- From his 1982 album By the Hush. Stewart wrote that he adapted this from "an old Gaelic poem [he] found". I did some research and found a song titled "Bidh Mi Ga D' Chaoidh", attributed to John MacLachlan of Rahoy, in Morvern. See here sheet music from 1885:

LYRICS
Ah me I must mourn my true love evermore
Though coldly forsaken it's you I adore
And if you'd return then I'd make you my bride
Or I'd cross the wild Atlantic to be by your side
On the morning we parted how sad the farewell
Our words they were few but our thoughts none could tell
And when lost to my vision far over the brine
I drank your success in a goblet of wine
Three times have I crossed to the ship as she lay
Becalmed on the breast of the silvery bay
And my crew are the bravest ever handled an oar
Unawed by the tempest they laugh at its roar
No ballroom can tempt me nor raise my despair
For there's none in the dance that with you can compare
And to watch the young lovers as they swing round the floor
Brings tears to these eyes that may see you no more
And in beauty there's none with this lady could vie
She's as pure as the stars in the blue of the sky
She's as fair as a lily and as sweet as a rose
And there's nothing can tempt me her name to disclose
No drink will I take for to lighten my heart
But the wildest adventures I'll take for my part
No woman on earth will I have for a bride
'Til I cross the wild Atlantic to be by your side
Ah me I must mourn my true love evermore
Though coldly forsaken it's you I adore
And if you'd return then I'd make you my bride
Or I'll cross the wild Atlantic to be by your side Видеоклипы
The world is diminished by his passing.
Bittersweet to hear this beautiful tune. I saw Andy on stage several times in the US and once at the Innerleithen festival, Scotland. It was one of the last times he was on stage, I believe, before his health took a turn. I don't think I've ever been so starstruck in my life as when I got to meet him at the end of his performance at Innerleithen. Probably made a complete fool of myself gushing my admiration for his talent and artistry. Oh well, it is to this day one of my most cherished memories. A great privilege and a great sadness that he left us too soon. Thank goodness for the beauty he left us to remember him by.
Didn’t discover Andy M. Stewart until I heard a Silly Wizard album. He had quite a voice that touched the hearts of many. He is missed. 😢
What an absolutely beautiful voice. So expressive. I only came across Andy recently and could listen to him forever
This is so magic, Andy defenitly knows how to keep alive the legends
There is just something about his voice that draws you in.
The best Version of this song. Tears in my eyes everytime...
I haven't heard this song for a long time. It brings me forgotten memories of my first time on the board of a tall ship. Undeservedly, he remained unknown widely.
Andy M. Stewart is the best. This particular song has always touched me very deeply...
Me too. :)

Those words perfectly capture the loss of my best friend, Scott, on 1/1/76. He died in a terrible fire, along with his brother at his family's home. The rest of his family moved shortly after and I never saw any of them ever again. Where my friend's remains went I do not know, but I found myself returning to his empty home, for many months, on weekend evenings, again and again. I still miss him like hell. He was born on 9/22/58.
@@fenwayify So sorry....such a tragic story. I wonder if his parents made it...can't imagine the pain they suffered to lose two children and in such a horrific way. For the family to leave without any further contact tells me they were on the precipice. I am sure you will be thinking of him tomorrow on what would have been his 63rd birthday.
@@singtweetypie Nice of you to say...And I do still think of him, the memories seem to return for no particular reason. As bad as the loss was for their parents, it was also horrific for the surviving younger brother and sister. I always wished either had reached out to me over the years, but never did. I thought it might bring a little comfort sharing some with each other...
Andy M. Stewart is one of the greatest Celtic singers of all time, if not the greatest, as far as I'm concerned. Thank you for posting this wonderful song :)
Andy was my cousin we grew up together in the same street. My brother my father and I were with him the day before he passed away . We all miss him terribly. Thank you for your kind words 🙏.
@@neilmccormick2064 My sincere condolences. I’ve been listening to his music since I was 14. The world is a smaller place without him, but his music will endure.

Gorgeous! Thanks for posting. Just one small correction to the lyrics: the last word of the first line of verse 5 should be "vie," not "buy."
Whoops! Thanks for catching that!
