    Hey Scotty! ALMOST everything you said on here is spot on. I want to add a clarification though. At 1:20 you pointed at the date sticker on the battery. Here's the thing about that, that "date sticker" is ALSO referred to as a "rotation sticker". I worked with Interstate Batteries for 5 years. At the distributor I worked at, we were good at only ordering the amount we expected to sell in the next 30 days, so the batteries would always be "factory fresh". However, there are accounts where we'd leave a stock of batteries for them, and if they did not sell in 3 months, they would be ROTATED for fresh ones. The now 3mo old battery would come back to the distributor to be recharged overnight, and the next day it was put back as available inventory to sell but now featuring a ROTATION STICKER indicating the current month and year. Just as a general rule for warranty purposes, if no date/ rotation sticker is present, there is also the date stamp that is engraved on the battery by the factory when it rolled off the assembly line (all Johnson Controls-made batteries like Interstate, Optima, Motorcraft, Duralast, Autocraft, and others). It's usually a 5-digit alpha-numeric code but only the first 2 pertain to the date. Letter, and Number. Letter is A-L (first 12 letters, referring to the 12 months of the year), and the number is the year. So for example, a K5RUL, date code is K5, meaning November 2015. Other battery manufacturers use a different, but similar method for dating their batteries at the factory (EastPenn and Exide are the 2 other major players in the automotive battery game, and their subsequent umbrella brands all have their own dating system). So just keep that in mind! That date sticker isn't always pertaining to the actual age of the battery. Keep up the great work!

    Just some other comments to contribute:
    1. Most the US lead acid car batteries come from Johnson Controls. Even Optima.
    2. Most of those Johnson Control batteries have a sliding scale in terms of cost and warranty. The performance mostly remains the same. So some batteries may cost more and feature a 5 year warranty, whereas others may be cheaper and only have a 3 year warranty. The battery is usually the same. I personally rather have a lower cost battery that might need replaced after 3 years if it’s $50 cheaper than a 5 year warranty battery.
    3. If possible, borrow a battery tester and take it to the store with you so you can test the CCA rating. You want to see a CCA measurement which is 50 to 100 CCAs above the rating on the sticker.

      While income and inflation have kept in balance, but there’s a reason 170 is more expensive today than 35 in the 70’s. An example, in the 70s a kid could pay for college working 15 hours a week at minimum wage. Now at a similar school, it would take 35.
      35 is a fair amount of time to spend at work when you’re in college. Today they have none left over, whereas before they had half their paycheck still.
      Cars, homes, health insurance have all followed similar trends

    One thing that you didn't address was battery terminal corrosion. The sealed top batteries vent very little corrosive gas, therefore the terminals seldom or never need cleaning. The conventional batteries spew gas acid all over the top, requiring frequent maintenance.

Use distilled water only when filling it if it's low. Only fill each cell (hole) until the water touches the inner rim at its lowest point.

    I once had a sealed car battery and the vent which should release the pressure got blocked for some reason. I only realised the problem when I noticed that the dash and the information display goes blank when I cranking the engine. I measured the voltage and it was below 12 volts, next I checked the terminals which I then spotted a small hole which had been blown outwards on top of the battery which indicated the blocked vent. I had no choice but to replace the battery which cured the blank display problem during cranking. The faulty battery was only 15 months old.

    Scotty.... for lead-acid car batteries in the US there 3 choices.... East Penn/Deka, Johnson Control and Exide.... I am not a spokesperson but I have been to the East Penn plant as a guest..... I can say this.... they didnt have anything negative to say about Johnson Control.... They couldnt say a nice word about Exide. I strongly recommend avoiding them. I heard somewhere that they are mainly a recycler at this point but their stuff is still out there (Tractor Supply was my most recent encounter).... I think that date sticker battery you showed was a Johnson Control..

    Hey Scotty, thanks for your great vids, I've got a quick question here. Time to replace the battery on my 2005 volvo xc90 2.5T. The oem is an H6 type with 600cca and can find it only at the dealer. Other places like costco are offering batteries with a higher cca, like 760, 800 or even 900. Could you please suggest me what to do, is the higher cca dangerous for anything like starter motor or the alternator. Should I consider the agm battery since the oem is not, or I just do what is written in the manufacturer's book and replace it with the exact same one. Thank you very much in advance.

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 Год назад

      Get one with higher CCA it will make the car start easier in winter and if anything put less stres on your motor and alternator. As for whether to get AGM or the older style get AGM it is not needed but will do no harm to anything in the car and the battery will probably last much longer since AGM batteries are designed to take far more stress as they are used in cars with stop/start technology. You will essentially be equiping a battery that is massively over specification for you car and it will live an easy life and probably last as long as the rest of the car give its a 2005.

    Wow you have some crazy battery prices over there, my Justy needed a new battery recently and it only cost me the equivalent of about 70 dollars for a Varta battery (which I consider a good brand because it has served me well in all my cars lasting at least 5-8 years), they even gave me some money back for the old one.

    • @Korrupted8787
      @Korrupted8787 6 лет назад

      What is the CCA and reserve? Smaller battery's are cheaper. I too get 5-8 years out of my battery's and I live in Canada. Though with -30c my 5 year old battery is starting to give out. I'm going to go with an AGM this time.

    • @zuilok
      @zuilok 6 лет назад

      dont quote me on this one but I believe its 390A and 42Ah yeah its small but it does the job :) we dont really get -30 over here (we used to when I was about 20 years younger) last year the lowest temp was -18c I believe. The lowest temperature we had so far this winter was just -6 which is nothing.

    Always buy from Walmart since it's no hastle for the 5 year warranty. And always buy the battery with most cold cranking amps. You don't have to buy one that's not the correct group size some smaller ones will work too just measure yours before you pick up

    My wife killed a new battery within 1 year of purchasing it. I found out she was sitting in her car during lunch listening to the radio with the car key in the ignition position instead of the accessory position. The headlights and all the vent fans were running for about 45 min a day, 5 days a week. Regular car batteries are not meant to be deep-cycled and should remain above 90% charged at all times. I ended up installing an optima deep cycle battery in the car to idiot-proof it.

    • @elkillerx
      @elkillerx 6 лет назад

      My girlfriend would do the same thing! Sometimes she would drain the battery so bad that the car would barely start. I ended up installing one of those deep cycle batteries on her truck and so far its been working great.

      It depends on the use. If you're not abusing a regular car battery, and properly care for it (cleaning posts, adding water when needed, etc), an old fashion battery will last longer than an Optima.
      However, if you drain the battery below start voltage, and tend to ignore it, a high cycle, or deep cycle Optima will usually survive when the others don't.

    You should have mentioned to charge the new battery before it's first start. AGM is a great upgrade for any vehicle that is not factory equipped with one. The AGM battery is well worth the extra money in a cold climate. Starts much better in the cold and lasts longer. My channel has videos about battery maintainers for anyone who is interested in more info about charging batteries.

    I dont get it. The battery will be sitting in your car for years and years. Who cares if its a month or two or three old when you buy it. How would it deteriorate any faster sitting on the shelf in a store than sitting under the hood of your car?

    • @ColAngus
      @ColAngus 6 лет назад +7

      sulfation due to non charging, in a car you are charging it frequently.

    • @wvadam
      @wvadam 5 лет назад

      Mr. Me, exactly right. These answers on youtube are vastly oversimplified and at worst you are buying a battery that has gone through 1 partial discharge cycle losing a few % per month. You charge it up full and the sulphate is transformed back into sulphuric acid, that's how the battery works every time. Is a battery that has been sitting on a shelf slightly worse than one that is brand new? yes but insignificantly so.

    Depend on battery types, some batteries that have chemical reaction which you cannot stop it..However can reverse the reaction.. using pulse repair mode on some of the smart charger function. I have three cars. My 720CCA batteries tooks 32 hrs to repair from SOH 86% to 100%. My 380 CCA battery took 4 hrs to bring SOH 90% to 100% and my 300CCA battery took 11 days to bring up from 47% to 100%. All are lead acid battery which subject to sulphate. So need to desulphate 2x a year for preventive maintenance
