  • This week I'm working on the DIY kayak trailer. I found a few issues with the kayak trailer that I need to fix before we use it! Also, I finally got my hands on a new ARE camper shell for the Toyota Tacoma and I want to build out the truck bed into a stealth camper. So be sure to hit me up with suggestions for the truck camper build series! I want to add a bed, AC, Heat, Power and more so I can camp right from the truck bed! Be sure you are subscribed! Thanks for watching!!

Check into concrete form plywood. Plastic coated on both sides. Water and weather resistant marine plywood 4x8 sheets. Can be found at construction suppliers for poured concrete foundation people. Caution note edges are as sharp as glass were cut or drilled. Just lightly sand edges. I also use it for woodworking jigs.

I agree with Chuckie you should get a SUV tent and hook it to the back of your truck. Dont you have a camera on the back of your truck TJ. Or add one to your new topper. All you need is power for it which you can get from your tail lights and BAM you have rear vision!

I second the following ideas mentioned in earlier post.
    1. Bed Rug - one piece unit that lines the bed and tailgate.
    2. SUV tent - gives you space to change, and hang out if inclement weather hits.
    3. Backup camera easy add to any vehicle.
I would also recommend the Exped self-inflating mat that many use in rooftop tents, they come in a single or full/double size and are very comfortable. Plus it allows you to not have any bulky platforms you have to remove if you need use the truck bed for hauling something.
Anyway looking forward to the build!

Check into concrete form board plywood. Plastic coated on both side on marine plywood. Completely water resistant. Former job we used it on flatbed truck and lasted for years. No paint or varnish needed. I also use it for woodworking jigs. Caution on cut edges as plastic is sharp as glass. Just lightly sand edges and good to go. Plywood can be found at construction supply companies that sell to poured concrete foundation companies. Bikes in the back just hose off mud.

Had a buddy with no mesh on his trailer and a rock or something kicked up and put a nice dent on the bottom of his yak. We put some mesh down for protection from road debris

With the new rack coming, how about a 270 degree awning? I use the OVS 270 Nomad awning and it is great. You can add walls to enclose the whole thing if needed, or just a portion to change and do other things in.

Hey TJ, a rear view camera is really good for you backing your trailers at the boat ramps. Love the channel. Thanks. Dave.

My truck actually has a back up camper but it’s at the tailgate level. I need to at one to the top rack probably. 🤙🏼

Looking forward to the truck bed build, been thinking about a topper on my 5.5 bed on my f150 so it’s a bit of a challenge to sleep back there !

I have the same issue with my trailer. I back up to the grass to the side and lift the nose on the trailer then go pick up the rear and slide it all forward... Looks goofy at the ramp but I'm not about to break my neck tight roping on a wet trailer.... I was thinking about getting composite decking and putting it on the top of the trailer and ditching the PVC altogether, since Hobie doesn't recommend PVC at all now.....

Love your videos! Have you considered putting carpet on the metal tube bunks. I would love to do that to mine, but have no idea what type of carpet and glue to use. OTWI just started putting carpet on their bunks…. It looks nice.
If you ever decide to do this, please let me know so I can learn how to do it.
Thanks for your time on the videos!

One thing I thought of that might give you a little more sleeping room is maybe rig some kind of tarp or tent material so that you can attach around the open tailgate. The hatch for the topper could be made to only swing open until it's parallel with the open tailgate. You could maybe use Velcro to secure the material to the inside edge of the tailgate. work the material around the supports so that they are on the outside, then stretch the material around behind the tail lights somewhere. Also if you are looking to go more light weight instead of using wood and carpet for the floor you could just get an inflatable mattress that fits. It won't flair out in the back but you could use those areas for storage. Anyway, great video. I can't wait to see how you decide to finish this thing.

I've noticed you don't have registration id's on kayak, wondering how you registered your used kayak in Alabama because it's almost impossible to get it without the original receipt from original buyer? To get it in your name,.you can't just take a bill of sale to get registered..my buddy just tried to do it and found out you have to have a judge sign it off as abandoned kayak costs 280$ and it's not guaranteed to register it..so how'd you do it..
