A DIY solution easy to make at home.
Use Citric Acid for cleaning espresso machine as shown in the video.
Very easy to do at home. All natural and very cheap way to keep your espresso machine clean.
This will clean your Espresso machine and you can use this same solution to descale your washing machine too!
Alternatively you could use vinegar but citric acid is much stronger than vinegar.

If you want to test if you rinced your machine enough, just put a bit of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in the glass after running it. If it foams, there is still acid in the machine.
Ahhh smart
Dragos,
After following your video on how to clean espresso machines, my 25 year old Starbuck Barrista machine. by Saeco, is working as good as new. Many thanks my friend.
Those Starbucks Barista machines are the best. Total beasts.
I’m still using mine too!!!
tried this and it basically worked. But I used lime juice and vinegar. The baked in coffee ground loosened up until it became less full of grinds and crud. Thanks for this.
Be careful with vinegar. When it reaches boiling point it releases acetic acid into the air and isn’t good for your respiratory system or eyes. Just make sure the area is well ventilated.
it also cleans the handle which has a lot of coffee goo inside it :)
Thank u so much, I struggled so much to find a video that made sense! Finally I can have coffee again 😂
I came here to get the rough idea, didn’t have the vinegar so used a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in the tank, then flushed it through with a full tank on both the steam nozzle and coffee extractor.
The coffee had just started to develop an after taste. Water went from yellow to crystal clear. Thank you for the advice. Was going mad as I didn’t think there was a way to clean it but didn’t think the obvious would work. The wand definitely needed a good clean. It’s like a jet now compared to before
i was wondering if it would work with bicarbonate aswell. thats the closest thing i have here to do the job
If you dont dissemble the machine(mainly the filter) no good work can be done, the main problem is still there as the minerals cannot come out through the filter.
You may want to change the group head gasket. It is leaking from the sides.
be aware citric acid react with the aluminum walls of the water boiler. Use this method only if you boiler is made from brass.
what do you reccomand for aluminium?
@@dss915 Vinegar.
Vinegar works too but better to mix citric acid 5% or buy pre-mixed pods (also citric acid) made especially for cleaning espresso machines.
Dragos Ion you still recomand citric acid for aluminium? Doesnt citric acid provoke corosion?
Buy a mix made for yours, I would try to open it and see how bad it is. Maybe change it.
I put a link in the pinned comment for descalers on amazon.
Thank you very much Ivan Drago !. greetings from Argentina friend. 🇦🇷🇦🇷
Much better than buying the descaler tablets.
I thought vinegar was the preferred descaling solution
acetic acid can attack metals and rubber orings.
Update: worked great, coffee tastes way better now
Thank you very much I was struggle to cleaning the boiler. Big thanks 😘
I’ve done this with vinegar for 2 days and had no results , I’ve then tried it with the citric acid yesterday and had some really good results - was even getting more coffee than before. However this morning again no / little coffee is coming out, any suggestions what to do next ?? Thanks
Try decalcifier/tablets too, link in description. Citric acid is more clean but decalcifier works too.
Just bought a used machine and the coffee tasted like shit. Excited to try this. Thanks!!
Wow, so u just told, that the cheap citric acid works well same way than other premium expensive branded products i have to try out thanks!!
Yes, citric acid is just that but concentration % can be harder to get right.
I'd say start with a lower concentration first rinse it and then see if the flow is better.
5% citric acid is what you really should use every time.
Higher only for shorter time - rinse after few minutes instead of 20-30 min.
It's up to you.
Any citric acid 5% made for coffee machine cleaning / espresso will be fine.
No need for fancy extras.
@@IONHowTo The truth is, EVERY branded product is based on cheap acids, alkali or oxidizers available in hardware stories or internet shopping or pharmacy :)
Thanks once again gl
Thank you. thank you for your wonderful help to clean my coffee machine. very grateful
Thank you
1 mistake you made, before you start with the acid, you take the screw out from under the discharge component, remove the seal and screen, it gets packed with coffee, I use a toothbrush, underneath, clean the screen,.it can be left out during the acid process.
how long should i make espresso after descaling it?
Very Helpful and kind of fun! Thanks
Even after cleaning, the one hole from the handle/filter holder is kinda clogged and the water doesn't flow as good as on the other hole. What should I do?
Pump not working
The pump is working probably, you need to dissemble the machine a little bit (filter with screw comes off, then the other hexagonical too, turn on the water and the salts will come out)
Just what I needed, I'm starting a bartending job and I didn't know what to use for cleaning
Do not do this for a high end espresso machine! They make the cleaning chemical Cafiza on Amazon and you put it right in the portifilter and flush the system that way!
@@skylarwirth5935 it's a small coffee shop so they use a regular machine, but thank you.
Can you use vinegar instead of citric acid?
You could but need to run more water thru it after so your coffee doesn't taaste/smell like vinegar
What about if its totally clpgged?? No water coming out
Wow if the pump makes buzzing noises, try this trick:
Open rhe steam wand full on.
Put cups under coffee and steam.
Start the machine and hopefully it was just a problem with air.
When water runs out and air gets into they system, rhe pump won't work but opening the steam attachment fixed it for me.
If it's not that, put citric acid in the water container and try starting it once or twice then let it sit a few hours and try again.
Try with 2-3 hours between attempts until water flows nicely!
Hope it helps!
What about doing a back flush?
Great Help
Thank you, and I love the accent. :)
Thank You Sir, yes it did help 🙏
Im watching this cuz I tried cleaning machine, now no water at all is coming out, can someone please help
Try to follow the steps and you could also use a shallow container / plate to soark the coffee out port with citric acid solution - it will dissolve the limestone there.
All this if you hear the pump making a moise trying to make pressure.
If there is no noie from the pump, the machine os broken. Ask the shop to repair it or return it if you can.
@@IONHowTo there is noise, and sounds like it's trying to pump, I just took the whole machine apart. It's something to do with air bubbles I need to find something to bleed the air out
@@al-dorifto1631 thats an easy fix usually. Before starting it, set it in froth mode and open the milk froth fully. The pressure should go thru the milk froth stick. Close it and it will go thru the coffee maker pod if it's not blocked.
@@IONHowTo mine is pretty simple I only got a water option and a froth option, not pressure option
@@al-dorifto1631 use the froth option and open it if it has a pressure regulator for the froth stick. Air should come out if you do that then green water when using the cleaning steps.
Pleas watch the video carefully
Thanks for the video, how high do you fill your coffee in the pods? I am now tamping it and fill it halfway
Halfway is fine
Can you use lemon juice instead of citric acid ?
If you filter it I guess you could
Thank you very much
How often celaning the machine ?
When you notice the coffee takes longer to make but ideally every 6 months
Con I used Baking soda instead of the substitution that you recommend?
Great video!! Thank you!
My problem is that no water is coming through.
If the pump is buzzing try to do this but let it sit longer with the solution. If there's no buzzing from the pump, take it for repair or new machine time.
I noticed i did smth wrong. The instruction for my coffee machine says to make steam with the solution. But everyone i see they get out water from the steam pipe. Am i gonna die now? 😅
Or...use vinegar
can i use vinegar instead of citric acid?
Yes and no pls read the comments.
Edit: yes but need to rinse more - smell.
I imagine you could do the same with vinegar
Several manufacturers specify cleaning with vinegar. That is one flavor I don't want anywhere near my coffee. I've used citric acid for years and am always impressed how awful the water looks when I start the cleaning process. I usually use about 1 full tank with the citric acid solution (it gets clear near the end) and then rinse with a tank of just water.
Like he says, clean both the water that goes to the coffee grounds AND the steam tube that froths the milk. The end result is good.
Now if I could just find how to replace the part of the machine that heats the water. Over time the seams spring leaks and I need to buy a new unit as I don't see how to replace that water heating unit.
Im surprised those glasses didn’t break because of the heat.
They didn't break because they were not cold. Already hot glass won't break but if you have a room temp or cold glass and do this it might break yeah.
Can i use vinegar??
You could but citric acid has no after-taste. They are available pre-mixed.
I tried it with vinegar and it didn't work on mine.
Will videgar work?
Vinegar would leave a slight taste for a while.
Best is citric acid mixed or premixed for espresso machines or espresso machine descalers if you prefer that.
3:30 Mixed and its Must to be by " Finger " 🤣🤦♂️
My god that machine was gross
ro? DA
How often should you be cleaning your machine?
It's up to you. Usually when you see flow decreases or once every few months or even monthly.
Thank you
Thank you so much
Great video!!! Thank you
