I didn’t know Del Toro’s wife co-wrote this new movie until now. It makes total sense because the subject matter is very much different than what Del Toro usually deals with which is either comic books, magic realism or dark fantasy . Given that she’s an film historian, the movie’s echoes of old Hollywood and noir are all the more apparent. Honestly, I was expecting another monster movie but what I got instead was a psychological drama. A much more mature turn from Del Toro. At first I thought the film was painfully slow and tedious but upon second watch I realized how wrong I was. That rarely ever happens to me, when a movie improves like that upon rewatch. Still, I was in the mood to watch something a bit lighter afterwards
A famous quote from director John Huston on the subject of remakes: "There's no excuse for them if they were done right the first time". The Tyrone Power version was done right. And after 75 years, it's likely way too late to cash in on the popularity of the first one.
I completely agree. If a movie or done right, beloved, and considered great the first time it was made, why are they trying to redo greatness? It's the same with too many sequels, esp for the ones that had a full stop and to them.
The first movie was not 100% true to the book, This new version is more close to it. Also this version is Way Superior, it has scenes that are breath-taking, after a few watches one begins to understand how deep it is.
Loved the Tyrone Power movie, which reminds me of my recently departed grandmother. But del Toro's movies are visually arresting but boring. Hope he does some justice to this.
Surprised Eddie isnt the one interviewing
Great TCM video
Possible the Best movie of 2021.
This movie unfortunately fell into the category: brilliant film that somehow bombed at the box office
Most brilliant films bomb at the box office, these days... very, _very_ unfortunately!

She's a noir aficionado, for sure... and, _God,_ she's beautiful!
PS I dont think they're married, tho.
Definitely want to see this movie.

concurred - not many "remakes" are worth viewing

That's funny coming from Huston, considering his version of The Maltese Falcon was the third version made by Warners in a decade.

the remake of True Grit is far better than the original...

Romina Power has a small part in this movie.
