I’d be interested to hear how all the fish are biting through out the day like a tick, a pull or just weight . I struggle with figuring out the dead weight bite. I think my rod might not have a soft enough tip
Go up on your tungsten size. A 1 or 1¼oz will drop right in; you won't have to wonder. Sometimes they just suck it in; other times they'll knock the snot out of it. But have at least a 7'6"-8' daubin' stick to snatch 'em out when they snap it up.
@@jacobwallfishing that’s why I was suggesting maybe if they are changing the way they bite if Mikey would describe maybe it will help me look for certain things
@@shadygraves I have a 7’6 heavy kistler helium it’s a broom stick for sure I’ve been throwing an oz weight but it seems like the only bites I’ve been getting is just a pick up and the fish runs like crazy pulling my rod. But for as much as I punch heavy pads where I’m at I’ve never picked up and felt a fish . It’s always on the initial fall. Not even the initial pick up. Which makes me think I’m not recognizing the bite on the first pull. I’ve felt what I thought to be my bait hitting a strand of grass but I feel like I’m missing something here . Also I haven’t produced many numbers on this technique this year. Last year I was on em now it’s been few and far between
Just bought a place on Panasoffkee, watching tons of MB videos to figure out how to flip/punch/pitch. These are bonafide great tutorials with the needed questions answered. Headed to 44 Tackle as soon as I get there!
Learned a lot from it. Went punching first time yesterday on Nickajack. 6/6 no misses. Dobyns fury 805 rod, Daiwa tatula 200 7.3:1, 50# braid. Need to head to guntersville next!!
really wonderful sir, keep staying deep, more indepth material like this is truly helpful to those of us who don't get many opportunities to punch and flip. This was so good!!!!
Mikey, been watching you forever! You're by far my favorite fisherman to watch and learn from. Just ordered my first Halo. Halo KS II Elite 6'10 medium. Picked up a Diawa BG 2500 to pair with it. Your high praise on both made it an easy choice.
If you're east of the Rockies, put a Reactions Innovations Hematoma Sweet Beaver on a 1oz tungsten, 3/0 Superline hook, peg it, put a Woody's 5mm glass rattle in it, and spray it with BANG Crawfish scent. STICK WITH THIS SETUP until you can place it where you want and can wiggle it down in the grass. 7'6" Heavy Flipping Stick and 50lb braid. Master this and you will be Master of Your Domain!
I'm up in NJ while most guys are out on the main lake points an weed lines I've had garbage all to myself! But this year there's been a bit of competition in the shallow weed. Wish they all Stayed out. But you can't hide the magic for long. Lots of good fishermen now!
A 1oz tungsten on a Sweet Beaver falls at an excellent rate of speed. Don't be afraid of a fast fall. Often times it will produce a strike. I prefer it to most all other weights.
Mikey I've tried punching a little bit had a couple bites, but not connected. Thank you so much for these past several videos you've done. I've watched them multiple times and can't wait to get back out and try this again. You showing use exactly where and what to punch has been awesome.
Dude, this is really useful info and much appreciated! I'm admittedly a rookie at the pitching and punching game but I want to get better and this helps alot. Im in FL so this skill is pretty much mandatory. Thanks!
My local lake is full of Matt's on one end and 90% of the shoreline,so I was looking for new ways to fish it when I found your punching vids..I went out this morning early and topwatered a whole, then decided to try punching..as I tied on I gotta a call to work😢..I had to pitch it 1x..I caught a 2.5lb'r on the 1st and only cast!!..I'm HOOKED,I'll be out at daylight tomorrow 💯
Awesome vid as always, I just ordered the Halo HFX 7’11” the TI only had two options on TW and the HFX was a little more in my current price range. Wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on halo without your video thanks man.
Got some bbcrickets today, and some big ewg to try that floro craw combo around domes. Responding hvy braid as well . 50lb is too weak for this. Trying 65.and if not good Goin 80!.
Great tips brother Balzz! What tips can you offer to keep a 2 oz tungsten from hitting the water like a bowling ball? I can get the 1 and 1 1/2 in pretty quiet but seem to land a bit harder than I would like . As usual I appreciate any advice . Thx in advance bro !
My advice would be to put a plate in your back yard and practice. That 2 oz tungsten makes a Godawful racket and will even break that plate if you don't put the brakes on and pull back, EVER SO SLIGHTLY, just as it hits. Break enough of your wife's plates; you'll get good in a hurry! Seriously, PRACTICE. You must be in 100% control of your tackle at ALL times. That little back pressure comes with practice.
Outstanding Mikey. Absolutely outstanding, great vid man loved it as always. Punched all day today up here in the north and murdered it. By far my favorite fishing tech 👍🏻
I'm going be punching for the first time during my first tournament this weekend. What should I be expecting when I get a bite? How many times do you suggest Yo-Yoing it before retrieving and flipping again? Great video as always, keep them coming.
Great question. He's right; 5-6 pumps or shakes of the rod is standard if you wanna fish at a faster clip. If you DON'T separate the tentacles on a Sweet Beaver, it more closely resembles the "folded up", fleeing posture of a crawfish. It also tends to glide and fall in different directions more, giving you a larger strike zone than just up and down. Put a small glass rattle in it for that clicking sound and to make you shake it more. Also, spray it with BANG Crawfish scent. This attracts fish, makes them hold on longer, and also "slicks it up", giving you better grass pentration. Hematoma Beaver or Junebug BB Cricket will get you BIT.
Enjoy your videos as always! Miss seeing you down here at headwaters and other Florida waters! By the way, what is a sercret? Must be one of those new pro bass guy terms! 😉 Keep the videos coming as they are great learning tools!
No I don't I just tie it with a straight Palomar I have tried Snelling it and I just don't like it it's also really hard to tie a snell knot with fluorocarbon
Mikey, Do you have a preference for your braid color? I know some anglers would use a black marker to black out the braid near the bait, and some manufacturers are even making black braid. What’s your opinion on that?
honestly i could care less - green, black, brown, just not flourescent stuff. i think there's so much cover where you're using braid that it sort of just blends in. personally i think it's the sound of braid in water and the sound it makes rubbing the grass that spooks fish.
Laughing My Ass Off I love the term “Dangle Dick It” !! My Stepdad who raised me from 9 until I left home (My Pop) use to say it all the time. You using it brought back many memories of him.
Good stuff right there brother!! 👍 FYI I know where you were and i have caught some bigs there multiple times virtually dropping a jerk bait of sorts beside those pylons
Whoa- so you're throwing 3/4 ounce on your open water rig? Wow- maybe this is why I suck at flipping. Not at the actual act of flipping- I'm fine there, my problem is just getting bit. But it's been drilled into my head over and over again to always use the lightest weight possible- maybe this is the problem, I'm not getting a fast enough fall to attract bites? I mean I understand when you're punching you have to use whatever will get you down there but, in open water, around the cover- I would've assumed you went down to a half ounce at most- lower if possible.
It's all about that fall! Fast is good! ¾-1oz is good most of the time. Hematoma Sweet Beaver, 50lb braid 3/0 Superline hook and you're good 365 days a year!
@@shadygraves Thanks for the info.- yeah, sounds like I've been going about it all wrong. Does depth ever come into play? Like what do you consider too shallow to try punching or pitching around? Or do you just lighten up then or what?
Weights depend on the time of the year, fish activity, and wind along with cover obviously. During the spring/spawn I might flip anywhere from 1/8oz - 1/2oz Depending on cover, wind, and depth. Usually during the summer, I like flipping a 3/4oz to the same places and depths I'll flip a 3/8oz earlier the year because that faster rate of fall will trigger a more aggressive reaction bite in those hot months when the fish have a higher metabolism...

It is really hard to say how they are going to bite the bait. It varies through out the day you might have 5 or 6 different kinds of bites.
