This is very interesting. I always kinda gave Bioware a lot of crap for how all their "aliens" look so similar to humans (which is so unlikely as to be a completely silly concept). I give them a lot more credit now that I've heard that they were limited by system/design constraints.
Game designer 1: “what does every person , no matter the age, absolutely love?” Game designer 2: “Dinosaurs, Batman, Die Hard 1 & 2”. Game designer 1: “............perfect!”
It's very interesting listening to this guy talk from a designer's perspective instead of a fan's perspective. It kinda shows how fans can sometimes complain without fully understanding the context of how games are made. Other comments on this video illustrate my point.
If turians are anything like birds or avian dinosaurs, they probably do not have phalluses, instead both sexes having a near-identical cloaca. Saurians in general are hard to differentiate between males and females. They are not mammals, so they have no reason to have physiological differences.
"we've been doing concepts on what they look underneath" *1 year later* "OH SHIT GUYS ME3 IS DUE IN 2 WEEKS AND WE NEED A TALI" ...."off to google images?"
having recently played through all three back to back, I have to disagree. I feel that 3 has the best gameplay of the series. Movement is much more fluid and having power cooldowns potentially around 1 second keeps things moving quickly and getting in and out of cover is quick and easy. ME2 feels much stiffer by comparison.
+Blaze28339 Perhaps they should have a female turian squad member in Mass Effect Andromeda who is only romanceable to Male Pathfinders (player characters). That would be interesting to say the least.
+SinDawg030 I think that's a great idea. Turians are my favourite ME race, so having a female turian romance for my character would be perfect. Someone like Nyreen would be interesting.
+Blaze28339 Well look at it from a designers perspective. You have to effectively create a new face model(that's a bird looking alien to boot) that's both similar enough to be classified in the same species yet different enough to stand out as being the opposite gender. His whole "put lipstick on her" was a pretty stupid comment though. Nyreen had a great design, I just wished they'd thought of it sooner.
+Blaze28339 To be fair, the Turians are a militaristic race. Military is stereotypically a place for males. You wouldn't find that many women in the military since the Turian culture is probably male-oriented. You could see female Turians on the citadel as civilians though and sometimes as military personnel, but I don't know what they were thinking, they probably just lacked the creativity at the time to figure out how a female Turian would look, probably more pressing matters were happening.
I always imagined that there was barely any noticeable difference between male and female Turians (Least by human perception) In some deleted conversation you find a Turian who can only tell the difference in humans by the "funny chest bumps" I was personally hoping that the team would have a conversation with a Turian NPC and as they left they'd say "He was nice/annoying" and if garrus was around he'd say "Err ...That was a she." Or garrus thinking a long haired man was a girl or something.
"You know Nihlus. I don’t know if anyone remembers him." As part of the we should have been able to save Nihlus gang, I certainly do. Should have been an option in new game plus, because I am so fast by then that it's impossible not to reach him almost immediately and having him be wheelchair bound after a coma would have been cool.
Garrus is so beast and pro! My fav character and he seemed like a true friend when I was playing ME1, ME2 and ME3. I wish I knew someone that had his personality
As someone who played Mass Effect 3 years after it came out I never understood the hate. Hearing this guy's comments about Tali at the end I can sympathize at least with the Tali face reveal. If they had some concepts, where did they go? I still think all the hate about the ending is a little overrated. It is definitely not a perfect ending, but its not bad. Maybe a little rough considering everything else in the game and trilogy is amazing.
Here's the scenario: You have a character with a hidden face that you're thinking of revealing after 5 years of anticipation. Do you? If you don't, everyone that wanted a reveal will be disappointed. If you do, no face you could come up with could match 5 years of hype, and inevitably a portion of the fanbase will be disappointed, whether because they wanted it to stay a mystery, or because they just imagined that character looking different than the final product. Oh, and also creating the face will stall development in other areas so you need to make the decision before you start. Oh, and you only have a few months to decide and finish. Every day you don't choose hurts the final product. Now, that stock photo is a disaster, I'm not trying to excuse it, but pretending this guy is a liar because of a bad decision is a logical step too far.
well, it looks like they eventually figured it out by the time of mass effect 3. There are female turians hanging out at the silversun strip. And by Mass Effect Andromeda there's a lot of ladies for both the Turians and the Krogan when they didn't used to be shown.
I remember there being a bit of complaints about the Asari basically sharing head shape and just colour differences, but they pretty much did the same with Turians and no one batted an eye, limitations of development budget, I do like how they added more variety gradually throughout the games and we did eventually get to see female Turians.
had a few chuckles throughout the video, a cool guy, but here's a pro tip for you: look up "female turian" on google and you get some really nice fan concepts
As a female fan I would like to say... I couldn't care less for his scarring no matter how bad you guys would've made it xD Garrus is the best bro ever, he''s been with me since the first game!
Specific to what I'm talking about? you see one or two in the assignment N7: Javelin Missiles Launched. You know the one where you have to choose between a colonies residential and spaceport areas? You see one in the opening scene and I think a couple others that you fight.
THEflobalob Actually, I think it's red because of the cybernetics underneath. Shep's scars were red too, after reconstruction. So perhaps all cybernetics are red? No colour choice available for the other races.
Derek Watts sure loves using the word "iconic". If you get the Art of Mass Effect Universe art book, he uses it a lot there, too. It's like his catchphrase.
It's amazing (and pathetic) how BioWare was so creative during the creation of this franchise yet they could do nothing but scratch their heads when it came to making female variants of each species. Only took them 5 years to finally figure it out what a female turian should look like.
That’s common in all sci fi media if you see some animated sci fi shows or movies the males of alien species have very diverse body styles while the women of said species is overly voluptuous and humanly feminine which is exactly what they did with Asari so it’s a miracle that they didn’t do that with Krogan, Turian, Salarians etc.
Ugh I know, right? If turians are based off of birds then why not just research how female birds are different to male birds and go from there? Difference in height? build? coloring? muscle-mass? Even small adjustments would've made a world of difference, I'm sure that as soon as you have a female's voice the audience wouldn't be confused anyway. "Oh, that turian's a girl, huh"
Camila Fayad well just like turians the asari are only one gender as well, you'll notice all asari are female and all turians are male....I kinda like the fact that they did that though, cause it makes their species more interesting.
sobekflakmonkey All turians are not male. There are mentions of female turians before they appear in ME3. For the first two games, the devs made a deliberate decision to not make the effort to have female representation in the turian race. The "what is a female garrus??boobss, lipticks?? too silly!" comment tells us all we need to know about their thought on the matter.
Except that asari were designed to only have one gender from the beginning. Even before Nyreen's design (which I think is brilliant, by the way) there were mentions of female turians even though none made an appearance. And frankly this guy's comment shows laziness at best and sexism at worst. I'm sure he meant nothing bad by it but still. I'm just glad they finally got around to designing a female turian, without giving her pink bows and lipstick *shudder*
Do girls really like Garrus, to be honest, I thought people wouldn't care about Garrus. I love him and he is the chillest character ever. But i didn't know so many people liked him. I am not a girl and i thought no one would like him. I was wrong, lol
JMaster If only you knew how many.... I heard there's a few fanfic too..cough ahem.. I wonder what calibrations those include.. Anywho, I'll be off to calibrate my sleeping habits.
Dewie_DTT still dont know why girls like him, i mean he was cool, and fun. But if i was a girl i have no idea what he'd say. Also he is an alien how could you like him if your a girl?
WELLL.. Mr. JMaster.. Let me explain -smirks-. Garrus is a guy, who backs you up till the end, is willing to walk through hell with you, just to.. you know, be there for ya.. He is trustworthy friend who, at least tries to always have something supportive to say, encouraging. He believes in you and stands behind you , when the world is-, quite literally, being torn apart around you. (") Oh you already died once? They probably just pissed you off more, and now you're going to kick their asses. (" - yes, I know this isn't the exact quote). He has style, and skills. NOW for the alien part. WELL. While he becomes, oh so familiar with you (friend-wise), he's still got the unfamiliar, mysterious part if him: The fact that he's not a human, but is a totally different specie. He's something "new". I find his looks interesting-, when I say looks, and interesting, I mean it literally. Humans are something we've got used to seeing. Their bodies are.. ours, "duh" xD. Garrus.. well, I'm sure many girls, both younger and older, would like to-- WITHOUT MEANING IT in a dirty way, (maybe a little?) explore. Since, we've not seen turians that much around, I personally am curious of.. what their skin is like ( the feel, humans skin is mostly "smooth"... what about Turians?), what's.. well I'll leave it to that. I THINK I have mentioned pretty much all aspects. Long story short: His personality and loyaltyness (is that correctly spellt? D: ), his intelligence (not saying other crew members weren't intelligent.) .. Thane , I have to say, has same aspects. Although he may not be always encouraging etc. he's more of a .. "sad character"?.. Both characters have a big fangirl base, Thane being a mysterious, skillful assassin alien, (who causes hallucinations through kisses, LOL), Garrus, being the ultimate badass best friend/mate, who you just want to take everywhere with you, just to kick ass. Not all women are "too girly" to want to go sniping with Garrus. Hell. I would love to go sniping with Garrus. I'm SORRY FOR THE LONG COMMENT. I hope I made some sense. Lemme know , if I didn't.
Umm.. Well I wouldn't know about the "best friend who's banging your sister" thing, cause.. well.. I'm not a guy, and..this situation has not happened. Mostly, probably ,cause I don't have a sister :P. Plus I think a lot of us femmes are really, really.. picky. I myself am..far from liking such things as.. Bieber, One Direction etc. I'm actually annoyingly picky. Also, they made people like Jacob to cheat on you, if you romanced him and, I did romance Kaidan, but he's.. hmm.. he has his own good qualities.. and then he's got his.. hmm.. Not so attractive qualities (not talking about looks). But as I said, I romanced him on one or two playthroughs. Before I got M.E3 and when I got M.E3. I just got M.E3 while back, so now I replayed M.E2 so I can see what laughs I can have romancing Garrus. Also, picking Garrus on missions more, now, instead of Kaidan. Had a good laugh at one mission already, thanks to the funny comments.
"What are you supposed to do with a female Turian, put lipstick on it?" "(If we blow Garrus' face of,) female fans will be pissed." God, that guy really *does* manage to piss me off.
^Unproductive sjw that does not contribute to anything and only criticizes everything, gets triggered by everything. Claims they are the tolerant side, can't even tolerate peoples casual opinions
I like that the females don't need to be vastly different or 'easy to tell' like, they are aliens they don't need to conform exactly to general human expectations. Some likeness is bound to happen-you can't stop being human and that will affect how the created character turns out but..yeah. On a point related to the video-I like Garrus
That was a PC port bug. Dunno if they ever fixed it. I used texmod, with Garrus's facial texture from Mass Effect 2 before he got shot, which directly inserts the texture into the game. Made Garrus the sexy beast he deserves to be.
boobs and lipstick do not equal female. They should have put more thought into how females of an entirely different species, which may have very different methods of procreation and courtship, would look. For example, if they wanted to go all the way with eagles as inspiration for the turians, the females would have looked exactly the same, but bigger.
What they actually came up with was fine, imo, but the designer's comments are a little ridiculous. I mean they said it themselves: Turians are basically raptors. Just look at actual raptors and there's your answer.
There's a pic of a female turian in on the wiki on the page about Turians from a comic book...I think it looks terrible. The fan concepts look SO much better, much more feminine.I'm beginning to think BW should just have concept art contests. Most popular one wins or whichever they want to choose wins. Would solve the Quarian and Female Turian issue.
they can't make a female turian because they can't find out how make up will work on them, really?, REALLY?, is this the reason why thy can't make female turians?, what about tifferent coloration of scales, weird ass plumage on their heads, smaller mandibles, ANYTHING. "whoops sorry we can't put make up and boobs on it so we can't make it" i love how casual he is about it too wow
They designed female turians after this. One is in the Omega DLC and the other is in the Citadel DLC. They're kinda hot... compared to the male turians :)
***** it's not really difficult at all considering the immense and talented team of concept artists, 3d modelers, creative directors/art directors, and such. i doubt there would be any trouble considering these guys are a constantly working think-tank, they either were planning the female turian for a future release or they didn't think they were important at the time. they've already had the template design the really didn't have much to risk unless they deviated from the initial design, and considering all they've done was just making them slimmer, smaller mandibles, and taking the horns out it shows how little they did to make them different from the male turian, I doubt that took weeks or months to figure out ( and most birds to have gender traits that separate them from each other, due to evolutionary needs, and keep in mind turians are not completely birds they're anthorpomorphic in design, they do hold a lot of human characteristics, that and wrex mentioning a turian's left nut, so there's sexual dimorphism there i guess?), my initial guess that the female character design didn't make it through the pipeline when the game was out or they kept it as an afterthought
"The ending? Yeah, I'll tell you the ending!" *Proceeds to tear up all his character design he spent 8 years developing* "That's the ending! I'm 100% serious." *Poker face*
I would argue that mass effect 1&2 have equally phenomenal stories. They just have a vastly different approach to telling those stories. Me3 had the best gameplay though, I think they put a the role playing back into the franchise after me2 stripped it away to refine combat. me2 had the biggest leap forward in combat, but me3 just feels so much better to play in comparison
A lot of hate down through the comments. "Creating a female Turian would be easy." "Why haven't you created a face for the Quarians?" Are you good at creating art? Can you sketch up a female Turian real quick, can you create a Quarian's face? If you aren't artistic them you should stay out of the business of an artist. You have no idea how hard it is to do some things. Once you create several ideas, you are burnt out on new ideas. If you aren't an artist then you should have no say in how things should be done in the art department.
Ascendant His jokes or sarcasm remind me of some the stuff said between artists when experiencing a late night crunch. Saying throw tits on the character or put lipstick on was more just a half-serious suggestion made by a artist to bring their mental state a laugh or a chuckle. This is something that is lost upon those comments at the top. Having experienced such moments of pure exhaustion before I found the lead artist very relatable.
@@thepunisher4356 The most annoying part is that he makes the light mocking tone completely clear by the end of it: "Come on guys, *take this serious"*
Right sure thing Derek Watts. How would you even do females. Like, just slap some makeup on a male human and you have a female right? Such casual sexism throughout this entire thing. "The female fans would be mad" Jeez buddy.

+MrTwhispers make it happen
Velociraptors had feathers.
I took Garrus on every mission possible in ME1,2 and 3. The others, were rejected. I bet Garrus thought I was obsessed with him. Which I am.
Game designer 1: “what does every person , no matter the age, absolutely love?”
Game designer 2: “Dinosaurs, Batman, Die Hard 1 & 2”.
Game designer 1: “............perfect!”
It's very interesting listening to this guy talk from a designer's perspective instead of a fan's perspective. It kinda shows how fans can sometimes complain without fully understanding the context of how games are made.
Other comments on this video illustrate my point.
I enjoy having filters sometimes. I just don't want to see a picture of the Turian "calibrating" his phalic muscle.
DDDD:
CDR. Javik Filters off! Hehehe!
+CDR. Javik The penis is actually not a muscle. Otherwise there would be a tons of people lifting stuff with it.
If turians are anything like birds or avian dinosaurs, they probably do not have phalluses, instead both sexes having a near-identical cloaca.
Saurians in general are hard to differentiate between males and females. They are not mammals, so they have no reason to have physiological differences.
"we've been doing concepts on what they look underneath"
*1 year later*
"OH SHIT GUYS ME3 IS DUE IN 2 WEEKS AND WE NEED A TALI"
...."off to google images?"
This is fake, Garrus is a real person.
yeah... live for atleast 200 more years, let the the first contact war happen...
garrus can wear nihlus' armour...it took me a few playthroughs to actually loot it, though.
"The ending? I'll tell you the ending!" IF ONLY WE KNEW T_T
having recently played through all three back to back, I have to disagree. I feel that 3 has the best gameplay of the series. Movement is much more fluid and having power cooldowns potentially around 1 second keeps things moving quickly and getting in and out of cover is quick and easy. ME2 feels much stiffer by comparison.
"Tali is the most popular than Garrus"
I've never heard such a claim before.
We love Tali but we love Garrus even more, he's a bro.
"We usually try to avoid the females cos... what are you supposed to do with a female turian?"
Le sigh.
Blaze28339 Yeah, she was such a wasted opportunity as a character. Plus she had really cool eyes and slapped Cerberus bitches around like a baws.
"the ending? Ill tell ya the ending!"
Watts is definitely the paragon over at B-ware.
"What do you do with a female Turian? Put a lipstick on her?"
That's pretty much how female Krogans look in Andromeda...
for fuck sake, i want a mass effect with garrus as protagonist!
i've NEVER thought of them as being a "bird" type of race, when i first saw Garrus i thought they evolved from a type of insect or something
Garrus is so beast and pro!
My fav character and he seemed like a true friend when I was playing ME1, ME2 and ME3.
I wish I knew someone that had his personality
Ah yes ,"The ending " we have dismissed that claim.
Edgy
Garrus is the guy who I’d want to go the bar with after all the shit we’ve been through
My favorite part was Darth Malak hanging out on the wall.
You did more concepts of Nihilus because despite him being alive with you for half an hour tops, he's still so awesome xD
What you saw was the “fixed” ending. The original was understandably hated.
1:26
EA: “looks fine. release”
Using a stock photo for Tali's face, yeah, that is very creative and caring.
**FACEPALM**
@@DiggitySlice Only person calling anyone a liar is you.
oh god somebody give me more about Garrus, this was a fantastic design video :D
Answer: They're all male!
But then they created the Citadel DLC...
Omega DLC*
Spike6Pixel Every ME3 DLC*
Joker But they were first shown in the Omega DLC.
Saren Arterius looks quite different to all the other turians
is this what the process looked like when God made us?
Garrus is seriously my favorite Mass Effect character.
"What are you supposed to do with a female turian"
Me: hentai
well, it looks like they eventually figured it out by the time of mass effect 3.
I love his scars, they did perfect on em ^__^
"We draw the alien without chlothing to understand the anatomy"
Must be really fun to create the Asari.
Here's an idea for bioware to consider. Mass Effect Online, where you could play as turians, krogans, asari.
had a few chuckles throughout the video, a cool guy, but here's a pro tip for you: look up "female turian" on google and you get some really nice fan concepts
Thank you for this calibrating badass!
that son of a bird is the most sexies bitch in mass effect
*fangirlehehe*
I would have been happier if they put one of those concept pieces he was talking about for Tali's picture in ME3
As a female fan I would like to say...
Why is garrus' scar red ut his blood is blue?
THEflobalob flesh
THEflobalob Actually, I think it's red because of the cybernetics underneath. Shep's scars were red too, after reconstruction. So perhaps all cybernetics are red? No colour choice available for the other races.
+THEflobalob Why is my scar white, but my blood is red?
1183314 -Flesh- skin*
Everyone's flesh is red...ish his/her skin is white
Derek Watts sure loves using the word "iconic". If you get the Art of Mass Effect Universe art book, he uses it a lot there, too. It's like his catchphrase.
Garrus fan-girl here!
this is so good, this would be good if it was 3d printed
It's amazing (and pathetic) how BioWare was so creative during the creation of this franchise yet they could do nothing but scratch their heads when it came to making female variants of each species. Only took them 5 years to finally figure it out what a female turian should look like.
I think your comment is the pathetic one
That’s common in all sci fi media if you see some animated sci fi shows or movies the males of alien species have very diverse body styles while the women of said species is overly voluptuous and humanly feminine which is exactly what they did with Asari so it’s a miracle that they didn’t do that with Krogan, Turian, Salarians etc.
thumbs up for the malak kotor foamy thing on the wall!
literally: "we're not creative or imaginative enough to create female models...what the hell, they don't matter anyway!"
Anna Charlotte well...nobodies really complaining about a lack of male asari :/ whatever reason they have is whatever.
КОТОЯ in the back?! :)
it's an iconic phrase for derek watts
P.S. I didn't know the - marks would add a line over the darn smirk-.-'... Owell.
Check out my Mass Effect piano medley, featuring songs from Mass Effect 1 and 2! You'll love it! :)
"What are you supposed to do with a female Turian, put lipstick on it?"
"(If we blow Garrus' face of,) female fans will be pissed."
God, that guy really *does* manage to piss me off.
^Unproductive sjw that does not contribute to anything and only criticizes everything, gets triggered by everything. Claims they are the tolerant side, can't even tolerate peoples casual opinions
I found a troll. ^
gorkem you neckbeard chill out
0noregrets0 what is he meant to do to differentiate male turians to females? What?
He's a fucking moron.
1.10 - "Putting lipstick on a Turian" is now part of my active vocabulary.
''They don't look like birds, they look like cats!''
I like that the females don't need to be vastly different or 'easy to tell' like, they are aliens they don't need to conform exactly to general human expectations. Some likeness is bound to happen-you can't stop being human and that will affect how the created character turns out but..yeah. On a point related to the video-I like Garrus
They're called "jokes" people. Maybe you've heard of them.
That was a PC port bug. Dunno if they ever fixed it. I used texmod, with Garrus's facial texture from Mass Effect 2 before he got shot, which directly inserts the texture into the game.
Made Garrus the sexy beast he deserves to be.
They had nude turians and failed to include it in romance scenes. Sad.
No they didn’t the designing process always start with the character in question being nude but not anatomically correct
Garrus is by far the best war buddy Shepard ever had !!
best character in mass effect hands down !
boobs and lipstick do not equal female.
There is a female turian in the Citadel DLC ^^
I know. I saw. :P
+Scarbs And in the Omega DLC
Catherine Johnson I think whatever he said about turian females went over your head.
Hoping the next game is chock full of Garrus moments! Especially cute Garrus and Shep moments (Yknow if Shep is alive and junk)
That's some serious calibration.
"The ending? Sure, I'll tell you the ending."
"Don't say anything more!"
Oh the irony.
I appreciate the video but can this wait? I'm in the middle of some calibrations
they can't make a female turian because they can't find out how make up will work on them, really?, REALLY?, is this the reason why thy can't make female turians?, what about tifferent coloration of scales, weird ass plumage on their heads, smaller mandibles, ANYTHING. "whoops sorry we can't put make up and boobs on it so we can't make it" i love how casual he is about it too wow
They designed female turians after this. One is in the Omega DLC and the other is in the Citadel DLC.
They're kinda hot... compared to the male turians :)
chill out...damn
***** THAT i can understand, but unfortunately, that wasn't his main concern according to this video
***** "turbans"
Is is sad, just how much I'm obsessed with Mass Effect?
"The ending? Yeah, I'll tell you the ending!"
*Proceeds to tear up all his character design he spent 8 years developing*
"That's the ending! I'm 100% serious."
*Poker face*
Wow you people are deranged
Nate U Exactly.
@@thepunisher4356 The most annoying part is that he makes the light mocking tone completely clear by the end of it: "Come on guys, *take this serious"*
Derek has a really nice voice. Wonder if he ever tried voicing someone in a game.
Right sure thing Derek Watts. How would you even do females. Like, just slap some makeup on a male human and you have a female right? Such casual sexism throughout this entire thing. "The female fans would be mad" Jeez buddy.
Mike Percival ok how would you do a female turian?
That isn't what female turians look like. ME3 shows us the first ones, they are equal height but without frill.
