After sitting on this for a couple months now I've come to the realization that my explanation as to the formation of condensation rings was absolutely abysmal. It's actually a near complete reversal as to how I explained it. If you know anything about the formation of mach cones around aircraft approaching the sound barrier, it's much the same. While the shock front itself is an area of high pressure, its movement of air creates an equally intense region of low pressure behind it. As I demonstrated earlier in the video, reducing the pressure results in a drop in temperature, and when you lower the temperature of moist air, you're primed for the formation of cloud droplets. As the low pressure region passes, temperatures rise, and the cloud dissipates. This is why rings (and wilson clouds) form. A running list of other screw-ups: 1. Cumulonimbus clouds do not have the subset castellanus. I had meant to say cumulonimbus calvus, or cumulonimbus clouds that haven't formed an anvil. 2. The outer casing of the TX-16 was not aluminum, it was steel. 3. For whatever reason, I mispronounced "noctilucent" as "nocticulent". 4. The bombing of Hiroshima occured on August 6th, three days before the 9th, not two. If you find any others, please let me know so I can correct them.
What was the aluminum tube spitting fire you talked about at the end coz I don't remember hearing anything about it before. Have heard of the Trinity tests, Hiroshima and even the Tsar bomba, but no idea what that last bit referred to and you ended the video after mentioning it without explanation.

You're lying if you said you didnt have a phase where you fell down the rabbithole and became infatuated with Tornados and Nukes and spent afternoons watching footage. everyone has a Tornado phase cause they are just that cool and fascinating
The formation of Starfish Prime's fireball (among other Fishbowl detonations') could use a little explanation. It formed into those lines because the blast was so high up that the paths of the blast's highly-charged particles were deformed by Earth's magnetic field. This changes the understanding of how EMPs resulting from near-space detonations work when you take that into account. On a completely different note, any chance you could do a Scale of Volcanoes video? I really liked both this and the one on tornadoes.
If you a the volcano video, be sure to include the (apparently) dead super-volcanoes on Mars and the plethora of ever-changing volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io!
I can see it now, he spits some facts on the biggest supervolcanic eruption known from the geological record and then hits us with the plot twist of flood basalt eruptions with some music that just gives you chills
I wish you talked more about Starfish Prime cause it's interesting: that debris cloud was so high that it wasn't really a mushroom cloud anymore but an _aurora_ - the shape was dictated by Earth's magnetic field. The explosion created an artificial radiation belt around Earth that remained for months and damaged several satellites.
Also, nukes need... Dont know the proper term in english "stützmasse" (literally "column/base mass"). Without air and matter, there is just radiation plus the little blast that is mediated by the bombs own mass.

It’s astonishing how much energy it requires for us to _slightly perturb_ our planet. Short term, that is. Over the long term, we’re insanely good at making huge changes with tiny inputs. 😰
What's really wild to think about regarding the Tzar Bomba test is how far away one could be, while still being able to see it. It was still visible over 600 miles away, and it's heat could be felt at 160 miles distance from ground zero. To put it in perspective, I live about 180 miles away from Manhattan, and New York City. If a 50 megaton device was used against one of those locations, not only would both be deleted from the list of things that physically exist, I would be able to step outside and see the explosion with near perfect clarity, and I'd feel the heat of nearly ten million people being purged from reality. We know the shockwave from the blast encompassed the earth three times, with the first wave making it's way around the earth in just over 36 hours, with the circumference of the earth being around 25,000 miles, we can conclude the shockwave was initially traveling at an average speed of about 700 miles per hour for the first circumventing wave. With a distance of about 180 miles from myself and the theoretical ground zero, it would take around 15 and a half minutes for this deity flattening gust of wind to reach me and give my house a new pressure wash at just a hair shy of the speed of sound.
I read that even at 100km 3rd degree burns would happen, which is probably death id assume. I grew up in Laguna Beach about 65 miles/1hr drive south of downtown LA. Crazy to think if 50MT hit LA people on the beach in Laguna/Orange County would be fried 😯

Operation Fishbowl truly is a testament to humanity’s destructive potential and the lengths we are willing to go for knowledge. This is hands down the best video essay I’ve watched.

The image was a still from footage of Poplar, as I've come across next to zero actual photos of its late-stage cloud. why did this out of all the things, became my comfort video I keep coming back over and over again, ig it's that good
Holy shit. Absolutely phenominal video. You've earned my subscription.
I’ve seen his tornado vid, and it is crazy.
I LIKE IT!
Not going to let the gem of the final chat replay message get lost: "...and to the minute, it is now 77 years since crossroads able, the first nuclear test after world war 2, the test that kicked all this off". Absolutely brilliant. I come to rewatch just for that last segment all the time
Absolutely amazing, especially loved the ending
damn good video, you deserve more views
PLEASE more Pink Floyd deep cuts! I first saw your tornado scale video and I'm absolutely hooked. You've earned my sub. 🙂
I absolutely love your style of videos… the way you move onto other topics/points is phenomenal, your editing, even the way you share the information just scratches my brain in all the right places, I will be sticking around and excited for every new video that you make
Holy crap, this is very well done, though I must say I think the photo of hardtack II poplar was actually the oak shot.... I think....
The image was a still from footage of Poplar, as I've come across next to zero actual photos of its late-stage cloud. There are quite a few images out there masquerading as Poplar that are indeed of Oak (I think the most common is the famous "soldiers onlooking" photo), so I wanted to make sure I actually distinguished between the two.
Glad you liked the video!
I love when the algorithm gives me great videos from smaller channels.
We are a few days from ending 2023 and this is by far the best video I’ve seen all year on RUclips
This video is 50+ Megatons of awesomeness!
Every detail. I love how It conveys dense information in phases, intertwined by smart humor and perfectly timed VFX, footage and graphs.
Netflix or HBO would't do better.
Theendiing of that bikini atol music when the music gets destorted and then cut gave me the most jnnerving feeling when it comes to nuclear stuff since I can remember
27:10 I never noticed before what looks to be lightning on either side of the Ivy Mike blast. That is both very cool, and utterly terrifying. Had no idea that was a thing
he single handedly roasted every comparison youtuber using a description
That ending song is lit af. Also i love the science behind clouds now apparently
I've always been afraid of the philosophical concept of atomic weapons. But nothing has truly struck fear into me in regards to the actual explosion itself like this video has.
This video deserves 100 times the attention it has gotten so far.
absolutely stellar production, closest comparisons to quality i can draw are Ahoy and Lemmino.
stand proud
the editing in this video is absolutely phenomenal. super underrated vid and channel
that intro was the best shit i’ve ever watched. the transition to the video topic after still delivering some pretty interesting information???? FLAWLESS. definitely subbing after that one 🙏
i saw the tornadoes one first soooo... ANOTHER INCREDIBLE VIDEO! KEEP EM COMING! waiting on the "Earthquakes to scale" vid
25:30 honestly has to be the best part of the video the infographics the editing. Its all so good
Dude, that song at the end, 30000 Megatons... that's heavy. Amazing video, thank you!
Lord Algo fed me this video and I was expecting some mindless short but 3 minutes in and I already know I'm binging your videos tonight.
If “The Fun” is on its way to my house, he’s going to be in for a surprise because I won’t be home… and neither will my house be.
your music taste is impeccable
First time I watched a 30 minute+ documentary/video and enjoyed it so much I want to watch it on loop several times.
Ending the video with a rocket to space is calming
Simply put: This guy puts out some of the best content I've seen.
Dope taste in music, too.
One of the best RUclips videos I’ve ever watched. Not the most technically amazing, or most informative video, but definitely entertaining and emotional. Just being reminded of the scale of destructive insanity that thermonuclear weapons represent, what humanity is capable of, is sobering. The musical accompaniment helps a lot, too. Thanks!
In the CASTLE BRAVO test, the expected yield was 6 MT. Instead it was 15 MT. The scientists almost fried themselves.
That was actually the case for most of the Castle Operation bombs, they severely underestimated the power of fusion
Loved the eiditing and content of the video, great job!
This is an amazing video essay for how few views you have, and my only very very very mild complaint is that your microphone may not be as high a quality as other youtubers. But other than that, this is easily one of the best essay channels on youtube. Sort of a lower-energy emplemon (which makes sense, considering he came from ytp)
That intro just made me want a video on just normal clouds too. ☠️
