I am hosting them on my channel as a labour of love for the gentleman’s game that cricket was once. Спорт
What a thorough gentleman Vijay Merchant was!His voice was so sonorous !People loved his commentary by heart.
So articulate in his mannerisms and reply 👍
So perfectly articulated. Back in the early 80s there used to be radio show on Sunday afternoons immediately after Bournvita Quiz contest called Cricket with Vijay Merchant. I was too young to understand but remember the perfect English diction and articulation in the talk show.
Are these recordings available?
Great childhood memories of Sunday afternoon in Bombay
Indeed. A walk down memory lane. Can never forget those days. It was not the quantity of shows but the quality. Few and far between but memorable.
Merchant averaged 71 in 150 fc matches and 47 in the limited number of 10 tests he played. Probably one of the greats of yesteryear. Merchant and Gavaskar would have made a formidable opening pair if the generations ever crossed.
Vijay Merchant, visionary admunistrator and great batsman gave us Wadekar victory against WI and Eng in 1971
INDIA NEVER LOST WHEN G R VISHWANATH HIT A CENTURY.
He reminds me of my grandfather era. Have seen this era scorecards in manorama book and sportstar. What a generation it was. The very first Indian cricket team. His calm demeanor reflects the at that time Gandhian ideals in him.
gandhian Ideals?? like robing congress president post from Subash Chandra bose? allowing British to loot the indian grains during World war II and being the architect of hunger deaths of Millions of Bengalis? preaching non violence and then allowing indian army to be deployed in world war to defend the british Monarchy? Stealing the money that was given to the greatest Tamil freedom fighter V O Chidambaram Pillai. Let us not demean Vijay Bhai in comparing with an anti national like Ghandi
I rode a cab ride with Vijay Merchant escorting him to preside over a sports event at Purandere Stadium near Dadar. He told me many stories of great players. Vijay Merchant played Mumbai cricket for Fort Vijay...I think he started that club in Azad Maidan right across the Tata Palace.
Wonderful and very simple. Great people

*ONE OF THE GOATS OF INDIAN CRICKET*
Sehwag was in total contrast to Merchant School of Batting.
And with remarkable success.
Well, times change. With time changes everything. When I was growing up, Sunil Gavaskar was the greatest player and nobody thought anyone could equal his record. Nobody could have imagined Tendulkar will come along after 2 decades and change everything!
Contrary to what people think, he was a great proponent of scoring fast. He used to be unhappy with Jimmy Amarnath because he felt no 3 batter should score fastest. He was sometimes boring but I often enjoyed when he and Anant Setalwad commentated together making very interesting observations, I miss him even today from test cricket...
Tendulkar should have heeded Vijay Merchant's advice on retirement.
The legendary Vijay Merchant ❤🙏🙏
Complete agree

I have read in news magazine that he used to send regularly an amount to his retired car driver in Trivandrum. His daughter married the music teacher who came to teach her.Tamil Iyengar married as per Arya Samaj rites in a temple . He was disturbed about this.Later in the radio programme his son Amar used to deliver his speech in some episodes
Little did he know that in 2 years time there will be a player named gavaskar who is going to break all records
He wa a cricketer not crystal ball gazer to know the future .
@@rj6404 😃😃😃
During the test series between west indies and India in the year of 1974 he and Lala Amaranth was a extra comenetatior
I have seen a documentary by Sri Vijay Manjrekar on future of Indian cricket. It was about 45 min. It was very interesting. If you have the copy please share with the followers of old cricket.
Merchant school of batting should be implemented in IPL 😅
Greater cricketar
Nostalgic.I was regular listner of his program Cricket with Vijay Merchant at 1.30 pm on sundays over AIR in Seventies. I wrote to him about making the programme more interesting by including Listeners. He invited me to his board room in Vithaldas Chambers Horniman circle. Many were invited. I asked him why he did not object to AFS Talyarkhan call for boycott of Davis cup Tennis in South Africa by India. He teplied that Talyarkhan was a Guru to him and highly respected.Hence he did not express his view.Had a piece icecream and spent 2 hours on a sunday afternoon. One should Quit when others should ask Why and not when whynot is his famous advice
The advice given by Vijay Merchant when to quit was given to Merchant by great England batsman Patsy Hendren on his 1946 tour to England . Merchant went on preaching that advice . Patsy scored 170 centuries ( First class and Test )played for Middlesex and England . His footwork was almost like boxer. Scored 205 not out vs West Indies , Port of spain 1929- 30 .. I met Vijay Merchant when I was 12 years of age . Thanks for sharing your memories.

Merchant school lasted till one Shewag came and all the schools were shut.
Heard of Engineer whom Merchant himself mentioned here? Heard of Krish Srikanth? Sehwag was sensational but he only followed in the footsteps of the other two.
Please do a video of Shanta Rangaswamy and her whereabouts.
Wonder why put GRV in the caption. Just a passing mention by VM - nothing more
How good would the Colonel would be rated against Sachin,Kohli etc.
Is that a scar on his chin when he got hit by MS Nichols?
I remember the names from the movie namak halal.amitab bacchan was explaining how to speak English
In indian cricket no batter is bigger than Vijay marchant.
Can anyone tell me the date and year of this fantastic interview. And who is the interviewer please?
