    Keep a long rope on top of the canopy,if it snows a lot you can both walk on the containers and drag the rope along the canopy. It will take the snow off

    • @Dave--FkTheDeepstate
      @Dave--FkTheDeepstate 18 дней назад +2

      Liked, great idea!
      I've seen videos of that rope trick on sloped, house roofs before.
      Disclosure: I have spent almost zero time living in winter conditions like this. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
      1. If most of the snow from the canopy ends up on top of the cargo containers, it could quickly become hard to walk on it to pull the rope. So they may need a longer rope that'll reach the far sides of both shipping containers.
      2. I understand the strength of arches, but I'm a little concerned about the several thousands of pounds of snow that may eventually be resting on top of the canopy. I wouldn't want to be under there if the canopy collapses.
      3. Also, is it less likely for the snow to slide off this canopy, versus a sloped roof?
      Nevertheless, I'm a big fan of Meg, this channel, and my first time seeing this canopy between two shipping containers.

      Yep 👍🏼 Many of Building and container delivery trucks have gone to those remote control 🎛️ trailers. What I think 🤔 is a cool invention is those outbuilding delivery companies have that remote control building mover. It's a little machine looks like a miniature Bull dozer on tracks much like a skid steer. Very cool machine on tracts to put buildings in precise spots & not destroy people's yards and properties. Technology & innovation has came a very long ways 😁👍🏼

    I would highly recommend getting those shipping containers off the ground. 6 inches minimum and a foot would be better. I'd use solid concrete blocks about a foot square/cube. One on each corner and 2 or 4 more in the center or thirds.

    A wonderful achievement you guys getting the container roof up by yourselves. - Superbly done. If you get winds in your valley, you might want to shift some heavy stuff from the workshop container over the to new empty container to help weigh it down to prevent the whole roof becoming a sail if the wind gets a hold of it. Also, a fitted tarp hung at the back end of the roof and tied to the container ends will help to keep you sheltered and protected from any through wind flow, making a pleasant place to live underneath! I love watching you two accomplish things with such enthusiasm and joy. Merry Christmas from a cool, snowfree, and hopefully warming summer down under in NZL, David

    • @loragunning5394
      @loragunning5394 9 дней назад

      Actually, a fitted tarp to cover one or both ends of the new canopy roof would likely have to be attached at several points along the canopy's gable end arch structure, which would subject the arch it was attached to to withstand both the dead load of the gable end tarp as well as any lateral loads from wind acting against the gable end tarp, loads the arch is not likely designed to withstand. Had the gable end arches been designed to withstand those loads, it seems like the manufacturer of the canopy kit would have offered such a gable end tarp as an option or perhaps had another model available that included a closed gable end, no doubt with heavier gable end arches and heavier bolts securing it to the container roof. As the canopy is currently installed, the roof material will be subject to some uplift wind forces as wind travels thru the covered space below, but that will be somewhat offset by that same wind traveling over the upper surface of the canopy. Being as the homestead is located in a valley, and prevailing winds normally travel up or down valleys rather than across the width of the valley, and the fact that the structure is currently roughly aligned parallel to the assumed prevailing wind direction, the canopy as installed really shouldn't be subject to much in the way of lateral wind forces. Uplift forces from wind are significantly less than lateral forces and much easier to design resistance to than lateral forces are. I speak as an architect who sneaked into the profession via the back door of civil/structural engineering nearly 50 years ago, so yes, while the current installation may in fact create a bit of a wind tunnel effect, at least the canopy structure is designed to withstand that. Lastly, modifying the canopy in ANY way would also no doubt completely negate any warranty the manufacturer has provided, so it would be a good idea for the buyers to reach out to the manufacturer prior to making any modifications. Read the buyer's agreement carefully!

      Absolutely she/they should've reached out to the manufacturer and said Hey 👋🏼 we have a YT channel with 100K + Subscribers and we're needing this shelter. If you'll give us One Free of Charge We will advertise it for you on our installation video and periodically mention it in our videos. We will also keep it in the description list of products we use on our channel of all of our videos going forward. This way people who see it on our videos can look you up in our products description with your link to contact you for purchase and others can also buy this same product from you. They could've told the people they bought it from it would be tax deductible for a donation for advertising or charity however they do it in their country. But with 100K subs they can now start reviewing products for companies, & getting products for free for the channel advertising of those products. So yep 👍🏼😁👍🏼 you're right they should've reached out to them to do an advertisement deal in exchange for a free or extremely discounted item and using it as well as advertising it for the company.

    Ferro/Mesh Crete the roof. It will make it more permanent, and increase it's rigidity. If it was me, I would FerroCrete the interior of the fabric, and allow it to cure, then MeshCrete the exterior to lock it in. Once the inside is FerroCreted, the frame will be properly supported, so you won't have as much concerns about the snow load, or weight.
    You can also FerroCrete a wall between the 2 containers blocking off one end giving more protection for your equipment and travel trailer.
    If you REALLY want to make it permanent and to protect it, FerroCrete the containers themselves. A friend was burying a container, but the walls aren't built for the side load, so we FerroCreted them with 3 layers over a month, let it cure for another month, then painted it all with tar to fully seal the walls and roof. Then we filled in the hole. As of 2017 he was still using it as his root cellar/storage/storm shelter in NW Arkansas. He moved to Montana to be near his grandkids, so as far as I know it's still there and working as it should since we buried it in 1991.

    Meg and Mike, Thanks for allowing me to watch you guys. That Bobcat is the best and most useful equipment you ever purchased. One more hand or friend to help would have been very useful. If I didn't live a couple thousand miles away, I would love to lend a hand. Can't wait for your next video. Keep up the good work. By the way, my flag business is doing well.

    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Meg and Mike! When I was driving to Alberta in 2019 I saw a lot of farms in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that had old equipment in the fields. Some even had a cache of Chevrolet or GMC trucks from the 70's and 80's!

    Another fantastic episode. This was the highlight of my Boxing Day viewing or TV. You two are so good together on this project and that structure with the shipping containers was just beautiful. Loved the way the container was delivered which was incredible in itself. Would love to know the sort of temperatures your working in during this winter. Looking forward to the next episode and Merry Christmas, or rather happy holidays in the US.

    something to think about : A big tarp hung from the one end to keep the wind from blowing straight through. It will help to keep rain/snow out of the area, as well as help to keep what little heat gets trapped to stay in there. Also, along the same lines, At the front of the shelter, get 2 smaller tarps to hang and act as doors, for the same reason.
    Also, to keep your trailer a little warmer under there, buy some bales of hay, and stack them around the bottom of it. Or some foam sheet insulation and tuck tape. That will keep any breezes from "robbing" any heat that is able to be trapped under there, Especially if you then put a couple of incandescent (Not LED) 100W light bulbs under there to provide some cheap heat.
