I've just had a thought. Garrus is a hell of a sniper and took a rocket to the side of his jaw. I wonder if that's a surreptitious reference to the legendary Simo Hähyä? The deadliest sniper in history, who was taken out of action (temporarily) only after taking an explosive bullet to the side of his jaw.
Never thought about this, but it seems really possible, given that he was defending his position against many enemies and managed to kill them all. Just like Simo.

The difference between them is that Garrus has killed many humans, while Simo only killed communists.
