Quick question on the construction adhesive. Is there a way to thin it? I heard Xylene does it. I also heard the type used for concrete doesn't expand as much. You're the expert on this stuff.
PL doesn't have a strong solvent odour, so I don't expect xylene would do the trick. I've never had a reason to thin it, so I couldn't say. Maybe liquid poly glue would work.
Amazing project!! , i purchased your Precision Router Lift plans, but where i live is hard to find good quality plywood. Can i make the lift with MDF or a similar material? Or should i use shop grade ply? Thank you
@@daveturnbull7221 I would say 1M is actually quite a lot, considering how this content is kinda niche (a lot of wood tool making) and the uploads aren't so frequent. While I love this content, I can understand why it's not more broadly popular
Very nice John. So nice to see "shop stuff" built with such attention to detail and esthetics . You were right when you said that if you are going to build it you might as well make it look good. I think that our hobby would attract more people if our shops reflected both esthetic and practical efforts.
He was at that years ago before he merged a few channels. Also...If it weren't for the algorithm screwing over the real YT Creators for years now I reckon I Build It would be pushing 2M...but well said and congrats John, still a great achievement.
Now that’s what I call a toolbox!!! My shop (garage)is so cold right now even construction adhesive would be a problem, and I use the space for food in winter so I don’t want to heat it. Minus 30 Celsius this week outside, so my shop temperature dropped to 2 degrees, usually stays around 10 Celsius. Great project again John !!!
John, this video popped up in my suggested videos, and I watched it (again). A couple days later, You Tube asked me what I thought of it. I gave it 5 Stars, and selected Enjoyable, Life-Changing, Inspiring, Informative, Useful, Calming, Heartwarming, and Other under the "Tell Us More" section. Not all of that is true, but some of us are pulling for you ;)
Really nice build. I appreciated the line in the build article "If you want to build one for yourself, and you definitely should because you deserve it..."
Just love your Channel. I'm in wood craft since I'm 5 years old Tru my Dad... Have my own wood shop now and you always helped me out with great ideas. Your never to old to learn something new. You're kinda like my Dad when he's explaining and teaching me.. Best regards Phill.. Greetings From Swizerland..
While your workshop related projects are good, the more furniture and design oriented projects, like this, are where you realy shine! I start to see a more distinct and personal dseign style in your projects. A lovely, lovely toolbox and a well made video packed with information and tips.
Always amazed, not just of the projects themselves, but how detailed your editing and voiceover explain so much in such a short time. That's an heirloom piece for sure.
John, this is one of my favourite things you have made. Your design for the drawer slides is great, and I think adds a ton to the overall asthetic. Kinda like how a dovetail is functional, but looks really cool as well.
A project like this shows off your precision skills. A whole lot of stuff that could go wrong. Very nicely designed and executed. All the self-designed clamps and jigs utilized are a testament to your creative genius and the bonus is to see them used.
So I decided to watch this build again and noticed that you have reached the 1M mark!!! CONGRATULATIONS 🎉 on this well deserved achievement!! It’s such a pleasure watching your designs, inventions and builds.
Wow, the box came out so beautiful! I love the walnut accents. The wooden drawer slides work very well, and to be honest, I like the whispering noise they make when opening and closing; very satisfying. Good work, John.
Thanks John for the content. Although I may never attempt such a build with my limited skills, I get a great deal of satisfaction watching your build videos.
It reminds me of the Craftsman tool box I have. I've always thought it would be nice to have one for the woodshop and here it is. I love it and can't wait to make my own along with a bottom cabinet to match for all my wood working tools. It will be much more enjoyable then just buying another box store toolbox. I think I will combine this with the larger tool chest you made and create my own large toolbox. Very nice work and very inspirational. Thank you sir for all the time you put in to your projects and videos so that we lesser mortals can aspire to your level of craftmanship.
I have been watching your videos for some time now, you do beautiful work. I hope to start working with wood and building soon. Glade you are so comfortable with the way you work with your tools, keep show all of the content of your videos.
We are dealing with one of our coldest winters on record in Texas. I was about to do a glue up last night and saw that the temp in the garage was 37F. I immediately thought of using construction adhesive, because of you John. Unfortunately I didn’t have any!
It makes sense building it from wood with the prices of the toolboxes in the store. The wood looks better and functions better than those cheap metal ones. The tablesaw looks to be functioning well. The shop full of functional tools, drawers and cabinets looks incredible. Must be a pleasure working there knowing you made it all yourself. Great stuff
Did someone say raffle ? My bad, wishful thinking . . . . what do you all think? Raffle? I think John will step UP . . . .he ROCKS . . . .Great build John you deserve points for your master craftsmanship, and your teaching is Point On . . . always learn from you John, thank you Oktim
Excellent, I think very few of the RUclips woodworkers could do as good of a job, not only building, but even designing it to begin with, maybe The Wood Whisperer but that's about it.
Great build John as always. Your projects are excellent. I love the tip on using screws during assembly then drilling and installing dowels after the glue dries.
Your chest of drawers is stunning. A very nice piece of fine woodworking. My brother and I are making a Roubo style bench from ash and black walnut. This chest would be a lovely addition to it. Also I'm probably quite late to the party but I congratulate you on 1M subscribers, well deserved John!
I recently made a toolchest, but I made the drawer slides in a different way. I cut them from HDPE cutting boards as if they were mating parts for a French cleat . They are 3/4" wide and drilled with counterunk holes for flathead screws. The beveled matching of the parts keeps the drawers from cocking and jamming in the carcass and the HDPE is quite slippery. They can be planed on the wider side (the side you when installed) to adjust the tightness of fit.
If I would've built this toolbox, I'd be proud of it and look at it and run my hands over it all the time. You're not a maker, not a builder, not a woodworker, but a true craftsman.
I was thinking as I was watching the video that when I get the plans and build this that it's going to push my skills. Then I thought how you came up with this from scratch and was just very impressed. Another nice box.

Always impressed with homemade drawer slides. Looks great!
Ash is such a beautiful wood. Works well with tools and stains great if you need to go that route. Great build, John.
Gotta love a fine piece of ash :)

I'm really impressed as usual John. Especially when I see all your selfmade tools, clamps, tablesaw, router table, cabinets....
Bravo!
Right? I was blown away by the clamps, until I saw his table saw sled with micro adjustments 😳

I can't believe how much I've learned from watching just this one video! Brilliant! Thank you John! 👍
Good choice using ash. Tough as nails that stuff. The walnut sets it off nicely. Beauty box you ended up with.

That is a proper tool box, love the look of the ash in this one. I think anyone who had this in their work shop would be envied by everyone else
