Today, I am showing you guys how add some LIFE to a photo by turning it into a cinemagraph. If you have never made one, or always wanted to try it - this is how!
Cinemagraphs are a great way to explore a new territory in both photo and cinema and how we can tie those two worlds together. Turn a dull photo into something visually stimulating or use some creativity to come up with incredible ways to tell a story through this super awesome medium.

Quick question! What was the point of duplicating the clip and making the first frame the last frame if you were going to create a mask anyway? wouldn't the frame be looped seamlessly because that frame is still regardless? I hope that makes sense!

Maaria L I don't totally sure but if you made it without the duplication there will be movement of coffee stream out of the boundaries as he was moving his hand the glass, I hope you understand what I said
Ahh, I get it! It wouldn't be a seamless loop because the coffee stream would jerk back to the first frame when looping, because the first and end frame are different. Makes sense. Thanks Mohammed!
I don't think there would have been any movement because the duplicated was a still layer that he used the mask tool to make a hole revealing the movement of the coffee.
I have exactly the same question. I think he basically just shorten the loop. :)

I've been using Photoshop since like Photoshop Elements 5 and had not the slightest clue that you could do any sort of video work in it. It never even occurred for me to wonder if that was in the realm of possibilities. Mind blown...
Awesome video, just a fix/note: D is to reset to default foreground/background, while X SWAPS those values, not directly D for white and X for black. Great video anyways!

Pro tip. Do it in after effects instead of photoshop. Export it as a .mov file and then convert to .gif instead if you want a .gif. Gif's have a really narrow colorspace, leaving you with pixelated results to only 256 000 colors versus several million in video.
So. Same steps just in After Effects? And im assuming you can convert to .gif in after effects?

One of the coolest things yet....
You could do everything on After Effects, Pete. Even the Color Grading. Saves time because you don't need to switch from Premiere to Photoshop, less image compression and better animation tools. But I know you know that, just saying to the public. :)

Danny Trombley I don't remember if Premiere has masking tools, but if it does you could do there too, but even Photoshop has better timeline keyframes control. I use Premiere only for video cuts and some simple audio mix. After Effects is the Photoshop of video editing. It is fast, powerful and has everything you need. AE will give you better and faster results in this case.
I can't find out how to export gif using only AE. So as far as iI know you will still have to go through photoshop. Please let me know how you do it.
You can add the composition directly to Adobe Media Encoder and then export as an animated GIF. It is a simple process. Just select the comp you need to export on AE, then click on "export" and "add to Media Encoder Queue", when it is opened, change the export module to "animated GIF" and you are done.

SUPER helpful tutorial. I've tried creating a cinemagraph or two in the past but found the process too tedious. But now I feel better about it when I consider how to film for it to begin with to make for smoother cinemagraphs later.

It does not let me export. It gives me an Adobe Save for Web Error that says the operation could not be completed. Help.
try different settings when you export, like reduce the color space or frame rate, also sub to my channel, i have a lot of tutorials

Get a photo of a road, feet, and then you can get a moving sky gif/ video from videezy or shutterstock but videezy is free. and mix them together. Whoever blended the feet together needs to blend it better, it is badly masked out with white on the edges.

Hey Peter how come my gif exports all grainy? The cinemagraph looks horrible. How can I make the export crisp?
Check the ISO on your camera, and check if it wasn't grainy before you edited it.
It's my understanding that Gifs are limited when it comes to colour reproduction, which is why some may appear grainy, because the compression can't figure out what colour to show some pixels at.

Have you checked how many colors you're using? Also select "no dither"

yeah just make sure he doesnt move in front of anyone and no one gets too close to him
Take a screenshot of one frame with no one in it, a video with people in it moving, and a video with the subject moving in front of where everyone else is (but without anyone there). Then use a tool which can isolate the subject based on the difference between the moving layer and the still layer and put that video on top of the regular video with people in it. (Not sure what the tools are, but I'm sure they exist)
