The Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires is one of the most important opera houses in the world. Its rich and prestigious history and the exceptional acoustic and architectural conditions of its building place it at the level of theaters such as the Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, the Vienna Opera, Covent Garden in London and the Metropolitan in New York. Throughout its history, no important artist of the 20th century has failed to set foot on its stage. Suffice it to mention singers like Enrico Caruso, Claudia Muzio, Maria Callas, Régine Crespin, Birgit Nilsson, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, dancers like Vaslav Nijinski, Margot Fonteyn, Maia Plisetskaia, Rudolf Nureyev, Mijail Barishnikov, directors like Arturo Toscanini, Herbert von Karajan, Héctor Panizza, Ferdinand Leitner, among dozens more. It is also common that, following the tradition inaugurated by Richard Strauss, Camille Saint-Saëns, Pietro Mascagni and Ottorino Respighi, composers come to the Colón to direct or supervise the premieres of their own works. Finally, since 2010, the Teatro Colón exhibits a building restored in all its original splendor, giving a framework of distinguished hierarchy to its presentations. For all these reasons, the Teatro Colón is a pride of Argentine culture and a reference center for opera, dance and academic music around the world.
5:15 that's an ombu, and is actually a giant bush native to the Pampas, not a tree. By the way, did you just eat US food and fast food while in BA or did you try the local foods? (besides empanadas).
Interesting! Thanks for letting me know. It's so massive and I've never seen anything like it before. I definitely ate a lot of local foods. These first two days were difficult because of my flight delay and the timing of the opera, but I'll be sharing my food experiences in future videos.
Hi James, I just came back from Buenos Aires. Your reviews really helped us for the trip: we went to Al Ateneo Grand Splendid, saw a musical performance at Teatro Colon, ate Pizza at Guerrin. We also went to Don Julio; you definitely should go if you end up back at Buenos Aires. Thanks again!
I'm glad you've enjoyed your stay and shared such gorgeous views and reviews of my hometown with the world. Concerning your choice of food and places to eat, I think it's natural to search for what's familiar in a new city or country, especially if it's your first time or you don't speak the local language. Something similar happened to me when I visited Paris and I ate at McDonald's many times because it was handy and open 24 hours and I knew what I would get, not because I wasn't interested in trying local eats. And just for the records, I'm not American and these days I may have fast food only once in a while. ☺
Thank you! Yeah, these first two days weren't the best ones regarding food, but I didn't mind it. I had almost two weeks in Buenos Aires, so I knew that I would have plenty of opportunities to eat at more unique restaurants. Plus, it's interesting to me seeing how restaurant chains I'm familiar with adobt to the local area.

What a beautiful video about such a special place! I didn’t know about “Americana”, will definitely add it to the list, but for your next visit I can recommend empanadas from “mi gusto” - it’s another level 🔥
First of all, I can’t believe you ate at McDs and Starbucks for your first two meals?!? I have been to BA twice, once for 3 months and 2 months. I am going back in January for a month. The last time I was there was 2019 and the blue rate wasn’t that drastically different but now inflation is just crazy. How hard was WU to get money? Did you have to set up anything ahead of time back home before you went to BA? I don’t know if I want to do a Camino or WU? I did the Opera House tour when I went the first time. It was so informative and beautiful. Plus at the end they gave us free tix to dress rehearsal of “Porgy and Bess” for that night. I had to go home and eat and change clothes. Not really an opera fan but at least it was in English!
@@coachab100 I have a couple of food ones up too. I wasn't too upset that I went to Starbucks and McDonald's at first because I knew I had more time in Argentina to go to better places. As far as getting money, it wasn't much of a problem. I downloaded the Western Union App to my phone and it takes just minutes to set up. I got money twice during my visit. The first time, as depicted in this video, it wasn't a problem and took only about 20 minutes. My second time I waited over an hour in line to get money, but that was because it was after a long weekend with a holiday and Western Union was closed. I would recommend getting money at Western Union during the middle of the week if you don't want to wait too long.
@@Jamesnu thanks James! Supposedly now, foreign credit cards like Visa pays almost the Blue rate if it comes to that! But cash is king. I just hate walking around with all those bills! I usually go to Europe in the spring or fall and BA is very European to me!

Those are not that bad, you can get even worse. It's simple math, the shittier the napkins are, the better the food is going to be. It's like "Ugh I don't care, my food is delicious, so you are coming even if put you to eat standing and give you plastic for cleaning"

Hola James!
@@Jamesnu okay that’s good to know! i also read that if you use your credit card in Buenos Aires, it would charge you a 50 percent interest fee or something like that? Did that happen to you when you used your credit card?
@@kennethphong7988 I haven't heard of that, but I do think when you use your credit you won't get the best exchange rate. That's why it was important to get cash the next day. I pretty much paid for everything with cash for the rest of my trip.

@@kennethphong7988 It depends on where you eat, but you could probably do it. I thought I would be spending a lot more, but even a lot of the attractions were either free or cost very little. @@Jamesnu there are a couple of really old trees in key parks around the city where, in summer, it's common seeing people snacking or drinking mate in group underneath it's massive shadow. Hey James!! Let me know if you came here again! I will me pleased to show you other fantastic places! Great to have you here my fiend! I hope you can came back soon!
I don't want to be rude, but you are in one of the best capitals in the world due to its culture and mainly because of its people. If you are going to explore it you have to really do it, I mean, go to cafes and restaurants that are not international chains (i think they are cuter and cheaper, sometimes). go to its parks (Japanese garden) and the "Rosedal" garden, could be some ideas. You also have a lot of museums and soccer stadiums that make this capital distintive from others. Also there is tourist buses to see the city that offer the narration in your native language so you understand what surrounds you, that could be practical i think. You also have bioparks like "Temaiken" , guided walks through the government's own tourism page, which is why they are not that expensive, the buildings that you fell in love with such as the Barolo palace, for example (the most beautiful and emblematic in my opinion, they offer you a guided tour that you can pay on the spot and it's not that expensive, you can go up to its dome and see the whole city, it looks beautiful and you can do this with others ones as "Otto Wulff" or even the cultural center) there is A LOT to do in Bs As. You even have nearby coastal cities such as Mar del Plata (beautiful) but it would be better in summer or spring and you would also have to visit other uniques provinces such as Misiones, Salta, Mendoza, Cordoba that have specific tourist spots that are beautiful and due to inflation and the exchange rate respect to the dollar, arent that expensive for an American, very cheap for such amezing experiences, indeed. I hope you take it as advice not criticism and also I hope that you enjoy your stay in our country, great video!!
Thank you! I was in Buenos Aires for almost two weeks and I ended up doing and seeing many of the places you listed. Although, the only time I got out of the city was to see Tigre. Still, I really enjoyed the city. It just has so much to offer from the architecture, museums, nature, parks and food. I definitely ate better in my days following this one. Thank you for all of the suggestions! I really appreciate the feedback!
Good suggestions. Few tourists ever go to Temaiken. It's not so easy to get to but it's worth it. He mentions Tigre. I wonder if he got to one of the Delta islands. It's not the best season for that, though. He doesn't seem to have seen Recoleta, the most fashionable part of the city. Puerto Madero too.
hey! those napkins are not for washing or cleaning your hands, those are for GRABBING the slice or the empanadas, to avoid the oil get in contact with your fingers, so grab like 4 of those napkins and grab everything with that :)
Leaving the USA, arriving in Buenos Aires and going to have a coffee at Starbucks when you are in the city of the most beautiful and richest coffees in the world, is almost a heresy in the religion of good taste, hahaha, but you are excused because you know how to appreciate good architecture. You need at least 2 weeks to record and get a basic idea of what Buenos Aires is like. Next time you come here you have to go eat at good places, like the parrillas that prepare the best meat in the world. The hamburgers at Mc Donalds Argentina have Argentinian meat, that's the difference. Very good video. see you !!!

Awesome, James! I really need to get to South America. I never sleep on planes, so I get that. When I lived in England I was back and forth multiple times a year and never slept. The architecture most certainly looks beautiful, and under $3 for an opera?! Lincoln Center is doing it wrong! 😂 Safe travels good sir!
Thank you! If my flight wasn't delayed, I might of actually slept, since Buenos Aires was only an hour ahead of NYC, so one wouldn't have to deal with jet lag. Yeah, South America has a lot to offer. I was just blown away from the architecture, food and wine, it was amazing!

Thank you! Yeah, I would definitely like to visit Buenos Aires when it's a bit warmer out, but I still had pretty good weather when I went even though it was a little cold.
Primera quincena de noviembre
Hi James. I will be going to Buenos Aires late August. Just to compare, what month of the year were you there? Thanks.
I was there in June, so it was autumn going into winter there and I had no problem with the weather. It was a little cold, but nowhere near as chilly as it can get in NYC. I was pretty comfortable during my visit.
It's 3 degrees Celcius right at this moment (midnight, july 17). Late August is milder, but still a bit cold.
@@estudiantes68 That's chilly! It didn't get that cold during my visit, but that's still a temperature I can tolerate. I used to live in Chicago and winters there where so cold with a lot of snow.
The description of getting the "second wind" and the thought of being in a new country, far from home is a really great and straightforward description of that feeling :)
Thank you! Sometimes it's hard to put into words just how exciting and special travel can be.

Thank you so much for the wonderfully detailed and informative comment! Indeed! Teatro Colon is an incredible place!
Congratulations for the video, you looked happy! 👍
Thank you! I was very happy and had a great time exploring Buenos Aires.
Excellent! I'm happy to hear that you had a great time! Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much and thank you for the recommendation!
Only one video from BA?😩

Congratulations on just getting through that hot mess of an Opera ... you're a better man than I.
Haha! Yeah, that opera flew right over my head.
Heyy! How did you pay for the cab from the airport to your hotel? Did you exchange a little money at the airport?
Luckily there's a kiosk at the airport that you can book a cab with a credit card. It wasn't the most affordable option, but it was pretty efficient.
@@Jamesnu awesome brotha! And one more thing, it looked like you had a lot of peso from the 300 dollar Blue Rate, can that feed 3 people for 6 days plus Taxi rides ? 😁😂
@@kennethphong7988 It depends on where you eat, but you could probably do it. I thought I would be spending a lot more, but even a lot of the attractions were either free or cost very little. By the end of my trip I was getting the most expensive food on the menu just because I had so much cash that I didn't want to go home with. But I also didn't use taxis very much, instead I would take the subway which was much cheaper.

How did you get tickets for the opera? Just on their website?
Yep, but they also have a box office on site where you can walk up and purchase tickets, but some performances do sell out so that's why I got mine online in advance.
What made you pick Buenos Aires as a destination? Most Americans don't go to Argentina
I want to go everywhere, so it really came down to a place where I can get the most for my money and I was able to get an affordable flight there and everything in the country was very cheap. Plus, the food and wine was a big draw for me.
@@Jamesnu Bariloche and Salta are supposed to be very nice. A lot of people like Mar de Plata too for the beach. Must be winter though this time of year in Argentina
Most Americans don’t visit South America in general. When I was in Brazil I asked the hostel worker about it. She said occasionally you may find a few Californians. For whatever reasons, Europeans tend to be more interested in travels
@@Mongoose-ct6us Yeah, it was winter when I was there, but the temperatures were still pretty nice since it never gets as cold as it does in NYC. @@CosmarArias Yes, that may be what the rings mean, but those were made over a 100 years ago. Ideas have changed about what constitutes what is a continent.
@@Jamesnu youre welcome, and u can come and visit whenever you want, this country has open arms

Solid editing!
Thank you! I wish I would've filmed more during the flight delay situation, but I unfortunately wasn't in the mood.
hey! those napkins are not for washing or cleaning your hands, those are for GRABBING the slice or the empanadas, to avoid the oil get in contact with your fingers, so grab like 4 of those napkins and grab everything with that :)
That makes so much sense! I'll definitely have to do that next time.
Do you speak any Spanish? How would someone that doesn't get along at restaurants, bars shops get by?
I speak a little Spanish, but even without much knowledge of the language one should be able to manage.
2:22 not a new continent, just on the other side 😅
Indeed, but in the US, North and South America are considered to be two different continents.
Very good video. see you !!!
Thank you! Luckily, I did get to eat and drink much better after these first two days. I got to go to some great parrillas and restaurants. I was in Buenos Aires for almost two weeks and really enjoyed it, but I still didn't get to do and see everything that I wanted. Hopefully, I'll be able to come back someday!
Hi, Plaza de Mayo is "May's Plaza" named after the Argentine's revolution.
Indeed! Thanks for sharing!
You can't fool anyone by saying that Starbucks was the closest place with coffee where you were, in Buenos Aires there are literally cafés everywhere. You just have to open your eyes.
You're right. There were cafes everywhere and I enjoyed many of them throughout my trip, but during that day, Starbucks was really close to me and at that point all I wanted was coffee fast.
Casandra, you need to know how an argentinean café looks to find it ... The same goes for bodegones...
Hermosa ciudad
Absolutely!
