    I'm genuinely curious as to what happened to those people who made the animatronics for Deep Blue Sea. Those animatronic sharks were INCREDIBLY life-like, they could literally swim on their own without the need of extra equipment, and their movements perfectly replicated that of real sharks. And on top of that, their designs looked so real.

    I was listening to a couple guys do an audio commentary for Jaws, and the topic came up of a remake. One of the guys actually had what I thought was a pretty good idea, and that was to do a sort of loose prequel based on the 1916 shark attacks that happened in New Jersey. It was the inspiration for Peter Benchley to write the book, and was also mentioned in the film itself. What was really cool about his idea was the ending for the movie he came up with. Basically, the camera would zoom out over the water, travel what's supposed to be a great distance and many years into the future. Eventually the camera would pan up from the water and onto an island. Amity Island 1975. From a distance you see a young woman running towards the water taking her clothes off as she goes. At this point some of Chrissie's dialogue from the opening of Jaws is spliced in. Just as she's about to enter the water, a shark's fin pops out of the water, and those two famous notes from John Williams score play. Fade to black and the movie ends where the original Jaws began.
    What's great about that idea is it's not a sequel. or a remake. As I said, it would be sort of a loose prequel, but even there the only real thing tying the two films together would be that ending. The movie could very much stand on it's own and not step on the toes of the original film in any way, but it could still make that little connection right at the end.

    • @wd2918
      @wd2918 3 года назад +2

      Completely agree with that. The jaws story itself in my view should not be touched but some form of prequel along the lines of the New Jersey attacks in 1916 or the USS Indianapolis with a young quint would work, however, certain things would have to be taken into account to make those storylines work and make them be really good films. Ideally you would want to keep the same formula of not showing much of the shark and building the suspense like in the original jaws film which was the main source for the horror. Unfortunately with the suicidal script writing for big films these days in Hollywood and the insistence on using cgi over great visual effects and props I can’t see it happening

    • @MrDannyboyhall
      @MrDannyboyhall 11 месяцев назад +2

      That could be a good idea the problem I see is as usual the studio would go overboard with cgi that looks incredibly fake they would need to make it like jaws where you don’t really see a whole lot of the shark for most of the movie that’s what made the original so good was the suspense

      My dad’s written a terrific, original action movie, planned out the logistics, the stunts, the model/miniature effects (NO CGI Shots unless ABSOLUTELY necessary) but Hollywood shot him down when he approached agencies trying to attach a top director (Sam ‘Skyfall’ Mendes) and bankable talent. They’re losing a fuckload of money due to their ignorance of what the public want. He’s talking about starting a new British studio like Warner’s or Universal and release it that way, using the billions it will generate to self-finance the next few films he produces, using the same production talent hiring formula...top director and proven crew who can get it made for him. By competing directly with Hollywood using AMERICAN style filmmaking and established star actors, the films he is preparing will shock everyone when they are released. Using strong, solid character development and character identification, and stories of cathartic resonance, audiences will be lining around the block. People can laugh at this all they like, take the piss till they’re blue in the face, but I’ve SEEN what he’s planning and while Hollywood dies on its arse with sex/pedophilia scandals and over-reliance on shitty product, he WILL have the last laugh.
      As for a Jaws remake, Hollywood bear witness...with every remake or reboot you toss off, your own legacy will suffer ever further. Shame you’re all too fucking blind to see it coming...isn’t it?!

      Exactly! That’s my beef with so many films today. The characters are so disposable and uninteresting to the point where they don’t even add to the plot so that when a character dies it doesn’t have the desired effect, unlike Jaws where the dialog feels so natural and not forced. It FEELS real and flows perfectly. It’s like the characters actually lived through the stories they tell and it draws the audience in like someone’s telling a scary story around a campfire. So many of todays films just miss that magic.

If there were a killer shark today, authorities would just go out and blow it up with a rocket launcher. lol. A remake would have to be set in the 70s but then reimagined. Show the audience what it didn’t see before. Show the shark swimming away with chrissie. Same with alex. Actually show what would really happen. But don’t change the story. Cast would have to be perfect.

    Here's how it could work:
    - Not a remake of the Spielberg movie, but a more faithfull adaptation of the book
    - Recreation of the opening scene from the moment, the girl goes into the water. Then, after a couple of shots, insert an overhead shot of the sharks frame nearby the girl, then continue the recreation until the moment the POV comes to her legs. Now, the shark's coming from the background and eats her foot and we realize, that there was no POV of the shark at all (and never will be so that the attacks come out of silence and nowhere). Then, the girl gets eaten as described as in the book. This opening scene will do several things: 1. It will disturb the fans of the original who where eased or annoyed by the recreation at the beginning but then terrified when it changes. 2. The brutality of the attack (now shown with a convincing - at least The Shallows-level- CGI-shark) will terrify them too, because getting eaten by something is a primal fear deep within us.
    - No score or shark theme at all. Only ambient sounds and songs from radios etc.
    - A period piece still set in the 70's, so that modern technology or knowledge of sharks isn't applyable. (The shark in the novel acts and reacts more believable than in the movie)
    - Make the shark scared and battleworn, so that the explanation for him staying is about his failing ability to hunt down agile and aware sealife, but he can easy prey on humans. Instead of lecturing about megalodons as he does in the novel, Hooper could give that explanation.
    - Instead of the Indianapolis speech (which isn't in the novel), Brody could attempt to bring an M-16 on board, which Quint forbids. He could give Brody a quick speech, that he's killing sharks for decades "... with irons, hooks. With my goddamn hands." This would silence younger viewers who would argue, why they don't just shoot the shark.
    - Focus on the town. This is not a movie about a shark eating people but a town on the brink of bankrupcy because of something they cannot control.
    - Let the characters be as unsympathetic as they are in the novel - it will make for great acting scenes with drama and tension (if people are willing to spend years with psychotic mobsters, dying meth cooks and soziopathic serial killer killing serial killers, they will be on board for 4 hours for a new adaptation of Jaws).
    - Make it a 4 hour-twoparter on Netflix. This will fix almost any initial problems, if they ever announce it. The box office won't matter, you don't need to outdo iconic posters or trailers. And because people won't feel that they have to pay for it (because once Netflix becomes a fixed payment every month like electricity or the phone bill, people look at Netflix stuff as it was "for free") they will watch it eventually.

    Well… dead space remake came this year, people criticized it because “dead space didn’t need a remake” and now it’s a really good game. I think a jaws remake can be good if they expand the lore and change some events to be more like the movie, with also using animatronics (or cgi) but still keeping the shark hidden with also good actors and good soundtrack.

    No, there should not be a straight up remake of Jaws by ANY means. That said, I think it *would* be interesting to see it get the requel treatment, similar to Halloween. Ignore Jaws 2, 3, and Revenge completely. A direct sequel to the first film, set 50 years later. Be interesting to see a contemporary Amity, and maybe set it on the anniversary of the original shark killings from the first movie. New cast of characters, maybe bring back Richard Dreyfuss as Hooper to fill in that legacy character hole.
    Now, I'm not saying *this* should necessarily happen either, but it would be an interesting way to reignite the franchise, since it's been all but dead for the most part since the fourth movie.

    The Indianapolis “Quint” prequel was the original concept for the sequel of Jaws, but the stupid studio heads wanted to rehash the same story so what we got instead was Jaws 2. I agree with you 100%. The Indianapolis story would be a great movie. It’s terrifying, haunting, sad, true, and it’s a period piece. The Quint tie in is a story within a story. Hell, it worked for Titanic, it would work for that as well.

    What Jaws needs is a direct sequel that heavily retcons/ignores the sequels, kind of like the H40 trilogy from the Halloween franchise. Probably mainly focus on new characters, but maybe also bring in Hooper and show how he’s changed since the original incident.
    I also think Jaws is so good because of how realistic its story is.
    Also, when Jaws 2 was in production, one of Spielberg’s ideas WAS the Quint-focused Indianapolis prequel, but Universal at the time said no.

    I love the first two Jaws films the first movie is a master piece. I'll tell you why a remake of this movie will fall flat on its face. Firstly i can be for certain the remake will not involve Steven Spielberg and probably none of the original cast or film crew. I'll just say this there is no way to remake the following films and them have the same cultural impact they did when originally released. The original Star Wars trilogy, Jurassic Park and JP Lost World, Back to the Future trilogy, Terminator 1 & 2, Fast Time at Ridgemont High, Vacation movies starring Chevy Chase, Ferris Buellers Day off, 90's Batman movies,Ghost Busters 1 & 2, Halloween 1 & 2.

    Well said and excellent video.
    Jaws is probably the greatest example of a film becoming so great because so much went wrong during the production.
    It was only because it was such a disaster ridden production that in a very happy accident,Spielberg was able to take the material and the many problems they incurred and made the best lemonade from lemons probably in modern movie making.
    The movie is such a great classic because so much went wrong,and a young hungry legendary director in the making managed to produce an almost perfect movie.
    Nowadays,the financiers would have shit production down and have the director fired and replaced with a cheaper yes man.
    Never again will so much going wrong turn into so much turning out beautifully.

    A Jaws remake... for the love of everything good, NOOOOOOOO! (there is absolutely no way to recapture that Brody/Quint/Hooper chemistry again)
    A Jaws reimagining? Sure, why not. ☺

    • @lewzer6618
      @lewzer6618 4 года назад

      That's the one and only justifiable reason to not remake Jaws. You could get the best current actors but you can't duplicate the chemistry. The actors portraying Hooper/quint really didn't like each other and it works perfectly....today actors would either not work together or walk off set. Also, these actors worked with the writer/director each night before a next day scene was shot and essentially wrote the dialogue for that scene. It was a perfect mix of story & actors & filming that could never ever be duplicated. Also, the shark not working made Spielberg have to be more creative which in the end upped the terror factor by 10.

    Regardless of how we may feel, storytellers, artist etc have the right to do a reinterpretation of an existing work should they choose to. What matters is the approach which has often not been really good, but we have had some absolute bangers. Personally I think Jaws be left alone but I'm not against someone else taking a shot at it either. At least it's not like we're getting a new Batman every five seconds.
