    I've seen much larger waters sailing here around Kauai. One big difference is this water is warm ! And we may be in a remote area, but not like what you are headed for.
    The local conditions preclude much 'pleasure' boating here. Its just too rough to be relaxing.
    I hope you are staying 'tied off' ! I've been 'over-board' due to failed hardware ! (the music from the movie 'Jaws' rises in your ears about the time your butt hits the water).
    I had a crewman who was at the helm go over-board. It was very late on a beautiful afternoon. As I sailed away from him I failed to realize that the low angle of the sun would completely make him invisible as I came about on the reverse heading. When I realized how impaired my observational ability would be, I just started yelling at the top of my lungs. (''I want to hear something from you''!!!). About that time his bobbing head appeared out of the golden glare and he was recovered with out much of a struggle.
    Remember, bad things happen fast. It's always better to plan ahead for the worst, so, when it happens, you are as prepared as you can be.
    I grew up alpine skiing, so the 'out of control/going too fast' of heavy weather was always met with some big laughs. I finally got a broken lumbar vertebrae in a pitchpole.
    I'm still laughing about that. My crew were all shot into the air/water. I was fastened to the boat, and my restraint inflicted a whiplash injury when the big crash (running down wind overpowered) happened. We came up the back of a large swell, and could not bare-off because we were already over powered and sailing in a down wind luff to slow down. The swell was stacked up high prior to breaking to a white-cap. We dove into the trough and the world changed with a bang.

    I turned the agressiveness down on my autopilot. It saved a lot of energy. I am not sure that can be done in really wild seas but in calmer times it means you don't track a straight line so much as oscillate side to side a little more. I think that it saves wear on the rudder a good bit.

    The speed of your boat got my attention. Getting into double digit speeds is very impressive. After looking at your information, it sounds like you raced sailboats in the Great Lakes. Can you talk a little about your boat? Did your experience racing help guide your boat selection? It seems like the boat is faster than most other monohull cruising sailboats. Was there a tradeoff between performance and comfort? Is there anything that you would have done differently?

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Год назад +2

      Hi David! We have done quite a bit of racing. Performance and comfort will always be a tradeoff unless you have Gunboat money. If you have the right attitude you will be happy with whatever you choose. You have great questions, but there isn't enough room in a RUclips comment to answer them all properly. We will put these on the list for a future video or blog post!

  • @Cptnbond

    Great video as usual. I kind of get a feeling being onboard together with you. A somewhat more technical alternative, when you waited five minutes before deciding on the sail change (at the end of the episode) - can you use the electronic barometer you have onboard? Today's electronic sensors are extremely sensitive, typically around 0.1 mbar. Thus, if no indicative pressure isobars approaching, no change in wind - thus do sail change. Maybe something to test out if it works on Sweet Ruca. Cheers.

    • @SailingSweetRuca

    Great stuff again. Are you using a boom brake or preventer during the night? If the autopilot goes cracy I think boom brake is better solution.

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Год назад +1

      Hi Topc :-) Thanks! We use both preventer and brake depending on the situation. Here's our take, both have their pros and cons. For at night we prefer the preventer for running deep downwind in waves. The brake is excellent for gybing and slowing boom movements while manuevering in a sea way.

      Hi Bill, we will have do a full video or blog post about that at some point. A lot if things learned. Roxy is sort of a magic dog and came to us at 4 years old, already potty trained, and responds really well to training. It took some time for her to realize it was OK to go on the deck, and now she has her system down. The key is taking time, treats, and positive reinforcement.

      I had a Bull terrier/Bull Mastiff cross living with me on my boat for yrs. He just went aft and doo'd on the stern deck then gave me a coupla barks. Bucket of water. All gone. His biggest problem was running up and down side deck (Port) Then through the forward netting. Chasing the bloody dolphins.
      When they were around I had a Heavy Duty life jacket I put on him. Had a large loop sewn into topside and a loong boat hook handy on Stern Quarter to scoop him up b4 having to tack boat. Spare (Kite) Halyard to lift out a 43+Kilo wringing wed mongrel.
      Cats were easier. Long towel on stern Quarter at night, and let him know where it is.
      Have you seen how fast a cat can swim to the boat and race up the wet towel. THEN jump IN your bunk with you all soaking. at 3 or 4 in the morning. Grrr.

      @@mackcarson6729 Thanks, Mack. Will have to see how it goes when we launch this summer. We’ll probably spend the summer day sailing in the Swedish Archipelago, so the “education” process should be less stressful for the dog. She’s very anti her own faeces. No problem with peeing, but the minute she’s finished a dump she sprints off. This might be a problem on the boat!

    Just a question about your Dyneema inner f/stay, have you put a casing on it to prevent chafe from the hanks on staysail?? I am about to rig the same on my boat THX

    • @stephenburnage7687
      @stephenburnage7687 Год назад +2

      Good question. I was going to start changing out some of my rigging with dyneema buf decided against it. Superb in tensile strength but very weak on chafe. And in most situations, chafe is normally a bigger concern than tensile strength.

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Год назад

      Hi Rick, yes we put a casing on. We fondly remember this as we spliced it in a hotel room in Annapolis during a cold Novemember night! We about ripped the door knob off milking the cover on the splice! Haha!
      No worries so far about chafe on the IFS. Dyneema is stronger than most think. Rigging is a matter of compromises like anything else on board, unless of course your wallet is overflowing!
