Hi, nice experiences and wellcome to Argentina. I hope you have enjoyed the time you spend here and come to visit us again, you will be welcomed. Blessings !! !!
Hi nice video. But I don't think I'm gonna be able to sleep tonight after watching the mate part XD. You are not supposed to move the straw (bombilla) after putting it in, and you moved it A LOT like if it was a spoon. I've never seen anybody doing that with so much impunity. When we make foreigners try mate we tell them beforehand "Do not move the straw". Why? First: because. You just don't do it. You will never see anybody doing that. Second: because the person who makes the mate is like an architect of his mate, sometimes they build like a perfect mountain, with a half dry part and a lower wet half where he pours the water (if you google for images of mates you will understand what I mean), and if you move the straw even as an accident you destroy it and he won't be happy. Third: because it usually makes the straw get stuck with the yerba and it gets difficult to suck the water. About restaurants not having mate, I don't think there is a single restaurant in argentina that will have it. Unless it's a turist trap. People have their own mates and a lunch or dinner are not usually the time for a mate. We usually drink it in the breakfast, 5 o'clock (merienda), at the office and in the university to stay awake. Usually we share it with a group and the first mate is very bitter (I love it) but after some rounds it doesn't have any more flavour. So it has to be very flavoury in order to last longer. Also that's the reason why your mate was so big. There are small mates also that don't require so much yerba and it could have been better maybe for just you two. I hope I could give you some interesting info. Greetings and enjoy the rest of your trip.
Hope you have a good trip! But, please, Salsa music in a Buenos Aires video is as if it were bluegrass music over San Francisco or hip hop over a New Orleans travelling guide. It is quite ennerving, and at least condescending.

Greetings from the Argentine south. In reference to 'making' mate, there are ways, so that it is not "strong". the most effective, although not so decorous, in comparison. is to drink and spit out the first infusions. but there are more ways.apart from adding sugar, to taste.and a herb to recommend "arroyo verde".

@@PursuingMountains you should deffinitly ask the locals. You made every mistake in the book when you made that first mate. Never touch the straw and do not stir it up. Thanks for being open and trying it out.
You guys aré crazy to try mate without sugar... in Argentina 60% drink it with sugar! and the rest who drink without sugar also grew up drinking mate with sugar and then little by little they went to sugar-free, but if you are not used to it, it is an impossible mission to try to drink mate without sugar for the first time... then there are many types of yerba with different tastes or you can add a little coffee or replace the water with milk or hot or cold fruit juices etc. There are many types of mate depending on who drinks it... haha greetings from Argentina!🇦🇷🧉 C
There are many ways to prepare mate. In my case, I add ginger and chamomile, and sometimes even coconut flakes and mint close to the straw. However, it's important not to play with the straw, and the temperature should be between 70 and 80 degrees Celsius. Anything above 80 degrees is bad for your health, as it can burn the yerba mate and ruin its flavor.
Nice video... not so much the part of the mate. You were left alone with that beast and, naturally, you got defeated. Basically, the pot is filled with the herb, with the opening covered it's placed upside down and shaken, so the powder bringing the flavor remains at the top, next the pot is placed sideways to make a wall of herb leaving the other side empty to pour the water and place the straw in. When pouring the water, you wont cover the tower of herb to keep it as dry as possible. The first person drinks all the content without moving the straw and returns the pot to be filled again, leving the top of the tower dry. The outcome is that the pouder drains into the water slowly, you don't get it all entirely at the first serving, and this way the flavor is distributed among many servings. The only one that's allowed to move the straw is the one pouring the water. They do so to take care of the tower, and to break it slowly when the herbs underneath begins to wash out losing flavor. You mixed it all on the first serving, taking all the flavor intended for a dozen servings or more in the first one, and should you keep drinking, you'd get the herb washed out in a couple more servings.
Garbanzo= chickpeas. For drinking mate, you need to get used to it first. For foreign people, it's advisable that you start off by drinking first "mate cocido con leche", so just like tea in a cup and with milk. And sugar or honey if you would.
