    I was waiting for your review on this particular Soundgarden song to be honest and I am really happy to see this review. I want to say that first time hearing the guitar noise you mentioned at the beginning and these blinking swift changing images on the video had disturbed me a lot. However the more you listen to this song the more addictive you become about it. And at some point you just realize that it is just a f***ing masterpiece! It is just a brilliantly arranged chaos. I would recommend you to listen to the drumming separately. There are a few guys that made pretty good covers of it, like "Delta Empire" for example.

    I don't find anything bad about the song only because it's Soundgarden..Its impossible to hate their music. Kim's guitar style may not be the best,but it's underrated as hell.

    • @FoxUnitNell
      @FoxUnitNell 3 года назад +2

      What's really impressive is how odd time signatures never hurt his performances and he was one of the few greats of the 90s doing odd timed songs a lot of time. Sure the guys of dream theater or rush were doing it better, but they had a small set of songs that really only Kim was able to pull off both in technique and in style.

  • @heyskipj
    @heyskipj 2 года назад +7

    So much for soundgarden ever cresting above 8.5! Kim, Ben, or Chris always delivered that sweet, sweet distortion.
    Soundgarden is much less of a "garden" and more like a thorny briar patch. Love it. And loved the review. Solid.

    Holy flashback. This was THE club song in 91/92. And by "club", I mean rock & roll bars. I clearly remember that at the bar I hung out at, they played loud music, and they had about a hundred tv screens around the place that all showed weird cult films, artsy stuff, just whatever the owners of the bar felt like playing - basically anything that wasn't white bread normie stuff, like sports or whatever. It was a really eclectic place...but anyway, this was one of the first songs I remember having the video connected to it, on the cd presumably, so when it came on, all the 100 or so tv screens switched to this video, and at maximum club volume with this epilipsy inducing desert drug psychedelia-soaked video flashing everywhere you looked, it was a complete audio-visual sensory overload, and it was kind of awesome. Yes, even the beginning and the ending. Maybe ESPECIALLY the beginning and the ending. I'm not really a big Soundgarden fan, or "Grunge" fan, or even 90's music fan, but this particular song and video brings back that entire time and place in the best way. So intense, so aggressive, really wiped the floor with most everything else that was happening then. The punks loved it, the rockers loved it, everyone loved it, it was just so over the top and dissonant and bombastic. it was also a pretty massive song, I'm surprised you haven't heard it, huge song by huge band.

    the dissonance in their music is influenced by noise bands of the late 70's/early 80's- Suicide/ Television/Sonic Youth.

    I'm more offended at people who recommend songs like this before the really great underrated songs in a band. And by "great" I mean the most technically interesting and sonically pleasing songs that aren't nearly as popular as the rest. I like this song, don't get me wrong. But I don't love it, and I sure as hell wouldn't recommend it as a showcase for what this band is capable of. If you really dive into the totality of SG's catalouge, this song should be near the bottom of the list for recommendations. It's probably just a popular recommendation because it was on their second most popular album. I'm not trying to shit on the people who love the song because obviously that's subjective, but in my own personal opinion I think you should recommend the really great underdog songs that 50% of Soundgarden fans probably haven't even heard of before, first.

And you could feel Chris' sensivity, his pain feeling judged. He was already lost at an early age. So Sad, that he coulnd't find relief and security. I still can feel, love and miss him! R.I.P. So, David, I’ve enjoyed listening to your reactions since discovering your channel a few days ago. I’m still in awe that you avoided this band when they were blowing up! But whatever… it is what it is. You mentioned being heavily into prog and jazz at the time. So, Soundgarden has always been an amalgamation of everything great about guitar rock. Hard rock, punk rock, psychedelia, goth and heavy metal. Kim Thayil’s influences range from Hendrix, Beck, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Kiss, MC5, The Stooges, The Beatles and everything in between! Soundgarden were always a band that walked a line between beauty and chaos! The chaos is pure rock-n-roll! Most (all that I know) longtime Soundgarden fans love that part of the band! In the early days, their chaos was a thing of beauty and it was all held together by Matt Cameron’s phenomenal drumming!
    I can understand a prog guy not getting the chaos but we love it! I can’t imagine Soundgarden without it! Cheers!

      His solo work would presumingly have more focus on his vocals, from trends of other leads going solo; you could give those a try. Temple of the Dog was a great project too that seems to be getting mid 80s averages and the reason behind the project is a lost Seattle legend so its likely great through out plus has a few eddie vedder appearance too.

    Oh yeah. This Soundgarden. Back in the 90s I liked Pearl Jam better than Soundgarden. I didn't really start to get into them till maybe 2000. I'd forgotten about their highly experimental phase. Is is it my cuppa? No not really. Does that make it bad? Not really. It's a matter of taste. It's just not um organized enough for me personally. I think 8.1 is very generous personally.

Soundgarden were clearly influenced by contemporate alt.rock bands like Sonic Youth (which now I don't know whether I should recommend you listen to them, or warn you of them, but just so you know: they were not a metal band). No other band had those great beginnings and endings, Soundgarden hated genres and being boxed into any kind of one . They hated being called metal and no doubt deliberately did unconventional things which made them all the more heavier. They absolutely dominated the metal scene without even meaning to. None heavier.

    Personally love this song but the first time I heard it, I don’t think I made it 20 seconds in. Appreciate the reaction!
    Honestly, I think being offensive to the ears was the point of the dissonance at the beginning and end. It’s sort of a direct rejection of what was mainstream at the time.

      I believe if studios weren't forcing bands to make media appearances and music videos and had invested in finding new ways to promote bands and their albums instead of seeking get rich quick profits by signing sound a likes to contracts. The best trend in business is rewarding loyalty and for investors to give a smallest fraction of a downfall when people go beyond their worth in a legendary way. This was just not the music industry of the time so I could see why a lot of these early 90s rockers just screwed up their albums and songs with dissonance because they just didn't want to make money for these record companies that were using their gains to dilute the market. I guess these guys could have instead given record contracts and pay outs for publicity to musicians of 30-50s that were not given great contracts.

    If you didn't like the beginning and end..... never ever listen to Black Angels by Kronos quartet. You will pull your hair out..... I did back in 1992 and I'm bald now.

    I feel you, if they wanted to make a sound that was disconcerting then there are ways to do it without making you rip your ears off.

    I’m a Soundgarden fan and watched the whole review. I completely agree. Beginning and end is a bit overkill. Would have been much better if those sections were cut in half.

    I consider myself a Soundgarden fan and I too do not like the intro and outro. That is all!
