    I think it depends on the level design. If the level is more horizontal, the air dash will probably come in handy, but if the level is more vertical, the double jump will be more practical.

    Well… now that we have the Frontiers control scheme… we can actually have both!
    The double jump can still be mapped to the jump command, and boost is on the right trigger.
    However, the Homing attack is now BACK on the left face button, separate from the boost! Meaning that pressing the left face button in the air does… nothing! Now you can just map that to an air dash! Sonic can have a double jump, air dash, and an air boost all in one character!

    the air dash for adventure was also used to help Sonic immediately gain speed, which the boost games it does not function this way due to physics being a lot different.
    I remember playing SA2 and always used the air dash when nearly on the ground to get Sonic running, which I found to be very useful. I feel if momentum/physics come back to the series eventually I feel the air dash should be in the moveset for this reason, and also its a lot more faster and reliable then a double jump.

  • @ettiSurreal

    i have a feeling that Unleashed was originally meant to have the double jump (which is why the homing attack is on the boost button), but they eventually removed it but kishimoto's team kept it when developing colors.
    and honestly i prefer the double jump, because it's less useful as a double jump but more useful for giving yourself more air time, especially since unlike the jump dash it doesn't completely kill your momentum
    also the frontiers air boost is pretty much just the jump dash, its actually pretty comparable to unleashed's jump dash. (frontiers' base boost is pretty much just the lost world run button anyway lmao)

  • @ChargedTheHedgehog

    3:20 That is a weird statement, not cause it's wrong or right but because it's both. Sonic Frontiers has some of the most fun (and occasionally dynamic and multilayered) platforming in the entire series, it's one of the most platform-esque platformers ever, that gameplay loop takes center stage and it is engaging and fun AF for the majority of the playtime. But it's not integrated well with the environment, it's not dynamic, it is just out of place assets guiding you to events and parkour challenges. I appreciate the lore explanation given, that literally none of them are there and they're all constructs of the gang's mind but it doesn't make up for the visual turn off.

  • @mdstevens0612

    After playing Generations with a double jump mod, I am team double jump. Issue is just that Colors and Forces feel awful, you lose so much air control when you double jump. Frontiers is only slightly better but the air boost is so useful in Frontiers it feels like the best of both worlds.

  • @TheREALF3LL4

    Air Dash all the way!
    I don’t like how stiff and weird the double jump feels. Tho it works better in 2D rather than in 3D sections.
    I have my own issues with the air dash as well but I guess it really depends on what game. In Generations and 06 you lose momentum or speed when you air dash which is annoying. Never was like that in SA1 and SA2 or you just didn’t lose as much from my memory.

    Each has its own merits in their own games, the dash works to close the gap but doesn’t have much flexibility the double helps with Platforming and adjusting each works in their own game. Though a double jump often feels like a fix for a weak main jump.

    I mean, now that sonic frontiers has pioneered putting the boost on the right trigger, with the homing attack mapped to X/Y/square, I think it would be a great idea to put the air dash on X/Y/square when you don’t have a homing attack target, and map double jump to A.

    Double Jump is definitely the better option. especially for any game that utilizes a boost mechanic. Jump dash can look nice and all, buts its uses are a lot more limiting due to the range they cover and that it doesn't carry momentum. Double jumps not only give you a little extra height to help with platforming, not only keep you air borne a little longer to help with platforming, they also carry your momentum expanding the variety of situations you can get use from it. Plus you still can use your boost whenever making it much easier to keep a flow regardless of the layout. There have been plenty of times I was able to make jumps and cross gaps in Frontiers that I wouldn't be able to make if didn't have the double jump thanks to the extra time and height I can get with double jump without killing my momentum. Sure compared to a double jump, an airdash can change your angle easier in mid air, but you can still accomplish that with a midair boost. The airdash in comparison just seems like a redundant, limiting version of what you can already accomplish with a double jump and air boost.

    The double jump definitely comes with its strengths. But the jump dash will always feel more “Sonic” to me. It really helps sets him apart from other characters within the platforming genre. Not only that, it just feels better to use in the Adventure games especially.

    While I can’t remember the name of it this does reminds me of a mod for Frontiers that gives Sonic a bunch of new random abilities with one of them being the jump dash and the way it works is pretty simple
    If you press the homing attack button when there’s nothing around to homing on rather than using the useless punch ability in the air it will do the jump dash and if you ask me that’s the perfect way to incorporate it

  • @Kookie_13_
    @Kookie_13_ 15 дней назад

    I just thought of a new compromise. And airdash with an upwards arc but it also takes into account the direction and speed and acts as a multiplier for those 2 things but also have a speed limit as well so you can airdash for infinite speed. If you are going up the arc will be big and if you are going down fast enough then it will be straight

    kind of weird you mentioned accidentally inputting a homing attack for double jump and not air dash when both can face the same problem if their buttons are the same

  • @yukotrey9422
    @yukotrey9422 3 месяца назад

    It's a weird conundrum, homing attack input should always be in A-A ( sonic unleashed is funky), but that opens the door for if you double jump through a vertical area you homing attack into shit you don’t want to.
    I think you should either
    A) make level design around the single jump/ jump dash
    B) map the homing attack on a different button ( RT would probably be my bet)
    C) don’t put too many vertical sections in a game

  • @0Yours_Truly0

    How about when pressing the jump button twice sonic double jumps but when you press the homing attack button (if the game separates the jump and homing attack) while not locking onto anything you airdash?

  • @BatMane95
    @BatMane95 3 месяца назад

    With how Frontiers controls, they could have the Jump Dash on X out of Combat and keep the Double Jump on A in case you overshoot (I know this is easier said than done, but I feel like this would be good since it's like a best of both worlds kind of deal).

  • @Sydney_Angelyt

    As someone who casually speedruns generations, the double jump mod makes the one 2D section filled with blocks right before the last 3D section feel better as without it, it's the one section that breaks the flow, regardless of your skill.
    Any other time I could air dash, a well timed air boost allows me to go further.

    I liked Frontiers a lot, but it definitely lacks a Flow State. You just press forward to the next thing, and the subtle road markers from BotW only ever show up rarely. I like grabbing all the memory tokens, but to do so I have to use the map to find the token and then backtrack to find the start of the platforming section. That's not a flow state, and the "here's the objective straight ahead" doesn't help either.

  • @callmesnowboo
    @callmesnowboo 3 месяца назад

    Frontiers has both btw. Tapping Boost in the air makes him dash forward, no?
    You cannot really air boost because its so short that it ends up just being an air dash.
    Or just make the drop jump as high as a double jump would be for the verticality and use the second buttonpress on jump as the air dash?
    It will never be perfect. Just ideas. And all of them will be not liked by someone :c

  • @Codyiguess

    Tbh, the double jump has felt bad every time it’s been in sonic. It doesn’t carry momentum, and it barely gives additional height. I think it only exists to assist in platforming and i wouldn’t be sad to see it go. It needs a rework tbh.

  • @joshwillcox7141

    Honestly based on the sonic games that have a double jump, it seems to just be a crutch for poor controls at least in 2d. The controls in the Kishimoto directed games are not made for 2d. Yet they keep insisting on putting these sections in or in colours have most of the game in 2d. You don't even get much height out of it, it's like it only exists to correct jumps because they knew the 2d controls weren't great.
