Big Soul MMBxMOB - Thank you for being one of the few Reaction Programs featuring Roy Buchanan. I love your fearless devotion to playing music of diversity and styles, and your commentary is always insightful and engaging. Thank you for all your hard work.
Roy is my favorite guitarist and I was fortunate enough to see him 6 times, and even met him once for a brief second. First thing important to note about Roy is that until his later years (80's), he plugged his Tele straight into his amp. So where most other guitarists rely on effects and mixing, Roy produced it all himself. Or courwe, when he started they didn't have effects so he pretty much invented most of his tricks, sounds, and fireworks. I firmly believe that he influenced tons of early stars much like Van Halen did for all the metal guys that followed. Jeff Beck, The Stones, Jimi, Robbie Robertson, the list goes on. I suggest focusing on his first album, Second Album, Live Stock, That's What I am Here For, Loading Zone and You're Not Alone. You want to hear Roys Bluz, The Messiah Will Come Again, Five String Blues, I'm Evil and Hey Joe. The live video from Austin is pretty good. You can also do an interesting comparison between Roy, Lonnie Mack, and Albert Collins on the Carnegie Hall show. Roy's sound is for up when they jam together on Further on up the Road, but its easy to see that those two can't play on the same court as Roy.
This song is "When A Guitar Plays The Blues". He was one of the unknown greats. Thanks for playing this and it is a bummer that the mix sucks cause he has a very cool vocal style. He died in '88 so this is before cell phones/cameras.
Btw.. many times Roy didnt have a set band. He would tell the club to get a drummer and bass player on call to do the gig. No prior meeting,No rehearsal just plug in and play.
I'm guessing the "echo" you are referring to is a combination of the spring reverb from the amplifier, and the recording picking up the natural room reverb sound in the club. It's not a professional quality recording. Or you may be referring to the volume swells he's doing by riding the volume knob of his guitar. Not totally sure exactly what you meant.
The thing about Roy was that he achieved the most sound with the least rig of anybody. Mostly just Roy, his guitar, and an amp. All that sound was simply Roy playing like a fucking boss. Obviously an influence on many that came after. If you don't hear some Jeff Beck in that intro, you need more Jeff Beck (And Roy) in your life.
I’ve been binge watching your videos all morning starting with your Rage Against the Machine reactions 🔥 I like your wide range of music reactions. I heard you say on a few videos that rap, hip-hop, and R&B was your thing growing up. Have you heard of Harry Mack? If you haven’t, I strongly recommend. Hands down the greatest off the top, freestyle rapper of all time. Yeah I said it ! Look up Harry Mack Omegle Bars 45 or 37. Can’t go wrong with any of his many videos but these are my personal favorites. You will not be disappointed and you can thank me later. Happy Holidays !
hi Anthony, Merry Christmas! u asked abt. the echo effect coming from his guitar: 1.) early guitarists would take the mechanical-rotary from a Hammond B2 organ, and incorporate it, complete with the horns, into their speaker cabinet, to produce “reverb,” and later, they took the “Leslie speaker(s)” from the Hammonds B2 / 3’s, to get a broader range of reverb, and wah-wah, and could control the speed of the cycle, sine, tones, gain and sustain. some even incorporated the vacuum tubes, to gain more control over the sine waves, which was much more complex in nature, controlling all aspects of the sound - including gain, resonance, tones, and reverb. 2.) the wah-wah pedal: the wah-wah pedals were electronically designed controllers, that (attempted) reproduced the sounds, including the reverb wah-wah, sustain, gain, and tones that they’d previously been getting from the Hammond B2 mechanical-rotary, and horns, and later, with the vacuum tubes, and Leslie speakers that were both taken from the B2 / 3 Hammond organs; the pedals virtually took over, except in some circumstances where the guitarist just preferred the Hammond parts over the pedals. but, the pedals kept adding electronic functions, and now are placed together in strings and blocks of pedals, each pedal achieving different functions available to today’s guitarists. I know enough to be dangerous abt. these options - an electronic engineering tech could go deeper into this musical scenario. good vid, great reaction @Anthony!
Amps will have a reverb dial that can simulate the echo in various acoustic conditions, say a huge stone church. EDIT: I believe he was playing harmonics for that high pitched passage. Very lightly touch the string and pluck it. Roy was famous for his guitar magician like tricks. He had a lot of them.
Yes... he grew up right up.the road from where i live. The greatest guitarists of all time .. call him the best.. it takes modern guitar players 5 pedals to recreate what he would do with his fingers and the knobs.. and he died under bad circumstances. .. hung himself in Jail. Some say he was killed.
Many ways to get that effect, reverb on an amp is one way for sure but there are also petals that can do it he was also using the volume knob to do what we call volume swells. Ehcoplex effects also delay pedals. Daivvd Gilmore of Pink Flloyd employs dealy a lot.
Actually you asked an excellent and insightful question. As I recall, Roy used no pedals at all, and typical amps of the period had no onboard effects (with some exceptions). It's possible he had such an amp, though it sounds more like a natural delay arising from using two amps. Also noteworthy is his use of the volume knob as an effect; he, Rory Gallagher and Jeff Beck were masters at this. Unfortunately only Beck is still with us.
Hes using his right pinky to manipulate the volume and tone controls as he picks and bends the strings Only Jeff Beck has been able to pick up Roys skills they became friends and that ability that technique is impossible to master as your picking and moving up the fret board Incredible concentration
Roy hardly ever used pedals and effects, only later in his career he did some more. Roy got everything straight from the guitar/amp. He generally used a Fender Vibrolux amp with volume and tone to the max! And he influenced that with the knob on his guitar.....with his pinkie. For the 'wah wah' effect he used the tone knob.....actually getting the 'wah wah effect' 10 years prior before guitar pedals were introduced. Roy was not amused when Jimi Hendrix ran with the pedal effects.....those were Roy's sounds (without pedals). As the stories go Hendrix bowed out from a guitar duel with Roy. But eventually Roy could appreciate Hendrix and has covered his songs quite a bit. Roy also made cuts in the paper cones of speakers to get distortion, a trick The Kinks had used before too. Roy had more trademarks/capabilities that are actually too difficult to put into words as a non-musican/guitar player. Roy really IS the most underrated player ever.
I'm glad you discovered this guy. He is my all-time favorite unknown guitarist! This dude imagination connected to the universe crazily! If you want a better quality video to react to, react to this whole concert right here is only about 40 minutes long but it's worth every minute. You'll get a great understanding on how great he was with this concert. ruclips.net/video/v4e2VgycfSw/видео.htmlsi=v2HEJJZg6y7vFJB7
Another awesome guitarist is Estas Tonne(pronounced S-Tahs Toe-Nay). Acoustic guitar, street musician. Ukrainian. Look for his “The Song of The Golden Dragon.”, or just type in JESUS PLAYING GUITAR here on RUclips. This guy rocks. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas ❤🎄♥️
The echo effect is just roy rolling the volume knob up and down with his pinkie finger while he plays, it's an amazing skill he uses to perfection
That technique is known as, "volume swelling."
Roy is the Best for me. I saw him 1985 here in Germany. Thank YOU!👍
Love Roy Buchanan The Messiah will come again live is a must see ....
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year too you all ❤️🎉
I laughed so hard when he said his last name LMAO.

I learned of him when I was the blues DJ for a college radio station. Sadly, it was 4 years after he passed.
Roy is my al time no 1 guitarist everyone else can fight for no 2

Check out, Roy Buchanan‘s cover of can I change my mind. Tyrone Davis’s old soul hits song.

I think that his BEST album, is "Live Stock."
Check IT, out.

Imagine being so good you turn down playing guitar for the rolling Stones and having Jeff Beck making a tribute song because of your influence
And Gary Moore

Looks like somebody in the audience was recording this on their Cell Phone. He is much better than this recording.

Roy was fingers to guitar to Amp! No pedals.. all in his fingers. He was a genius. Jeff Beck and many others were influenced by him.
