So the big question is: how do you get discipline? Is the desire, the want, enough? Do we need another person or group to force us into doing something we want to do or can't do until we learn to do it for ourselves? People often say it starts at home, with parenting. But what happens when the parents fail due to their own lack of discipline? Due to their own ignorance? How do we get discipline?
I was thinking the same thing. For me as a procrastinator, I need someone to force me all the time and I will only do something if there is no choice left. For me discipline will be ME forcing MYSELF without relying on someone else but that is where discipline is needed in the first place. So in the end it's like a cycle
I resonate so much with this comment. For the past 10 years I've been self-employed. Getting off my ass to do 'work', i.e. do things that are 'not fun' has been almost impossible for me.
Today I am building my career as an online acrobatics coach and the only way I sit down and get to work, is because I couldn't possibly do anything else.
I can't work for someone else. I can't do a project I am not 100% passionate about. That's my finding after a decade of exploration, hating myself and blaming my parents for not teaching me better discipline.
It still isn't easy. I have to orient my whole life around this. I am getting rid of all the distractions, I am cutting out friendships that pull me in the wrong direction. I am forcing myself to go to bed early and wake up early. Sometimes I do complete days of 'no media' because otherwise I get pulled from one interesting RUclips channel to the next. But then... when I'm allowing myself to get bored... eventually I do end up getting to work.
Honestly, it is super hard to not be equipped with the drive, discipline or level of conscientiousness of so many of these high performers.
But at the end of the day, I am happy. I am happy I have worked on myself. I am happy that I provide value to other people via acrobatics coaching. And other people tell me how lucky I am that I can live off my passion. But it only works for me, because I couldn't do anything else.
Oh and because you mentioned desire in your comment. I do have a huge desire - to become a dad. I'm now 30 years old and not yet in the position to be able to afford having a kid. And when I have a kid, I want to have enough time and be present. It's a huge driving force.
Sometimes I imagine talking to my younger self as a 35-, 40-year-old and I am so grateful to myself, that I have put in the hard work in my earlier years.
And because you brought up other people who force us into doing something... I found that I needed to make promises to my students and clients, that they get online course X, or that I support them via Y and to learn Z... those promises are what kept me accountable. Without those promises to other people, I wouldn't get my shit done.
I wish you all the best on your journey! It can look tough, because from the outside so many people make it seem easy. But all people I know who are successful and happy with themselves have gone through some sort of valley of struggles before and gotten out the other side. You've got this.
@@russiandollie I think those who succeed at things, big things, are those who set low goals and achieve them. Again. And again. And again.
A recent example for me was rebuilding my deck. I was quoted well over $10K. On the quote I noticed that a fair amount of the cost was taking down the old deck. Low goal: demo the old deck myself and save some bucks. Another item was to build the two sets of steps leading up to the deck. A few YT videos on building steps and a couple days later I did those. At that point, laying down new deck boards myself started to look pretty doable. Now that's done and my next step will be installing railing all the way around. In the end it will have cost me $2700 in materials and my time. The pros would've done it in three days, and it took me three months, but it was worth it.
Breaking any large task up into manageable chunks makes the impossible seem not only possible, but inevitable. I've been following the YT channel, "Escape to Rural France." That fellow is attempting to rebuild an immense French chateau almost by himself, one shovel of dirt, one brick, one board at a time.
Welcoming all people makes sense for the future. That is what will help us survive.

Love this topic, even more than the infinite game. This applies to so many things in life.
