“A lot of gold in that mine” you are absolutely right!! Lizzy are one of the most criminally underrated bands around. Their live performances are always great. Keep it up lads 🤘🏻

Saw Thin Lizzy at the Pink Pop festival in the Netherlands in the 70's. One of the best live rockbands, and one of the loudest 😅.
Brian Downey is a great drummer, if you missed that.
    Nice reaction, guys .
    Hello from the Netherlands. 😁👍👊

Thin Lizzy was possibly the best band in the world at this time. This was when they were on tour with Queen. This video only showed up last year and any footage of Phil and Gary together is golden. They didn't owe much, if anything to Kiss, who never meant much in the UK. The common denominator for both bands was Slade, who Thin Lizzy supported on tour in their early days. That was very much a baptism of fire for the band, and Lynott was told he had to raise his game if he wanted the band to remain on the tour. The sign at the back was not Lizzy's regular logo, so this must have belonged to the show.

This is some great info, thank you! And, I should say Thin Lizzy certainly didn't owe much to Kiss - I was mainly talking about the bombs in the beginning of the song, and some of the lights and effects.

Yep - saw them back up Queen - I was there for Queen, along with my HS BFF.. but gotta say that I was blown away by Phil Lynott.. almost made me forget my first love-Brian May... but just until Queen took the stage... I was a very impressionable 16-yr-old... lol

So true about the Slade support slot and those drums clear blue Ludwig Vistalites must have been a rental job for the show as Brian Downey played Gretsch and not longer after this moved to Rogers drums, good comment mate! ☝

@@batphink2655 Good spot with the drums. I didn't know exactly when Brian changed to Rogers, but I assumed that was the kit used on all the Live and Dangerous recordings, i.e. from the beginning of 1976.

Chinatown is an epic song. Twin guitars first exposure. Never looked back. Including Priest, Night Ranger, etc. Good formula if you have two guys that can play. Lot of good players out there even back in the day.

Thin Lizzy is 100 times the band Kiss ever were ...if anyone stole anything it was Kiss stealing from Lizzy

    • @AdrianFink
      @AdrianFink 9 месяцев назад +3

Sorry, I never meant to imply Kiss was a better band than Thin Lizzy, or that Thin Lizzy stole anything from Kiss or anyone else. Kiss was much more of a money-making experiment (that worked well) than Lizzy, and there were lots of other bands using fire, bombs, etc in their shows - after all this video is from 1977. Not that Kiss were the first band to use fireworks, but they got famous for it, people noticed, and a lot of bands used some of these pyrotechnic ideas as a result. That's all I'm saying.

DID you see the gig where Lizzy supported Journey 'Gig on the Green' or something apparently Steve Smith was playin his drums along with Brian Downey to throw him off and Gary Moore was pissed off, talk about jealous or highly competitive? I used to perform and that would have gotten me furiosuly mad!

Phil had been dressing like this for a while and the band had been together longer than Kiss so not sure they were influenced by them at all. Plus, have to say that Lizzy were a much better band.

TL influenced by Kiss? that seems ridiculous to me.. they were SO much better! (don't get the comparison at all...) I can think of at least a half-dozen amazing songs by TL.. and probably about the same number of formulaic, forgettable songs by "Kiss"..

Thats the 70's. pure and simple, rock and roll blasting on your car radios, not alot of bull shit laws, could smoke and drink at 18, and the music you heard was actually people with talent that practiced 2-3 hrs a day since they were 12yrs old on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards. now it's a bunch of fucking garbage

@@ronnienose8608 Yep! They concentrated on albums and Phil was awesome enough where if they released a single, the B-side was usually an unreleased song. He did not want people spending their money on two songs that are already on the album.

You sound like an American. Being from the UK, where Thin Lizzy had a lot of hits, I could say the same about Van Halen or Aerosmith, or any number of American bands. It has nothing to do with quality or legacy either way.

Gary Moore was only in the band for the first 4 months of 77. Roberton was back by July 77 . He did the bad Reputation tour which Produced the live and dagerous album . Mid 77 to mid 78 was their Peak and Robertson was there for all of that Peak. Robbo getting fired marked the beginnig of the downward spiral . Gary Moore Joined full time in July of 78 but by then Phil and Scot were already starting to slip . Black Rose is a great album but its not as good as the albums that came before it and the shows with Gary were Great but there was a raggedness to the sound and they were not as tightt. Phil and Scot continued to deterirorate and by August 79 Moore left due to the bands decline in performance qualify and heavy drug use .
The Snowy White years were a Thim lizzy Parody and that wasn't his fault but he wasn't the right kind of Player for Lizzy and Phil and Scot were not in good shape . The 1980 shows were pretty Solid but alot of thw 1981 shows were really rough although there is a BBC recoded show from 81 that is very good but i believe it was recorded over a couple of shows and they picked the best versions of each song so the BBC show is probably a mixture of 2 shows .
There is a Video of a 1981 German festival show and its pretty bad .

Although Black Rose is my favourite of Lizzy's studio albums, I totally agree that the band was tighter with Robbo, and Lynott's writing was more consistent. I think the Renegade album was pretty solid and there were a few decent tracks on Chinatown, but the BBC show you mention sounds like the band firing on all cylinders. The version of Don't Believe a Word from that recording is probably my favourite version of the song. The German show is not easy to watch, but I think it was Snowy's demeanour on stage, rather than what he played, that let the side down.

Kiss were not the pioneers of pyrotechnics and big signs. Pyrotechnics were being used in concerts in Europe before Kiss started using the. Pink Floyd are concided the innovators of pyrotechnics in live music performance. Pink Floyd were recognised as the first and then followed by other British bands like The Who and Queen before Kiss. It is more likely that Thin Lizzy influenced by the British music scene rather than Kiss.
