Thanks for the video. I’m purchasing this for my mom, she’s 80, has an Apple that she can’t really use. I also appreciate the link to pairing a new remote. I can help her with Roku, I bought the first model & have the ultra. I’m sending her you’re video to help us set it up via FaceTime. Keep up the good work.
I’m thinking of getting a Roku. I canceled my Amazon Prime account for a lot of reasons. And without an Amazon prime account, the Fire TV devices are limited. I’ve also had lagging problems with all my Fire TV devices. Lagging and they also kicked me back too the Home Screen. When I discovered the Roku channel I really liked it. Roku is in a class all by itself. When I canceled my Amazon prime account, I unplugged my FireTV device.
You did an awesome job on this review! I have Firestick and a Nivida device, but Roku is my favorite go-to device. I was searching to compare if I should get another Ultra or get the Streambar? I came across your video. I gotta say although I have the device you were reviewing and use it daily- I learned some things I didn't know about it! Lol, now have my 1 & 2 buttons programmed ;-) Thanks for doing such an in-depth review. Have you compared the Ultra & Streambar? Living in a condo I don't need a soundbar with big base, so with the prices right now about the same- I thought why not get the Streambar. Reading up on the two I read that the Ultra is Roku's best option for the fastest WI-FI transfer speeds and better than the Streambar. Heard the Streambar remote doesn't have the side plug-in option for headphones like the Ultra does. (Yet seeing the box it looks like it offers it.) Also, I read no direct ethernet on Soundbar & the wifi transfer rate is not as fast. I'd love to hear what you think about the differences between these two units. The soundbar would be better than my tv sound that's for sure, but I don't want to lose specs, features or quality for it. Reviews on the Streambar are mixed. Putting the speaker part aside and comparing the abilities of the two what do you think? Ultra or Streambar?
I tend to feel the same way. I keep going back to Roku even with large list of other streaming products I have tested. As it so happens I was just working on finishing up editing my review of the Roku Stream Bar today. I can confirm that the remote that comes with it does not have the plug for headphones, however, if you really want it you can pair another remote that you already have that has it to the Stream Bar and use it that way. I tend to always have two remotes paired to my Roku at any given time. You are also correct that the Stream Bar does not have a direct wired connection. I was a little disappointed in that, but if you have a good signal strength you do not need to worry. Personally I don't feel you would be missing out too much going with the Stream Bar over the Ultra, and having lived in a condo myself up until recently the Stream Bar would be a good size that will give you better sound and not annoy your neighbor. However, I am all about helping people make up their own minds, I don't normally do this but.... ruclips.net/video/a8NLNb2cY54/видео.html, this will take you to the unlisted video for my review of the Stream Bar complete with sound test before it goes live in 2 weeks. This way you can decided for yourself which is the right fit, while Roku has those sweet sales going on.
Nice review and certainly better than most. It would have been nice if you showed how to "cast" from other devices. Also is this devices Bluetooth feature only a receiver OR does it transmit/pair to external Bluetooth speakers to take advantage of the better sound the video supports? Lastly what version of Bluetooth is it, perhaps v5 ?
Ok, thanks for the feedback, I forget that not everyone knows how to cast from a device. The Bluetooth is only to receive audio from a device. Sadly there is no documentation on what Bluetooth they are using in this device.
Huge Help since our cable provider is dropping their tv lineup and replacing with an app. Purchsaing three units to access the new app for three tv viewing.
regardless of what your wi-fi strength might be. Having the option of plugging direct from your router to the box is the better option. Guaranteed solid signal strength than possibly up and down inconsistent wi-fi signal.
I have tested the Google Chrome cast if you are looking for something like that I might suggest checking out the Nvidia Shield which I have also reviewed: ruclips.net/video/6nk15I2apq4/видео.html. It will give you the same UI but more power and the ability to hardwire it to ethernet.
@Wanderer001 Reviews that's a higher price point and it seems more targeted for gamers. I'm just streaming shows/movies. And use kodi. Just tried updating kodi and my android box won't support kodi v20.
I bought a Roku Ultra 4800RW version a couple of months ago and went to set it up today and had problems from the get go. First it wouldn't update itself and give me an activation code. Finally after about 20 minutes it eventually did. I got logged into all of my paid channels except for Netflix and no matter what I did I couldn't get Netflix to work on it. I was on the phone with Roku and Netflix support for about two hours combined and still never resolved the issue. It never goes to the log in screen and instantly sets a NW-8-19 error code. I almost took it outside and smashed it on the ground. I finally unhooked it and put it back in the box and hopefully I can find the receipt so I can take it back to Walmart. I ended up hooking my Roku Ultra 4600 back up and all of my paid subscriptions work fine including Netflix. I'm not sure what the problem is but I'm not impressed with it. The 4600 version has occasional issues where you have to totally reset it and activate it again and is why I bought this new one. When it finally dies, I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
When you're watching a RUclips video in the app, does it give you the option on the video screen to skip to the next video or back to previous video? It looks like the remote only has fast forward and reverse. I find that very annoying and could be a deal breaker. My Sony TV remote has fast forward/backward as well as skip forward and go back to previous video that I use all the time.
Man, every video of the Ultra I've seen and the remote has a battery. I tugged and tugged on that Roku fabric at the end of the remote trying to get it to open only to learn mine charges USB-C!!!!!!!!!
My Ultra has a rechargeable remote and not one with batteries. I wish it did, actually. I just cannot replace batteries if it does not work. With this one I have to buy a new Ultra remote instead of a standard remote with two AA batteries. I smoked one remote with the last ROKO Express that I had and my Roku Express died in a year and one half which meant I had to replace it and set up everything on it, again. I wish Roku had a way to backup its settings to a thumb drive or one of my iPads. This would make replacing or upgrading them a lot easier. As it exist, now, this sucks.
I can understand that, not for not as long as you get a wifi remote you could pair it to your roku. So you could get one that used batteries if you wanted to. But I do understand not wanting to pay for something extra.
I read a bunch of reviews where they had all sorts of audio problems, such as audio syncing was off and the picture would go out and some hdcp problems. Did you notice any of these problems?
Great review. I really like my 2018 Ultra. I was tempted to replace it with this model, but the lack of being able to increase the memory with a MicroSD card was a strike against it for me. That was a huge disappointment to me, because the provided memory gets filled up pretty fast. For about $20.00 I could get 128 gigs of added memory for my 2018 model. Otherwise, IMO the Ultra is still the best.
I thought I would mind not having expandable storage. However I find myself using the same 6 to 10 channels which this version of the Roku can handle just fine. And for any of the channels that don't get saved on to the memory when I click on them the Roku just downloads it back to the device. So for me 30 seconds for downloading have a channel that I don't watch all that often doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.
Also, when setting up my Ultra, I got a message that I needed to "upgrade my HDMI cable in order to get 4k video" and then only gave me an option to play 1080P to continue with the set up. I was using (as said here in this video) the "premium HDMI cable included in the box" with the Ultra and my TV is a year old 70" Samsung. I will see if I can readjust the settings later this AM. I have a newer Apple TV box thats been connected without an issue. Everything goes through my home theater receiver...
@@Wanderer001_Reviews No, but thanks for the idea. I manually change it to the 4k setting but keep getting the message my TV is unsupported then downgrades me as stated above. I'll try your suggestion but I am going through my Sony receiver (also 4k capable) and I wonder if that's why and it's a software issue? Maybe an update is needed? Also, I get no such messages on my Apple TV 4k going through the same receiver.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Forget it, I can see my Apple TV reading 2160p which is 4k. So there's an issue with the Roku not playing nice with my setup, which is unfortunate. A software update is obviously needed.
On the Roku website, it says that the Ultra has 50% more wifi range. I have a Roku Streaming Stick that, at the time, said it had the longest wifi range, which is what I am looking for, since I want to use it in an outbuilding that is about 60 feet from my router. The Streaming Stick will work sometimes but I have to restart my router several times a week and the streaming can be very choppy or won't connect to my wifi at all. I am wondering if the Ultra will do a better job for me? We have looked all over the Roku website to find out what the 50% more range actually means in feet or distance and cannot find the information and we have also tried several times to get in touch with Roku support and have not been successful. Would you know the answer for me? Sorry for the length of this "comment".
It's very hard to find actual specs or numbers on Roku site. Which version of the stream stick do you have? I'm not sure if the Roku Ultra would do any better than the Streaming Stick. You might actually do better with some sort of Wi-Fi mesh Network to increase the signal strength in your outbuilding.
Not true about the Roku Ultra LT...Mine wasn't from walmart, I got mine yerars ago,...mine has Dolby and it supports Apple and 4K HDR, it also has a pairing device, just doesn't have the usb port, not sure about the remote finder. However, your vid was very informative, thanks for your info. Unfortunately, it says our tv isn't supported by 4K. But for some strange reason, I think it is. It doesn't have the Sling button either.
Hi, do you happen to know when using the USB port playing a five minute movie…Is there a repeat or replay option so it will play over and over again for a couple hours wanted to know this before I purchase. Thank you.
mute is the number one button on any remote. this way you can mute out the commercials that are pandering to what you do not like, want, need, or afford.
I bought a renewed one off Amazon and it had problems. It would not pair to my big Samsung tv. The remote would also not charge. Amazon replaced it without any problems. I have not put the replacement device on my tv, yet.
Sounds like you might have a new version of this as the remote I have uses batteries. Was it the remote that would not pair with your TV? The Roku itself should just need to connect to your TV via a HDMI cable.
If you attach an external hard drive to the Roku that has video or photo files on it you can play them on the Roku however you need to download a specific Roku media player Channel in order to access those files.
yea i just use my phone for acontrolle since the app is free... and put the controller away.. i am always i reach of it.. so why try to keep up with another remote
The SD card slot was mostly for the off loading of channels if you had to many on the device. For most you would not run up to that number. Also Roku kept the USB port so you can still use a hard drive to watch your video files from.
can adverts on the right be removed. im shied ower and not happy when ui changed and now constantly geting disney advertising on the overpriced shield pro.
I find that apps are different on different platforms....in fact, an app like RUclips has different features on different platforms. On a PC, you have all features like slow and fast speeds, 360 videos, comments, etc. With other devices, many of these features will be absent. Some will have the feature and it does not work, like slow/fast speeds have no sound. No one ever covers this
I think that might be in part to people reviewing platforms and not the apps across different ones. Most people only want to know how something works in one place. Knowing that there are different options out there can be confusing.
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about this, I have been reading lots of reviews and it looks like the 2022 model has rechargeable batteries and the others do not
The thing that i hate about roku is that you have to type in a credit card number to create a roku account Im not sure that its legal to require a credit card for free content I bought one of the first roku devices (roku1) when roku hit the market i payed 50 dollars for it (wasnt worth it) even then the roku box was painfully slow to load and absolutely annoying to type with the remote im sure hoping roku has changed in the tenish or so years theyve been around At the time i didnt know about android tv boxes if i had i wouldve got one of those instead theyre cheaper do more and dont require a credit card
I understand that the Credit card requirement is a pain. I don't like it myself either. But, there are ways around it. Roku does this because not everything on the Roku is free so they want to try and make it simpler to get those by having a credit card on file. I have been using Roku as far back as the Roku 2 XS, they have been getting better over time. As for android boxes I have tried a few and they can vary in power greatly. Last you can use the Roku app to type things on Roku instead of hunting and pecking with the remote. Which is helpful.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews well I suppose the the app could help Reason I'm liking the the Android boxes better is because they can run emulators up to PS1 really well and some N64 and PS2 As for needing a credit card on file to make things easier I don't really believe it to be easier I kinda see it as a security risk as we all know hackers thieves and Lord knows who else are always trying to get ones information big companies with lots of numbers are always the first on the list
I can agree with the emulators. Roku definitely seems to be strictly for streaming of content. As for security concerns with the credit card I understand that too. That's why I use a service called privacy.com. might be worth looking into.

Iam going to hook up an roku ultra lt the remote does not have the 1 & 2 buttons?
Seems correct I believe the LT model is a Walmart exclusive. So a little cheaper and you just miss out some functionality on the remote.
mute is the number one button on any remote. this way you can mute out the commercials that are pandering to what you do not like, want, need, or afford.
Will the remote still work if I hide the box behind my tv?
Yes the Roku does not use IR to control it. So you don't need line of sight with the remote to control it.
Brilliant explanation of features etc.
Happy to help.
How did you screen record your Roku device?
I used a capture card: ruclips.net/video/nfWMnuG1j40/видео.html
Can I disable Netflix playing HDR if I choose 4K only in the settings?
You might be able to, however you might need to change that option on your Netflix account.
Can you use the USB3.0 to attach an external HDD to store downloaded movies from Disney+, Vudu, ETC?
It should work, however, the Roku does not support the downloading for content from these providers.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews
That's unfortunate....missed opportunity really
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Can I play my videos from an external hard drive or flash drive?
would you be kind and answer external drive connectivity functionality. thanks
If you attach an external hard drive to the Roku that has video or photo files on it you can play them on the Roku however you need to download a specific Roku media player Channel in order to access those files.
What a great review. Thank you very kuch, very helpful and complete info.
so it works on your tv without a cable provider?
If you have home internet, it does..
yea i just use my phone for acontrolle since the app is free... and put the controller away.. i am always i reach of it.. so why try to keep up with another remote
I sat for 35 min waiting to see what USB port was for and how to use it. You brought up a menu with the USB listed but passed over it.
It is to play your personal media on the Roku. In order to do that you will need to Roku media channel.
Why buy the 9th generation ultra, that doesn't allow to Isert micro SD card 32gb or 64 gb?
The SD card slot was mostly for the off loading of channels if you had to many on the device. For most you would not run up to that number. Also Roku kept the USB port so you can still use a hard drive to watch your video files from.
Is it worth paying $20.00 more for a Roku Ultra 2021 vs the 2020 model?
I am going to say save your money. The small update will not be noticeable.
Does Roku still make a device that supports AV cables , I still have an older TV
Not anymore. The Express + used to have AV cables but now they only have HDMI cables.
U can get an HDMI to AV splitter
That is true, you just don't get something like that in the box with this.
Christ pal, you can pick up a smart TV for less than 100 pounds nowadays. Get your cheap ars* a new tv
Does the tv have to be Smart TV?
It does not. The Roku acts as a stand alone device to make your TV smart.
how much is the roku ultra 4800??
Amazon has it for about $62.
needs a cradle for it to sit in for charging up rechargeable battery's in the remote.
This remote does not have rechargeable batteries. There is a pro version that does have them.
ultra LT will not connect to my spectra internet even if it is wired ?
Should not matter. Can you connect via Wi-Fi?
I reset ok now thank you
can adverts on the right be removed. im shied ower and not happy when ui changed and now constantly geting disney advertising on the overpriced shield pro.
Sadly it can not. It is one of the hard coded add placements areas in the Roku UI.
Can you add an external 2tb drive to watch your movies
You can, but you will need to either set it up as a PLEX library or use the Roku USB channel to watch anything on the hard drive.
Will it work with Netflix atmos using a projector.
That I am not sure of. While the Roku might support it I want to say your hardware, in this case the projector must also support it.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews I have my roku connected directly to my athem avm70 processor not my projector.
Oh you should be good then.
How to connect OTA antenna to the Roku Ultra?
You can not. OTA use COAX which is not supported as an impute method of the Roku Ultra. COAX would normally be plugged into the TV.
Mine don't have the remote finder. I will have to purchase a better model like this.
Even this one you can get on a deal as they now have a 2024 version. So this one will be cheaper, but is still good. I am using it still myself.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN ULTRA 2021 AND ULTRA 2022?
Right now nothing that I can see. The only one that would be different is the Ultra LT vs the Ultra.
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about this, I have been reading lots of reviews and it looks like the 2022 model has rechargeable batteries and the others do not
The thing that i hate about roku is that you have to type in a credit card number to create a roku account
Im not sure that its legal to require a credit card for free content
I bought one of the first roku devices (roku1) when roku hit the market i payed 50 dollars for it (wasnt worth it) even then the roku box was painfully slow to load and absolutely annoying to type with the remote im sure hoping roku has changed in the tenish or so years theyve been around
At the time i didnt know about android tv boxes if i had i wouldve got one of those instead theyre cheaper do more and dont require a credit card
@@Wanderer001_Reviews well I suppose the the app could help
Reason I'm liking the the Android boxes better is because they can run emulators up to PS1 really well and some N64 and PS2
As for needing a credit card on file to make things easier I don't really believe it to be easier I kinda see it as a security risk as we all know hackers thieves and Lord knows who else are always trying to get ones information big companies with lots of numbers are always the first on the list
I can agree with the emulators. Roku definitely seems to be strictly for streaming of content. As for security concerns with the credit card I understand that too. That's why I use a service called privacy.com. might be worth looking into.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews well im not really sure which route im going im purchasing either roku nvidia shield or another chinese android box
The person that getting this gift is a movie person and a retro gamer so makes it hard to decide as all units have there ups and downs
@@GeorgiaRidgerunner Oh if that is the case I might go more to the nvidia shield. It is a little more pricey but I have tested it too and it is still my go to android tv box. It is great for those that game as well. ruclips.net/video/6nk15I2apq4/видео.html.
will it work wit a dumb tv?
Yes it will. Just need and HDMI port.
This device can install Third Party apps?
NO need to go through Roku store.
Did I understand this device will be able to mirror Apple Devices via Apple Airplay
That is correct. However, I do not have any Apple devices to test to make sure of this.
Yes it does
Outstanding!
Can it play content from Vudu?
It can.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews thanks. I have read elsewhere that someone had an issue with it. Disgusted with my sony BD player that has issues streaming and don't want to spend more $$$ on another "issue" piece of equipment.
Great video! Idiot that I am, I didn’t realize my remote is rechargeable that I just plug my charger into. No replacing batteries.
Nice sounds like you got the slightly upgrade version then what I have. No rechargeable remote for me.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Just got it. Love the fact that I don’t have to press the mic button to do anything.
will they take your old roku? I dont need it if you buy a new updated one
At this time there is no trade-in service with Roku.
Perhaps give it to a friend or relative or your local Senior Center etc.
Can I stream my cellphone screen and watch facebook videos?
The Roku does support screen mirroring.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Could you recommend one that does please?
@@AstorSkywalker It is build into the OS of the Roku so all the boxes and sticks can do it. Not sure about the TV's but they should as well. www.tomsguide.com/us/roku-screen-mirroring-tutorial,review-3575.html
What about Roku HD
Are you asking about the Settop box "Roku HD" or does this one do HD?
Very helpful 😊👍
I hate it when Roku puts out a new software version for my Roku TV and
I have to reinstall all my streaming apps.
That does sound pretty bad. The set top boxes don't have an issue like that.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews
It doesn't happen with every upgrade and I suspect when it happens
to one user, it happens to all users. But hopefully they have resolved
this issue forever.

If you are talking about the user interface part, you do not need to go through all of that to set this up. I just showed all the options for those that might want to dig into the settings.

Got this same unit today and it’s a piece of crap.
Nothing will stream. Just get a spinning circle in every app.
My outdated Apple TV was streaming fine last night and this morning. Also the roku showed a good connection.
Problem is it’s a piece of crap. Returning tomorrow and going back to Apple.
I’m so disappointed and irritated right now.
Crap I tells ya.
That sounds more like a connection issue. Did you hard wire this or were you using WiFi?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews tried both ways WiFi first then wired with same result.
@@chrisstellers3419 Well that is a shame. I am kind of in the reverse of your situation. I picked up an Apple Tv to test out, and not being in the Apple universe it does not like the Apple account I set up to test it. Says I need to up date it. So right now it is just a paper weight. >.
EDIT:
Returned this unit and got the smaller $30 dollar version and it works fine.
Maybe a bad unit.
