The way to write a winning show is by writing a contra part that is just as nice to listen to as the trumpet part (honestly in this case mellophone part)
That was amazing...being right there on the field with you. It not only shows your skills as a musician but the conditioning it takes to pull it off. One of my favorite DCI performances of all times!!
@@maxalain9948 right?? My highschool band had 1 tuba player against 60 band members (who didn't know how to balance correctly) back in 2016, and he could still play over the band throughout every dynamic, and blend correctly too. But then again, they could be mic'd just so the entire band itself could play louder and not worry about balancing to the tubas
Did all the other tubas 46 years before them have terrible tone quality? Not bashing SCV, cuz they still won band, but I feel that a solution to a non-issue. I still like hearing the sweat in your playing if that makes sense. I certainly *see* the sweat with their 3:5 195 bpm backflips though, so that's always good.
8/12 tubas were micd. It was to provide more clarity in our part, which was very cool and very technical, without us working super hard and not have to deal with staging in certain parts of the show.
I'm pretty sure he was an alternate and they let him play on the drum feature since it was encore run, if you watch high cam videos of the encore you can see 13 tubas instead of 12 during the feature and then it goes right back to 12.
Oddish question, what's the visibility like with those horns? My corps is probably getting a full Yamaha line and I'm curious as to what it's like to play them. I'm a tad impatient when it comes to being able to play a new horn lol
I'm not in corps but I march Yamahas at my high school and you really can't see much out of the left side at all but the bell doesn't take up the front of your line of sight as much as you would think.
please no my corps was on System Blue contras this summer, but seeing as every single one broke after only a single summer, we’re leaving SB. I was on the only King in the 9 person contra line and I really wish we were going back to them cause those things play like a dream
please no if you ever get a chance to play a 4 valve King, take it immediately. I never had a single problem with the horn outside of taking a dent out of the bell when I managed to clip a bump on one of our fields due to the entire brass line basically throwing themselves down on one knee during part of our show. The 4 valve contras weigh about 28lbs but they’re so nicely balanced that it feels way lighter than that.
What are those pouches they are wearing? It kinda reminds me of the power supply for the solo mics, but way to many of them have it. And why do some have it and some don't?
"WE JUST WON BAND!!!"
Narrator: "And they had indeed just won band"
10:28
Drum corps is just one of those things out there unlike any other
"IS YOUR CORP READY?"
"NOOO!"
"WE ARE NOT READY"
Imagine just saying "sorry dog our corps isn't ready my bad"
Drum Major just leaves
Did they mean to look destressed or not
@@johnna1234
yeah it’s kinda like a pre show which has only choreography
The way to write a winning show is by writing a contra part that is just as nice to listen to as the trumpet part (honestly in this case mellophone part)
I love it “WE JUST WON BAND!!!” Makes me so happy whenever I watch it I loved this show and the contras were fire. Great show!
8:49 "YOU KNOW WHAT COMES NEXT"
HORN SNAP
HELL YEA!!!!
I just can't enough of SCV18. This is one amazing show. Your musicianship is outstanding.
This was my drum major! What’s up Gage!-Jesse
The snap sounded like Iron man landing. Jesus dear god I need more...MORE I SAY
Yeah I want to know how that even happened! There isn’t a metal plate on their shoulder or anything
@@baconcat2458 That's just how a really hard snap up sounds lmao
BaconCat245 I’m like 99% sure it’s their hand making the noise as they switch hands, not the tuba hitting their shoulder.
Sean O'Leary no, in scv they snap their third valve slides in, not too sure what the contras do though.
*club sound intensifies*
Your drum majors are actually the greatest XD
I met one of them (right side facing the feild) and he was an awesome dude
10:34 is the best part. As a contra player, I must learn this. It sounds so amazing!!!!
I'm a trumpet in marching. But this is my favorite brass feature.
now, that's a tuba feature ladies and gentlemen
Hell yeah.
give me the notes after they play the low C, i wanna learn it badlyy as a tuba player myself
@@zimrcia2817 there's a few transcriptions out there somewhere

That low note at the end is satisfying
2:55 idk why but I just love that part
Loved that you had the extra tuba player out on the field with you during Club Sound! Great show!
"Remember lads... nO RUSSIAN!"
I can only imagine how they felt when they finished that run.
7:40 I can recognize that duet anywhere, love it
11:53 that’s honestly my favorite part in the contra line. Goosebumps every time! 🥹
not a big fan of the mic on all the contras, but i guess it’s better then synths playing the bass part?
It's hard to play contra or any type of Tuba Loud and with a good tone.If we play too loud our sounds is really edgy.
Understandable I play sousa and it’s the same situation. It still feels a bit cheaty
@Micah Lall-Trail I'm pretty sure they were only two valved, right? Either way that would be pretty sick!
Contra/ Tuba lines got up to around 16 members but now looks like 10-12 is more common.
Alex Witmer I don’t mind it too much. Allows a much more consistent and natural tone with much less effort, there’s worse to worry about in dci
I love the tuba parts so much and thank god for a tuba player from scv this year put a tuba cam up
8:52 that sounded painful
8:48 “yeet”
THAT WAS MY DRUM MAJOR!!🤩
At around 12:28 just the sound of the euphonium zooming by cracked me up
Actually it was at 12:25
@@papasquat5549 It's funny as fuck buy when you hear it so much you just get used to it
8:52 ohhhhhh is this why you guys were mic'd
I think it was for 1030. Instead of having synth play the bass line they could just amplify pure sexy through their system
10:34 is my favorite part for the tubas
I still just wanna know why that one tuba player just gets off the field after the feature in the closure.
Benjamin Byham He was our alternate, we wanted to give him an opportunity to perform in front of the finals crowd!
Gage Cope that is so cute oh my god
@@gagecope3140 that's so cool
That’s it. I’m gonna learn this part. You can’t stop me. It’s too good.
the guy can pull up a contra faster than I can pull up a trombone
That’s kinda pathetic
no amount of waterboarding could get me to say this
@@leopirdas6577damn bruh
11:32 is probably one of the hardest tuba lines timing wise and marching wise too.
I'm gonna be honest. I searched this for that one part. We all know what part I'm talking about
The horns up?
Did you ever hear us yell your name at San Antonio? The Crosses asked us to.
10:04 mw2 reference
Very nice show! Heard you are the drum major for our school. One of your contras is over here helping us with our show.
Bruh I can hear the mello lick at the beginning 😍😍
“you know what comes next”
Are all the Contras mic’d?
@John Johnson Or they could just play loud

So the first minute was butts butts butts......lol smh
This makes me want to march Vangaurd SO BAD
Same I love this urgh
What happened to the contra player at 11:08 at the front getting off the field?
He was an alternate who played the feature on the field at the encore
The idea of all those grass stains is making my OCD go crazy

But the Turf in ur shoes tho...
That’s not grass and you don’t have OCD.

Why does the one person put down a tuba on that front side line right after the drum feature
It was an alternate who just played to feature at the encore
