    As a retired dental assist, I have the utmost respect for Dr. Dan Fischer DDS, the founder of Ultradent Dental Products. He not only created an excellent company, but he and Shem were instrumental in helping many persons leave the FLDS, especially the Lost Boys that Warren Jeffs ostracized. Thank you Dr Fischer and Shem for you courage and saving many young lives. Thank you Shem for also having the strength and courage to stand up against one of the most evil men ever to walk the earth, Warren Jeffs.

    This was SO interesting. I vote for one more vid in which Shem talks (to the degree he's willing) about how his kids have done, his remarriage (based on the wedding ring), if he's normal LDS now or a true "apostate", etc... and any other kids he knows about for which he can discuss. Also, Melissa, my heart is always with the girls... please consider asking more questions about the female experience if you can. I feel like life was much harder for them...

    • @ekjordan
      @ekjordan 3 года назад +42

      Agree! I'd love to hear more of female perspectives. All these ex-FLDs men saying they had a good childhood. Yes. That's the point. You are the demographic that the system the mormon church and its offshoots have been created to benefit. Glad they realized something was off and left but hope they also recognize what was going on to give them those fond childhood memories.

    • @montyollie
      @montyollie 3 года назад +21

      YES! I love Melissa's questions... she almost always asks exactly what I'm thinking. But more of the female experience would be wonderful.

    • @cynthia-n9w
      @cynthia-n9w 3 года назад +23

      @@ekjordan Exactly. I get a little anxious (? I can't come up with the right word) when the men talk about their happy childhoods. Meanwhile, Josh's half-sister has a hard time even articulating how difficult it was for her. Maybe Shem (based on the legal cases) can discuss how some of the child brides have fared since the community was basically shattered.

      (Melissa) We would love to do a part 2 with Shem at some point. My heart is with the women as well. It is a difficult thing because honestly there aren't as many women who have left as there are men (for obvious control reasons). I don't usually like asking too many questions to the men about women's experiences because they just don't have the insight, and I don't want men telling the women's stories for them (they've had enough of that in their lives). We are hoping and actively trying to line more interviews up with women, but because they often have more trauma, they are also a lot of times not ready to share their stories yet. We don't want to open wounds for people that have not healed from their experiences for any reason, especially for something as insignificant as a RUclips video. We love and support all of the women that we know that have left, and when they are ready and comfortable in telling their story, we will be so happy to interview them and share their stories with all of you. I think that telling your story, no matter who you are, can give you power, and we hope to empower some of those women in the future by letting them tell theirs.

    2 of my mom's sisters were married to Shem's brother. Their husband worked full time for the flds without pay. His family suffered so much you wouldn't believe. One day when she was at her brother's house, she picked up an apple core off the floor that someone was sweeping, washed it off and ate it. That is when we realized how bad it really was for them. We'd bring them food and clothes, but it would just embarrass them more. But everyone was struggling so we couldn't help much.

    I’d like to point out that it was probably a lot safer for HIM to grow up then his sisters. I grew up in the People of Praise and my experience with a blissful, community-driven childhood is almost identical. (We also called our group “the Community” and people were “commanded” to move to different cities or neighborhoods by their spiritual heads.) Things changed for me once I hit puberty. Constant body shaming, spanking for misbehavior, no sex Ed, even the difference between consensual sex outside of marriage and rape…like I said, the experience of girls might have been a little different.

    • @marthamontgomery9905
      @marthamontgomery9905 2 месяца назад

      Yes - it sounds like the very very very large difference in the human rights of women compared to men in most of this groups needs to always be considered when we hear descriptions of idyllic childhoods - those are the boys experiences

    There is so much information in this video. I know I will have to watch it again. So happy that reaching out is being done for those still involved and links to organizations. So much of what was said is true in other aspects of life in this country now. Having to admit what you believed so fervently is not the truth. How horrible that greed for power corrupted something that once had wonderful aspects, the teaching of core values, ethics and community. Thank you for this wonderful vlog. I can only wish for the abundance of good for Shem Fischer and family for the good he has put out to the world.

    I'm so glad you're interviewing him. I really like him. He really has great insight into the community and has worked so hard to help those who can get out. I'm so glad he got his house back! Very cool dude and I hope he knows how valuable he is to those in or out of the community in finding freedom. I can't really imagine being under that kind of 'rule' and going along with it, like he said, it apparently changed a lot into something that was about power and money rather than religion with religion just being the 'hold' to get the power and money. That's not religion, that's brainwashing. God is good and kind and would never want anyone to suffer like that or be separated from their families on a whim. That's not God talking, that's power talking. Not the same thing.

    I appreciate this interview and his insight. I had similar reactions to many when he talked about a good childhood... It was probably better for the boys. His statements of not EVER going after poligamy also bothered me. ANY time a woman is told her only way into heaven is through a man is wrong, misogynistic, and ridiculous. Again I do appreciate so much of what he had to say but these are points that I struggled with.

    That was a great video! Very interesting to hear from someone old enough to remember the FLDS life and leadership prior to the Jeffs. My favorite part was hearing about the times Shem stood up to Warren, leaving Warren totally at a loss for how to handle that. Warren was basically a bully, and just like when you stand up to a bully...they lose their power over you and don't know how to take that. I also loved hearing from Shem about being in the front lines to help stop the abuse and corruption/criminal activity, as well as helping the victims of it. Mr Fischer hit the nail on the head with what he said in the meeting - that as soon as a religion starts breaking up families (which are the core of our society) then that is when it is going very wrong. I am glad he was able to get out and certainly it is work, education and skills which protects men and women in all these situations so if people do nothing else try to ensure your children have a good education. that in my view involves women and men - when you have two separate careers in a family even when you have young children - you are both protected in case things go wrong.
    He speaks very well and coherently too (at least from the standpoint of those of us in the UK - good English and easy to understand)
    [I liked seeing the lady who came no to the video in the background by mistake and then retreated!]

    When I first realised that Warren Jeffs still has so much control over people, even from prison I honestly wished he would disappear from the planet, in what ever form that took. All the suffering him and his father caused countless innocent people, especially children shows just how evil he truly is. All the love and support that the people in the FLDS show him yet he continues to make all their lives as hard as it can possibly be. So glad for the people that have escaped/left. I mean if Jeffs continues like he is doing the religion will cease to exist. No marriages and no more kids it's just a matter of time.

    I am very sure I have seen this man and his house (and some of his kids) in some documentary on lost boys! Where he took a few in and kicked them out - but after almost a YEAR later and when they were going the wrong way. And then still helping them from the sideline. And I also remember, I think, him being mentioned in other peoples memoirs! And I live on the other side of the earth. How cool is that!

    I have so enjoyed, if that's the right term, listening to all of you. I always felt awful for what the young girls were doing forced to do. Abuse is abuse. God Bless.

      His dad was eventually invited back into the church, but didn't get his family back. His mom left town with the jeffs family around 2004, and even her children and grandchildren in the church were not allowed to spend time with her. About 1012, she was told she was guilty of having an abortion and banished from the church. She lives in Idaho with others of shem's family who were kicked out of the church. But she is still a believer and doesn't have contact with her kids out of or in the flds.
      Shem's dad passed away a decade or so ago also.
