Wow. What an epic journey. That old license plate frame from Redman Plymouth was the icing on the cake. Plus the dash lights coming on mysteriously, great omens.
Hey kiwi I'm glad you're spending a little time on Large Marge I'm almost living vicariously through you, watching you work on it. There's nothing more fun than the day you get your project back home and you get to start tearing it apart fixing things and making plans. Good luck man! I'm saving up money to finally go further on my 55 Buick it's slightly rustier than Marge, and my trans leaks too.
You really can't beat the automotive sales ads from the 50's and 60's. There's really something special about the whole art design and illustrations, and usually not a real photograph in the whole thing. Also lots of text to read. Also, it's always nice getting a lot of the small things corrected on a project like this. The things that would drive you bonkers in day to day use, that theoretically you could live with and kind of overlook, but when fixed really provide inertia to the whole thing.

Loved this! Watched every minute of the Big Adventure. I'm a lifelong station wagon guy since learning on Dad's big 1967 Mercury Commuter 390 and still driving my daily 2012 Accord wagon, a rare car in the US. Can't wait to see how Large Marge ends up...but when you're back to doing Mustangs my Turquoise '66 FB patiently awaits her new Unicorn Horn (plus those front discs, steering kit and 5-speed trans) Great road trip from San Diego!
Marge is quite the sweet ride!. I find much of the patina to be pleasing - on the roof and parts of the sides. However, in the places where it appears to have been ground down to bare metal then left to rust - it's here where the patina looks "forced". I'm not certain if a full repaint is in order or a scuff with a clear coat to seal the metal would be best BUT something needs to be done to seal the bare metal against rust. I would consider painting her with a "Fauxtina" approach which allows for better control of the patina as it creates a stronger protective covering over her sheet metal. My thoughts on your wipers is to look for a "Park" circuit within the wiper motor itself. Many systems continue allowing current to flow in the wiper motor AFTER it's cut by the switch on the dash, thus allowing the motor to cycle to the "Parked" position. Best of luck, Kiwi!
The hood is the worst part I think that's just been baked off. Regardless I'll have to do something to stop/slow the deterioration. Thanks for watching!
Jeep used a ford style starter relay with the chrysler auto trans . If you look up mid 80's CJ7 auto trans starter relay you can hook up the neutral safety switch

1961 Dodge car, 2 door sedan, pushbutton automatic. It was very fun to drive except on the highway on days with high winds, the grille was a large scoop.
Hi Kiwi! I have a bunch of the parts you need for the 59, but I do not see a mailing address? Let me know and I can send along whatever I have that will help... Cheers!
Buddy Redman (1903-92) was the owner of that Plymouth dealer and as Kiwi says, quite prominent in his community, which is also just up the road from Edwards AFB - famous for test flights including in 1947 Chuck Yeager's first supersonic flight in the X-1 "Glamorous Glennis." The local historical society has more information on Buddy Redman if you google "buddy redman lancaster moah". Sadly, Pancho's Happy Bottom Riding Club would have been closed by the time Marge rolled off the lot. But Pancho Barnes was also a famous pilot and one hell of a character around those parts; really a fascinating story in her own right.
Good update, Kiwi! Love the advertisement at the end. Cool to see what Large Marge looked like brand new. That' license plate bracket is interesting as well. Did they have things like that back in the day...1960? Seems like a later thing which may indicate when the car was on a used lot somewhere? Just a thought. Look forward to more. 👍
It reminds me that I have a modest stash of vintage car bulbs. (A friend of mine and I raided an old car shop/garage before it got knocked down some years ago. I think I got like a dozen yellow turn signall/marker light bulbs, 1156 size, maybe some old dome light tube bulbs, I forget what else. If Marge needs any, welll, some old dome light tubes, I forget what else. Le me know. I don't get much call for them around here. :)
I had a 57 Plymouth wagon I called it my shaggin wagon this was in 1978 so the car still looked great. My had a desoto power plant. I put 2 transmission’s in mine I got my parts from turners in Fresno
Wipers should park. We have a 58. They'll probably come back on their own as you keep using them. It's funny how on cars that have been parked a long time, they wake up just by using them.

I'm genuinely enjoying seeing this particular project come too life Great idea 💡 implementing that FoMoCo starter solenoid with an impromptu relay upgrade 👌 Glad too see , you've obtained factory 🏭 wiring diagram
What a GREAT adventure that was Kiwi! I don't know about the cars in 1959, but I do know the trucks and pickups didn't have "auto-park" for the wipers. You just had to be Johnny on the Spot with the switch to get them to stop in the right spot. Listening to that thing just fire on up like that is a true testament for the 318 Poly. Hands Down the most dependable V8 ever made! If only you could still get a 4bbl intake for it that didn't cost the same amount as you paid for the whole dang car.... lololol. I've had a few of those old Poly's that well outlasted the vehicles they were put in from the factory.
Hey Bare Rose, while that is true, the wagon was made for the wife to drive and if the wipers stopped in the middle of the windshield she would be complaining to her husband and in turn he to the dealer. Yes they had a park feature.
Hey Kiwi, I was thinking on that missing dash plate for the controls. You might cut that out of sheet metal like aluminum or stainless by using the one you have on the other side as a template, then do some jewel work on it to match the other side. As the original one’s would have been either aluminum or stainless. It won’t be factory, but no one will know if they both match.
Ford solenoids are easier to get, on the pro side. On the con side, there is now one more relay to possibly fail in the future. I couldn't find that video where you asked us about which engine we preferred to go into that wagon. In order of preference: 1- Keeping the Poly and then examining the piston rings for varnish that would keep them glued to their pistons. Swapping that cast-iron Torqueflite for a more modern aluminium-cased one 2- Increasing the poly's displacement, as suggested, keeping in mind that this would be the final cylinder bore possibility, in case of eventual cylinder damage 3- The 392 Hemi 4- A modrn Hemi
You're right it could, but for the advantage of the extra ignition voltage on cranking I think it's a good idea. Plus it's a quality relay not a $3 eBay Chinesium 😉. That video was a UTG one. I agree with your 1,2, and 3 but a modern Hemi is out in my book. Thanks for watching!
AMC used a solenoid exactly like that one but it had a ground terminal on the rear for the neutral safety. AMC used Chrysler trans in the 70’s and 80’s.

So the wipers are electric! I know I'm not the only one who was wondering. The wiper park feature just went out in my Corolla! I have to turn them off at the right time, or turn them to intermittent which is the only setting which stops them against the cowl, and then set the switch to off...
y'know, that poly 318 rebuilt to factory spec and topped with a 4-bbl would be a one-of-a-kind. Now finding sunburned flamingo paint might be difficult, reckon?
