Building A Traditional Carpenters Toolbox! (START to FINISH)

- Welcome back to the shop! Today's video is a movie style time-lapse of building my timber frame or traditional carpenters toolbox. The video spans about 2.5 weeks. The toolbox is made from clear grain poplar and the Handle is walnut harvested from our property here in Tennessee. The toolbox was designed so that my timber framing hand tools will fit and can be carried to the job site. The design was inspired by the NORTHMEN GUILD. For this build, I used a combination of hand tools and power tools. The hand tools work really well for the jointing of the boards and the intricate parts of the build. All the dovetails and rabbets were cut by hand. The power tools really speed things along for cutting boards to length and dimensioning the stock. Thanks for watching!

The toolbox dimensions are ~37” x 9.5” x 15” and the handle is 1 1/2” diameter!
Well done, letting your child be a part of crafting such a fine piece! Hopefully he'll treasure it long after you're gone.
I still use the one my grandfather made me... 60 years ago.
This was the most relaxing build video I ever saw! I love the music and the sound of your work, that just said it all - I was mesmerized! Great craftsmanship. Also love that your dog and you boy were part of the story!!
Mark Kubowitsch thanks a bunch! This is my favorite kind of video to make.
There is something about a video that has nothing but soft music and the sound of hand tools. Relaxing.
This is beautiful. I want to build this just to have a cool box.
Thank you very much! This is my favorite type of video to make!
Thank you sir. Really like how you put the interior dividers in before you attached the bottom 👍🏻
Nice looking tote! It's always good to see young ones helping in the shop.
Thanks Robert! I hope he will continue to develop an interest in the craft.
Not just helping, but learning.
Beautiful toolbox, more like a piece of furniture. Nice video too.
Thank you very much! My favorite kind of video to produce!
Good solid tool box. You will be happy whit that. Well done.
Thanks you! I'm gonna need to work out to lift it. lol

Maybe the handle is a bit thick. Give it a diet and a little curves. 😁
Found this mesmerising to watch. Thank you.
Thank you! I love creating movies like this about building with wood. Check out my guitar build video, it was my greatest achievement on video IMO!
Just perfect!
Great build, Daddio. The only thing I would do differently is add dovetails to connect the bottom, which you didn't do. They would add way much more strength to the bottom, and when carrying heavier tools, as I used to do as a commercial carpenter, a fallout would never be a consideration.
Look forward to watching the timber frame build.
After watching a thousand build vids over the years they get a lil ho hum. At this stage I watch Izzy and John and Paul and Stumpy looking for trix and techniques and new ideas. But I will say that for whatever the reason I like this vid very much. Goathead sez nice stuff.
Thanks Bill! Those guys are the pros.
Great build! Beautiful workmanship and the best part was having your son work with you.
Thanks! He has a short attention span but seems interested. I'm easing him in to the addiction! lol
It's more of a work of art, turning g into a tool box. Excellent craftmanship. 👌
Thank you very much! It was a fun project and one of my favorite videos on my channel! Thanks for watching!
inspiring. I like and envy your patient, mindful work method.
I hope we have skill like you one day! This is beautiful 😀
Thanks a bunch!
Thank you, I enjoyed the build. Great job, classic simple and functional design, I'm still practicing the dovetail 🤔🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️😂🤣.
Thank you!
What a beautiful video! Nice work! Your son and grandchildren will use the box for sure. Lasting build!
15:50 ooouuucch!!!!
Veramente un bel lavoro, complimenti per l'abilità che hai di lavorare con gli utensili manuali. Bravo 👍🇮🇹 complimenti anche per la scelta della colonna sonora 😉👍 è stato un piacere guardare il tuo video
Thanks for commenting. I will need to translate later!
smells good ! can't wait !
Several years ago I built a box similar to yours. I used 3/4 plywood and I had two drawers in the bottom for chisels and misc small tools. The box looks really cool and works great. The down side is it’s weight prohibitive. Empty it weighs approximately about 25 to 30 lbs. with tools it’s 50-60+.
I’m thinking of adding a set of wheels and a tow handle. That way I can move it like towable luggage! Yours looks a lot lighter and more user friendly!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Simply beautiful in every respect. The music, the filmography, the sound of the tools and of course the result. Subscribing for more. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Perfect 👍🏻😊.
Glad u like, Stephen!
In the beginning i thought you changed your mind and decided to build a piano...lol...just kidding. Dad always told me " if its worth while doing then its worth while doing right". Nice job.
Lol! Yes sir! If it’s worth doing, over do it!
Luv your work mate
Thanks Robert!
Nice build buddy!!
Thank you very much!
Nice work Jim ! Just found it. Notifications had been changed somehow. Really nice work👍👍👍
Thanks David! I knew I hadn’t heard from you.
LastingBuild Been in woods a lot but must have hit wrong button but will keep a check from now on
No worries! It’s hard for me to know if youtube notifies folks or not about new videos.
LastingBuild it is suppose to but stuff has been happening with it or it could have been me accidental pushing wrong button. Need to wear my glasses 🤓 more! Ha
Nice job on that tote Jim! I see you had your son involved in the project too.
Thanks! He oiled it for me👍
Show... Parabéns pelo seu trabalho
Tremendous detail with hand tools. Always wondered if hand cut dovetails on the end boards will hold up given they are running with the long grain of the wood
So far, so good!
Howdy from Corpus Christi Texas. Outstanding video 👍 👍
Looked really good perhaps a close up of it next video maybe?
For sure!
Or the measurements I liked yours a lot.I saw Paul Sellers one but yours is much better. That 78 of yours is nice worked well.Ive never regretted buying mine
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
12:12 Whatcha doin', Dad? LOL
lol! He better keep his nose away from the sharp blade! That would not be pretty!
Nice friend ! The only thing I would have changed ( just my opinion) is to inset the bottom up in to the the box put dowels in to hold the bottom in the weight will be super heavy = the other thing is to make the ends taller 18" then you don't have to bind over to reach the handle = time will fill that box up enormous weight = but nice job SIR
timber buckets phil thanks a bunch! It’s definitely heavy as lead! 😂
Very nice build and well done. I have a question though. Your end pieces have your dovetails going with the grain. Any risk/fear of breakage with the grain? Normally I see dovetails end grain to end grain. Thanks for the video.
Good eye! I don’t expect there to be much stress on the corner joints! I was a little nervous during assembly though.
@@lastingbuild1373 Fair enough. When I first started I did a sliding dovetail with the grain... 6 times before I figured it out. Yours should hold fine with the base, etc.
I can smell the wood shavings...luck man!
Smells great and also good kindling!
Smells great and also good kindling!
What about wood expansion on the bottom?
Aw Jim. All that sweat equity to machine everything by hand you should have went with something better than poplar!!But this hand built must have given you a lot of satisfaction. I love the way your hand cut. Dovetails came out and the overall look and heft of the tool box itself. Also i love the soulful eyes of your sheep/poodle dog.
Good luck with the start of the log cabin build. I sense that you live in one if the northern states so probably the actual build will have to be delayed a couple of months. Assuming that just about the entire build would have to be done outside on actual job site due to the huge scale if the materials being handled I mean golly just look at the size of the tool box. Big tools. Big box. Big project
Thanks Michael! Poplar is soft but a joy to hand plane! I live in Tennessee so I should be able to get started fairly quick! Just gotta get some prep done first!
Hey Mate, love the video and the hand tools used. I want to make something similar, but I am concerned about the cross grain construction that you've got at the bottom of the box. Would the seasonal movement of the base pop the dovetails. Or place stress on the dovetails over the years?
That’s a good question! My toolbox has not had any issues so far! It mostly stays in my shop though!
Beautiful toolbox, thank you for sharing your build. A quick question from a new woodworker (not intended to be a snarky critique...) - Why handplane a board, then run it through the thickness planer?
Great question! I joint my boards by hand then plane a parallel surface using the power planer. I do not have a power jointer.
that would look better at my place Jim,Very nice job dovetails came out great.Where did you get your dovetail gauge or did you make it your self?
Thanks buddy! I got it at a garage sale actually
👍
Thanks Tim! Looking forward to seeing your log building!
Cool looking tote, what was the handle made from walnut? It looked a little big, what was its final dimension 1 1/2" to 2" round?
Moonwolf71 good guess! 1 1/2” diameter walnut.. I was afraid to go any smaller! The tools are heavy!
@@lastingbuild1373 can't wait to see your build, I'm making a tote for my tools but I'm still thinking it out I want it to be 3 teirs. But I promised mom a bread box first.
I made one of these in the 1970 s I cheated though no hand planes was used and I used a router and a jig for the dovetails, I also put a swivel in each end so the handle could be pushed over so access to the tool box was unrestricted, because I cheated it only took 5.5 hrs to finish
Plain by hand for an eternity, THEN, chuck it through an electric planer. 🤔👍🏻🏴🇬🇧
I love hand tools but I also appreciate technology!
Planing by hand will eliminate the high spots on a board that is twisted slightly, or cupped. Then the thicknesser finishes it so you have a nice board to work with.
Have you made a wooden toilet lol
No dimensions mentioned....
