- Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, once again breaks down the weaponry of the TimeSplitters franchise, including a silenced Luger pistol, the Walther WA2000 sniper rifle, and a particularly cursed hybrid of a Desert Eagle and a Beretta 92 pistol.
In the latest video in the Firearm Expert Reacts series, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of the TimeSplitters franchise and compares them to their real-life counterparts.

I thought u would add a 2021 after that one.
Hah and he calls himself an expert. XD
These are the real questions
The things I find myself saying in these surprise even myself.

I love that Jonathan can say "Those do exist, we have one" with so much confidence. Just flexing the fact that he works in a museum lol
"Behold, the Luger with a silencer on it, or a supressor if you're pendatic, and I am but It depends on what mood I'm in"
This is the most British thing I've ever heard. I can imagine Q saying this to James Bond while showing him the gadgets for a mission.
@@apgreckless8563 The second funny part is your near identical profile
@@Lemon91500 the third funny part is the industrial revolution and its consequences
And now I want to see Jonathan portray Q in future Bond films. Welp.
right? let's argue about terminology. also, silencer works, just because the patent application for the maxim silencer (1902) did call it that. i have to wonder why 20s wouldn't use them - they had to have been around
Jonathan does have major Q vibes
I did not expect TimeSplitters but hell yes I will take it!

"OH YEAH! - I'm READY!!!"
They seemed to have used the Homefront version which is a terrible idea because the sound effects are really weird and wrong.
I hope you were wearing the hat as you made that comment
My childhood franchise i loved to play virus with friends on self made maps 😁
What I love about Jonathan's videos is he's not just a firearms expert, he has wonderful insight into video game mechanics. Developers should listen to him.
I love when something about a gun isn't quite right, but he still understands why the devs might've done it that way. either balancing, looks or other gameplay reasons.
Johnathan should write a book "designing guns for videos games"
Totally agree.👍
@@jlebrech Yeah.
Apparently him and Ian from forgotten weapons have helped game devs in the past, like battlefield, get some of their weapons right.
the fact that he considers gameplay reasons makes him the best expert in history
"with a silencer on it. Or a suppressor, if you're pedantic - which I am but it depends on which mood I'm in"
I love him so much.
Holy shit, never would I have ever imagined that TimeSplitters would get this kind of recognition! Greatest FPS games I've ever played on my PS2 hands down.
It'd be pretty cool to see Jonathan react to the BioShock series weapons and what they look like stock and then upgraded.
HELL YES
Definitely would love to see that
I feel like he'd bring up the dardick for the extended mag revolver
This was the comment I came here to make
Ohhh that's a very good idea. Fully support this.
19:30 The darts aren’t filled with compressed air, they are filled with chemicals that counteracts with the blood system causing you to explode, kinda like what Blade did to Deacon Frost in the first Blade movie.
killing floor 2 would be a great weapon breakdown. They put alot of work into them and I would love to see his thoughts.
I second this. It has a nice mix of actual real world guns, fictional but plausible weapons, bizarre DIY jobs and off the wall sci-fi stuff. Just everything he could want for an episode.
4 for this
DO IT.
Having just gotten back into KF2, I was thinking the same thing.
i was literally spamming about this game, and no one cared, someone else says it and now they do. Just wow!
I love Timesplitters so much, hopefully rewind gets released smoothy cuz the series is so good!

Timesplitters 2 has such a good feel to the weapons, making them first and foremost fun to shoot with. He didn't go into the sound of the guns almost at all, except for the sci-fi guns. Wouldn't know if the modern and past weapon sounds are realistic (probably not 😅) but they sound crunchy!
"...or suppressor if you're pedantic. Which I am, it just depends what mood I'm in"
Brilliant.
Sounds British to me
The rotating on the minigun is its alt-fire mode. It pre-spools the gun, but keeps it from fully cooling down, so it'll overheat faster.
Oh an another series he’d have a field day with, although have fun finding recent footage, would be the classic No One Lives Forever.
holy shit I **just** had the same thought when I clicked this. The NOLF series has some hilarious weapons and would also be a great opportunity for Jonathan to show of the Royal Armouries collection of weird spy-stuff made by SOE/OSS during ww2\early cold war.
They record their own footage I believe
I only found out about NOLF a few days ago and now it's like everyone's mentioning it.
like the dilisle carbine that ejects the casing before the bolt is racked
Well, NOLF is abandonware, so its not that hard to get a copy. lol
Speaking of the combat rifle from Deus Ex, the new Deus Ex games would be great to analyze. Guns are fairly believable for >10 years from now and the combat rifle fires flechettes so it'd be cool to see what Johnathan could share about flechette weapons
My fellow Deus Ex boy. I love the designs of those guns. They're totally overdesigned for real world use, but for the aesthetic they're super cool.
@@Vladiator About time we see another DX fan around here I'm sick of suggesting Mankind Divided to everyone without them knowing what it is
Deus Ex? I am a fan too, although I didn’t get the chance to play Mankind Divided just yet. I think the first game’s weapons were the best, but I also liked the weapons from Human Revolution. Invisible War had the most forgettable designs, however.
@@superplayerex2431 You gotta get into Mankind Divided as soon as you can it was so good and it goes on sale for super cheap!
@@damiang.9884 Sorry, but I literally cannot play that game. My PC is far too weak for that game to run well enough to be at least playable. I tried it before, and it just lags so much that it ends up freezing and crashing right after making my weapon choice in the chopper at the very beginning, so I think I’ll have to wait until years later when I’ll be able to get a new PC that’s powerful enough to run the newer games smoothly.
I honestly can't explain why I find these videos so fascinating and almost addictive, but seeing a realistic take on video game weapons whilst also discussing the understanding of video game mechanics and limitations is so pleasing. Please tell Jonathan I will protect him at all costs
The fact that the last weapon invokes a reaction that's anywhere near "yeah, that one's actually plausible", is hilarious! Thanks for the video.
There are three series that I feel like could be very interesting as parts of this series: Half-Life, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Crysis. Would love to see any of those!
he needs to do deus ex's guns so he can complain about the awful plasma pistol in that game
I want F.E.A.R.
I love that your profile is JC Denton and you didn't recommend Deus Ex

@@jcdenton9614 tbh the cyberpunk videos he did were the most enjoyable part of that game for me
I would like to see Jonathan giving his thoughts about the weapons of Killing Floor 2 as ive always liked how they depicted their gunhandling there
The different reload animations for higher skill levels is a super cool detail
When he was talking about the overheating mechanic, my first thought was the plasma rifle from halo. I can't believe he hasn't reacted to the weapons from halo yet. I had to check if he had because it seems like an obvious one. That would be an awesome one to see.
"If your pedantic. And I am, depending on the mood I'm in."
stuff like this is why I love Jonathan
Fun fact for Jonathan: The P90 has a 64 round capacity as a reference to GoldenEye which was on the Nintendo 64 - since the founders of Free Radical Design were all ex-Rare employees who'd worked on GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.
Yeah the first game even has the same sound effects as goldeneye
hell yes, timesplitters, i love this series and cant wait to hear what Jonathan thinks
I see timesplitters and I click like. Patiently waiting for the new one.
Exactly
The new one still coming? I almost forgot about it too. XD
@@GhostChild808 THQ Nordic bought the rights and some of the og developers are currently looking for a team to work on it. They are now Free Radical Design if I am not mistaken.
@@dootslayer3907 Many of the devs I do believe are indeed working under the name of Free Radical Design again now, so it's only a matter of time. However the most important question in my mind is: Remaster, remake or new entry?
@@dootslayer3907 I get the feeling its back to being on the playstation again. So which means, im stuck on the xbox. XD
Every time I see a P90 the Stargate series theme song starts to play in my head.
I'd absolutely love to see him have a look at Perfect Dark's weaponry, including the FarSight, Laptop Gun, Grenade with Pinball Proximity, the DataDyne guns with the lock-on feature, could be a lot of fun
This! Screw Golden Eye. Perfect Dark was the perfect N64 shooter. Uhh.... no pun intended. Just such a great game with tons of interesting guns. I hope they're able to get Jonathan to look at that some day soon
Hell yeah, I agree. He's gonna be so bewildered, it's gonna be amazing
Most of all, I'd love to see what Jonathan makes of the Cyclone, with its reload that passes the 50-round ammunition storage entirely through and out before a single shot's fired (apparently a clip in the purest sense, not a magazine) and a firing mode that auto-fires until the weapon's empty and without any way to stop it firing once it's started.
@@Dorian-_-Gray I love how silly it is. I actually thought of a possible justification. Since it doesn't drop any casings when it fires, I thought maybe it's actually some type of energy weapon and the magazine is a battery that charges the gun when it scans through. I guess I don't really know what it's firing if that's the case...but that was my best guess!
I was thinking the same thing. I remember fondly the Cyclone's "magazine discharge" function (as Dorian Gray mentions above).
Actually Johnathan, in Timesplitters 2 you're not holding the guns with ANY hands - both your hands are completely invisible. (This is obvious on guns like the SPAS-12)
The reason for this is because, with the insane number of playable characters in the game, it was a way to avoid having to make a hundred different hand models. However, they did do this for the sequel, Future Perfect.
The miniguns altfire in this game makes the minigun rotated constantly
The original version of the minigun from the original TimeSplitters game rotated as it fired like real world miniguns, was probably held in one hand, and could be dual-wielded, so I suppose in that way it's like more of an uzi or something?
i gotta say: i think what makes Jonathan one of the more fun real world experts to watch reacting to video game equivalents of his field of work is that he not only brings his own real world knowledge, but that he also brings forth the very mechanics by which the game rules itself and shows to 'know' videogame guns as much as he knows real guns
he isn't oblivious of how things work on the games and isn't at all against following the rules that the games put forth and giving his take and thoughts on what he is seeing rather than trying to directly translate it into real world when that just, won't work
for someone who only sees the video 1 time when presented with it and instantly starts speaking on detail of what he has just seen, moreover of having this beautifully calm yet funny way of expressing his thoughts and keeping what he is talking about interesting...
i just love the work of this man, this is a museum i need to visit at least once while this man is still alive just to be able to hear him speak of a gun that actually works like a gun instead of having a cartoon monkey for a sight.
Right, the usual requests out of the way. Please please PLEASE do an episode on payday 2. Johnathan will have lots of fun with the various guns and upgrades and I’ll finally stop banging on about it every weekend. And please do an episode on Johnathan’s shirt collection too. I always look forward to seeing what new awesome shirt he has on this time.
Ohhhh. I like that idea. Heh .
I agree, they should probably do multiple episodes as well, considering how much guns payday 2 has
Oh yes.
Same, 100% agreed
Payday is very wacky and it’d be fun seeing him breakdown the weird attachments and mods
CURSED PAYDAY GUNS
I love timesplitters future perfect. Can’t wait for a remaster some day.
Do the guns from Doom or Unreal Tournament. It would be interesting and probably hilarious to see him breakdown some over-the-top fantasy/sci-fi guns.
The best decision gamespot ever made was starting this series with our great firearms expert Jonathan! I love these, please keep them coming!
5:50 In TimeSplitters 3, there is an alternate fire mode that keeps the barrels spooled up, but that eats up a portion of the overheating bar, so there is a gameplay tradeoff
It's exactly the same in TS2
Timesplitters, just so happens to be one of my favorite series. Thanks for this.
I would love to see Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. It got real(M202), somewhat real(Musket/G11) and a lot of fun weapons(Cardboard Tank) in a ten years old mobile game.
But also Halo, Borderlands and ArmA3 are a must do when talking about video game guns.
I think MGSV or MGS3 would be better
@@actually-will1606 i haven't played mgs3, but i prefer PW>V. also i dont remember V having the description menu for each weapon as well as a model to look at. thats why i suggest PW. although a look at the whole series would also work

Covering the mgs games weapons would be awesome, mgs 2 had surprising realistic weapons. Even the first mgs had charmingly chunky representations.

I recommend the Red Faction games as a future series to be reviewed. Good mixture of modern and modern styled guns as well as futuristic weapons.
Oh my god, please
One of the best series ever! Love playing split screan
Just realized that a lot of clips come from the Homefront port of TimeSplitters 2. Neat choice! The firearms analysis is eye-opening - it shows how stylized the weapons are in the TS games and what real-life equivalents they have, if any.
Time splitters was that game🔥I remember going to my friends house and playing it for hours. Good times lol

Could we get Jonathan reacting to weapons from the Titanfall franchise? It’d be a nice change of pace from all the real world guns.
Yeah, either Titanfall or Apex would be lovely. Or both, since Apex guns are just updated versions of Titanfall guns in-universe.
Even just to speculate on how they would best work. Pure energy weapons, energy actuated weapons, traditional ballistic weapons, . . . oh, and weapons used by giant mechs
Best part is that there are some real world weapons handing on like the Ak (flatline) and the M14 (g2a series and the g7 scout)
Would be really fun if he peices together that the flatline is an AK and then sees were the magazine goes
Futuristic weapons are fucking lame af and only a soyjack man child would suggest such a thing

I find his breakdowns fascinating, what a great discovery in this guy. I binge watched all these break downs just for his commentary.
I'm waiting for the borderlands reaction cause there is quite a *few* weapons in that game series. I'm more than happy to sit here for a few hours.
That Spinigun barrel.
problem with the borderlands games is that there are too many unique firearms to cover even if they split it episodically.
Johnathan is the perfect person for this segments since he knows all the pop culture references in these games, to other games and movies too!
ey, another one of these! these are so fun to watch because of johnathans reactions to these wacky guns that we normalized from playing the games for so long. keep up the great work!
Missed opportunity here - that red weapon with the monkey that unfolds actually has an alt-fire mode; you can use the scope-thing to see enemies through walls (heat signatures) and shoot them through those as well (if I remember correctly). However, in the campaign you only make use of it during one mission really, and if you mess up the stealth-section, you go guns blazing. Also, the syringe-weapon is used during the story to kill invincible mutants, injecting them with something that makes them explode. Yet another weapon from the campaign that kind of loses its main purpose in multi-player.
Edit: Looks like my memory is a bit faulty. People down below have told me that the weapon in this video (monkey one) is actually not the one that shows up during the campaign (which sadly cannot shoot through walls), but instead a different one you can unlock. Well, what can I say, it has been about 17 years.
that's actually a completely different weapon from the monkey gun. the monkey gun was likely a reskinned model, since who cares its a joke gun anyway.
You're thinking of the Mag-Charger, it's a separate weapon from the Monkey Gun (The Monkey Gun being a reskin you unlock from doing a specific challenge in Arcade).
It works differently in the campaign, the scope only highlights electronic signatures (such as robots or security cameras) and it can't shoot through walls, but in Arcade/Mapmaker it functions exactly as you described, which is also how the Farsight works in Perfect Dark if I'm not mistaken
You are thinking of the Mag-Charger, also the Mutants are actually vulnerable to every weapon, just the Syringe gun got them down more effectively.
I do really love how the Mag-Charger worked from a gameplay point of view, i wish it had been given a buff or some sort of utility for multiplayer where the monkey gun was always a much more fun example.
a fun thing is both guns actually resemble the magpul folding gun/fmg (essentially a folding glock rifle conversion.... thing?) Awesome non the less.
I'd love to see an episode on Reciever 2. It's got super detailed weapon manipulation and malfunctions that the player needs to know how to operate a gun to be able to clear
Yeah. Not a lot of guns but really well made
Gosh i love Jonathan, hope to visit the royal armories some day.
"You were supposed to break down weapons not be broken by them!"
I’d love to see a weapon breakdown of Payday 2, because it’s guns feel and handle pretty well, and animations still hold up really well for a 2013 game
With the upcoming sequel would Jonathon consider reviewing the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series?
He would have a field day with the Tunder and the TRs 301
at 14:20 you can see the bolt (harpoon) model is tapered towards the rear, which leads me to believe they are telescoped when in the magazine.
A moment of silence for Jonathan's sanity
May it rest in peace
The rocket launcher at 20:36 is loosely inspired by ED-209, there is a clip when it is chasing robocop and it fires a rocket - some piece of tech rotates forward before the rocket fires. I know because I built a lot of the guns for timespiltters 2 and 3.
I’d love to see a reaction to some of Destiny 2’s weaponry. There are a few designs that are really reminiscent of actual weaponry as well as completely off the wall weapon designs.
If you look closely at the harpoons, they actually telescope. There are several steps on the harpoon body, and each segment is thinner than the one in front of it. I always assumed the harpoons have an internal spring and that's what propels them. Supporting this, harpoons can be recovered and reloaded.
Man, I haven't played this game in years. It needs to come out on the PC.

The TimeSplitters 2 Grenade Launcher is vaguely reminiscent of the Manville Gas Gun from the 1930's, just in 40mm with an artillery mechanism blended in.
Timesplitters 2 is legitimately the best FPS ever created, and nobody can convince me otherwise.
Was that the one with the clown and hand face character from the Multiplayer modes?
OMG! I absolutely love TimeSplitters and Jonathan. This here is a match made in heaven!
I think he's reacted to the Monkey Gun like anyone reacts to the Monkey Gun.
"What is... This "
The thing with the model is its based on the Mag Charger, which is from the same level as the super high tech pdw/coffee machine opening rifle. It shoots energy beams, it unfolds
The monkey gun is that model, but just dumps all its ammo with one trigger pull no backsies, so that's also ridiculous
I always found that weapon to be annoying. It's basically a one shot kills weapon, but you have to constantly keep your aim to get the the kill. If you fuck up your aiming and the target lives, then you die. Even if you manage to kill your target, their teammates can just slaughter you. It's like a 1to1 or 0to1 KD ratio gun.
Both the Mag Charger and the Monkey Gun are based somewhat on guns from the previous Free Radical game Perfect Dark, the FarSight XR-20, which can see and shoot through walls, and the Cyclone, which can dump the entire mag in one trigger pull.
Lol his lil grin when he talks about the underfolding AK stock 😁
I'd like to see reactions to Perfect Dark weapons, another game by these developers, Rare. Guns like the Magsec 4, Cyclone, Laptop Gun. SO many cool guns in that game.
8:50 this weird revolver type grenade launcher reminds me of the Hawk MM-1.
Seen near the end of the Terminator 2 when the swat team storms the building, Arnold picks of the Hawk MM-1 smoke launcher and fires it at the cops.
I'd love to see Jonathan's thoughts on guns from the halo series, in particular from ODST as it's more relatable to normal human scale
So agree. At very least the weapons from Halo CE where it all started, Halo Reach due to a more gritty, grounded and realistic take a d Halo 5 due to the sheer varity of weapons you can play around it, testing tjem in Forge
You just gave life one of the most underrated franchise since 2005
I've been letting you know down in the comment section that I'd like to see Titanfall 2 featured on this show for a while now.
It has a wide mix of fairly grounded and outlandishly sci-fi designs to check out, including the particularly giant guns fitted to the mechs.
I think it's a bit of a treasure trove of guns to break down. Would be fun.
Yessss, Titanfall. I wanna see him reacting to the Charge Rifle and the Thermite Launcher (which are totally because these are interesting guns and not because I use them a lot)
Only thing I would note is that, in lore, the cartridge the dart is delivering is delivering liquid, and it's some sort of chemical reaction that causes the explosion. It's explained by one of the scientists you meet in the level in which you acquire one
I'd love to see him react to EYE: Divine Cybermancy's guns. It has some really interesting weapons, among them an SMG with two fire modes: full auto and fuller auto.
09:50 - perhaps they're blank cateridges used to launch a grenade round of some kind?
I wasnt thinking anyone would bring up timesplitters anymore but goddamn I am so happy they did
Just a heads up- A fan has been working for years on a remake of the Trilogy called "Rewind". Check it out.
It's always been a team effort, not just a single person. I'm surprised it managed to last this long with how many people have come and gone over the years, as well as the change in engine.
The progress is so slow it will never come out unless they get a huge team quick. And if the rumors of an official new entry are true, they will probably get shut down. Sad.
Actually they won't
Rewind is surely gonna be released before the new free radical gets theirs out as well
They have a decent team of almost 30 developers
Their progress is immense and counting
He’s pretty spot on with the smg from around the 15:00 minute part of the video, since the game says it is not fit for the time period and must have been custom built, and the people who built in in the game are people from the future

I'd be especially curious at his reaction to the AT lances.
If you want a military armorer's insight as well, Mikeburnfire's playthrough has got you covered.

I'm still waiting for him to do Borderlands 3 so he can break his brain from looking at a weapon like the Shreddifier, The Conference Call (the magic extra pellet that splits from the others), the Lob with its energy orbs, Full auto revolvers (like the Flood and Trickshot), and the absolute beast that is Vladof launchers (ION Cannon being the main example).
5:56 think I kind of like how the scope works. Seems like a good representation of aiming a scoped rifle with both eyes open.
