I know this is is an older video but thank you for it you actually answered all the questions I had about the trolling motor. I'm brand new to the kayak concept I'm purchasing my first one in either Sept or Nov So pre building it out on paper and purchasing the easy (and cheaper) stuff while I wait.
I like the idea of having a bow mount trolling motor, but what happens when you hit a stump or other structure. No give and that would suck. You make great videos by the way.
thanks for a great video, I just got this for my Kayak, can you please provide the details of the bracket you use to pull the XI3 up with or if you have come up with a even better solution now , as this is 2 years old, can you provide that info.... thank you! Charlie
Got the xi3 kayak version from bass pro on sale. $150 off. Now to scrape up cash for the 12v 100ah Dakota. The xi3 was a lot lighter than I thought it would be.
Shaft clamp is available at Yakgadgets. I just bought one and installed on a Motorguide xi3, but had to enlarge the shaft hole a little with a spindle sander. It’s some kind of composite so no biggie.
Having trouble putting 10g wire into the Marinco plug. PKG reads 8 to ten gauge. Trolling motor wire ten gauge went into male end of plug without a hitch.
Thanks TJ this is the video I have been waiting for. I said something to you at least 6 months ago. I have seen plenty of videos on how to install the motor guide, but I knew you would do a clean install. You delivered.
OK I’ve seen about six or seven people ask about that V-shaped bracket you have on the shaft of the trolling motor but you haven’t answered yet you’ve answered other things. Why is that? I just purchased one Xi3 and I’d like to know about that V bracket. Thank you

Where do you get the nylon rivet used to pull the foot petal with the 1/8 cord running through it .Thank you, trying to get something to work.I appreciate your help!
I read through the differences on motorguides website between the two models but they pretty much read the same. What are the main differences between the two motors. Probably a very basic question but this all new to me. Thank you
Now that you’ve had it for awhile how do you like it? Did it hold up in ruff conditions? Do you like it better than your min kota or other brands you’ve tried?
I have the exact same setup. Also ordered a Guardian Angel red and green LED light. What do you think about putting the magnetic mount on the top of the trolling motor to mount that Guardian Angel light. I can’t think of anywhere else to mount that light with our current trolling motor setups.
Great video TJ... I am definitely jealous, I would love to get one of those 12 V 100 amp hour batteries... maybe one day but the kayak is turning out awesome. Thanks again
Watching all your videos, and the one thing that has caught my eye is the Altec Speaker on the Ram mount, how is it that you actually have mounted that. Looking to do the same, just looking for a mounting solution that is tried and true.
Before I order the boonedox is there any issues with the kayak being too heavy for it with the trolling motor, batteries and everything else fully loaded down. I’ll have a similar setup and am a little worried with the 180lb boonedox max weight capacity. Thank you
Hi TJ. The deploy is not automatic for that motor? My understanding was, the deploying it can be controlled from the remote control. Thank you for your answear.

@@KayakUSA1 Thanks TJ! I stumbled across your review of the Bixpy and it looks exactly like what in after. Pretty slick! Also, would you get a second battery to place under the seat for other electronics like a finder and phone charging, etc? Or is the Bixpy powerful enough for everything?
Hey I noticed your gps light on the xi3 didn’t turn on right away. I’ve had the same issue. Did you get this resolved and if so how did you? Did it end up just turning on my itself?
You’ve got a sweet setup. I got a fishing kayak and need to streamline things a bit with my trolling motor setup (on the stern). Are there any type of quick connects for batteries if I don’t want to drill holes in the kayak so I can disconnect my battery quickly from the trolling motor? I still have a smaller Duracell 35amp agm battery I use for it but hate having to unscrew the terminals every time to bring the battery in to charge it.
TJ thanks for putting out this video. I’m in the process of getting this install on my Hobie I did have one question where can I get the holder that you made for the controller for the xi13 remote? Do you sell those it looks like you custom made it. Thanks Randy

Any reason why the XI3 would not work if mounted on the rear of the kayak? Just for getting from point A to B for example without the spot lock Gps on it.
Hey brother quick question - the motor is stamped as needing 6ga wire but I see you didn’t opt for that and you mentioned it’s because it’s the 12v model. So is mine. How has it performed with the lighter wire? I love that power connector you used but they don’t have a 6ga version.
Does the Garmin work hand in hand with the Motorguide? I just installed Lowrance hds active target system along with the NMEA coms so I can pick a waypoint on my maps and the trolling motor will take me to that spot. it wouldn't do that with my Humminbird i'm also running. I wish Motorguide had a screen on the remote like MK do. I've almost dumped myself because I didn't know what was turned on or the speed. Only complaint.
Where did you get the steering bracket that you are using to lift and deploy the trolling motor? The one that's a V shape that you have clamped onto the shaft under the head unit. I'm adding a trolling motor to the bank of my kayak and I've searched everywhere for a proper steering bracket but haven't found anything. My next option is to draw one up and 3D print it.

I have been thinking about adding one to my PA14. My concern is we have so many trees and large brush in my area, I feel like I would just hit it and get thrown out of the yak, probably tear the thing up as well. Thoughts?
I don't intend to say 10AWG is insufficient for your build... it's probably fine. But it sounds like you're thinking higher voltages need thicker wires. Typically, the reverse is true. A motor drawing similar power at higher voltage will do so at fewer amps. The amps determine whether your wires will overheat, so higher voltage = lower amperage = thinner wires.
Your going to find out like me, it's great to have the motor guide but having to use the remote to turn on an off and steer isn't as handy as on bass boat. It's easier to have spot lock on a spot. But to fish and use trolling motor to say go down a bank while fishing is frustrating..
Question, everything I read says that Alabama law states if you put a gas or electric motor on your kayak it’s now a powered vessel and requires registration and the boaters safety class on your license (which I already have). If this is not true, can you provide a reference?
