1980’s 4 cylinder DIESEL Mini Truck Abandoned - Will it Run?

  • I didn’t even know this truck existed. A 1984 Mazda b2200 powered by a 2.2L Perkins Diesel. This truck began its life in California and later came to Missouri where it was used on the farm until 1998. Now 26 years later, the truck hasn’t been ran or drove - abandoned and left to rot away. Today we will attempt to get this RARE diesel running once again.

    Thats actually a Mazda engine built under license from Perkins. Way more reliable. I bought one new and put almost 600,000 miles on it. The 84 Ive had the last 22 years still runs great but the impossibility of finding parts is almost making me want to sell it finally. When theyre in good shape they run well and are super reliable. The main problem swapping the engine is the gas firewall opening is smaller and the top two trans bolts on the diesel will hit the top of the firewall opening. Youre better off using the gas truck for the donor. The gas engines blow head gaskets. Ive never heard of the diesels cracking heads unless you overheat them. Ive never cracked or warped a head in all the years Ive driven them.

      What is known as the S2 or 4.135 was based on Perkins's then-current 4.154, but then Mazda itself made it its own by shortening the 4.154's piston stroke length from 101.6 mm to 89 mm, while retaining the 88.9 mm cylinder bore. Eventually, Mazda would get the 4.154 for itself, renamed the XA, as well as make a larger 3.0L version called the 4.182 or HA, which was created by increasing the 4.154's cylinder bore from 88.9 mm to 95 mm and the piston stroke from 101.6 mm to 105 mm.

    I swapped a 2.2 Perkins from a 83 into a 92 B2200 for my dad about 4-5 years ago now and it’s going strong ever since. We put a turbo on it from a 1.8t Golf mk4 and we have the pump upgraded to a turbo pump with a boost reference…makes about 20psi. It’s not fast by any means but the turbo give it some much needed torque and we have towed 3500lbs with the truck and it was doable. The engine is a little unit.

One of my boys drives his static-dropped 83 dailly to college and work. It runs like a Singer sewing machine. I have another one which has been stored in the shop waiting for me to finish a V8 conversion. First truck was the gas cousin of that one, same year. That 5-speed transmission is 100% bullet proof. Driven a lot of manual trucks and that is still my favorite transmission. For most of the 80's the Ford Ranger used the same transmission. The other great thing is that as long as the frame is solid you can literally drive it for 700,000 miles with no body left.

      @@RealSteelFabrications I think the engine will outlive everything else. I sold mine with 250,000 miles and it ran great with no oil consumption or smoking. The only major issue I had was a weak input shaft bearing in the transmission. There was a TSB about it from the ones made up to the end of 1983. Mine had this issue and I changed all the bearings in the transmission. Mine was made in November 1983 so it was just before they fixed the problem.

My old man had a 86 B2000, it had the little 4 cylinder Hemi head gas engine in it, I don’t remember what liter it was but back in 06-07? we had to go to the junkyard and find another Mazda truck with the same engine and get the head off of it to put on the old man’s truck, he blowed the head gasket on his driving to my little brothers down in Etown Ky, instead of pulling over and shutting it off he figured he could make it to my brothers house, but ended up messing the head up, anyways yeah had to put another head on his, you talk about a job, man that was a pain changing the head. Im in the states too. Ive got both a 84 b2000 and a 82 b2200. The b2200 body is pretty rotted but ive swapped many panels already. Its honestly the most reliable vehicle i own. Cant go up a hill at 60 mph for shit though. One thing to note is if your alternator desont work, youre shit out of luck. I replaced mine with a bigger alternator off a meduim duty truck that also as the vacuum pump on the back. I think it was an Isuzu NPR. Ive swapped a Ford 302 and T-5 into my B2000. Also that isnt a trans cooler, its the engine oil cooler. And the transmissions are the same, the bell housings are not, but they can be swapped out. FB RX7s have the same trans too

      @NOBLE-wo5rr 6 месяцев назад

      @@RealSteelFabrications The original alternator didnt work. I tried replacing the voltage regulator and the diode pack which didnt do anything. The Isuzu alternator i swapped in works great. Its got the same mounting and overall shape, just physically bigger so I had to use some spacers and a longer bolt on the bottom and rigged up a top bracket that I took off the b2000. You also have to wire in the new plug but its got the same wires so its super easy. Yours probably just has a bearing going out, or maybe there is some crap isnide the housing that needs cleaned out. The RX7 uses a much different bell housing so you would need to swap it, but the transmission itself will work. Ive got units from all three (B2000, B2200, and RX7) and they are physically identical. Im sure the gearing is different though. I plan on putting my rx7 trans into my b2200 in the future.

    Hey, I dont know if this will apply to US trucks but theres a good chance it does. With the B1600 and B2200, the firewalls are different as the B2200 bellhousing is quite a bit larger, my Grandad did that swap on his back in the 90s and he ended up chopping out a big chunk of the firewall so the gearbox would fit. It went from being a flat shap above the gearbox to being a big rounded flare, although the B2200 firewall in reality just has the flat part up higher and has a bit of a notch for the starter to sit in. The transmissions crossmember and engine mounts are different too so theres a bit of work with a welder needed there to make that happen but its doable. He used the petrol crossmember and welded the mounts in the chassis, it sits slightly more forward than on a standard diesel but works fine.

    It's pretty weird for me to see those chubby oil cans.
    We work with 5L ones all day every day.

    That startup was impressive and shockingly easy.
    I would love to see one of these with a mitsubishi engine. (I work on Mitsubishis and have an affinity for them).

      @RealSteelFabrications I can imagine, same case in my country but all those trucks are getting hard to find (even petrol ones), or the ones you find are just beat up or worn out.
      Though "mini trucks" never went away for us. But the old school look is something I like.
