Can't decided if I should go with Apple TV or Roku 🤔
I have 2 two tvs and a laptop do i need three roku devises?
I jusg purchased two of these and I love them! So fast and the picture is awesome!
*I'm happy for you.*
Can u use it with data only ni wifi?
How many free Channels u get?
I am trying to get as much knowledge about Roku as possible because I'm extremely interested. In the State and area I live, we have 1 cable company and the price of cable is BEYOND ridiculously expensive because there are no other carriers and I just can't afford it anymore. So my question is, do you need to have a Wifi portal etc. to connect to Roku to use it? And do you need a smart TV? Thank you so much! Great review! I really appreciate it!
I purchased one and than returned it. They are very limited to sound formats. I have movies and shows that i
have download off the internet and the sound won't play on over 50 percent of them. And less than half of the
private channels work now compared to 2 or 3 years ago.
All the blirps I see say Roku Ultra does support Dolby Vision.
Can you add a portable hard drive from which to play videos? How big a hard drive? Can you network the player to a Windows 10 PC to upload videos? Can you delete videos from the attached drive once they are played? Good review.
Any idea why Ruku will let me enter my email address for Spotify but no password to continue? I do enjoy my Roku and would highly recommend. Thanks for this video.
That happens to me on my phone and I use a VPN because spotify is not supported in my country so I guess you can try a VPN
Hi what is the best non smart TV which supports 4k? So that I can buy this Roku individually
Easier to just buy a dumb-smart tv and don't worry about it's apps. Most 4k tv's have smarts these days unless you buy a monitor instead.
That was a very well done and professional video. Answered all my questions. I may have to upgrade my streaming stick plus. I use it so much it tends to overheat occasionally with 4k content. I guess I would be considered a power user aka couch potato.
I just want to know if it can keep multiple apps loaded or do picture-in-picture between apps. Example: I'm watching a game on Hulu Live, while watching a show on Discovery+. Can I jump between them, like I can on Apple TV, or have one or the other in a picture-in-picture? No one seems to mention that. On Roku Stick, I can't even jump between them because the app has to load each time.
Why has the roku ultra been removed from the Roku page. This is the one I want because it has lan built in and doesn't hang off your tv
Can you play movies downloaded on a usb or external hdd. And what formats will it accept
And what audio formats will it accept.
I’ve played tv shows and movies on my Roku plugging in a usb drive. I believe they were in .mov format.
Im currently using a WD live media player. It’s plays mkv and accepts dts audio, so far it Accepts every file I’ve got.
What's the difference in feature set between the New Roku Ultra in this video and the Roku TV? Which Roku version is built into the TV?
Odd comment, but I always thought Epix was pronounced like "epics". E-pics makes sense though.
It is pronounced Epics, this is a channel telling you the Roku is the best power user streaming player when Nvidia Shield Pro exists. Hopefully that doesn't sound too harsh, but yeah.. lol
How do you think THIS YEAR'S 6 Series will compare to last year's 8 Series, considering they are both QLED and Mini-LED?
I bought A Roku Ultra for my large screen TV and now just 10 days later I am returning it. I have tried several channels and most constantly buffer which is annoying. Other channels seem to be OK. The Amazon Prime channel buffers like every 15 seconds or so, making watching movies almost impossible. On my regular computer Amazon Prime runs perfect without buffering. I had the Roku hooked up using a LAN line and not using WIFI, so it should have had a good signal. So I am not sure what is going on, but I figure for me it would be better just to hook my computer up directly to my large screen TV and watch Amazon Prime that way. Another thing to be aware of is Roku requires your credit card info on it's website to install Roku. You can get around it by doing a web search on how to do a setup without a credit card but you should not have to.
I wish roku would give us an option to power these down instead of leaving it on 24/7 like a power parasite
Hit the home button and it powers itself to sleep in a few minutes. I'm shocked people don't understand this. If you leave it on an app screen the system thinks you're still using it. Just go to the home screen.
@@pietossing hi, do you have any suggestions for a powered hub for the Roku ultra? I try using an USB external hard drive and the Roku just lack the power to operate the USB 3.0 drive.
Thanks in advance.
pie tossing this is not true, only the roku 4 will power off. All other roku display a screen saver, even if you go to the home screen
If your TV has a USB port you can plug in the Roku's power source into the USB port and whenever you power off the TV the Roku gets powered off along with it. The next time you power on the TV the Roku will start up again.
@@speedracer9132 You do understand that's not using but MINUSCULE amounts of power, right?
Is the remote only Bluetooth? We are trying to reduce RF/EMF overall and would love it if it was infrared as well.
How do I get KODI onto the ROKU UKTRA? Please show step by step. Thank you.
I have 2 TVs in my home. DVR is in my son’s room for cable connection reasons & the other is in the living room with wireless box. My cable is service is a bundle with AT&T Uverse & Internet. Can I cancel Uverse, keep Internet, and get Roku Ultra instead of having cable? Also what do I do with second TV? Do I need to buy a Roku for that one too?
Without getting into many details about why this is important, can you operate a single Roku device using 2 separate remote controls in the same room?
Great device been using Roku since day one.
But can I use this in Bangkok?? Thanks!
But what about the performance in terms of switching channels on live TV like AT&T TV Now or HULU or Sling TV?
Asking the real questions...
@@jameswebb321 I have AT&T TV Now and switching from one channel to another channel takes as long 13 seconds. And don't let me get started on the bizarre *_non-commercials_* that do nothing but show a static picture of ESPN or AT&T TV logos for about 20-45 seconds.
Question: I stream with a laptop connected wirelessly then plugged into my TV via a HDMI cable. Will a Roku devise replace my laptop drawing its internet connection also wirelessly or what would you suggest?
So with roku do you have to have an account for all the apps? & does it really have another of shows available?
Any new info on Dolby Vision support? I like my Ultra but DV is a must on my newest x950g and so far the internal aps seem to beat out my Firetv cube and my Ultra. Still yet to try Apple TV.
Why advantage does it give over laptop/pc/mac attatched to the monitor?
I'm am thinking about getting a Roku whenever I get a Chance and I can't Wait 😱
I really think you should it’s amazinggg I got mine a couple days ago and it’s very easy to use and personalize
Yes it gives you the option not to have to enter your credit card.
If I have a soundbar how exactly I connect it? Do I need to connect the soundbar to the TV directly with HDMI and the Roku will be connected also to the TV separately with another HDMI? BTW - would be better if the Roku or any other streaming device would have an optic audio connection...
can you do a video on how to unlink an old roku stick to the new roku ultra? I read that should deactivate any old devise.
And still The nvidia shield TV is still number one and this year they released the nvidia shield tv pro with some new features that make it even better
I just got the brand new 2020 4800R roku ultra and its awesome
Does it support atmos?
Is the AC adapter included still a universal power supply (100V-240V) thanks
whats the difference between the violet and black box? both are roku ultra
Is there a way for the roko to only show the movie options on the apps installed?
Because it’s better than Cable I really like my ROKU because it’s fast, has better quality and looks as good as satellite
I think I may get one now.

@@darekm6859 lol I have a roku HD on another tv and while laggy I still use it and it's fine. I have noticed roku has updated it to the point of being obsolete recently which is annoying. It worked so well when I bought it years ago. Gotta love disposable streaming boxes
Yeah the roku ultra is 50 dollars at most places right now and that's a pretty good deal.

Agreed, their current UI while simple & easy to navigate is slowly getting more outdated now.
I would like there to be a more customisable interface, like splitting up the apps into categories

Do I need to purchase an HDMI Cable ?
Shouldn't you mention this ?
I am wondering the same thing.
Yes you will need a HDMI cable if you want to use this for your TV. They are not that expensive if you get one on Amazon.
For my roku (Roku Premiere) I got an Amazon Basics HDMI cable. It suits my needs as I currently don't have a 4K TV. It does 60 Hz at 1080p, and 24 Hz at 4K. So it does fine on some 4K TVs and most HD TVs. The Roku Premiere comes with its own HDMI cable but it isnt long enough.
Damn, Duracells instead of offbrand batteries. Thank you Roku, that's a rare bird in batteries. I am a Firestick user, but that definately says something about Roku right there.
