Your dad is one of a kind! This world needs him and family like yours right now more than ever. Setting a good example is the strongest thing we can do right now, and your dad sets the best! When he says things like “there are too many fish to be caught” or “I have a long way to go, but I’m gonna get there” you can see in his eyes he’s not playing around. He means it. We are all very fortunate and blessed to be even a small part of his recovery. 😊😊😊🙏🙏🙏❤️

You're blessed to still have him and he is blessed to be here moving around. My father had a bad stroke years ago and never was EVER able to move half the body or talk really. He lived 5 years like that and then died of stomach infection. I was only 23 years old and I miss him so much. I'm 39 now. At least I could come by during that 5 years and be able to show him my big fish pics that I told him he taught me how to catch those!! It was bittersweet that he saw my huge Northern Pike that we had been fishing and searching for together for many years. He and we never had caught a huge one let alone one all that big. Cherish your father like never before and just think about how blessed you all really are everyday. This most likely brought you both together even though it was a horrible experience to have a stroke. God bless!

Thanks Tim!!! I’m glad it hit you the same way it hit me. There were quite a few cool things going on in this video, but there was one thing that really stood out and affected me the most.
That was how powerful gratitude can be. Let me start by saying I AM EXTREMELY fortunate to have the job I have and I will NEVER complain about it, however, the changes RUclips has made, were devastating my channel to the point that 90% of the videos I posted in the last 2 years have STILL not paid enough to even cover the expenses to make them. With no light at the end of the tunnel, I was starting to feel hopeless, and hopelessness is the most devastating emotion. As I was finishing up a video that I knew was gonna lose money, I was really wondering how much longer I could justify carrying on. At around 2am I got Bill’s first email with that video clip in it. It hit me in the chest like a wrecking ball. I went from feeling totally beat and hopeless to feeling a new fire to get back at editing and producing new videos asap. I realized then that I didn’t always NEED to get 100,000 views, I just needed to get that ONE view. That one SPECIAL one.
      Thanks again brother!!!
      I appreciate your continued support!

My crew and I got so much out of our trip so in a way, you and your family are heroes to US as well. I tell people something all the time about you. “When Bill looked me in the eye and said- Mike, I’ve got a long way to go, but I’ll get there. There are too many fish that need to be caught” it’s probably the first time in my life I could read someone’s eyes and they said; “I AM GONNA GET THERE” with 100% accuracy. I thought to myself; DANG RIGHT YOU’RE GONNA GET THERE.

Mike you and the boys show just what a community is all about. Watching this made my eyes water…I just moved to New England and I am trying to learn everything I can about saltwater fishing. I found your channel months ago and have been learning weekly from you. Caught my first fish of the year on a spoon that you recommended! I moved from the land locked hills of West Virginia, where there is fishing everywhere, but all freshwater, very different than this type of fishing. When I watch you guys its like watching my family with cousins and uncles out there helping each other out. Keep up the good work! I am gonna make a trip to New Jersey and go fishing sometime soon. Thank you for all the hard work that you do. I know how hard all the stuff you are doing is. I come from the media world, made a couple short movies, hundreds of commercials, have taught video production for a few years. Your output is great and tells a great story in every episode. Hi Mike,
I just wanted to take a minute to thank you and Team Old School for taking Bill on this fishing trip. I don't have the words to express how much it meant to him! He is still talking about it all the time, but as I watched this video it brought back a lot of emotions from the past year. It has been a difficult year to say the least. But with the goodness and grace of our God, the help and support from our amazing family and friends (old and new), we know he will get through it. Bill has always been a hard worker and by far he's the strongest man I know (matter of fact at 61 years old he could still do a one-handed pushup on each arm). Then came the stroke. What a difference one day can make - we were totally devastated! On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the worst, he ended up being about a 4 1/2. He had what they call a progressive Ischemic stroke, which means when he first got to the emergency room he was at a 1 to 1 1/2 but by the end of the day it had progressed to a 4 1/2, and he was completely paralyzed on his right side. Even with that, we feel totally blessed because the doctor told us that a lot of people do not survive that kind of stroke (Bill said God wasn't through with him yet). He stayed in the hospital/rehab facility for over 3 weeks and when he came home he still could not walk or really do much of anything for himself. He worried continuously about the extra work it was putting on me. He said "he just prayed and prayed for God to help him get good enough to be able to take care of his personal needs by himself". After some time he really surprised me when I found him bathing himself - I couldn't believe he managed to get in the tub by himself. Thank you God for answered prayers!! I don't think I have ever seen anybody so determined and work so hard to get better! I remember Bill making us tie his paralyzed arm up on the lawnmower so he could cut the grass. I also remember us both sitting at the kitchen table, one night just a few months ago, and crying because he actually was able to pick up a little bolt with 2 fingers. I've learned we really take a lot for granted!
As he started to regain a little movement, I would hear him say Andi, Lincoln, Titus, Lydia, Steven, that was his way of counting his reps while exercising - Grandkids can give you a lot of motivation!! After weeks had passed I knew something had changed when I heard him say Andi, Lincoln, Titus, Lydia, Steven, Old School. That's when I discovered Bill had found your videos, and they really gave him a boost. Then I'll never forget the night I came home and he told me you had invited him to come to New Jersey and fish with you and Team Old School. He was so excited, like a kid at Christmas. All I could say is "When are you going"? You don't know it, but when Bill told you he was coming, he still couldn't hold a rod and turn the reel handle, but he said he was going to be able to by the time he got there! He worked and worked and I believe he made that goal!
Bill still has a long way to go, but I believe that fishing trip gave him just the boost he needed! He definitely came home with something very special, and I'm not talking about that one-of-a-kind custom rod, although that was very special, I'm talking about the very special, unique friendships he made with an incredible team of people! Thank you again for all you have done for us!
Mike, you and Team Old School are Second to None!!
    Love ya, Mean it!!

Wow! What an incredible story. There are so many amazing things to take from that. I’m as close to speechless as I ever get,(and it’s hard to keep me quiet)😆. I’m not a super religious person, but you would have to be blind to not see God in this story. At the time Bill sent me his first “thank you” video I was becoming very frustrated and starting to feel more and more hopeless. The changes that RUclips made were really killing my channel. I am VERY fortunate to be able to make a living this way, but the amount of work I had to do to get to that point was massive. I’m talking about missing mortgage payments, maxing out credit cards and sleeping in my truck at boat ramps. Just when I was starting to see the fruits of my labor, RUclips said “nope”. It got so bad that I would earn around 20 cents an hour on most videos. I was starting to think “why bother”? Nobody is watching these videos anymore. RUclips buries them. Bill’s first video was really like a revelation for me. The view numbers didn’t matter like I thought they did. (Just that 1 view was good enough for me.) Bill’s “thank you” video to us was really what I needed to see at the exact time I saw it. I went from feeling hopeless to hopeful during the 3 minute run time of his video. With each video he sent I felt better and better about getting paid 20 cents an hour. I never knew how powerful a “thank you” could be. Bill is an amazing person and he’s obviously surrounded by an amazing family. That’s very easy to see.
I’m putting a folder together with all of the “thank you messages and emails” I’ve already started getting. A few are from people that were losing the will to fight before hearing his story. A few are from guys that are now looking for people THEY can take fishing. I received an email today from a guy that took 2 guys out this week. One is fighting cancer and the other is fighting alcohol addiction. I have a feeling that Bill’s “thank you” is gonna truly affect a lot of lives. The most powerful thing we can do these days is set an example and Bill set the best with the help of his family. ❤️❤️❤️😁

@@jace6555 thank you so much! Bill is one of a kind and has an amazing family. We weren’t aware at the time, but a year later we spoke with Bill and his brother Rusty. Rusty said that at the time we set a date to fish together Bill was in a VERY weak state. In fact Rusty didn’t think he was going to be strong enough for the trip. Of course I had no idea either, otherwise I would’ve had him wait another 4-5 months or so. Rusty said that what Bill accomplished in such a short amount of time was absolutely amazing. They showed me some videos from just 2-3 months prior to our trip and I almost couldn’t recognize Bill. He couldn’t walk at all unassisted and could barely lift a 2lb dumbbell. Rusty said he was so excited to fish that he took his physical “therapy” up to 10. I knew he went through hell, but I wasn’t aware it was to that degree. Bill’s story made a very strong and positive impact on my life personally. I honestly feel that I got just as much from that trip as Bill. He would say over and over that “there are just too many fish to catch Mike, and I’m gonna get there. I’m telling you, if you look him in the eye when he says that, you just KNOW he is INDEED going to get there. Now I’ve decided to sweep all of the little things that I would worry about right out the door because “there are just to many fish to catch “.
Bill said so. 😁🙏👍. Thanks for your support!!! 🙏🙏

Great Job Mike! Might be the best video yet. I fish the Raritan Bay and have seen you out there. If I see you again and you're not surrounded by 100 other boats again, I'll say Hi, as you have certainly helped my Striper success rate!
What's your take on the umbrella rigs? I have had a lot of success using them to help me find some Striper when they're spread out a bit. I am also a big fan of the flutter spoons, they work great once you find them. The bay gets some pretty wild feeding frenzies near dusk in spring and fall, the top water are a blast in those moments.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад

Thanks brother!! Next time you better pull up and say high. 😆 I’ll have some baits to give you.
It’s a very strange thing! We start fishing totally alone 9 out of 10 times, yet somehow we end up smack dab in the center of the fleet🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️. 🤔🤔🤔🤔😜.
I love U rigs on salt and freshwater. The secret of the Urig is in 8-10ft of water. I don’t troll them like most trollers do. (Setting a course straight along the channel). I get crazy aggressive with them. I set them back far enough to stay at 25-30 ft deep at around 3mph. Then I’ll throttle up to 6-8 mph and run up and over a shallow hump or other shallow contour. In lakes I’ll go right up the points. I throttle up and drive the boat right up a point, hump, or drop-off. Pull up to 8-10 feet deep at 6-8 mph then turn off the point onto deeper water. The bow curve in the line is key. That’s how you control the presentation. I can do that so when im heading back down the point in a U turn, my rigs are still climbing up to shallow water. You will see the big bow in the line. Keep your speed up so the rigs just barely tick the bottom and slow down when you feel the rigs are back over deeper water. I do this all day. It’s unlike any other types of trolling. Some of my biggest freshwater Stripers came of a Urig. I had a 40lber AND a 50lber on the same rig with several straight hooks on the other baits in Tennessee. Make sure you have a rig retriever. In lakes I get snagged regularly, but barely any snags at all in salt. Hope this helps. Keep me posted 👍👍. Thanks again brother!!
