I used to play at a hobby shop about 5 years ago and gave it up and relinquished my card to my younger brother.. now im just a video away from heading down and starting up a brand new deck.. IMO these cards are beautiful to just even collect let alone how much fun the game itself is. A work of art this game is and the cards.
best thing to do is go and watch the highlights. they show larger pictures of the cards and explain the action step by step. they do leave out certain sections of combat and such but it's a great way to learn about the game and learn what crazy old-school cards do. "Show and Tell" is friggin ridiculous.
These are watched by the usual community of Magic players. If you've been playing long enough, you already know what the cards do and you know who they are even by a slightly blurry on-screen view. Which is what these tournaments appeal to.
true words. i have allways followed magic, but never really started playing it, because i felt to dumb and my friends allways told me its nothing for me(they are hardcore magic gamers) now i tried it out for 4 months and i love it and have so much fun.
The lands with the art on most of the card are from Unglued, a parody set that happened to have tournament legal basic lands that looked like that. Unhinged, (unglued 2) and Zendikar also had full-art basic land.
i didn't know this game had this kind of tournaments, i used to play this in highschool but it didn't go further than that... the concentration of these kids is just heavier than the poker players...
for everyone thinking that they made a life count mistake - he pays the last punishing fire with burnwillows(life giving land) so japanesse is not at 2 but he gains +1 so 3. And at the end, even if he cracks fetch he is still one mana short to kill him. thats magic.
At 1:00:57 why did Bjornerud punishing fire Mihara's face again? Mihara just used spellskite on it (its offscreen but if you check before he only had 5 lands tapped, and after he had 6, plus the life total didn't change). If I did my math correctly, he could have finished Mihara off the next turn if he didn't need to use grove again (although I suppose he couldn't predict the pridemage he drew, but still the punishing fire did nothing)
@JamieDelo Norway messed up though, he had the mana to double punishing fire the spellskite at the end of japan's turn, killing off the spellskite, and then on his own turn having the Fire for removal or to win.
anyone know what kinda card sleeves most of these players use, if there is a more commonly used brand? they seem to shuffle so easily and look pretty good
@TooningWithPete Funny, mr. RUclips commenter. Perhaps if you had followed more closely, you would have noticed that one of the Punishing Fires were removed by Relic of Progenitus? I know we misplayed at the end, though. I knew it right away. I think you can hear us saying in Norwegian that we threw the game, in fact. I posted a report on MtG Salvation (The Game -> Modern -> Established -> Zoo -> Worlds '11 tournament report - the modern part) if you want to read...
at 1:00:33 he uses punishing fire and goes to 2 then activates the land to take it back and goes to 3. after at 1:01:01 uses again the land he goes to 4 and shoots him but he goes again to 3 why?wasnt he supposed to go to 2 and Norway win?
i love playing magic but im new and i have no idea whats going on here,, please make them more noobie friendly by explaining or showing the cards so we can follow along
@lMaBanana on Bjornerud's turn, plains forest forest to pridemage the spellskite, then foundry + burnwillow's (for colorless) to punishing fire, Mihara's at one. burnwillows to return pf, the sacred foundry + mountain --> pf for the win. even if he didn't know he'd draw removal, he would lose on Mihara's next turn, so might as well assume so and try to play :P
@fashobro88 Wow, this is a bad idea. They always name the non-land cards that are being played, and the majority of people watching already know what they do. Having to hear it repeatedly would be incredibly irritating. Pause the video and use google if you can't follow along.
You can't hope to sit there and explain every card for each match in a legacy format tournament. There are just way too many cards being played here -_- Your best bet is to just google.
Was the legacy player for norway running Natural Order? If yes he should have at least waited to see if he topdecked it to legend rule Progen. Swing in, kill Jace, Reset the game with a better field.
@itwasamaazing waiting for your opponent to make a move can often be both stressful and frustrating .. shuffling the cards give you something to do .. and then soon enough it becomes force of habit.. you cant stop!
well dont shun new players but he also should realize that the commentators are not here broadcasting to new players, its the finals and they assume its not new players that would be watching. Just dont call them terrible commentators.
wow 3 people and they still don't realize that ONE burnwillow activation triggers BOTH punishing fires, he had the win for sooo long on board... facepalm
@emangamer1 I thought he did. If he poped the fetch land. But maybe the Japaneses guy would burn him in response? That's all I can think... I thought he had it if he poped misty rain forest
He totally misplays at the end. If he tapped the grove for red to activate the pridemage, he gets the fire back and mihara goes to 4. Then he has enough mana on the board to fire three times for the win. There was no other good play. Either mihara would have an answer for the last fire or not and it was obvious that this was his last turn.
When you play in enough tournaments like these guys do, and even grind MTGO like these guys do you'll know. Even in my local commander meta I know 90% of what my friends' cards are because we meet up once a week to play.
@@Turn2Ugin I mean considering we haven’t been able to play in a year with a lot of new stuff I cant really tell you how much better it is because MTGO commander is a trash way to see how good commander is

I lost my control and beat him up, he got banned, I just got a warning because the owner saw what happened before I started attacking him...and it left me with a bad taste for Magic.

@bibojeska on of the lands tapped was cascade bluffs which filters the U into RR....
depends which sleeves you use. you can buy the cheapest card sleeves for about $3 for 100, all the way to dragon sleeves for $10 per 100 sleeves.
@Sene7363 The missplay was playing the PF which was redirected to spellskite?

is that poker pro david williams at 0:20?
what was the legacy norwegian doing for the whole time the japanese guy was watching the modern game?
anyone know what kinda card sleeves most of these players use, if there is a more commonly used brand? they seem to shuffle so easily and look pretty good
Where do they get the pads to record their games? Also, what notation are they using?
@Blazblue101 They're teams of 3. They play 3 1v1 games. One Standard, One Modern, and one Legacy.
did the norwegian player took the japanese player's punishing fire
?
What are those sweet land cards?

Please...what card he used to play progenitus? in first game
does FNM also support the Legacy format?
"Progenitus has, protection from everything" haha that was so good! x)
Do they have translators for players who don't know the other teams language
@bibojeska one of the island's mana went into the Cascade Bluffs for RR.
i belive they use the Deck Protector Sleeves they come in all colors
there are about 8$ per 100 (or 6$ can't remeber) there quite good to have
@Lazris59 If he had popped the fetch in response he would have won. Japan only had one punishing fire right?
What's the name of the card with the birds(?) that Nordahl has?
Swords to plowshares
i always watch magic the gathering tournaments, it helps me fall asleep
@nox0underling no he was playing maverick
I do agree with not dissing new players, but formats with so many cards like legacy or even modern are really hard to explain sometimes
I don't get it. Why didn't Bjornerud win the last game when he could have punishing fire twice FTW??
is this extended or modern?
Would love to be able to hear the players talk aswell. Imo more interesting than the commentators at times.
I'm assuming that part of the idea here is that the viewer already knows a good amount about the cards and decks.
how does this team format work?
What would the winners win
at 1:00:33 he uses punishing fire and goes to 2 then activates the land to take it back and goes to 3. after at 1:01:01 uses again the land he goes to 4 and shoots him but he goes again to 3 why?wasnt he supposed to go to 2 and Norway win?

@ stephenkingrules I think you mean Birds of Paradise.
@MTGasm haha .. im not ashamed of it at all .. if something can calm me down so I don't go on tilt .. I say its a good thing to do.
show and tell, it's fair as hell you both get to show something!
Sveinung Bjornerud (Middle Norwegian) totally reminds me of Naniwa.
It's called a mulligan. If you don't like the cards you just drew you can shuffle your hand into the library and draw the same amount minus 1.
My pleasure :)

Why did Sveinung pass? By my count he had enough to kill MIhara
My question is how do these people play so loose and get into these events
i see a question over there ....yeah I WANNA KNOW HOW TO PLAY ?
@wgc3broken i think that's the new Liliana
@bibojeska Look closely. He has a Cascade Bluffs which gives him 2 red mana.
He isn't wrong, I'm new and every time they say "he played so and so" I'm like "yeah.... what?".
richard hagon sound like dr house....?
How many cards do they have in one deck here?

What was the comment?
why do all of these players shuffle their cards that are in their hand? why cant they just look at them?
Was the legacy player for norway running Natural Order? If yes he should have at least waited to see if he topdecked it to legend rule Progen. Swing in, kill Jace, Reset the game with a better field.
@fashobro88 They're commentating the game not explaining how to play it.
are you my long lost brother

There can't be a 3-0 sweep. Once a team wins two, there's no need to play the third match.
HARDCORE MAGIC NERDS FTW!
there was a misty rain forest there, to get a land he would had to deal himself that 1 point your talking about :D
well dont shun new players but he also should realize that the commentators are not here broadcasting to new players, its the finals and they assume its not new players that would be watching. Just dont call them terrible commentators.
This is so sad. In response to the japanese players punishing fire, he could have used his and then brought it back and casted it again
@paklinlam Both players were using punishing fires, he probably thought it was his one.
@Allanq69 thats awesome, didnt notice that
@Allanq69 you won, i have your fire whats the problem ??
he wants a trofey too :D
Longest Ponder ever - 2:45
well, geth's verdict targets a player, not the creature. it's kind of like a kicked gatekeeper of malakir.
Is it fair to say that every high-level Magic player has severe OCD?
Elesh Norn… Bah I literaly am dying
wow 3 people and they still don't realize that ONE burnwillow activation triggers BOTH punishing fires, he had the win for sooo long on board... facepalm

cool, ill watch it later.. japan is back i see :)
@zuzu1025 : Tribute to Hunger would be better
Jesus. Why the hostility, doc?

@jsdragon23 These are high-stakes games lol playing in your basement with your friends is different than playing at a pro tour
Hell, it hasn't even started playing. o_O
@34:11 The Japanese guy in the back is thinking, "Why am I stuck with these 5 scrubs?"
Is it just me or did he have enough to punishing fire him for the win?
I was really rooting for Norway
It was fun while it lasted, I'm more thankful for BBE leaving the game.
How the f do they know all there effects
no offence to you but i love when i see these posts on high level magic :)

So, howcome his Jace and Show and Tell cost 1 less?
Show and Tell
You can find deck lists on mtgdecks usually.
no cat zoo: mtgdecks.net/decks/view/22239
show and tell: mtgdecks.net/decks/view/22236
@togethegutlesss i think that too, cos i dont have any real MTG cards
Is it me or the Norwegian at 1:04:20 takes the Japanese punishing fire thinking it was his??? LOL
@monkiflip15 agreed
Ahh, i still like the galgori deck
yep.i'm insane. and i'm the king of the NEW WORLD!!!
@jsdragon23 now* and you're*
