- No more secrets! If you want to catch bass in heavy cover, this video is for you! Did you know you can punch with a dropshot? In today's in-depth video the guys cover this trick and so much more as they give away all the secrets to consistently catching bass with a flipping stick.
When Summer largemouth bass head deep into heavy cover it requires very heavy tackle to get them back out. Punching, flipping, and pitching are the three techniques used to reach these bass lurking in the shadows. If you're the first angler in your area to pick up a flippin stick you will be amazed by how many bass are deep in the cover. Matt and Tim put their heads together in this nearly 40-minute seminar and teach everything from creature bait selection to color preferences, right down to which speed reel will make your life easier for a long day of flipping.
Traditionally these bass are reached using a heavy Texas-Rigged creature bait on 65 lb braid. This method is deadly and has been responsible for producing an incredible number of big bass. However, as fish become conditioned there are times that a heavy jig and even a heavy dropshot will far outshine the Texas Rig. Knowing this little nuances makes all the difference and Matt and Tim aren't afraid to show you exactly how and when to make the adjustments.

Your vids this year have been phenomenal. Bought myself a dedicated flippin stick this spring thanks to your vids...best fishing related decision I have ever made. Went with a G Loomis E6x 7’6” H, will be upgrading next year with an Expride or Loomis NRX. Been catching bigger fish this summer than other years past and it is because of all the vids you guys put out about fishing heavy cover and jig fishing. Started to fish in areas I used to shy away from cause I never had the right gear or the confidence to buy it. Won a small one day kayak derby pitching a jig in the gnarliest wood piles I could find. Stuck a 5.5 on the jig that I will never forget. Thanks Matt and Tim, keep it up!
Great video as always!! Would like to see dif examples of cover where you would punch. And also would like to see how you guys would plan a fishing trip and pick spots to try before even getting to the lake. Using lake maps, navionics, or what have you.. I think I speak for everyone when I say you guys are one of the most informative bass fishing channels on RUclips. Really love the content. Appreciate the content on a couple of my favorite techniques! Also thanks for the saftey advice. I just recently was hit by a 1 ounce tungsten bullet right below my armpit closer to my back. It knocked the wind out of me and it broke the skin and left a bruise the size of a grapefruit. It is a serious matter like you both mentioned and your honesty the first ones ive seen talk about it. Thats why TB is the best!!

This video was HUGE for me. I fished Pennsylvania lakes where I grew up for many years. Those lakes have an extraordinary variety of structure and cover. But I moved to northern Indiana a few years ago where all these lakes are literally giant, empty mud bowls surrounded by various lily pads and weeds making them VERY hard to catch! I'll be employing all of these techniques on my very next trip. THANK YOU!

Can you guys do a video about a "go to" bass box? Enough stuff to fill a single plano 3700 utility box, but enough variety you'd feel confident Catching bass just about anywhere, and in a variety of conditions.

I'm not tactical bassin but I'd say a black and a frog color popping frog, some kind of 4-5 inch walking stick bait in a shad color, small popper in shad, bluegill, or bass color, whopper plopper, shad red craw and chartreuse 1.5 squarebills, bluegill, red craw, shad and chrome red eye shad/lipless bait, chartreuse and white tandem blade and shad color 1/2 oz double willow spinnerbait, white chartreuse and white and black and blue chatterbait 3/8-1/2 oz, 3/8 oz bluegill and shad swimjig, 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz green pumpkin and black and blue flipping jigs, 1/2 oz pb&j football jig, 10-15 foot deep diving crankbait in chartreuse and shad color, 2-5 foot depth jerkbait in a clear and chrome color, white buzz bait, green pumpkin and junebug senko, green pumpkin trick worm and 10 inch curl tail worm in red bug
Where do you live? That's gonna vary a lot. What is the clarity on you favorite lakes, how many feet can you see the bottom on?
If I could only have one box I would pack 5" Senkos, wide gap hooks, variety of bullet weights, few crank baits (regular and lipless), mushroom head jigs, few jerk baits (chrome, white, and yellow/orange belly), If I could some jigs, swim baits stuff, and spinner baits. Probably some time of creature bait too.
With those baits you could throw texas rig, neko, ned, and of course all the hard baits mentioned too. This would allow you to fish sunny and clear days, calm or windy, spring, summer, and fall.

This hit home. I LOVE FLIPPING & PITCHING. I JUST BOUGHT A BASS PRO SHOPS BIONIC BLADE. Heavy action not 65lb braid. But 30lb. Braid...strike king with 25lb flouro. And i love the set up. Thanks guys these video helped me be more unorthodox and out of the box thinking.

Thanks for all the info. Gonna try some first time punching next weekend. One thing I'd recommend trying while trying to free a snag is to wrap your braid around a dowel or other object that will not get cut by the braid and just start tugging.
It will keep you from getting dig in on your reel, and I find it easier to manage than the rod while I pull.

This is such a well timed video! I am on an impromptu trip up in Maine and I didnt bring my boat... when I was loading gear in the truck my flipping stick would not fit so I left all my punching gear at home... I do have an expride 7’3” XH and some tokyo rigs..... I’m going to give it a try....
i have been punching since the late 90's before it was cool. A lot of very good info in this video.
My .02 cents: Any 7'6"+ heavy action rod will work great. 50# regular power pro braid is all you need and gets through the mats better. If you are breaking that then you have other problems. It is not the line.
As for reels you need a good one with quality brass gears and a stiff frame. That means composite frame reels are a no go and so are elcheap O bass pro and academy specials. This technique wears out cheap reels because of the constant stress being put on them. Composite frame reels flex too much and rob you of pulling power. A 6.5 to 7.5 gear ratio reel is ideal. Speeds over 7.5 are too much and you won't have enough power to turn the handle. Any reel from Shimano, Citica on up the line except for CI4 chronarch, is a good reel no matter how old. The Lews superduty seems to be good as well. After using one for over a year it has not developed any slack. Lews and shimano are the only reels i trust for longevity.
Bigger hooks doesn't always mean better hook ups. It is more about the shape of the weight blowing the mouth open on hook set. This is critical when you go over 1oz in sinker size. i stick with 3/0 and 4/0 hooks strait shank heavy wire. They all the brands seem to work about the same to me. Picasso and River2Sea seem to be best big weights by far.
ROD ROD RODs, like i said any rod will work, BUT if you plan to punch all day buy a light and well balanced rod. A rod of this nature is worth its weight in gold. If you can't afford a super light rod at least get one that is balanced with the reel you plan to put on it. You will be worn out quickly by a top heavy rig even though the overall weight my be lighter than some other rod that is well balanced. My favorite punching rod is the Powell Endurance 806. At $150 it is affordable by today's standards. You can spend more and get "better" but bang for buck you can't find a better stick.
I like a 7'6" ish heavy or MH for up to an 1 oz weight or 1 1/4oz weight with a smaller bait. Anything heavier than that gets the 8 footer. My favorite 7'6" is a Powell Inferno 765CEF that they don't seem to make anymore.

Tim, I agree with the smell/straight shank hook. The levering of the hook can be exaggerated even more by using a glass bead. The bead makes the hook go 90 degrees towards hookup. It also makes noise on the hop.

When I first started drop shotting I didn't like the natural approach and did what you're doing 😂. Power drop shot or whatever it's called. I like aggressively picking pockets and constantly dropping in keys areas. If I don't get bit in the first few seconds it's time to move to another drop 3', 5, or even more away.
I would love a video about when to use natural/confidence presentations vs branching out and trying a new presentation that the fish might have not seen before.
Also a video about fishing soft paddle tail swimbaits rigged weedless, particularly from banks. Like how to react when the bite is subtle and when to set the hook. I keep missing fish/: i love your guys videos thanks for everything!
