It doesn't matter how antisocial, misanthropic, or contrarian a movement is when it begins - someone is guaranteed to commercialize it and dilute whatever original message and aesthetic it once possessed.
I actually got to watch the downfall of the norwegian metal scene first hand as I am actually Norwegian. What happened was what has happenes to many music scenes. It got big, that attracted the posers who were in it for the money, not the music, they got bigger than the bands with actual talent, and the whole thing implodes in on itself.
The trigger was the murder case against Varg, along with the various church burnings, which made national news, got those involved in the scene a lot of attention, and started making them money. People realized that shock sold better than music, and so the leaders of the scene became not those who were great artist, but those who were great publicists. What people saw were burning bibles, pigs heads tossed out into the audience, showers of blood, lots of goofy satanic imagery and a bunch of guys having a pissing contest of "evilness". The scene never really recovered after that I guess.
you needed to live in norway to realize that?
Magnus Sandvik no.
This is proof that no matter what country you're from or genre of music you like, hipsters and posers ruin it when it gets popular. I saw this happen in Canada in the late 90's with nu metal, pop punk, and even hip hop. Metal and punk have recovered somewhat because hipsters and posers can never really embrace music genres that are anti-establishment to their core. Hip hop, however.... sells out still when the glorification of money is a genre's mainstream lyrical content
Azazel Acheron lol no? Have you watched Lords of Chaos since you have this opinion? Literally no one cared about Euro’s death. That might be because he sent death threats to everybody including Varg. And he supposedly also heard the deaththreats directly from Euro.
@Azazel Acheron Nazi's don't exist anymore. You probably meant Neo-Nazi, which Varg is not.
It’s crazy how many albums they’ve released since this video.
right?
Not really. Same amount they released in the 8 years prior to the video.
Would be incredibly nice to see updated episodes of this
The new ones are pretty good too

WHY, exactly, is it pretentious for a norwegian to, um, write lyrics in norwegian?
Because the music they are making did not originate there. Hence why Bathory, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer all these bands were in English. Saying you can only make black metal if its Norwegian is quite pretentious however.
Obviously you choosing to write it in Norwegian because you want to is something else. I for that matter fully embrace the idea of bands writing it in their own language, wether that is Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, German, French etc. I wouldn't care less.
based huuttis most music came from Africa? Is that where sound originates? How about the Sky? How about air? Does air come from Africa?
@@OaksArmorial The dude is smoking some heavy shit.
@based huuttis Do you have any evidence to support that?
@@dalazo there's also the fact that bands like Darkthrone and Burzum were part of "true Norwegian black metal" so it makes sense to me that they'd have lyrics in Norwegian.
I can't wait for Darkthrone's next dubstep album.
You say that but Fenriz is actually a techno DJ at a Norwegian nightclub so wouldn't be too far fetched.
He said that he would never incorporate EDM into Darkthrone because that's not what the Darkthrone project is about
Techno is vastly different from dubstep.
I wouldn't be suprised.
He plays at my local fav bar. Finest minimal techno. I am 46, I love both metal and techno, I was there..back then ;)

i highly disagree his opinion about ToK being unoriginal or shit, it's my fav band for many reasons, their riffs arent the same overused chord progressions every other bm band uses/steals that you've definitely heard a dozen of times already. their riffs are evil as fuck, original (i mean it) i've never gone a day without listening to them since i discovered them, great acoustic guitars on first 2 albums, their blast beats weren't made up in 5 minutes and they play with varied cymbal hits, infamroth has only done genuine screaming vocals and not those forced highs many other vocalists do, maybe he said it because their songs are long as fuck, apart from their ved graven album. but either infamroth or vardalv stated in a interview once they don't appreciate short songs with a quick blast and a couple of riffs, they described their 4th (last album) with the 3 long ass songs that they were to make you lose track of time. still surprised he even mentioned them, i stumbled across them from Farvanns top 10 favourite bm albums video.
"you see? big sunglasses, not emperor sunglasses, BIG SUNGLASSES"
best interview ever
Artic Thunder was pretty damn good.
It’s great
Agreed.
You criticize Burzum for ripping of Bathory but you don't even mention that half of Darkthrone's discography is just recycled Celtic Frost
brzum sucks tho
@Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls wait till you hear their new album. One song is just an AC/DC riff made with added strumming

To be honest, I never considered Soulside Journey as proper Darkthrone.
Your description of Transilvanian Hunger is absolutely perfect. This is my favourite Darkthrone album.
Great video man, could not disagree more with your assessment of the death metal genre, but to each their own.
I'll be completely honest; while I'm not a fan of Death- or Black Metal, and enjoy almost all the other bands you've covered on Music/Metal Mythos more (Queen, Motörhead, Judas Priest, Dokken, etc), this is probably my favorite Metal Mythos episode.
Why? Because it's such a fascinating dive into the history of what are clearly talented people abandoning what made them great (A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Circle the Wagons don't even sound like the same band to me), and what is clearly a fans disillusionment with the same band. Thank you, Razör', for this absolutely fascinating look into Darkthrone and their discography.
An updated take on the albums that have come out since this was made would be good. I feel like they really came back around in a great way. While the crust punk stuff was nice in its own right (though my least favorite of their eras), for me Arctic Thunder and Old Star marked a triumphant return to form. With Eternal Hails and Astral Fortress showcasing an even more fantastic growth towards a matured, old school sound. I feel like those two are the ones I end up spinning more than the rest these days. Really fucking with the cold caveman riffage lately.
Imo Under a Funeral Moon is the best album that Darkthrone have ever released. A Blaze used to be my favorite for a few years, but Under a Funeral Moon really grows on you after repeated listens. A masterpiece.. I also agree that Total Death is another great album in their discography. Probably my 2nd favorite as well. Highly underrated.
Transylvanian hunger won me over as a dark thrown fan. That song sounded like my soul. The part of my soul I can’t express verbally. Love that song. It’s So comforting.
Panzerfaust is my favorite BM album of all time. Quintessence is unironically the best Darkthrone track ever since I first heard it about 6 years ago.
Would have to agree with that not sure what it is but its just got a special air and coldness to it.
I'm not really into black metal (I love listening to Razor's passion for the genre and the story of the scene more than the music itself), and I love Quintessence
Quintessence is not a very black metal song
Quintessence is a banger. My favorite is Where Cold Winds Blow, that blast beat is insane.
Pretty harsh on death metal and dismissive of late 80 to early 90s classics. Entitled to your opinion but shit man missing out many classics
Second wave bm was a direct antagonistic response to late 80s/early 90s death metal honestly if people are dismissing top tier dm albums can you really blame them?
Its a shame that great bands like Death, Morbid Angel and Carcass are lumped into the same scene as mediocre at best bands like Deicide and Cannibal Corpse.
@@sole__doubt I think I left Individual Thought Patterns in my last car :(
Razör actually likes Morbid Angel and Death.
@@sole__doubt Deicide? Cannibal Corpse? Mediocre? What the fuck? Deicide has kinda sucked since 3rd album, but first 2, despite poor production, are some of the most amazing death metal albums, the riffs, the time signatures, the double growls, the drumming, duuuude. And Eaten Back to Life through Vile are filled with top notch hooks and some of the best bass playing in the OSDM scene (Addicted to the Vaginal Skin is a prime example).
I appreciate the fact you don't dumb your language down, you speak complexly and it makes you a lot easier to understand.
Your so biased towards burzum it's ridiculous. Its one thing to not like the music but calling it talentless and a bathory rip off is completely unfounded. The only song by Burzum that sounds like a Bathory rip off is war, and thats where it ends. I suspect you are biased because you dont like Varg as a person.
He doesn't like Yngqie Malmsteen as a person, but still gives him praise.
*against burzum
Hes also a self admited bathory fan boy. But it's all a matter of opinion.
Burzum IS black metal
Burzum is one of The best black metal "bands" to have ever existed. This dude is just very strong about his opinions as if they are 100% fact... No better than a Christian (no offense Christians 😂)
Please do one on Mayhem man! These videos are gold!
Mayhem couldn't get their act together to do more than 1 and a half albums in 7 years. What is there to talk about, in terms of pre-1996 output.
Ill take ring wraith over Cookie Monster any day.
Keoni Anderson same
Fuck yes. A Blaze in the Northern Sky is what got me into black metal.
+SacredBurn0ut Me too ;)
Darkthrone is phenomenal. Heavily Celtic Frost influenced among other greats in extreme metal. Their last 4 records are in my regular rotation. They’ve gotten more rock & roll and doom reminiscent as of late. Despite your disdain for Death Metal, my favorite genre, I deeply appreciate the well researched video. That’s fucking proper journalism. Well done.
Darkthrone IS Black Metal! Nothing surpassed their greatness.
1:57 thank you. I’ve just got into metal music and this is a great distinguish
Soulside Journey is one of the greatest - not to mention criminally underrated - DM albums of all time imo, and I was genuinely pissed when they transitioned to Black Metal.
To me, Transilvanian Hunger sounds like a reference to vampires.
Quite possible!! Vampires are classed as dark creatures in some cultures!!
Well Transylvania did have a history of vampires, right..? ;)
It's a reference to Mayhem vocalist Dead who had committed suicide while he happened to be wearing a shirt that said "I ❤ Transilvania" hence the unorthodox spelling.
@@josh_fisher No but they did have a ruler literally called Dracula who was so ruthless people used to say he'd dip his bread in blood.
@@lordtrigon1733 Actually his t-shirt said Transylvania so I guess it was a spelling mistake, who knows...
Quintessence is the main forerunner for the argument that you should listen to black metal with decent sound system or head phones if you are obsessed with music or guitar playing. Most covers play all the riffs in a robotic 4/4 downstroking way, but the song is literally full of alternative chord strummage and dwidleledees if you listen hard enough. Gives me joy everytime I find another derivation from the main formula of the song most people take it as intended.
I don't think Soulside Journey is weak at all
Hey !!
The Norwegian language is beautiful, and fits spectaculary with certain fantastic Black Metal songs !!
There's magnificent Black Metal albums consisting completely of songs in Norwegian, so good, in fact, that foreigners spanning the entire world love them without understanding a word, and actually pushes them to make the efford to learn the laguage !!
I agree. I started learning norwegian years ago because I wanted to understand the lyrics. As a german it is not THAT hard thoug, if you once get the point one can relate quite easily to many words. Very common example: "snakker" means "sprechen" in german, not that similar but in several regions in Germany people say "schnacken". The affinity is quite obvious.
If I may add: The funniest norwegian word is "Bløtkake" which is a certain type of cake. Written its completley different but when pronounced its german for "stupid shit" (=blöd Kacke)
I really appreciated this video.
As someone who back during this time was a high school freshman more into Korn, and since it doesn't fit my life outlook in any regard, I frankly have never known shit about black metal. And compared to you and most of the commenters I still don't.
However, this was a worthwhile educating experience...I look forward to more Mythos.

Shitting on Varg for plagiarism when sucking off Darkthrone. I love Darkthrone but Fenriz openly talks about where he got most of their riffs and sounds from, which funny enough includes heavy influences from Varg himself.
I am sure the only Burzum inspired riffs Fenriz has ever made was for the album Transilvanian Hunger, 2 songs on Panzerfaust and 1 riff on Total Death. Burzum is probably the biggest inspiration of modern Black Metal, but not Darkthrone..
Varg ripped off Bathory and Manes you hilarious gen-z shit.
It's one thing to be inspired by an artist and completely another to straight up copy an artist.
With the exception of maybe one or 2 albums i love all Darkthrone records in their own way, especially the last 5. But to each his own ofcourse. Love the episode anyway. Cheers.
I am wearing a DARKTHRONE shirt and watching this
Darkthrone mighty Darkthrone
It's not every day you see someone talking about Darkthrone while wearing an Yngwie Malmsteen t-shirt! Nice!!! Keep up the good work!!
I dunno - Fenriz himself has said that, especially the first album, Burzum essential defined the sound of Black Metal. I mean, damn - you may dislike him, but Varg was important to that scene and sound.
All these pansy crybabies get their panties in a bunch over the guy killing someone …. Who cares? The dude he wasted was a POS and he did his time .
None of that takes away his contributions to the genre
UNDER A FUNERAL MOON !!!! BEST BLACK METAL ALBUM EVER !
Idk, storm of the lights bane is pretty fuckin amazing
These are all very strange ways to spell Pentagram by Gorgoroth.
@@randpaul7031 Pentagram is a great album but is not in any way better than Darkthrone first 4 black metal albums.
For your info, as a norwegian i have met very few metalheads here. It sucks. They all spawn at maiden concerts or tons of rock, but otherwise they are hidden

I always thought metal was kind of dumb. And then I found black metal. Burzum is one of my favorites.
I'm sorry that you like Burzum.
@Caesar Nero you dont like Burzum
Bruh listen to Judas Priest at least and report back here (Painkiller álbum HIGHEST recommendation) their shit is the cool side of metal while bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem and Bathory are more atmospheric and dark. SO PURE, SO COLD, TRANSILVANIAN HUNGER!
I can't believe I never noticed the similarities in appearance between Fenriz and Spoony until you pointed it out.
Not a huge fan of death metal but bloodbath’s “Nightmare made flesh” is a must listen for any metal fan to hear what the genre can evoke
The rant about Fenriz (34:37) is actually pretty spot-on...I dig Fenriz for his dedication to keeping the underground and old school metal scene alive (Radio Fenriz podcasts more so than these homage-albums they release every 12 months) but his efforts materialize as little more then a schoolboy cowering in the corner from a bully...the bully here being his own damn work as a angst-filled teenager without enough balls and few enough fucks-given to record Darkthrone's strongest material. I admittedly liked Underground Resistance for awhile...not as a Darkthrone album, but as an easy-listen crust-punk-metal album despite some horrific vocal performances and recycled, lackluster guitar work. Come to think of it...why the fuck do I like Underground Resistance so much? Could really just be nostalgia for a band I adored so much growing up.....come out of the hole and start recording some real, original work again Fenriz.
Dude, I love your mythos series. Thanks for standing for some form of musical standard. Found you after you covered for Sargon, and damn am I glad you did.

Love these mythos videos man. But I don't know why you dislike Varg so much. He did not plagiarize Bathory, he was inspired by it, as was everyone else in the second wave. And you say Euronymous founded norwegian black metal? That may be so, but it was still first wave since the Deathcrush EP came out the same time as Sarcofago's I.N.R.I, plus I don't think Burzum sounds anything like Mayhem to be honest with you. Burzum is way more imaginative than Mayhem ever was, and it's ALSO a 'product of isolation'. Perhaps you will do a mythos on Burzum one day?
Abysmal Lord burzums greatest album was filosofem
War was a tribute to Bathory according to Varg.
To reference a statement Razor made on another video (sorry, I can't remember for the life of me which it was), he stated that a Burzum mythos would basically amount to saying "I like the first two albums, but the rest are shit.' Might have been livestream or Dear Rageaholic video where he stated that.
Bruno Rangel No, it was not. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, was and it is, not only Burzum's best album but Black Metal's second wave best album. Hands down.
@based huuttis Nazi or not, he's still a fucking murderer. Also the whole "Christianity sucks because it's too jewish." shit.

Get the fuck out, you're a troll.
Thing about Chuck Schuldiner that separates himself from many "black" metal bands is he was a badass guitar player.
I dont think Chuck was ever considered black metal by anyone at anytime. He was referenced in this video as the inspirational high or low water mark of DEATH metal that lead to the creation of black metal. Some thought he was too tech, they wanted to create a style going another way. I love Chuck and DEATH, have nothing but love and respect.
Black metal has better guitarists lmao
He isn’t black metal…..
@@lordnorthumberland277 Than Chuck? Hope you are kidding yourself.
He's not even close to Black Metal. He's considered one of the defining acts of death metal because he separated the genre from the broad extreme metal label
My opinion? Darkthrone is my favorite of the black metal elite. Cool video. Though, I respectfully disagree with your description of Death Metal... I mean.. Death's "Human"...or for that matter, any of their releases (aside from Scream Bloody Gore, which was a good start, but not a great album) come on bruh! so good.
Death is good, and Cannibal Corpse is at least self-aware.
People love to take extreme sides. They feel part of something to hate the other. Nothing we should not be used to by now.
Takes all types
@Conrad Rich it's not that I think it's bad, it actually is a great, savage death metal record, I won't debate that. But in terms of Death themselves and their entire catalog, and in terms of the direction Chuck took it, I'd say it's the lower point. Again, a great start, but not their best.
Thanks for clearing up some of my confusion on the various sub genres of metal. Awesome video as always. 👍
"It's just screaming". Whenever someone says that to me i roll my eyes especially if that person is a metalhead.
Extreme metal vocals are hard to perform and even harder to do without ruining your voice. If you're a metalhead and a non fan says "It's just screaming" then ask them if they can do it. I guarantee they won't be able to.
I don’t really have a dog in this fight, but why does it matter if it’s difficult or that someone else can’t do it? Saying “it’s just screaming” is derogatory, but coming back with “I bet you can’t!” doesn’t exactly address anything except to say they’re doing it on purpose. I can’t sing like Bruce Dickinson, but what does that have to do with me saying something about how he sings?
Rage that was the best explanation of the difference between dark and death metal!!!!
I would love to see this done with Testament.
I agree, Panzerfaust and Total Death were greatly overlooked and they were awesome albums and my favs!
Hey Razor, love the channel. What are your thoughts on the more recent Darkthrone albums like Arctic Thunder and Old Star? Godspeed \m/!
And Goatlord. You can call me silly but I kind of love its satanic charme and its crazy ideas. Its not the same class as the original 90s run until Total Death, but everybody should give that sucker a fair chance.
Most of the Norwegian scene started as death metal. "Deathcrush" is death metal, and Hellhammer played death metal drums throughout "De Mysteriis dom Sathanas." That shitty band Varg and the Immortal guys played in, Old Funeral, was death metal. Emperor dudes were also playing death metal at first.
Death metal is musical narrative constructed around rhythm whereas black metal is musical narrative constructed around melody. It has nothing to do with the vocals.
You seem to overlook Nocturno Culto's fantastic vocal flexibility. On all the seminal early albums, he had a different vocal approach that fit well with the musical aesthetics and ideas presented in each of the albums. This is so far removed from basically every other metal vocalist that it ought to be noticed by more people.
The Cookie Monster vs LOTR analogy was spot on 🤣🤣
I've always loved all kinds of metal but razorfist has been the one to introduce me to black metal through this review alone. Metal/music mythos are by far some of the best videos on RUclips. Looking forward to seeing more. God. Fucking. Speed!

Never listened to black metal (looks to my Eddie Van Halen profile picture) but I gotta say how much I appreciate how you can do bands like this to bands like Dokken and MJ in the same series.
Cheers to ya man, good info
Damn, it just got cold as fuck in here.
Love this and this channel
I’m sold..
Awww, how disappointing, that you're not a fan of death metal. Oh well. :)
Very entertaining when I take it all with a pinch of salt. Well done.
Well, you're bashing ambient black metal, dissing it as a hipster thing, while at the same time you harshly criticize modern day "trve" black metal, as well as Darkthrone's more light-hearted and crust punk-oriented stuff.
I get some of your points. I'm my humble opinion, if you're not in the right mindset, Fenriz's vocals may sound horrible, but if you're coming into those new albums with a sense of humor, you can appreciate them for how goofy they are. Same goes for their take on early 80's metal: it's intentionally goofy and trashy, and that's part of it's charm.
Same goes for your opinion on Burzum and Burzum-inspired Black Metal. I get where you're coming from and why you're annoyed by the pretentiousness of some of the musicians and fans of this kind of music. But as long as you don't think about the fanbase of these bands or how well received and hyped they are in websites like Pitchfork or /mu/, and focus solely on the music spouted by the "Ambient Black Metal" subgenre, you'll see it has a lot of interestin and innovative stuff. Bands like Wolves In The Throne Room, Agalloch, Krallice and Weakling should not be disregarded just because they are "hipster metal".
Seems to me that you want something very specific out of Black Metal. As if every band should sound like traditional Finnish BM.
Wait he disliked Wolves In The Throne Room and Agalloch?
Great point indeed.

@@CountBeetle Damn your mad.
Been rewatching this ep and the one about Gorgoroth and while I'm not a fan of black metal I can appreciate the skill of the musicianship being displayed.
A lot of people think that playing really fast is easy but to do it well and sound good takes way more skill than one thinks.
Also: some of Neptune Towers material made it into the first Sinister movie.
