Except it's not true. It's false. People don't of Bass Reeves as the insiration for the Lone Ranger because the people who created the Lone Ranger (for children's radio in 1933) wouldn't have had any way to know about Reeves. The Lone Ranger was made by combining elements of heroes from early motion pictures of the 20s and 30s. The correct question to ask is, ''Why was Bass Reeves virtually unknown before the 2000s when figures like Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp were made into popular entertainment back in the 1950s?'' Then the answer would be, ''Because he's black.'' That's enough of a story. It shouldn't need to be embellished with made up claims about the origin of the Lone Ranger character.
Despite accounting for only about 12% of the population of the US, black Americans accounted for up to 25% of cowboys! The cattlemen, outlaws, settlers, and ranchers of the US has always been the tradition of minorities in America. It was a tradition started by Hispanics and spread to the white and black alike
This guy was seriously amazing. I remember reading a book about him in middle school. Apparently, one night after he had captured some men and put them in a jail cart (a wagon with bars, basically) he went to sleep. In the night a skunk walked by and the bad guys threw rocks at it to get it to spray Reeves. Instead, Reeves woke up and pet the skunk. Not kidding. This was in library book. This man was legendary.
The job Reeves took on was dangerous. The US Marshall Service states "Line of Duty Deaths Prevalent in Old West" "Dangerous duty" One example is "1885, Deputy Marshal Jim Guy, along with possemen Bill Kirksey, Andy Roff and James Roff, were killed in Delaware Bend. Indian Territory, in a shoot-out with the Pink-Lee Gang;" (Bass Reeves worked in Indian Territory where the worst outlaws tried to escape to)

Beautiful.... Thank you for the knowledge of this Black Man. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the entire staff for putting this together, plus making it comical to absorb. The ending..... With him.. drunk on the floor, looking up, eyes closed, one hand holding the cheek to the host and answering the last question of this video......."Because he was black." I don't touch people, but when I'm drunk, I love everybody and just want to sleep. That's why I don't drink too much, because then all I care about his going home and getting in bed to sleep lol.
I'm very pleased they mentioned that The Lone Ranger was based off of Bass Reeves.I watched a cool documentary on him a few years back, and this guy was beyond awesome.I'm not usually too interested in stories about folks who were US Marshals in this time period, but this particular man's life story is phenomenal.Being taught how to track by the Lakotas,is a brilliant talent when you're hunting down outlaws.
I’ve missed this series, this one in specific... I watched a couple two years back during a summer vacation airport delay looking through my subscriptions from the Comedy Central channel but never saw them again afterwards maybe once or twice...yet I still kept thinking of this one and brought it up when remotely relevant in small conversations but was recently reminded of them to a full extent when seen on Hulu... so for my respect for the shows sake I’m gonna try to return to this series.
I can be that kind of drunk just depends on the situation. Especially around old friends and people I have lots of respect & admiration for. I just can't help it. I had to quit drinking in my late 20s for awhile because I had been in and out of a lot of relationships in my early 20s as I explored the dating game. I got married the year I turned 26 and would revert in my mind to single mode when I drank! Gah! So I took a break from it until I knew I could control that part of myself. Though drinking always turns me into a flirt. I can also be kinda scary if I get drunk on Whiskey, it makes me a mean drunk!
I'm a helper drunk. Someone wants to talk for hours, laugh, cry, whatever? Here I am. You just want a bit of a cuddle, well alright! I also love to tell stories, and long jokes. Basically, I just want everyone to be happy.
Wait, I also love to cook meals. When friends come to my home I'm a big fan of feeding people and making everyone comfortable. At the end of the night I also tend to give my friends a comfortable place to sleep with pillows and blankets.
@Zedic Black Documents and the historical evidence shows the creators of The Lone Ranger copied the traits of Robin Hood, Zorro and Tom Mix. There is nothing to indicate the creators even knew the existence Bass Reeves.
@Zedic Black The sourced material is right there in the article. I figured you wouldn't bother to read it no matter how many times you asked. I'll give you a hint. There was NO public knowledge of Bass Reeves until decades after the Lone Ranger was created. Oh, and your race card is expired.
I’ve read this comment the most: I’ve never heard of (insert name/war/historical action) before. Well as a history teacher we only have so much time to fill in the information that the state has mandated for us. So some things just aren’t able to be covered. But in my class room we talk about Bass Reeves, but I’m from a town in Oklahoma where he served, so he is part of the local history. There are so many historical people and situations I wish I had time to teach.

@@TheRepty818 Well, those movies certainly weren't your traditional westerns. They seemed to be long on gore and horror. The recent Kurt Russell films didn't cost much to make, but they didn't make a lot of money either at the box office. Westerns are a big gamble these days.
Yes!!! God I wish I had cable. I love this series!

Dick Buttkiss Haha thanks! ;)
+Dick Buttkiss yay, thanks Dick!
They sell it on dvd too.
Actually now-a-days that's what supports a show more than ratings.
Beautiful.... Thank you for the knowledge of this Black Man. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the entire staff for putting this together, plus making it comical to absorb. The ending..... With him.. drunk on the floor, looking up, eyes closed, one hand holding the cheek to the host and answering the last question of this video......."Because he was black." The compassion in honesty of how it came out. Simply fabulous.

Heartwarming. My favorite drunk history by FAR
I fucking love this series. I hope it never stops
The funeral scene makes me cry. Can we pay our respects to this man? 😔 ❤
He was also the inspiration for the character Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.
I died at 😂😂🤣🤣"Listen motherfuker I'll tell you this whole story hold on"
One of the best Drunk HIstory's in a long time I'm still laughing
I love how the guy playing Bass Reeves, stops & looks at the camera! Halarious! This show Rocks!
I don't touch people, but when I'm drunk, I love everybody and just want to sleep.
" i wanna touch your face" LOL
I’ve missed this series, this one in specific... I watched a couple two years back during a summer vacation airport delay looking through my subscriptions from the Comedy Central channel
but never saw them again afterwards maybe once or twice...yet I still kept thinking of this one and brought it up when remotely relevant in small conversations but was recently reminded of them to a full extent when seen on Hulu... so for my respect for the shows sake I’m gonna try to return to this series.
this is actually me when im drunk: tired and wanting to touch and kiss everyone
Ellis let's date!
Same lol I can't help but express my undying love for eveyone
Drunk history making history once again by telling the iconic story of Bass Reeves, a man I've found to be an inspiration for most of my life

I had no idea that the Lone Ranger was based on Bass Reeves. These DH segments are so good!!!!💖💕
He wasn't.
@Zedic Black Documents and the historical evidence shows the creators of The Lone Ranger copied the traits of Robin Hood, Zorro and Tom Mix. There is nothing to indicate the creators even knew the existence Bass Reeves.
@Zedic Black I hope this link works for you. docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/41b57b_65fd2f2e944846ddbfa937d8449a43cf.pdf
@Zedic Black Bass Reeves and the Lone Ranger: Debunking the Myth. If that doesn't work, the PDF source is on WikiPedia under the Lone Ranger.
@Zedic Black The sourced material is right there in the article. I figured you wouldn't bother to read it no matter how many times you asked. I'll give you a hint. There was NO public knowledge of Bass Reeves until decades after the Lone Ranger was created. Oh, and your race card is expired.
That was the cutest fucking drunken bro love I've ever seen dear god it looked like two children having a sleepover
Good research, Drunk History! I knew about Bass Reeves before seeing this. The Lone Ranger is definitely based on Bass Reeves. What a hero!
Mark Gagliardi + Derek Waters = OTP
this is hands down the best one
White,Black, Native American and whatever the other thing was 😂. Such a funny show
I’ve read this comment the most: I’ve never heard of (insert name/war/historical action) before.
