  • It turns out that Lloydy is a secret motorcycle enthusiast and has got himself a vintage (crap) moped. Well, Si is not a fan, and wants to put to bed any ideas that a moped is quicker than a road bike! They’ve gone down to the GCN time trial circuit for a race. It’s bike vs crap moped: which is faster?

    Presentation, humour, editing and music choice - everything top notch. That‘s the videos I love GCN for. Thanks Si for defending cyclists‘ pride. I guess we have a new series. Next: „Cyclist vs. slightly less crap moped“ and „cyclist vs. not even that crap moped“. Matching the nominal power of the moped in a sprint goes on the bucket list.

    When Dan started pedalling it was oddly reminiscent of Chris Froome when descending. I think he just needs some tribars to get more aero.
    Also shows just how good Dan and Si are as presenters and the chemistry between them. Not wishing to be critical of the other presenters but the years Si, Dan (and Matt) spent together honing their craft and building their relationships when GCN was a much smaller operation is noticeable when compared to those that joined later.

    Here in Germany we have scooters for 15 year olds that have a top speed of 25 Kmh. I always have great fun in overtaking them on my bike. One time I got behind one and followed it for about 2 Km, he kept looking over his shoulder to see if I was still there. Then he pulled over, walk around the scooter and checked it, I surpose thinking something was wrong and that he couldn't out run a bike. The funny thing is, is that here (Germany) bikes are surposed to be on bike paths ( if available ) but scooters are not allowed. I prefer to ride on the road because everyting is moving in the same direction, on bike paths that is quite often not the case and riding at 25 - 30 Kmh can be dangerous.

    • @chriswiecek6519

      I'm in the UK and prefer riding on the road too. Cycleways here have pedestrians wandering on them and not kept in good condition and covered in winter debris at this time. Dangerous and had had worse two accidents on these 'safe' ways!

    • @BewareSabotage
      @BewareSabotage 2 года назад +4

      Same in Northern Ireland, I purposely avoid cycle paths because the youths like smashing bottles in them and they’re always full of dogs and pedestrians dandering around like zombies. Less aggravating to just ride on the road. The only time I’ve been run over by a car was on a cycle path too, woman did a three-point turn and reversed on top of me, luckily got away with just a broken thumb.

    • @chrisridesbicycles

      So much fun overtaking them, especially in summer when they are sweating under their motorcycle helmets. But they get rare these days. Many 15 year olds prefer getting e-bikes. Annoying *sssssssr* everywhere.

    • @Jurinator
      @Jurinator 2 года назад +2

      Actually you don't have to ride on the bike path when there is one.. only if there is a blue sign saying so. Otherwise riding your bike on the street is fine and legal (obv. having to adhere to normal road rules and red lights)

    • @timodings
      @timodings 2 года назад +1

      Same with e-bikes... I love overtaking them. If there is actually enough space, since they are blocking a whole bike lane with there huge mirrors. 😄 Kudos to you for staying awake and conscious after 2km of breathing the scooter's emissions. 😄 I am also from Germany, so I know exactly, what you are talking about. I have to say though, the bike paths and lanes are becoming better and better every year, especially outside of cities or at calmer places in cities.

    When I lived in North Devon, 30 years ago, I lived in Ilfracombe and worked in Braunton. Next door to where I was employed, one of the workers, who also lived in Ifracombe, had a moped... I always rode to work on my Trek 970 and at least 3 days a week, I would set off home at the same time as the moped pilot! The route involves quite a long climb from Braunton up to Mullacott Cross, about 200m elevation. It starts off gradual, then ramps up a little towards the top. The moped always had the best of me on the flats, but as we gained height, I’d catch, then pass the pesky ‘ped, just as we got to the roundabout at the top. Down the hill into Ilfracombe, the race was always mine though! Bike wins, every time! I never managed to hook-up with them for the morning ascent, but as that is a lot steeper, I guess the result would have been the same 🤣

    I like the LPA (aka Light Pedal Assistance) as used in early days of the IoM TT races up Creg Willie's Hill long before the days of the full mountain course. My wife had a 1928 250cc Raleigh many years ago (NOT 1928 I hasten to add) on which she rode the full TT course. I'm pretty sure she was quicker on that than on her pedal cycle. A long-time motor cycling pal of mine has recently restored a French Velo Solex which is much nearer to being a pedal cycle and perhaps make a more realistic challenge for Simon.

    I once drove on a narrow road and heard a strange noise for minutes and couldn't figure out what it was until i turned my head around and saw a moped in my slipstream lol

      I had a similar thing, driving an air cooled VW van with window open and kept looking in the mirrors for the motorcycle I could hear until I stopped and realised it was me.

    The unfortunate thing about this video is that it's the closest we've seen Dan to a proper pushbike in years - not that he was on one, he was just in the vicinity of Si's.

    I had the exact same crap moped 9 years ago before it got stolen, even down to the same number plate. What are the odds of that lol

    Nice seeing Dan again. Not a petrolhead, but nice seeing a piece of classic personal transport, and Dan's passion for it. I'm one for older bikes amongst other things rather than new kit, sustainable before it was popular!
    Enjoy it while you can, the powers that be will limit the freedom of personal travel for the kids of today.

    I think part of the hilarity of the video is how uncomfortable Dan looks, with his lanky legs popping out over the top of the front shield 😁

    That was a great challenge. Maybe Dan could add a bit of Nitrous and give it another go 😆Well done guys.

    Did not recognize Lloydy until he spoke. Good disguise. BTW, was that Raleigh a member of the Raleigh/Moped Test team back in the day. You know what they say, "the older you get, the better you were"

    This would be awesome for GMBN: A moped vs mountainbiker on the trail lol that would be great.
