  • The road to In Through The Out Door led me to research every detail about the record. The episode discusses my personal experience discovering the album, the state of play for Led Zeppelin in 1978 and the elements that made up the sound on the final product: the Yamaha GX-1 and Polar Studios.

    THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT A BAND I'VE EVER SEEN!! I am transfixed. Just for my own personal copy (not to distribute or anything), I've burned a Blu-ray with the 7 episodes and am watching it now in my home theater. It is stunning. Amazing work, my friend.
    IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR is my first Zeppelin album. Just an accident. I was blown away instantly by IN THE EVENING. PRESENCE is still my favorite Zep album...but IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR is up there. And frankly, I listen to the three left-over songs (from CODA) as if they're part of IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR. These ten songs show so many shades of the band...as PHYSICAL GRAFFITI did. And when people try and claim the band "softened" at the end, just take one listen to WEARING AND TEARING.
    I've read 20 books on Led Zeppelin. I have all the pro-shot shows that have surfaced on Blu-ray or DVD. I have a great HD collection of their 8mm concert clips. And yet, I'm learning so much about this band just from this documentary. It is BEAUTIFULLY done.
    I applaud you, JCM. I cannot wait to see more. I will soon give a donation as well.

    My introduction to Led Zeppelin in 1972 - in 5th grade we still had “Show ‘n Tell” and a fellow student brought in an album. He put the album on the single speaker record player, set the rpm’s to 33 1/3 (I think), dropping the needle and out of the speaker came “Hey mama see the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove…” The teacher immediately yelled “TAKE THAT OFF”…no more Zeppelin that day but I was hooked ever since.

    Why would anyone trash that great Led Zep album? It has 3 of their most recognizable hit songs on it! “In The Evening,” “Fool In The Rain,” and “All My Love.” As well as bouncy boppers like “South Bound Saurez, “Hot Dog,” “Carouselambra” and the deeply bluesy “I’m Gonna Crawl,” the album is a very tight, historically important final studio piece of the band’s art…

It's Jonesy's moment, but Page does so many things that on guitar that I feel really exposed a part of him that was born from his young days listening to Scotty Moore, and Link Wray, and his skiffle youth. Them there was this beautiful shade to all of it. "I'm Gonna Crawl", has one of the most effective guitar solos of all time with just a few notes.

    I was discovering Zeppelin in 1984 while my classmates were getting into Run DMC . The only current band I liked at that time was the Police and they were over the heads of most 13 year olds . I knew Zeppelin were superior to the shit on the radio in 1984. I scoffed when people suggested that any Mtv band was in their league. I knew what I heard on their albums was next level stuff. I kinda hoped that eventually some band would come along that could match them for versatility and move me like they could , but so far it still hasn't happened.

    Very well-produced video that I enjoyed watching. As a life-long Zeppelin fan, I respected and appreciated "In Through the Outdoor" because of its diversity. You didn't hear hardly any rock acts during that time with a country song (Hot Dog), a tribute-type ballad (All My Love) and a soul song (I'm Gonna Crawl) all on one album. It was a very gutsy and ambitious album that, in my opinion, should get more recognition.

      Agreed, and although it may be blasphemy to some on here, the only other band who could pull off country, ballad and soul in an album would be The Rolling Stones. I remember when ITTOD came out as a Freshman in High School. It was different and great, I really enjoyed it, even to this day, it's one of my favorite albums due to its range. Consider myself the biggest fan of this greatest band of all time….and was waiting with baited breath for each release…..so what I can tell you about that last record is the difference and the shame was based around JP having sunken into the full depths of heroin addiction….so the other three had to step it up…especially JPJ….so it’s different sounding and not entirely a JP vision like the previous records….the sad truth is JP cleaned up just as the tour dates were beginning but then JB dies….so there you have….JP went back on the spike for another couple few years and frankly was never the same player as in the early days….much of this is why RP never agreed to and sort of a reunion…..all very sad….but aren’t we glad that this best ever band existed….they are the most influential ever….they simply permeated into the brains of the 70s youth like no other band…..

    • @timothyslaughter476

      They used to have a showing of the song remains the same at a local movie theater in the late 70's every Friday and Saturday night in Baltimore Maryland. It was an old school theater...big...held about 400-500. It was sold out every weekend until the crowds got so unruly and violent they had to cut it out. There were motorcycle gangs and rumors of chainsaw fights and the whole bit. But zeppelin was huge and the entire catalog was the soundtrack of life to many fans. In through...was a great album. Some critics dismissed it but perhaps because some of the other work was so prolific. But most fans love it to this day. I sill get that zeppelin buzz every time I hear fool....bonzos shuffle groove and the midtune samba breakdown is still talked about as one of the most interesting drum parts ever created. And even though Jimmy was not in top form.....he blows it out as his usual self. But that album is the end of it. After that the music died.... as Don McLean sang....I think zeppelin was smart enough to respect Bonham and let the zeppelin legacy and mystique live on the way they have. A few performances here and there and the show with Jason Bonham was excellent but no formal tour as zeppelin. I'm sad about that but also totally ok with it. Long live the mighty zeppelin.

I fell in love with this album after Hurricane Frederick knocked out our power for 2 1/2 weeks in 1979 and all we had to listen to was a radio. The songs from this album were in pretty heavy rotation and I just kind of had the music implanted in my 8 year old brain. I kind of forgot about the music into my middle school years, then Fell in love with Robert Plant's solo tunes in High School. When I rediscovered Led Zep and In Through the Out Door, it was like I had found an old friend that I hadn't seen in 10 years. The album is now my favorite of ALL the studio albums.

    My older brother bought this album and I remember listening to it in junior high. Being into Zep already as well as alternative and prog rock, I loved it immediately. It melded the new technology with the deep well of soul that Zep draws from. Another interesting fact about the album cover inner sleeve is that it was chemically treated to turn color when water was applied to it making each inner sleeve a unique water color artwork. Just genius.

    Thanks for putting this together, JCM! I'm another in the long line of kids who first discovered Zeppelin from an older sibling only to go down the rabbit hole on my own as a 12-year-old kid with his first guitar in hand. I was super fortunate that when I picked up the vinyl for In Through The Out Door, it was still being sold in the brown paper bag which I have to this day and am exceptionally grateful for. This would have been around 1986 and all the Zep vinyl was still available - gosh how I loved getting my hands on the Physical Graffiti LP and my Zep III even had the spinning wheel so you can see all the different artwork that was put on the cover. You just can't replicate that with CDs and definitely not nowadays with digital. Spinning the album's on the record player and listening to all these classic tracks from the world's greatest band while holding the album's liner notes in hand? Yeah - I will cherish those memories forever.
    As far as In Through The Out Door goes, I had a friend in middle school that absolutely was nuts for In The Evening. I remember we would just sit there dumbstruck whenever Page came in with the whammy bar at the beginning of the solo. And those steel drums at the intro! And JPJ! What's there to say? This was JPJ's baby, and it would have been amazing to see where the band could have taken things afterwards. Poor Bonzo - G-d rest his soul and may he forever be laying down the groove.

    This was cool and you have a good story- and you absolutely kick ass on the guitar. As for In Through the Out Door, it's a shame your research didn't yield a lot of information. Honestly, I would think there would be volume upon volume of information online about this album. I was 12 years old when it was released in 1979 and I remember it being a BIG deal with lots of hype, publicity everywhere you looked, excellent reviews, and "All My Love" and "In the Evening" getting unending airplay every time you turned on FM radio. Mind you, this is before the days of the internet, so all that publicity I spoke of was radio, TV, magazines, word of mouth, and advertisements/displays in music stores. But it was, indeed, everywhere. Bottom line is I don't think this album has gotten the bad rap you seem to think it has. All these decades later, it may not be looked at with the same reverence as IV or II, but I don't think there is any Led Zep fan that doesn't consider it a classic.

    A firm understanding of the nature of the personalities of Led Zeppelin is really necessary to understand the evolution of their sound. The first two albums were, of course, blues based, a reflection of their backgrounds in blues music. Beyond that, it's important to realize that all four members of the band were never content to continue playing the same thing over and over. They didn't have a "niche". They were constantly exploring and pushing the envelope. It was only natural that more synth driven sounds would appear as time wore on. To me that path seemed only logical. Robert has frequently stated in interviews that if he isn't doing something new, he's not interested. It's the main reason that he was not on board with the reunion tour. He doesn't want to be a jukebox act. With this in mind, you can sit and listen to Led Zeppelin to In Through the Out Door in chronological orde and see a natural progression which is quite natural, especially if you are aware of the events that were affecting the personal lives of the members of the band at the time.

    • @Vaptomwen
      @Vaptomwen Год назад +1

      It may be cynical but true that Robert revisits Led Zeppelin whenever he has a new project as Page once said , being more than aware of status as part of Zeppelin to promote sales. A Led Zepplin reunion wouldn’t offer him much , but he’d have fat chance of having made it solo without them. JPJ is very easy to overlook ,but with Bonzo had added to Pages intricacies so much , the intricacies & subtlety of which is the one thing I find cover bands usually miss so much.

    • @rbilleaud
      @rbilleaud Год назад

      @@Vaptomwen well this is true, but it wasn't always like that. I have an interview with him on David Letterman shortly after he released his first solo album, and he was very cagey when discussing what he referred to as "that other band", not wanting to even mention Led Zeppelin by name. Over the years I think he's come to terms with it. And as you noted, he does frequently borrow from the catalog. It's been an interesting journey from where he was to where he is now.

    • @rbilleaud
      @rbilleaud Год назад +1

      @@Vaptomwen I think his personal relationship with Bonham ran deeper than most people realize. He was deeply affected by his passing. I can pretty much guarantee that he was the one who ultimately said he was unwilling to go on without him. Not to sound callous or imply that he was not loved by Page and JPJ, but I think with their time as studio musicians behind them and adjusting to different lineups, they would have been willing to give it a go had Plant been on board. Remember too that Plant was just 20 when he joined the band, the same age as Bonham. Not that Page and Jones were that much older, but I think perhaps there was a stronger kinship between the two of them.

    I've read ITTOD described as "Plant's first solo album", and that sounds about right to me. Page and Bonham were reportedly too out of it to influence the sound, hence the soft, synthy blahness of much of the album. Would Led Zep have returned to greatness if Bonham had lived? Sadly, we'll never know.

    Watching interviews with Robert Plant is so instructive on understanding the evolution of Led Zeppelin. There was a constant push to continue to move forward. There was no desire to revisit ground they had already covered, and that was mostly Plant who insisted on that. And you see that throughout their albums. In that way they were different from almost any other band out there. Understanding that makes comprehending In Through the Out Door so much easier.

    Fool In The Rain is and always be one of the greatest LZ tracks. The Almighty Bonzo is untouchable on that one. All My Love is one I used to learn to play the drums on. That said, I will admit to sometimes overlooking the other tracks on ITHOD. I have listened to LZ since I was a kid and this doc makes me want to revisit this album. It's like looking up an old friend you haven't seen or thought of in a while. Thank you. Can't wait to see the other episodes.

      There were keg parties EVERY weekend, and the album would be played, and i would go up to the turntable and say: is that YOUR album? You wanna see something COOL?.
      AND id find a sponge and show em-
      It NEVER failed to amaze!!!

When I was growing up, all the tough guys in the area were into Led Zeppelin. These tough guys put me onto Led Zeppelin. The first albums I bought were The Song Remains The Same & Volume Three. Since then, I've accumulated a massive collection, not only of Led Zeppelin, but also of all of their solo and collaborative projects. I also purchased scores of bootlegs and literally dozens of books and other publications
