    Just brought home our Yoder comp 640 pellet smoker. Traveled round trip approximately 600 miles to find a dealer. He had the shortest wait time From order to delivery which was roughly 2 months. Supposed to in nearly two weeks ago but not his fault due to the quality of this smoker and back orders for the Yoder. Now to find a way unload it from our Truck! Your video was very informative and thorough. Exhausted now but looking forward to learning more in the next few days. Thanks again Randy!

      I am very lucky to now have a local dealer that almost always has Yoders in stock. South Texas Outdoor Kitchens in McAllen and San Juan, Texas. Congratulations on your new smoker and let us know how it works out for you. I just cooked some chicken and sausage on mine tonight. Thanks for watching.

    I purchased my YS480 last wk. - this thing is a tank! The controller maintains a constant "target" temp. with minimal swings. Smoked a brisket and meatloaf - both amazing! I LOVE MY YODER SMOKER!

    I just wanted to stop by once again and say thanks for the video randy. i just placed my order for a yoder ys640! I should have it here in the next 4 weeks hopefully, well thats what my dealer is hoping for! Mine is going to look a lot like yours besides only have one temp thermometer on the lid. I went with only one because if i decided to get the thermo cover it only has a hole for one temp on top and living here in idaho ill prob need to get that if i want to smoke in the winter to save on pellets! i wanted a black cart but my wife likes silver better and you know how that goes haha...

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  8 лет назад

      I am sure you will love it. Th wife is always right. Right? lol. I dont watch the lid temps much anymore so I dont think you will miss having the dual lid thermometers. I do highly recommend having temp ports for remote probes. I use those often with up to two probes per port. Write me later and let me know how you like the new Yoder when it comes in.

    I am getting ready to outfit an outdoor kitchen that I am building and want to have my grill/cooker built in. I am torn between the Yoder and a BGE. I LOVE lots of smoke flavor and since the pellets burn so cleanly, will I get enough smoke from the Yoder. I guess an option would be to buy/make a smoke tube and lay it under the deflector for supplemental smoke.....thanks.

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  8 лет назад

      Great question. A smoke tube will help. The Yoder is wonderful because it is so easy to start, however if you like LOTS of natural smoke flavor the BGE or other ceramic will probably serve you better. I use a Primo XL when I am not cooking on the Yoder. I hope that helps a little.

    thanks for the video man! awesome video! hows pellet consumption compared to your previous smokers? The only issue I see with the smoker is that there is no way to change out your pellets unless you scoop or vacuum them out from the looks of it. Im excited to hear your experiences with the cooking once you really break it in!

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  8 лет назад

      +tonybuddy123 Tony, you are right about the pellet removal. I have been trying to just add a few at a time to keep the level pretty low at the end of the cook then just scooping out if I want to change pellet type. The auger is so short that if you scoop the hopper empty, you will burn most or all of what is in the auger during the next start up. I haven't measured the burn rate, but can tell you it is higher than either of my Traegers. I will take that trade out though for the increased temp stability I have seen so far. If you let it warm up right and don't chase temps with the controller, but let is just run for a while after temp changes, the stability seems to be within 20 degrees up or down as it adjusts. My Traeger would swing over 100 degree ranges. Thanks for watching.

      +tonybuddy123 I just got a small shop vac. (actually got two, H.D. had them on sale) and one is used just for pellets, just suck them up and pour into their respective 5 gallon bucket. The other one is handy for sucking up ash in and around the fire box.

    • @granttabor1338
      @granttabor1338 8 лет назад

      +Rashley's BorderQue Supprised you see that big of a swing in temps. I never go more than 5 to 10 (at the very outside). I always start up with the burn pot full of pellets so I get a good hot fire right off the bat.

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  8 лет назад

      +Grant Tabor good tip. I have a small pot that I use to dip out pellets when I change flavors. Just takes a minute. I have several of the Lowes buckets with lids for storing the removed pellets.

    Was wondering if you wouldn't mind answering a few questions about your smoker. Thinking of picking one up myself but nearest dealer is 180 miles away.
    1. How does this smoker fair for metal quality? Is it constructed of a thicker metal or thin sheets? (my current smoker has thin weak sheeting. I can even hear it expand/contract as the smoker heats up, comparable to a pos bbq you get from costco/sams club)
    2. How well does the smoker keep smoke in? Does it seep out through the cracks/welds/etc?
    3. What is the pellet usage like on that type of firebox? How much pellet do you use per hour? 12hour?
    I appreciate your time and thank you for the quality video!

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  8 лет назад +1

      +Ugsquish The Yoder smoker is made from much thicker metal than the Traeger which is the only one I can compare it to, as I own both. It retains smoke well without a lot of leakage around the door. The Yoder does have a higher pellet consumption rate than my Traeger. On the Traeger I use about 1lb. per hour at 225 to 250ish. On the Yoder I estimate closer to 1.5 lbs. per hour in the same temp range. I get a much steadier temp in the Yoder than I do in the Traeger. To answer you question directly, in a 12 hour run at 225 I use about 18 to 20 pounds of pellets on the Yoder. This is just an estimate as I have never actually weighed them, but I know that if I put in a full 20 pound bag, I usually need to refill at around 11 to 13 hours depending on outside air temps, wind, etc. I hope that helps some.

    The grill grates need to be installed in place of the other grates and not on top. The door will not close this way, but then maybe that was the idea to use with door open. Also the grill grates can be flipped over for a smooth surface for fish or burgers etc. Nice video... thanks

    • @RashleysBorderQue

      +Mike Lee This was just to show the grates and not a how to, but you add a very helpful point. Thanks for sharing that Mike. I have read about flipping the grates to make a semi griddle, but have not tried it yet. Thanks again for pointing the grill grate use out to those who might try it without removing the original grates.

    what made you get the yoder YS640 compar to the other wood pellet grills?

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  7 лет назад +4

      The Yoder is made in the USA. Yoder is made of substantially thicker metal than most or all others. Yoder customer service is beyond incredible. Yoder has a local dealer that I can turn to when needed. Yoder has excellent high temp grilling capabilities for searing. Yoder is made in the USA. Did I mention that Yoder is made in the USA? LOL I also have 2 Traeger grills and like them too. I can't directly compare to other brands, as I have not used them. I didn't like the handles on the Rec Tec. I know sounds lame, but it just was a deal breaker for me. Most of the others are new comers to the pellet grill arena and I just haven't had the opportunity to see or use them in person. Hours of online research and scouring the forums found complaints on all the grills of some kind or other. After weighing all the options and comparing negative comments across the board, I found Yoder came out on top. I have had two interactions with their customer service and both were top notch. Hope that helps some.

    Hi sir, Are you still enjoying your Yoder? What cons would you say this smoker has?
    Also- would you pick the Yoder over a Treager Texan elite 34?
    Thank you!
    Chad

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks for watching. That choice is very much a personal thing. If I had to choose, I would choose the Yoder over the Traeger because of the thickness of metal, MADE IN USA, customer service, etc. I love my Yoder. CONs? I believe it should come standard with the 2 piece heat deflector, I don't like the lid thermometers which never read the true pit temp, and wish it was powder coated instead of painted. Thats about it. Now in reality I have both a Yoder and Treager. I like the Traeger for quick cooks when I don't have 30 to 40 minutes for he Yoder to warm up. The Yoder gives better sear capabilities with the 2 piece deflector and grill grates and on the opposite end of the spectrum, it maintains low temperatures for adding smoke better than my Traeger. The Traeger warms quickly and uses less pellets at a similar temp and time. My Traeger still has no rust on the outside at 2 years old and the Yoder has flaking paint and rust around the door area at 1 1/2 years old. As the Yoder uses paint, repair of the finish is easier, but I feel if it was powder coated, it wouldn't have rusted to begin with. Still if I had to choose just one, it would be the Yoder. Of course that is just my choice and ultimately everyone has to weigh the pros and cons and make their own choice.

    Looking to see if you still feel the dual thermometers are worth it? Do you find yourself using them often to adjust cooking temps? Any major differences between the left and right side while cooking? If so, do you use the damper to adjust? I just ordered a 640 and debating what additional accessories I want to order. Great video. Thanks

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  2 года назад

      Hi Jeff. I no longer own this grill. I removed both lid thermometers a couple of months after setting it up and never used them again. I found that the grate temps and lid temps were more than 50 degrees apart at times and the lid thermometers were useless to me. I would no recommend purchasing the lid thermometers and would invest that money in a good remote thermometer with a grate probe and a few meat probes. Hope that helps. As for damper I found a position that gave me pretty even grate temps across the whole pit and never moved it again. Not even when searing over the fire pit. It's a good pit but I got a deal I couldn't refuse and sold it.

    Where have you found the best position of your baffle for even temps. Stack side of mine consistently 20+ degrees hotter.

    • @RashleysBorderQue
      @RashleysBorderQue  6 лет назад

      I set mine at the factory manual suggested setting and as time has gone by I have quit watching temps across the grill. I used to have dual lid thermometers and finally pulled them out as they never agreed with grate temps. Some offset smokers have a 75 to 100 degree difference across the grates. I have just quit watching temps that close and swap ends with the meat about half way through the cook if I feel it is needed. The more I played with baffle settings, the more frustrating it became until I put it back to factory setting and said do what your gonna do. Hey Sean, thanks for watching and for the question.

      +Je P I agree that they don't represent what is happening at the grate or upper shelf level. I have been running 4 remote probes on the grates and shelfs to get a picture of what is happening in the critical zones. I finally got my damper adjusted where the temps left to right are pretty even, and find the right side door thermometer is pretty close to the upper shelf temp, but the left door thermometer runs about 30 degrees lower than the shelf. Just keep in mind that they represent what is happening inside, but not the exact temps. For instance you can tell if temps are rising or falling, but need to remember the temp differential between door and grate. If I had it to do over again I would not order the door thermometers since I run the tappecue remote temp device with 4 probes. I usually run one in the meat and at least two at the grate surrounding the meat to get a good picture left and right of the meat at grate level. Hope that helps some. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      +Rashley's BorderQue Well did you get a chance to measure, and how did your cook go? When will the video be posted? Thanks

      +Je P I did, If you put a tape measure against the side of the pit and measure out to the tip of the handle, it measured 8 1/4 inches. I taped my brisket cook this weekend and will try to process it tonight. Hopefully will be posted tonight or tomorrow morning.

      Paint is the ONLY issue I have had with my Yoder. I love it and the paint issue doesn't bother me. I plan to clean it up and repaint it soon. Cook wise it has been a dream to use. Good luck and hope you get one soon. Thanks for watching.

    Can you use any type of wood pellets

      Thanks for the question. Yes, but any type of quality pellet. I have used Traeger, BBQers Delight, and Lumberjack pellets in my YS640 without issue. My favorite from a flavor, and quality perspective is Lumberjack. They have less sawdust in the bottom of the bag, good pellet compression, excellent flavor, and they offer pellets in 100 percent of the flavor. Most manufacturers label a pellet, "Mesquite" or "Hickory", as examples, when in reality it is 70 percent filler wood and only 30 percent of the flavor you are buying. Just my 2 cents worth which with an extra 2 dollars will buy you a cup of coffee. Seriously though, since going to Lumberjack I have not used any other pellets in my 640.

      Let me clarify my response below by saying any type of pellet designed for cooking. Heating pellets may contain ingredients that you wouldn't want to cook with.
